"today in the bay" begins right now. good morning. thank you so much for joining us. i'm cierra johnson in for laura garcia. >> and it is friday and i'm marcus washington. but we want to get straight to what you'll deal with once you head outside today. we issued a microclimate weather alert. meteorologist hal has been following that for us this morning. another day of the heat, kari. >> yes, we are going to have this last day of these triple digit temperatures in the bay area and we do still have the heat advisories that will continue until 9:00 this evening, and then the excessive heat warnings in the area shaded in pink where we are looking at temperatures over 100 degrees for today. let's get a look at all of our microclimates and where we're headed. still hot this afternoon, 95 in martinez, 95 in san jose. santa rosa will reach 97 degrees and 105 today in clearlake, morgan hill reaching 101

degrees. we talk about that as well as our forecast in a few minutes. mike, what's going on? >> the excessive heat east of livermore exits westbound 580 was closed for a short period of time, there was a car fire, it was an suv that spread to a grass fire. they shut down 580 and reopened it. it happened within a span of about 40 minutes westbound has reopened and no fire in the area. we still have closer for 84 through alvarado niles. power alerts across the bay area. >> "today in the bay's" sergio quintana has more from los gatos. >> reporter: with temperatures across the bay area and the rest of the state reaching beyond the 100-degree mark governor gavin newsom issued a state of new jersey calling for california resources to be mobilized and

all power generators the in the state to be ready to kick in. the flex alert asking residents to conserve energy setting air conditioners to 78 degrees, turning off unnecessary lights, avoiding using major appliances and don't charge your electric car until the flex alert is over. well into the night, cal iso tweeted residents are successfully reducing power use and is not predicting rotating power outages. earlier in the afternoon pg&e put 121,000 customers on notice they could be affected by rolling outages. >> doesn't surprise me, not after the last few years with the fires and everything. >> i remember when we had the power outages last, so makes sense and it was hot, super hot today. >> reporter: not just rolling outages, public safety power shutoffs are a concern. last summer were issued because of heat and wind and concerns they to bring down power lines sparking fires.

"today in the bay's" cheryl hurd has reaction from east bay congresswoman barbara lee who was in the room where it happened and at that ceremony. >> reporter: rolling out the red carpet in san francisco, a celebration for african-american small business owners. the celebration made even more special after president joe biden signed a bill into law making juneteenth a federal holiday. >> something that we have always thought was our national image

hayward toward fremont. two lanes are blocked by a crash at alvarado niles. no word on injuries but there's an overturned vehicle there causing the slower drive. everything else is moving smoothly. there is the closure for construction and eastbound 580 getting away from the castro valley y there is a crash there as well. most of the issues are out of the roadway. north 680 at contra costa boulevard shy of 242 i should say a crash may be blocking one lane, headed up through concord. back to you. coming up on "today in the bay," getting back on track. vta is working to recover from last month's mass shooting at the light rail yard. the effort being made today as the transit agency looks to resume service. plus one more requirement for those receiving unemployment checks from the state, the additional step you'll have to take following the state's big reopening.

on scene from the overturned vehicle shy of the dumbarton bridge as you head southbound on 880, we'll bring you the latest update. the developments coming up. good morning. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. taking a look at the futures right now, wall street is set for a mixed opening this morning after a mixed session yesterday for stocks. dow falling for the fourth straight day down more than 200 points. investors continue to try to figure out what it means with the federal reserve updating its policy this week. the nasdaq was up, the s&p was pretty much flat on the day. the fed signaled that it's likely to make at least two interest rate hikes possibly as early as 2023, that's two years away but more hawkish than they've been in a long time. the dow on pace for its worst week since january. carnival says a data breach in march may have exposed customers and employees' personal

information on carnival, holland america and princess cruises. outsiders may have gained access to social security and passport numbers, birth dates, addresses and health information. that's a lot of info. carnival isn't saying how many have been affected but they have notified folks and hired a cyber security firm to work to investigate. carnival was hit twice last year by ransomware attacks. honda is ending production of its hydrogen fuel cell and hybrid clarity model this summer. auto blog reports the decision is due to weak demand and honda's new focus on electric vehicles. clarity's high price tag of 71k and lack of hydrogen refueling stations. honda will continue to provide support for the foreseeable future. honda previously announced it would debut an electric car for 2024 and plans to sell only zero

it is friday morning and we take a live look out in oakland, oh, yes the lights they're shining all the way toward the weekend so we don't miss it. don't want to take the wrong turn. >> turning off the lights, so hot >> thanks for joining us here on "today in the bay." we have to get you caught up on the weather. it's been a hot one the last couple of days and i don't think today is going to be different. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that. the trend is going down at least the last few days. >> what makes it better, the fact it's friday, even though it's still going to be hot it's going to be so much better. here is a look at our clear view this morning starting out in san jose the mid-60s as you step out the door and going to see a quick warmup once again.

where we can find relief is the coastline. reaching into the upper 60s that is going to feel refreshing. all of us can't be there so we have to deal with some of these temperatures as we are going to see the potential for some records to be set very close. napa reaching 98. we're not close to the record there. 110 degrees and thank goodness. vacaville headed up to 103 today, four degrees shy of a roar. a lot of the records were set in 2017 so you may remember that. in fairfield we're just one degree below a record and it's possible that we could tie that one at least. south bay high temperatures, milpitas reaching 93 and morgan hill a high of 101 degrees. we'll see triple digit temperatures for the inland east bay, oakland 81. daly city reaching 68 degrees but compare that to 90 in palo alto. san francisco will reach into the 70s today and our north bay

temperatures will reach up to 106 in ukiah and sonoma reaching 100 degrees. so as we go through this forecast, we know that it's going to get better each day but let me show you napa's forecast, even though it's today, we're in the upper 80s the rest of the weekend and we catch a break early next week, take a look at those high temperatures on tuesday, that's even hard to imagine, 73 degrees for a high on tuesday. we'll have a nice cooldown with upper 70s in the forecast and yes, this weekend is father's day, so make sure you take care of dad, at least give a phone call. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? >> sometimes my kids text me from the other room in our house. trouble in the east bay. this is heading south on 880, the traffic alert and breaking news is that it's just the far right lane, slow lane the only lane open through union city and headed to the border with fremont. the backup starts at alvarado

niles, just shy of alvarado boulevard. you can get around using dire but it only adds five to seven minutes. stick it out, leave a little bit early. the rest of the bay is clear but we are tracking that, only one lane open southbound 880 at alvarado niles. convicted killer scott peterson is set to appear virtually in a san mateo courtroom later today. the judge is expected to hear a motion to appoint legal counsel for scott peterson. last month prosecutors will not seek the death penalty and sentencing retrial, not wanting to bring up new pain for laci peterson's family members. he's serving out the sentence for the murder of his wife and unborn son. also happening today the suspect accused in the attack of an elderly asian woman in san francisco is expected in court to face attempted murder charges. >> we have new video of the brutal stabbing but we must warn you, it is hard to watch.

the video showing 94-year-old ann taylor goes by the name ping on post street wednesday morning, police say daniel approached her stabbing her three times. taylor's niece is heartbroken by all of this. >> she didn't deserve it and you know, i mean she's just walking outside of her home. >> nbc bay area has learned that police arrested cowic five times in 2020 for burglaries and once in 2016 for homicide. district attorney boudin said his office told a judge he should not be released. in the wake of the deadly rampage at the vta railyard, agency leaders will hold an emergency meeting that will center around a request for an emergency declaration and state funding to help get south bay lightrail service back on track. there's no time line for trains to resume and the rail yard's

future is unclear. nine workers were shot and killed by a co-worker a little more than three weeks ago. new details california's edd will soon bring back the work search requirement for california's getting unemployment benefits. starting next month, people should begin looking for work to maintain their eligibility. during the start of the pandemic, the edd waived that requirement. next month when people fill out their weekly certification for benefits they need to answer "yes" to continue to, they are looking for work in that category to keep the benefits. and coming up, some people in wine country raising a red flag over vacationers in their neighborhoods. they're now going to court. the way a time share company is fighting back. but first, happening now, more cuts could be on the way for sutter health. the people who live near the properties are not on board. neighbors in one wine county location are cueing calling it a glorified time share disrupting the neighborhood fabric. pacaso says this is a limited joint ownership the timeshare label is inaccurate and filing its own lawsuit accusing the town of st. helena of waging a campaign against its clients. the giants just had a history-making win, but in this case, fortunately the history had nothing to do with them. they were playing arizona at oracle yesterday and the diamondbacks had no answers for kurt casale. casale draw in four home runs with a homer and a triple. the giants won 10-3 and the d'backs lost a record setting 23rd straight road game, the most in major league history. ouch. when the giants take on the phillies at oracle starting tonight, and through sunday, the only way to watch them will be on peacock.
