but a step above that would be the excessive heat warning, where we will have another day of dangerous heat for the inland areas as the highs reach over 100 degrees. let's look at all of our microclimates and where we're headed for today. mid-70s for san francisco, lower 80s oakland. morgan hill reaching 101 degrees. all of this heat may put a strain on the power grid. trying to avoid that, pete. live inning withk with what, is the update on that? >> reporter: good morning to you. a bit cool in walnut creek but it will heat up later in the day. as a result of this extreme heat as kro the state we know we'll see that flex alert in place, a little different compared to yesterday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., shorter from yesterday's 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. window and again you're being asked to avoid using major appliances and

try to keep your home cooler earlier in the day. if you have an electric car, wait to charge it up after the flex alert is over. cal iso doesn't expect any rolling outages but some folks were notified by pg&e yesterday about the possibility of rolling outages which didn't come as a surprise to those customers. >> doesn't surprise me not after the last few years with the power outages. >> makes sense and it was hot, super hot today. >> reporter: despite the alerts no rolling outages were yesterday. governor gavin newsom issued a state of emergency so additional power will be freed up if needed. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks, pete. new details on power outages this week for thousands of people in the north bay.

problems late tuesday night, more than 5,000 customers in rohnert park lost power for about four hours. "the press democrat" reports an underground cable failed. in a separate outage on catadi an underground transformer failed, in that case hundreds of homes lost power. >> follow meteorologist kari hall on twitter for those ongoing updates on that heat. she's keeping track of everything you need to know about the lingering high temperatures as they persist. her twitter handle is @karihallweather. developing right now in the middle east, a second night of israeli air strikes hitting hamas, targets in gaza israeli is calling it retaliation for recent attacks which they say included incendiary balloons starting eight fires yesterday alone. there are no immediate reports of casualties in this latest round of air strikes. last month a truce ended 11 days of some of the heaviest fighting in years. millions of americans are off work today after president biden signed a law making

juneteenth a federal holiday recognizing the end of slavery. only 14 republicans voted against it, giving some in washington hope of compromise on other issues. "today in the bay's" tracie potts explains more live from her home studio near d.c. this morning. tracie? >> hi, marcus, good morning, everyone. rarely do we see democrats and republicans coming together in the numbers that we saw to pass the juneteenth bill. now the question is, will it spill over to some other more controversial subjects like voting rights and infrastructure. a majority of democrats and republicans voted yes on the law that makes juneteenth a federal holiday. >> the bill is passed. recognizing the end of slavery. president biden says it's a start. >> we can't rest until the promise of equality is fulfilled

for every one of us in every corner of the nation. >> reporter: for democrats, taking action on voting rights. their for the people bill is stuck in the senate in part because democrat mow manchin won't vote for it. he's offering a compromise backed by stacey abrams. >> it's an important step forward as we try to protect the freedom to vote. >> reporter: democrats plan a test vote tuesday. republican leaders are opposed. >> i just don't think the federal government should take over managing local elections no matter how do you it. >> reporter: there is also a compromise in the works on infrastructure, 11 republicans, nine democrats and one independent are pitching a $1.2 trillion plan that focuses on roads, bridges, rail and transit. >> this is merely a framework. this is a plan and it's a plan that i hope we remain somewhat faithful to. >> i feel confident we'll have something by monday. >> reporter: it would be paid for with unspent covid funds. tracie potts, nbc news. vice president kamala harris is traveling to atlanta today as

part of her month of action tour and launched a nationwide tour to reach millions of americans who still need protection against covid highlighting the need to get vaccinated and the ease in doing so. here is the latest on california's vaccine progress. nearly 24 million people have gotten their first dose. more than 18 million are fully vaccinated. nearly 70% of santa clara county residents are now fully vaccinated and in a push to get a final segment of the community immunized, mountain view's clinic is giving out shots on a drop-in basis each weekday through june 30th. moving you forward with california's reopening. >> with the mix of nice weather, expect even more people in restaurants and businesses. few are wearing masks. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is in our newsroom and sharon, lots of people are he pandemic's final chapter. >> that's right. we're already seeing businesses crowded. employees and customers get to try out this first weekend without masks if they are fully

vaccinated. we've heard about so many businesses trying to ramp up for this moment, many are trying to fill jobs to make it happen at restaurants and stores. now here is a recap of how it works for employees and customers fully vaccinated. people should be able to do things like grocery shop and go to restaurants without masks, but businesses could still ask you to wear a mask. if you're not vaccinated, the state says you must still wear a mask at businesses and whether or not you're vaccinated you still need to wear it when on public transit at health facilities and at schools. now, this is a big relief to many employees who are a bit confused about customers allowed to drop their masks but employees still had to wear them this past week. cal osha says if you're fully vaccinated, you no longer have to wear a mask in most workplaces. if you're not vaccinated, you still have to wear one. governor newsom signed an order allowing the rules to take effect immediately. employers will have to document

who has been vaccinated but aren't required to keep copies of vaccine cards. we spoke with the manager of one south bay restaurant. >> i'm asking everyone to bring vaccination card if they haven't been vaccinated or haven't given me proof, then they still need to wear masks. but i told them if you want to wear your mask you can or if you don't want, to you don't have to. it's totally up to them. >> employers have to provide n95 masks to unvaccinated workers who request them. a whole new look celeb operating celebrating father's day. i'm very interested to see who is still donning the beards all of the fathers. let's see if they get rid of them or not. back to you. >> they can just cut it low like me. thanks, sharon. happening today, the oakland museum of california is reopening and you can get in for free. it's been closed for the past 15 months. there will be safety protocols in place like time ticketing, limited capacity and some reduced hours. the museum is offering free access all weekend to celebrate

sights and sounds of the solano county fair return but it's a little more muted than in years past. today through sunday drive-in concerts will take place and you could get your fill on the fried fair food. this weekend celebration also includes a special juneteenth celebration tomorrow. a live look outside to a very foggy san francisco. the weekend is finally upon us. we still have a little bit left of friday but a nice long weekend ahead of us. meteorologist karihallweather talks about what you can expect for your last day in the work week as well as your weekend. good morning, kari. >> good morning. and yes we still need to make plans around the heat. all of your outdoor activities are going to be timed based on the temperature. take a look at our forecast for campbell, if you want to head out for a run, you have yard work to do, outdoor activities, getting done etart and it's

quickly going to warm up again today. at 11:00 we're at 88 degrees and during the lunch hour you want to stay in air conditioning as we're already in the mid-90s in the south bay. look at our microclimates what to expect for today, reaching 103 in fairfield. 66 in half moon bay stays comfortable. 106 in clearlake and ukiah today. we'll have a wide range in temperatures not only today but the weekend we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, what is the update on the breaking news? >> the' not your typical friday drive. the peninsula has slowing. don't see that any of the four days but especially friday. south 101 marsh road a crash blocks your left two lanes. right two lanes get by, the traffic is backed up to the exit prior. folks may be getting off and going to ray road that is moving smoothly but a lot of the signals there and longer drive getting toward middlefield, both take you down to willow where

you can get back onto 101 and the one short section of slowing that alert has been called by chp and indeed that slowing we saw northbound 101 approaching oakland road there was a crash there, a number of vehicles i believe two or three got over to the shoulder there, so lanes are clear now. the early impact and the slowing as everything cleared up to the shoulder, distraction north for the minor south bay commute. on a friday that minor backup may be more than you're expecting. everything else looks clear including the bay bridge toll plaza but a look at the san mateo bridge, i want to look westbound toward the high-rise, on the high-rise there's a couple of reports of a disabled vehicle. no crews have arrived on scene yet, traffic is flowing smoothly. we'll track that closely. back to you. >> thanks, mike. under investigation, still ahead for you at 6:25, questions about recent crashes involving tesla, how it may impact the future of self-driving cars here in the u.s. and a preview of next week's amazon prime day, the items on sale and how it's changing the rules of the shopping game.

right now on this friday morning at 6:30, we are under a microclimate weather alert in the east bay. pleasant hill going from 67 degrees at 7:00 to 98 degrees at 1:00. unbearably hot. we'll talk about a cooler weekend ahead and the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. >> man. at least there's less red on the map, heading south still we have that alert by chp, a crash blocking a couple of lanes, as you head toward marsh road, less backup, we'll talk you around this slowing and show you more coming up. stock market opens today, despite the new federal holiday being observed today and of course the futures right now in the red. the new york stock exchange needs to have meetings with federal regulators and other exchanges before it can decide whether stocks will be traded on next year's juneteenth. the market closes for many but not all federal holidays.

walmart is doubling down on its drone deliveries, the retailer is investing in a startup it first partnered with last year, this is doing trial deliveries for covid self-testing kits with 4,700 stores located within ten miles of most of u.s. population, walmart says that it wants to scale drone delivery up to an every day option. we are three days from one of the biggest shopping days of the year, amazon prime day but prime day is creating a price war for other major retailers. some companies giving out discounts to better compete. nbc's sam brock has a look at ripple effect amazon is having on the stores near you. >> reporter: cierra, good morning. do you remember when christmas holidays were the biggest shopping events of the year? that is not the case anymore. amazon prime day which is actually two days coming up early next week has now outpaced all of those black friday cyber monday expectations right now are that revenues from prime day

could be ahead of cyber monday, that's how far we've come and frankly, this has changed the game for so many retailers that have brick and mortar stores like target, walmart, best buy and cyberspace. all of those companies have their own deals over the exact same dates. prime day started making about $1 billion a year when it debuted in 2015. last year's was more than $10 billion and the company says its amount of discounts is just deepening. here is what a spokesperson told me. >> we had more than a million deals and over 2 million. we worked hard to make sure we could give our prime members even more deals to take advantage of this year. >> reporter: new wrinkles, performances you can stream for free from artists like billy eilish and curated businesses selling products from black-owned, women-owned

it's time to look at the forecast on this friday. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the hot temperatures and still dealing with those right now, kari. >> yes, we are, and for some of us it really didn't cool off too much during the overnight hours at least not what we're used to. take a look at our current temperatures, yes, it's 79 degrees in fairfield, but then you head on over to napa it's 59 degrees. we are seeing a wide range in temperatures. 65 in san jose. 71 in hayward. the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. let's talk about where we can cool off today in the coastline pacifica we're going to see highs staying mostly in the 60s today, that is going to be so nice with all of that sunshine, a great place to end out the work week. as we look at our south bay temperatures, it's going to be hot, reaching 97 in cupertino, 100 degrees in gilroy today, and even hotter in oakland and once

again we have some 60s in half moon bay, daly city but you head over to san mateo and it's 85 for a high today. we had some upper 70s in san francisco and the mission district, and our north bay temperatures will reach up to 97 in santa rosa and in novato. napa today 98 degrees. as we go through the forecast i want to show you a spot like walnut creek. we are still very hot today, and tomorrow, too, but you can see the trend here, like steps going down each day and we get down to a high of the degrees on tuesday. so we have big changes ahead at least we know that eventually we'll be able to turn the air conditioner off but we are still dealing with a dangerous heat today and for father's day inland valleys headed outside, just keep in mind that it's going to be warm. feeling much better on monday and upper 70s by wednesday.

san francisco we're still looking at some mid-70s today, but then upper 60s by the end of the weekend into early next week. heading over to you, mike, you've been watching some breaking news. how is that going? >> it's still going slowly here. southbound 101 a short section of the bay shore freeway headed south into palo alto at marsh road, this crash still blocks your left two lanes. i'm told there's oil in the roadway that will need some cleanup and chp asked for fsp, the freeway service patrol to get over there if they can lend assistance to clear one of the vehicles. 280 is well clear of that, middlefield and bear are cleared. i'll call out bridges, you see the green sensors all over the bay. the san mateo bridge issue reported at the high-rise is back behind us at the toll plaza where the second of the incidents is being active right now. we see a smooth drive across that span and the toll plaza for the bay bridge the only thing we have is a lot of sunlight and

one of the newest members of team usa is headed to tokyo. it is cal berkeley grad katie mclaughlin. she will join stanford's katie ledecky on the 4x200 freestyle relay. over the past year mclaughlin started coaching high schoolers at north bay aquatics in marin. this week some of the kids there she coaches held a watch party and of course you could see ecstatic when she qualified. >> i feel so lucky to have had her as a coach. she brings a unique perspective to swimming that i've never had before. she's such a mentor to all of us and i think especially the girls >> she's our biggest role modal for me and being able to see her accomplish such big things on

good morning, kari. >> good morning. we've still been talking about how hot it's been and how hot it will be again today as we take a live look in oakland starting out hazy but at least it is a little bit cooler here, comparing that to our inland temperature, where we may be setting some records today. vacaville, fairfield, concord and livermore as we reach into the triple digits again today. we will also be keeping an eye on the fire danger, i'll head it over to you for more on that, marcus. >> the coverage continues on the extreme heat, high temperatures causing concern for firefighters and homeowners. "today in the bay's" pete suratos live for us in walnut creek and pete, what can people do? >> reporter: good morning. fire danger always a concern this time of year considering these conditions. here is video from a grass fire that took place yesterday in san jose. you can see it in the video it came dangerously close to affecting a home in the area but the calls of the fire is still

under investigation. but that heat and wind combination is always a big time concern. we've seen rolling outages in the past to prevent these wildfires, the state has extra power if needed as a result of the state of emergency declaration. but again today, we are having that flex alert and as far as the time frame for that flex alert from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. tonight, of course you want to avoid using major appliances and keep those thermostats at 78 degrees or higher, so trying to keep the home cooler during the day. cal iso doesn't expect outages as long as folks conserve energy which they did yesterday. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." santa rosa helping people be better prepared for fire season.

free weather radios are given out and the first two of drive-through events this month, takes place at santa rosa high school tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. a fema grant paid for thousands of radios. >> download our nbc bay area app, get weather updates on your phone and tailor the forecast for your area, drop in your zip code and find out how hot it will be where you are. >> 6:32. no word from walnut creek police on an apparent shooting investigation, this is video from hours ago on north california boulevard near the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. you can see the crime tape with bullet casings on the ground and tarp over the driver's side of the car. right now police not confirming anything. we're making those calls and as soon as we get that information, of course we will bring that to you here on "today in the bay" as well as online. in the wake of the deadly rampage at the vta rail yard, agency leaders today will hold an emergency meeting, that meeting will center around a request for an emergency declaration and state funding to help get south bay light rail service back on track. there's no time line for trains to resume and the rail yard's future is unclear.

nine workers were shot and killed by a co-worker a little more than three weeks ago. convicted killer scott peterson is set to appear virtually in a san mateo courtroom later today. the judge is expected to hear a motion to appoint legal counsel in the ongoing juror misconduct retrial for scott peterson. last month prosecutors will not seek the death penalty and sentencing retrial, not wanting to bring up new pain for laci peterson's family members. he's serving out the sentence at san quentin for the murder of his wife and unborn son. thousands of u.s. government workers off work today in observance of juneteenth. it's a celebration at the end of slavery in the u.s. now we want to show you some video of president biden you see right here, this is signing the bill at the white house yesterday, juneteenth will be celebrated here in the bay area, with a wide range of events. celebrate its first juneteenth as a paid county holiday. it's the first county in this state to pass a resolution to do this. supervisors and community leaders will gather at the african-american community service agency at 11:30 to celebrate. the santa clara county board of supervisors allocated $2.3 million to be put into a reserve to fund declaring juneteenth as a county holiday. the proposal inspired by conversations with the community regarding race, equity and systemic change during protests that happened following the death of george floyd last may. it will be celebrated every june 19th, which means most county offices will close and most county employees will have a paid day off. san francisco mayor london breed says the city will also celebrate juneteenth but since it's such short notice the city will have staff available for celebration at chase center with employees later this month.

federal health officials have announced a major effort to develop medication to treat the virus. the white house will spend more than $3 billion to develop new anti viral over-the-counter pills to treat covid and future viruses at home. meanwhile, that delta variantt of all u.s. cases. but in young people, the earlier symptoms can be confused with a cold, headache, sore throat, runny nose and a fever. >> if you are vaccinated, you are protected. but if you are not, the threat of variants is real and growing. >> vaccination rates are slowing across the country, with a little more than half the people over 12 fully vaccinated. new impact from our climate in crisis, in one part of the north bay. the north marin water district board approved a 6% rate hike for anyone living in novato starting july 1st. the "marin journal" reports 19,000 customer will see their

bill increase by $750. the hikes are the second in a five-year plan to pay for employee operations and water delivery costs. morgan hill leaders are planning to cut the consumer water supply by 40%. lawn and garden watering it only occur for 15 minutes a day either before 9:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. odd number addresses can water mondays and thursdays while even number addresses can water tuesdays and fridays. here we go on this friday, we're getting ready for the weekend and kari, i'm not only excited because it's the weekend but the temperatures will cool down just a bit. >> yes, it's going to be a great weekend. lots to celebrate here from pride to juneteenth to fathers day and california reopening. let's kick it off with theeng with the fillmore and the juneteenth festival happening in san francisco. starts this evening but also continues throughout the day tomorrow and if you're going to be out there today, feeling nice with some low 70s to start but

6:47. we want to turn back to that extreme heat. here is a live look outside of san francisco, sun coming up but you can see there a little hazy as we enter that third day of dangerous heat. let's get back over to meteorologist kari hall with more on our forecast. hi, kari. >> good morning. and fortunately for those who spots it's not going to be extremely hot today, as we take a look at our current temperatures, where we're beginning this morning, ooh, it's 69 degrees already in brentwood. it's 62 in oakland. 51 in san francisco, and it is 58 in morgan hill. now we're starting out warm, but we get even hotter as we go into later this morning as well as into the afternoon and our temperatures are expected to continue to stay hot for today, but we do have some relief and places where you can cool off. pacifica upper 60s here today and it's going to be nice and

sunny, this is what we mean by microclimates. we have 60s in one spots and highs in other spots. vacaville, concord and livermore will be close to records but a lot of the numbers are just below the mark. as we look at high temperatures up to 101 in morgan hill, 93 in milpitas and 106 in antioch. danville 102 and fremont a high there of 94 degrees. half moon bay will be in the mid-60s but you head over to palo alto and it's 90 for a high today. san francisco will see highs in the upper 70s, our north bay temperatures will reach to the upper 90s to over 100 degrees. still some hot temperatures in napa, sonoma, ukiah reaching 106 degrees. as we go into the weekend, i wanted to show you what to expect with our trend going down in spots like walnut creek, and almost looks like stairs because

we go from highs over to the u 80s and from the lower 80s to the upper 70s early next week. so big time cooling coming our way. do keep in mind that for father's day it's still going to be warm. doesn't really cool off significantly into early next week and san francisco will see some mid-70s today, in the upper 60s by the end of the weekend into early next week. mike, what is the update now on that morning commute? >> kari, we have the issue still on the we inpeninsula. the san mateo bridge unexpectedly slow across the high-rise, you can kind of make out the gleaming tops of cars. a lot of slowing develops even though the chp reports the incident they found near the toll plaza it still looks like the original incident r there'sg

going on, that's the slower drive. the dumbarton bridge a much clearer drive westbound if you can choose the two and you have plenty of time to get down there. on the peninsula we have a crash south 101 at marsh. the incident cleeshd and lane restrictions and there may be a traffic break over the next hour as crews arife to clear up the oil. castro valley y we have slowing approaching there off the dublin interchange. the crash may be there or this disabled vehicle may be there for another half hour so there may be more slowing out of the tri-valley and in toward the castro valley y itself. the bay bridge toll plaza the metering lights were turned on 6:25 this morning, seems to be the latest they turn them on now as the volume down the east shore freeway is steady. the backup slowly building but still your friday is not without the weight over here at the toll plaza. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now, a new warning from the fda on a product you may have in your home. vapors from hand sanitizers of all kinds can have side effects,

more. >> marcus and cierra, it will be very busy this weekend. employees and customers will get to try out the first weekend without masks if they are fully vaccinated. businesses are trying to ramp up for this moment, many are frantically trying to fill jobs to make it happen at restaurants and stores. here is a recap of how it works for employees and customers, fully vaccinated people should be able to do things like grocery stop and go to restaurants without masks, but businesses could still ask you to wear a mask. if you're not vaccinated, the state says you must still wear a mask at businesses and whether or not you're vaccinated, you'll still need to wear it when on public transit at health facilities and at schools. this is a lig relief to many employees who were a bit confused about customers allowed to drop their masks but employees had to wear them this past week. governor newsom signed an order allowing the new cal osha rules to take effect immediately. employers will have to document who has been vaccinated, but
