of us have been dreading, those triple digit temperatures back in the bay area. this time it will be even hotter. our coverage begins this morning with the woman who is tracking all those dangerous temperatures for us all week, meteorologist kari hall. when can we expect the triple digits to arrive? we're going to start to see that by this afternoon. we had some of those highs over 100 degrees yesterday afternoon. and today it's going to be even hotter. take a look at this map. it does show some bright colors here. bright pink shows where we do have the excessive heat warnings and some of the hottest temperatures we'll see. around the bay, san rafael reaching 88 degrees, pleasanton 104. morgan hill today will reach 102 degrees. we need to conserve energy, try to spare the air as we have have unhealthy air quality as well as more of this hot and dangerous weather.

we'll talk about that and the fire danger. mike? the bay bridge toll plaza, not because i expected to find a problem at the toll plaza, but it is on the approach off 880 over in the area reports of an area overturned car about 1:00 in the morning. look at the map. we don't see any slow but activity reported on the chp grid. i think everything is cleared. just double-checking as we start with our first report of this show. a smooth drive and no delays, fremont, some activity. we'll talk about that coming up. back to you. today's dangerous heat is prompting a statewide flex alert. the goal to reduce stress on the grid and avoid power outages. here are some ways you can help set your thermostat to 78 degreeoid using major

cool things down. a flex alert could be issued again tomorrow. and one of the hottest spots on the map today is concord. >> "today in the bay's" sergio quintana has more on what's among the biggest concerns for firefighters. >> reporter: in concord the night is still pretty balmy. a perfect spot for an evening stroll but the next two days are expected to be even hotter. even the slightest accidental spark from traffic or yard work can be dangerous and fireworks are among the biggest concern for firefighters. >> fireworks are exceptionally off the scale, dangerous in the conditions we're in right now. aside from the fact they're illegal. >> reporter: an ordinance that passed this month increases fines and other penalties for people caught lighting them. the heat is also a concern for firefighters because of heat exhaustion. >> it's a dangerous proposition

for firefighters. our firefighters are out there in heavy gear. we call them turnouts. >> reporter: in an effort to respond fast contra costa fire has increased staffing including wild land fire resources. on this first day of the searing streak of heat downtown concord was a hot 104 degrees. it's especially uncomfortable if your job is to stand around in a black uniform. >> for the most part i just drink water, go inside every now and then. i don't want to pass out. >> reporter: several spots like senior citizen centers and libraries are designated cooling areas. if you plan on dropping in, it may be a good idea to check on the hours and if there are masking or social distancing requirements. or you can take a dip. >> it was so nice. such a nice day. that cold water was amazing. >> reporter: now that restrictions are lifted at area pools and water parks, they are expecting a busy couple of days.

mask rules again. >> what could it mean for you? more on the workers who are hoping they'll be able to ditch the face coverings. >> reporter: even though the fully vaccinated don't have to wear masks, employees do. the owner can't wait to lose hers. it's been very hard because we have, as you can see, the brick oven and it's very hot in here. >> reporter: the entire staff is vaccinated. the occupational safety and health or cal osha is expected to vote workers like them don't have to wear masks anymore. customers say it's time. >> as long as they're fully vaccinated, i feel they have the same opportunity that we do as patrons in a restaurant to not wear the mask any longer. >> reporter: the waiter says he'll probably still wear one. >> it's really hard to still use

mid-60s. this gives us an idea how quickly a fire could spread if we are seeing any sparks in this dry vegetation. take a look at the relative humidity numbers in the east bay, the tri-valley. down in the single digits. that is critically dry air and the reason we are seeing a high index for today. that as temperatures could reach some new records in spots like vacaville and livermore. we'll be very close in napa. mike, what are you watching for the morning commute? overnight we have warming when it's colder, maybe cooking fires. a smooth drive on the freeways but the malary off ramp just off of the freeway sounds like everything could be out of

for inflation and talk about the possibility of maybe two interest rate hikes some time in 2023. yes, that's two years away. that's sooner than some folks were expecting. the fed chair jay powell saying those projections should be taken with a big grain of salt and still thinks inflation we're seeing now will work its way through, that it's temporary. the dow closing down 265 points. the nasdaq edging lower. still near record highs. we're waiting for the latest report on the number of new people filing for unemployment. a group of bipartisan lawmakers introduced a bill to make it easier for people to cancel online subscriptions after the free trial ends. the unsubscribe act would require companies to be more transparent about those subscriptions. it addresses what's known as negative option billing where you sign up for a free trial and then you're automatically switched to a full-price subscription and you

this is the time if you need to stay inside with air conditioning. yes, absolutely, or find some of those cooling centers as we posted on our website, nbcbayarea.com. let's check out your forecast heading to work in the east bay, pleasant hill. our morning is a prime opportunity to get out there and enjoy a little bit of fresh air, maybe even open up the windows, let the house cool down. our temperatures start out in the upper 50s and 60s. and then we'll be quickly heating up by 11:00 here we're at 90 degrees. we know it's going to be a hot day. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. let's talk about ways to beat the heat. once again we want to remind to you make sure you drink lots of water even if you don't feel thirsty. set the thermostat to 78 degrees. we have the flex alert. that means don't use the major appliances during the afternoon to evening hours. use the cooling centers once again. never leave anyone or any pets in the car and check on the kids

and elderly. kids like to go outside and play. make sure they don't get overheated and check on your friends and neighbors who don't have air conditioning and care for people making sure you provide them with shelter or at least a cold drink of water. up to 103 in gilroy. for the east bay we're looking at highs up to 108 degrees. antioch, concord, some of the hottest spots, danville reaching 105. haywood a high of 90 degrees there and at least we do still keep the cool weather near the coast. if you're in a spot like half moon bay it's going to reach into the low 70s. we'll see some 70s in san francisco but parts of the city will be heating up into the 80s today. and watch out for some of the warmer areas. in the north bay we're up to 105 in clear lake while mill valley will see a high of 90 degrees. here is napa's forecast over the next seven days. we have this intense heat now and still pretty hot tomorrow.

the week we start to come down into the upper 80s. look at next week. this is what i'm focused on, those upper 70s. it will be nice. we just have to wait a few more days of this really hot weather. we're going to also see that cooldown for a lot of our inland valleys going from the triple digits to the 70s next week. big changes ahead. mike, are you seeing any big changes now for the morning commute? not right now. that's good. not in the short term, but we will have big changes soon. we do have a crash, also, that just popped up here in san jose, 237. we'll check that around north first. no slowing shows up, though. to the bay bridge a smooth drive and keep your eyes on that richmond/san rafael bridge while we look at the travel times. easy drive, highway 4. the same thing for vasco, byron to 580. that live look over at the richmond side at the toll plaza. we have a smooth drive toward the toll plaza getting away eastbound reports of a truck with a lot of stones, rock

debris in the back, around the toll plaza. we'll see slowing but don't see a problem. california's drought is having a ripple experts believe summer it may force the state to pay more for power that's costlier to produce. bloomberg says california's hydroelectric supplies are down 40% this year due to lower water flows. even though it's relatively easy to create. in hotter weather when more power is needed more fossil fuels may have to be burned to bridge the gap and may increase power shortages. happening today the san jose mother accused of killing her 7-year-old son has her first court hearing. samantha moreno rodriguez faces a murder charge and is scheduled to appear virtually from denver and is pending extradition to las vegas. police say she killed her 7-year-old son and left his body on a hiking trail in a southern nevada desert. no cause of death has been released. she was arrested last week after checking into a denver hotel

room. authorities in eastern contra costa county have not identified two young drivers killed in a head-on crash. it happened on sellers avenue in knightsen. the chp says the driver of each car, a 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, died. the other person, a 15-year-old passenger in one of the cars is in critical conditio. they believe a car swerved across the double yellow line. it's not known if the driver was impaired. a live look this morning over in san francisco. the city of oakland, the city council will discuss proposed changes. she says her version refocuses city resources to enable police to prioritize the most effective strategy. this is to solve violent and serious crime. the goal here to modernize policing in oakland. mayor libby schaaf's proposed budget calls for more police academies. more cadets can get trained and

sworn in. that special budget meeting of the council gets under way at 10:30 this morning. councilmembers have until june 30th to pass the two-year spending plan. oakland budget concerns left some school crossing guard positions vulnerable. the vice mayor kaplan says she's identified a funding source to save them which the council will have to approve. about 30 part-time positions are in jeopardy. she plans to lay out her plan in that special meeting today. happening today a popular tourist spot in san francisco reopens to visitors for the first time in 15 months. we're talking about hoyt tower. tickets will be sold for elevator rides to its observation deck, but masks will be required in the elevator. guided tours of artwork will be limited to six people at a time. before the pandemic up to 1,500 people visited coit tower every day. and coming up not getting onboard. california's high-speed rail got a billion dollars from the federal government but there's a snag that might stop the project

state grants. new details on california's troubled high-speed rail project. apparently not everyone is onboard yet when it comes to the next round of state funding. according to "the chronicle" a new place holder budget lawmake4 billion in bond money to complete the central valley leg. now it's not clear how it will be included in the final budget but supporters fear taking money from the project now would create new delays and lead to more job cuts. opponents argue that money would be better spent on rail projects and higher density areas. some women love a girl's night out, but imagine having one at the vice president's house. kamala harris organized a dinner this week for her female colleagues in the senate. some republican senators were also at the event. many shared photos on twitter including a close-up of the menu and featured cheese puffs made by the vice president herself. it was the first time vice president harris hosted at her washington, d.c., home since moving in april. we continue to track that
