it's times like these you learn to live again. the foo fighters rocked a packed madison square garden and marked a milestone for new york "early today" starts right now. good monday morning, i'm phillip mena. >> i'm lindsey reiser. tropical storm claudette is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm this morning. it's left a path of destruction along the gulf coast the storm has been linked to at least 12 deaths in alabama heavy rain led to a tragedy on an alabama interstate. according to the butler county coroner, 10 people including 9 children were killed in a pileup the victims include a father and his 9-month-old daughter who was in an suv and eight girls in a small bus ages 4 to 17 they were from a ranch that provides a home for needy, neglected and abused school-aged children the high school that some of the kids attended held a day of

remembrance and a prayer service yesterday. let's find out where the severe weather is this morning nbc meteorologist janessa webb isd morning. >> hi.od morning, everyone this is a big-time severe weather threat still a tropical depression and still dumping a lot of rain. it is racing across north carolina just outside of raleigh, north carolina, moving at a speed out of the east northeast at 20 miles per hour but the severe weather and flash flooding still going to remain an issue for inland areas in north carolina yes, it does regain strength as it makes its way to coastal areas of north carolina. by early this morning i do think it turns back into a tropical storm. it will gain some steam off shore and this will cause some high surf and some storm concerns across the northeast before it starts to make its way into nova scotia as we go into tuesday. it's the flood threat behind it.

the nation's broadband network this is a bipartisan plan. it would focus on traditional infrastructure, rebuilding roads and bridges. republican backers say this is the best way to get to 60 votes but progressives are arguing for a much bigger package. >> there's a lot of interest in having a bipartisan roposal. this helps president biden keep that pledge of having an infrastructure package but also to keep his pledge of doing things across the aisle and getting something done. >> what is in the bipartisan bill in terms of spending is, from what i can see, mostly good it is roads and bridges and we need to do that. that is what we are proposing in our legislation but in much greater numbers. >> reporter: the senate's also taking up voting rights this week set for a test vote tomorrow on advancing the for the people act. right now it doesn't appear to have enough support to break a filibuster then there was a compromise offered by democrat joe manchin as a moderate, but that
