on the power grid. first meteorologist kari hall is tracking when it will be the hottest where you live. good morning, kari. >> good morning. it's still going to be a really hot day on this friday, the heat advisories continue for the south bay, parts of the north bay you see the pink the excessive heat warning a step above the heat advisory and going to be dangerously hot for today. we may set some more records, we set numerous records yesterday. we'll be close in vacaville, fairfield, concord and livermore as we reach over 100 degrees. pete suratos is live in walnut creek, we're still having to conserve electricity during the hottest hours of the day, right? >> reporter: that's right, kari. here in walnut creek it's cooler right now but we're expecting to see some triple digit heat once again. the flex alert will be in place again today pu it is different compared to yesterday. the time frame from 6:00 p.m. to

this week for thousands of people in the north bay. pg&e started with equipment problems late tuesday night, more than 5,000 customers inhne about four hours. "the press testimony" reports an underground cable failed. in a separate outage on catadi an underground transformer failed, in that case hundreds of homes lost power. follow meteorologist kari hall on twitter for those ongoing updates on that heat. she's keeping track of everything you need to know about the lingering high temperatures as they persist. her twitter handle is @karihallweather. an apparent shooting in walnut creek video from north california boulevard near the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. the crime tape up, bullet casings and tarp over the driver's side of a car there, but right now, police are not confirming anything. they are making calls, trying to find more answers for you. as soon as we have more information, we'll bring that to

you this morning. millions of americans are off of work today after president biden signed the law making juneteenth a federal holiday, recognizing the official end of slavery. only 14 republicans voted against it. that's given some in washington hope of compromise on other issues. "today in the bay's" tracie potts explains live from her home studio near washington, d.c., this morning. tracie? >> hi, marcus, good morning, everyone. so they came together on juneteenth. can lawmakers come to some agreement, some compromise on things like voting rights and infrastructure? there is hope here in washington this morning, though things are far from certain. a majority of democrats and republicans voted yes on the law that makes juneteenth a federal holiday. >> the bill is passed. recognizing the end of slavery. president biden says it's a

start. >> we can't rest until the promise of equality is fulfilled for every one of us in every corner of the nation. >> reporter: for democrats, taking action on voting rights. their for the people bill is stuck in the senate in part because democrat mow manchin won't vote for it. he's offering a compromise backed by stacey abrams. democrats plan a test vote tuesday. republican leaders are opposed. >> i just don't think the federal government should take over managing local elections no matter how do you it. >> reporter: there is also a compromise in the works on infrastructure, 11 republicans, nine democrats and one independent are pitching a $1.2 trillion plan that focuses on roads, bridges, rail and transit. >> this is merely a framework. this is a plan and it's a plan that i hope we remain somewhat faithful to. >> i feel confident we'll have something by monday.

>> reporter: it would be paid for with unspent covid funds. tracie potts, nbc news. vice president kamala harris is traveling to atlanta today as part of her month of action tour and launched a nationwide tour to reach millions of americans who still need protection against covid highlighting the need to get vaccinated and the ease in doing so. moving you forward with california's reopening, this is the first weekend since the state fully reopened with the mix of nice weather, expect even more people in restaurants and businesses. few are wearing masks. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is in our newsroom and sharon, lots of people are calling this the pandemic's final chapter. good morning. >> that's right, that's great news, gyes rah. employees and customers get to try out this first weekend without masks if they are fully vaccinated. we've heard about so many businesses trying to ramp up for this moment, many are trying to fill jobs to make it happen at restaurants and stores. now here is a recap of how it works for employees and

customers fully vaccinated. people should be able to do things like grocery shop and go to restaurants without masks, but businesses could still ask you to wear a mask. if you're not vaccinated, the state says you must still wear a mask at businesses and whether or not you're vaccinated you still need to wear it when on public transit at health facilities and at schools. now, this is a big relief to many employees who are a bit confused about customers allowed to drop their masks but employees still had to wear them this past week. cal osha says if you're fully vaccinated, you no longer have to wear a mask in most workplaces. if you're not vaccinated, you still have to wear one. gun newsom signed an order allowing the rules to take effect immediately. employers will have to document who has been vaccinated but aren't required to keep copies of vaccine cards. we spoke with the manager of one south bay restaurant. >> i'm asking everyone to bring vaccination card if they haven't been vaccinated or haven't given me proof, then they still need

to wear masks. if you want to wear your mask you can or if you don't want, to you don't have to. it's up to them. >> employers have to provide n95 masks to unvaccinated workers who request them. a whole new look celeb operating celebrating father's day. >> thank you, sharon. the oakland museum of california is reopening today and you can get in for free. this would be a great father's day gift if you're looking for something to do. it's been closed for the past 15 months because of covid but there are still safety protocols that will be in place, time, limited tickets, limited capacity and reduced hours. the museum is offering free access all weekend to celebrate. vallejo this weekend the sights and sounds of the solano county fair return but it's a little more muted than in years past. today through sunday drive-in concerts will take place and you could get your fill on the fried fair food. this weekend celebration also

includes a special juneteenth celebration tomorrow. so we have juneteenth celebrations, fairs, museums, so much going on throughout the bay area. meteorologist kari hall is letting us know what the weather will be if you're venturing out. >> yes, so let's just get you out the door for work this morning, and we're starting out with some fairly warm temperatures compared to what we're used to. in fremont it's in the low 60s and then we'll see it heating up again fairly quickly for today. so make sure you're prepared for the heat, staying hydrated and also dress appropriately, even though it's cool in some spots, here's where we're headed today, reaching 102 in livermore, 98 degrees in napa and kroes 97 degrees today. we'll talk about the weekend forecast in a few minutes. mike how is the drive to work? >> overall a great drive. breaking news out of the east bay, we'll focus on the green, green, green. not green right there.

triple-digit temperatures and when we'll cool off, coming up in a few minutes. and the big jam in the east bay, jam up south 880 past the san mateo bridge, just shy of the dumbarton bridge that crash still blocks all but one lane as the current status over in union city and for the futures, let's check in with bertha. >> hey, good morning. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. futures right now are pointing to a lower open on wall street, after a split session for stocks yesterday. the dow falling for the fourth straight day, down more than 200 points as investors continue to try to figure out what the federal reserve's slightly more hawkish stance now on interest rates is. the nasdaq was higher, the s&p was flat on the day. the ned signaling it could make two interest hate hikes as early as 2023, two years away.

the dow on pace for its worst week since january. carnival says a data breach in march may have exposed customers and employees' personal information on carnival, holland america and princess cruises. the company says outsiders may have gained access to social security passport numbers, birth dates, addresses and health information. that's a lot of info. carnival isn't saying how many may have been affected or whether that information has already been used but it has notified its employees and customers and working with a higher security firm to investigate what happened. cairnville was hit twice last year by ransomware attacks. honda is ending production of its hydrogen fuel cell and hybrid clarity model this summer. auto blog reports the decision is due to weak demand and honda's focus on electric vehicles. clarity struggled from the get-go with $75,000 and a lack

of hydrogen fueling stations. honda will continue to provide support for the foreseeable future. honda previously announced it would debut an electric car for 2024 and plans to sell only zero emission electric vehicles by 2040. marcus and cierra, we park on the street here in new york city in my neighborhood and it makes it a little tough to figure out what you do with an electric vehicle. i know that a lot of the garages have it, but i'm not sure if they charge a little extra for that. so that's one of the thing they have to figure out in the infa structure for those of us who park on the street. >> this is very true. we have them pretty much everywhere in the bay area. so good for us but yeah. >> the greater u.s. >> you're ahead of us. >> thanks, bertha. well we are three days from one of the biggest shopping days of the year, amazon prime day. >> prime day is creating a price par for major retailers. some companies are already

giving out discounts to better compete. nbc's sam brock has a look at the ripple effect amazon is having on stores near you. >> reporter: marcus, cierra, good morning. do you remember when christmas holidays were the biggest shopping events of the year? that is not the case anymore. amazon prime day which is two days coming up early next week has outpaced black friday cyber monday expectations. revenues could be ahead of cyber monday, that's how far we've come and frankly, this changed the game for so many retailers that have brick and mortar stores like target, walmart, best buy and what they're doing in cyberspace. all of the companies, guys, now have their own deals over the exact same dates, prime day started making about $1 billion a year when it debuted in 2015. last year was more than 10 billion and the company says its amount of discounts is just deepening. here's what a spokesperson told me.

the heat. all of our outdoor activities like going for a jog in campbell, starting out with low 60s, not bad, get out there early, take a look at the trend for today because by noon all bets are off. it's just like just chill out in the house and get some air conditioning. seven-day forecast is mg could up at the bottom of the screen as we zoom in on the somebody, reaching 101 degrees in morgan hill today and for the east bay even hotter, reaching 106 in at yok, martinez reaching 95. hayward today headed toward 89 degrees, at least it's still cool near the coast while you head over just short distance away, pa low al low 90 degrees. upper 70s in the mission district and north bay temperatures reach up to 106 in ukiah, napa reaching 98 degrees. we are going to have this hot weather for now. it's still going to be warm for the weekend. walnut creek seven-day forecast is trending from the triple

digits to the 70s all within the course of a few days. i know, this is crazy. but at least we don't have the warm weather lasting that long, and our seven-day forecast shows that we'll all cool off in the valleys going from highs over 102 today to 94 tomorrow, 91 on father's day, and then some 80s and eventually down to the 70s by tuesday. for san francisco, the changes won't be that drastic but we are going from the upper 70s today to the upper 60s and time for the end of the weekend into early next week. mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute? >> still looking slow for our key trouble spot over here, into union city out of hayward, south 880 jams up approaching alvarado niles just past that exit. we have this crash blocking all but one lane. chp is on scene, the tow truck says they can see the flashing cligts but don't have the overturned vehicle righted yet. no injuries reported just a big pain for your southbound commute, just shy of the dumbarton bridge, you can get

a live look at sfo, precious cargo is slithering on nearby grounds. these are san francisco garter snakes considered an endangered species and new fish and wildlife study finds about 1,300 occupy underdeveloped sfo land making up the largest population anywhere. the land is home to red-legged frogs one of the snakes' preferred menu options. gross. >> i actually like snakes. as a boy scout i liked to put them around my neck when we visited those places. >> no. >> no? okay, moving on. one of the newest members of team usa headed to tokyo is katie mclaughlin. over the past year she has started coaching high schoolers at north bay aquatics in marin.

today. 101 in morgan hill and san jose in the mid-90s, coming along with that heat will be the fire danger. we look at relative humidity levels still very dry in parts of the east bay, as well as the north bay, with the air dry and allowing any fires that start to spread rapidly. pete suratos is live in the east bay and walnut creek with an update on the fire danger today. >> reporter: yes, kari, as you mentioned, you're well aware of fire danger always a big time concern this time of year. we want to show you footage of a grass fire from yesterday in the san jose area. it came dangerously close to affecting a home there and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but again, that heat and wind combination is always a concern when we get the type of heat that we're seeing across parts of the bay area. we see rolling outages in the past to prevent those wildfires but the state of emergency

motion to appoint legal counsel in the squlop going juror misconduct retrial for scott peterson. last month prosecutors will not seek the death penalty and sentencing retrial, not wanting to bring up new pain for laci peterson's family members. he's serving out the sentence at san quentin for the murder of his wife and unborn son. thousands of u.s. government workers off work today in observance of juneteenth. it's a celebration at the end of slavery in the u.s. now we want to show you some video of president biden you see right here, this is signing the bill at the white house yesterday, juneteenth will be celebrated here in the bay area, with a wide range of events. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is in our newsroom looking at that and the bay area county that has been leading the way with all of this. sharon? >> that's right, marcus. santa clara county will celebrate its first juneteenth as a paid county holiday. it's the first county in this state to pass a resolution to do this. supervisors and community leaders will gather at the

african-american community center at 11:30. the santa clara county board of supervisors allocated $2.3 million to be put into a reserve to fund declaring juneteenth as a county holiday. the proposal inspired by conversations with the community regarding race, equity and systemic change during protests that happened following the death of george floyd last may. it will be celebrated every june 19th, which means most county offices will close and most county employees will have a paid day off. san francisco mayor london breed says the city will also celebrateity will have staff available for tranceses today. the warriors will have a celebration at chase center with employees later this month. so a lot of fun events in store for this weekend. back to you. >> yes, and i am emceeing the juneteenth festival in san jose so it's going to be a fun weekend for so many. there's also one going on in san francisco so a lot of fun.

neighbors in one wine county location are suing calling it a glorified time share disrupting the neighborhood fabric. pacaso says this is a limited joint ownership the timeshare label is inaccurate and filing its own lawsuit accusing the town of st. helena of waging a campaign against its clients. the city of san francisco finally breaking ground on a park more than a decade in the making. the site is a former boat yard in the bay area hunter's point area. the week's work is kicking off and turning the site into a waterfront park, linking two miles of shoreline at a reported cost of $140 million. those renovations expected to take four years. if you live in one part of the north bay, expect to see your price of water bill go up. the north marin water district board approved a rate hike by 6% for people living in the novato area that starts july 1st. the "marin independent journal" reports 19,000 customers could

see their bill increase by $7.50. thes the hikes are the second in a five-year plan to pay for employees operation and water delivery costs. okay, on friday, we like to look ahead to the weekend to get a look at what we can expect and kari, we were talking about this weekend, i'm hosting the african-american community agency's juneteenth festival outside, it will be a hot one but temperatures will cool down at least from what we've seen the last few days. >> he's hoping. >> yes, just a little bit. bear with me here. we have so much to celebrate this weekend. we're celebrating pride. we're celebrating juneteenth, we're celebrating fathers, we're celebrating reopening california, all of these events going on. let's kick it off tonight in the fillmore with the juneteenth festival, temperatures warm in the mid-70s there but cooling off as we go into this evening and yes, marcus, for you it's going to be hot out there. but not too juneteenth

in the park at santa clara county fairgrounds reaching into the upper 80s during the middle of the day, and i was really excited to see that leta c. will be performing. if you miss her in san jose, check her out sunday at the stir and grow festival also celebrating juneteenth and temperatures reaching into the upper 60s so it's going to be cooler there as that sunshine continues. as we also are going to be dealing with hot temperatures, maybe you'll be going to six flags, hurricane harbor in concord. we're up to 104 today. 95 tomorrow, and still in the upper 80s on sunday. so some warm weather throughout the weekend, checking out the water park and the solano county fair is going on, hot temperatures there in vallejo reaching 88 degrees but we'll see upper 70s for the rest of the weekend. we'll talk about what's going on today, could coming up in a few minutes.

here thank goodness because look at the record high, 110 degrees, but these other areas are going to be pretty close. va savile, fairfield, concord, livermore just a few degrees below our record so we'll have to watch that thermometer closely and hope we don't set a new record today. as we look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, big changes over the next few days but it's still hot today and we're reaching up to 95 degrees in san jose. 96 in east san jose, morgan hill topping out at 101 degrees, even hotter headed to the inland east bay, with antioch today reaching 106. martinez a high of 95 and up to 89 degrees in hayward. near the coast nice and cool and that continues today but head on over the mountains and we'll see the peninsula temperatures jumping up to 90 degrees for palo alto and san francisco reaches into the mid-60s and the marina district the mission will

here, top of the screen, pointing out the cluster of lights here, folks are forced over a couple of lanes, southbound 101 coming toward our camera, we are at university. there is willow, marsh, let's look at the nap. that's where the crash is, just shy of marsh road and the backup had been forming quite a bit. speed sensors are starting to recover, opened one more lane southbound highway 101. this is middle field which is clear as far as the traffic flow but has signals, same thing for the bay, very crowded as folks equity before marsh and getting back on somewhere around university, probably, watch for the surface traffic over the next couple of minutes. we're looking at progress i think they may be clearing lanes again. i'll bring you the latest update. crash in the east bay that cleared from union city mild slowing. san jose this kicked in over the last few minutes. i'm concerned there may be a crash 101 somewhere around alum rock or oakland road, tracking that slowdown right there for that portion of silicon valley.

contra costa county looks great for highway 4, still at speed all the way through concord toward 242. vasco road into slowing out of brentwood, byron, discovery bay to 580 pretty much at speed, mild slowing out of the altamont pass which is what we expect. happening now, more cuts may be on the way for sutter health. happened in mid-january. the facility not identified. intelligence sources say the hacker deleted programs to treat drinking water. northern california intelligence leaders declined to comment on the breach or who carried it out but did tell "the chronicle" it is not an attempt to poison drinking water. teachers in the largest district in california have reached a deal to return to in-person learning for the upcoming school year. l.a. unified's board of education is expected to approve the agreement next week. the deal includes standards for continued covid testing, mask wearing and other safety protocols. back to the bay area when students return to school in marin this august, masks will be required indoors. that mandate will include students and staff and the county will not require vaccinations for school employees but if staff members choose not tested weekly. other protocols are still pending. now to an act of kindness, gaining a lot of attention this morning. >> a recent massachusetts high
