talking. it's monday, june 21st early today starts now and good morning, everybody. i'm lindsey reiser. >> i'm phillip mena. we begin with tropical depression claudette which is expected to gain strength this morning. the storm brought destructive winds and flooding to the gulf coast. a woman in georgia was trapped in this car when a tree and power lines came crashing down heavy rain led to a tragedy on an alabama interstate. ten people including nine children were killed in a pileup the victims include a father and 9-month-old daughter and eight girls in a small bus ages 4 to 17 they were from a ranch that provides a home for needy, neglected, school-aged children. the high school that some of the girls attended held a day of see on sunday. let's find out where that severe weather is headed this morning nbc meteorologist janessa webb joining us now tracking

claudette's path good morning, janessa. >> hi, good morning. good morning, everyone currently claudette over north carolina close to the raleigh durham area. the problem with the storm is it's sparking up weather it's spawning tornadoes and flash time flooding a big problem. 55 miles south southwest of raleigh, north carolina. what's going to happen as it inches closer to the coast, it will transition back into a tropical storm the reason for that, it has some warm water it will get some energy. as it flows off shore, it will continue to cause a storm surge situation across the northeast we'll watch boston all the way into new york city, which you can see by later on tonight it we'll have a tropical storm system and then it will continue its trek all the way into nova scotia this is going to be a big-time flood issue with flash floods into the carolinas

south carolina, north carolina, we'll watch dc this morning where we can potentially see two inches of potential rain with isolated areas up to three inches another element with strong, strong winds we'll talk about that coming up. the white house is ramping up efforts to meet president biden's fourth of july vaccination goal which is two weeks away on friday the administration celebrated a milestone of 300 million covid-19 doses in the president's first 150 days in office, but the u.s. appears unlikely to reach the president's vaccination goal of 70% of adults with one shot as that more contagious delta variant continues to spread. as of today, at least 65% of adults have gotten at least one shot and more than 143 million are fully vaccinated cases of the delta variant are rising though in parts of the country. rural areas like missouri and kansas, they are seeing an outbreak of the variant which

originally emerged in india. it's accounted for 10% of new covid cases in the united states meanwhile, the department of homeland security has announced that u.s. borders of mexico and canada will remain closed, at least until july 21st, to reduce the spread of the virus. brazil surpassed half a million covid-19 deaths over the weekend. a truck accidentally drove through a crowd at a florida pride parade one man was killed and another injured. this happened in will ton manners near ft. lauderdale. the victims and members are members of the gay man's chorus. the driver accelerated hitting two people and crashed into the fence of a business. the 77-year-old suffers from a walking ailment and was chosen to drive the lead vehicle in the parade this year officials say it was unintentional. no charges have been zbrield president biden is back in d.c. after his first trip over seas, and facing a new set of challenges, from russian cyber

as the storm pushes off shore, there will be a severe weather threat for today into tomorrow afternoon. for today it's all of the northeast all the way down to sections of the mid-atlantic 26 million people under some kind of severe weather risk. it's the damaging winds that are going to be picking up as the system races off shore there is some minor flooding that we'll continue to watch across north carolina to south carolina this morning. it's just a few counties, but this flash flooding really going to be hazardous across the that humidity, very high, in the mid 70s. we'll take a look at the rest of the nation weather wise coming up guys >> talk to you in a bit,

country this weekend in chicago, 5 people killed and 44 injured in more than 20 shootings throughout the weekend. in philadelphia, two people are dead and four others wounded after two separate shootings one of the victims was a 3-year-old who was shot in the leg but is expected to survive. the summer travel fever is hitting american airlines especially hard. the airlines is canceling hundreds of flights over staffing shortage and maintenance issues the carrier is struggling to keep up with the surge in travel demand just this weekend over 300 flights were canceled. it will be trimming 1% of the schedule through mid july. several people hurt in two separate hot air balloon incidents in colorado. according to officials there, three people taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after a balloon crash landed in chatfield state park outside denver three others were examined at the scene and a second balloon had a rough landing an one rider with minor injuries. the second pilot said both had
