"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm cierra johnson in for laura garcia this morning. >> i'm marcus washington. we begin with breaking news out of richmond. police investigating an overnight shooting at redell is live outside of police headquarters. one relative says this is a deadly shooting. >> reporter: right. we believe two people have been shot and killed.

good morning to sear ra and marcus. we are in touch with the richmond police department and we are trying to get information and they said they would get back to us shortly. everything we know comes from family members. a number of people were shot around 11:00 last night, this was at a home on the 2100 block of dunn avenue here in richmond. it's not far from the intersection with 23rd street. one family member tells us his young nephew was killed. another family member tells us his uncle was killed. that's at least two people shot and killed. we believe at least four more were wounded. a family member explained to us that everyone had gathered for a guatemalan marimba, music and dancing to celebrate father's day. we don't know what led up to the shooting nor if we know police have made any arrests. we are in touch with richmond police and trying get them to give us some information. we expect that shortly. reporting live outside the richmond police department, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. this morning, the investigation continues after a

the president looking at cyber security and how to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of a different country, another country. >> reporter: today, washington is mulling over president biden's meeting with vladimir putin. not only about warding off more cyber attacks but whether he and the russian leader can stabilize a buildup of nuclear weapons. >> the russians have got a lot of new novel weapons that can sort of hit us in all kinds of unfortunate ways. the russians themselves are extraordinary kernds about some of our long-range precision strike conventional weapons and we have to find a way of talking about them. >> reporter: a new president in iran offers hope that president biden can reinstate a nuclear deal there. iran is motivated, hoping to end sanctions. >> our paramount priority is to prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. we believe diplomacy is the best way to achieve that, rather than military conflict. >> reporter: back home, congress is considering a trillion dollar

garbage and recycling will be picked up if this is your day. a key decision may be coming in the aftermath of the rail yard shooting. investigators are expected to take the first steps of getting light rails running again. the board approved two emergency measures that allow them to spend up to $2 million to repair the rail yard. surveillance cameras show some of the massive police response to the rampage. this is when the disgruntled worker killed nine of his coworkers last month. our investigative team was the first to obtain vta dispatch tape calling in the shooting as it was had happening. take a listen. >> we have shots fired. make sure doors are closed. >> hi, communication. >> michelle, we have a -- we have shots fired in guadeloupe, i'm sorry in san pedro.

several others were injured. it happened just as the festival and parade in wilton manners was about to get under way. fort lauderdale gay men's chorus said the tri-valley and people injured were all part of their group. when it comes to helping people make in the bay, oakland leaders are reportedly formulating a long term and short term plan for one property near lake merritt. the chronicle reports developers want to create more than 350 housing units in two planned buildings. in the short time the site may be filled with tiny homes. the property is located on a vacant one acre parcel near lake merritt. the development is sitting in bureaucratic limbo and right now it's the site of a homeless encampment. city leaders are hoping to put 60 tiny homes there temporarily until developers get the green light. the tiny homes may be there this summer. all right. time to get a look at that forecast for you on this monday morning. get you ready out the door this

week. coming off of a warm but nice weekend. meteorologist kari hall has a look at the numbers we can expect today. >> yes. it's going to be very nice again today as we're starting out this morning heading out the door in oakland with temperatures in the mid 50s. it's going to gradually warm up today. in fact, pretty comfortable compared to what we've had recently. we can see the temperature trend here over the next several hours going if the mid 50s to the 60s. high temperatures here today reach the low 70s. it will be as hot as 90 degrees in clearlake while antioch will reach the mid 80s, san jose reaching 82 degrees and we're going to keep the 60s in san francisco. our temperatures continue to cool off over the next few days but we have a lot more changes ahead. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. what's happening right now for the commute? >> we've got changes ahead for the commute and we will see some slowing but right now very mild. south bay a new incident may have popped up on 680.

we'll check on that as you pass by the 101 interchange. 84 slows a bit. this is what we expect to see. kicks in a few minutes later, traffic building out of the altamont pass without any problems. highway 4 easy drive out of antioch. across the carquinez, the maze is fine. travel plans cans snlds we'll tell you the reason american airlines is halting hundreds of flights and has nothing to do with a cyber attack. it's a prime day for internet shoppers. the amazon online shopping frenzy is under way. the website is working to crack down on and the retailers serving up serious competition this year.

i should point it out both sides of 101 are working. also working our friend dominic. >> good start of summer morning to you. i am dominic chu from cnbc global headquarters. wall street is set to open higher this morning coming off its worst week since october. stocks falling on friday as investors digest new economic forecasts from the federal reserve and worry of interest rate hikes could come sooner than expected. that follows comments from one fed official to cnbc on friday that he sees higher interest rates as soon as next year. the dow dropping 3.5% last week while the nasdaq and the s&p 500 also ended the week in the red. in focus for investors, this week, we've got reports on home sales, also durable goods, income and spending, consumer sentiment and unemployment so a very busy week on the economic data front. americans are dining out again, but target wants to lure them back to the grocery store aisle. the retailer is adding food and drinks to deal days, that's its

answer to amazon prime day going on right now. the discounts run through tomorrow. target will give $10 gift cards to customers who spend $50 or more on groceries while using same day delivery or curbside pick-up. groceries are the key reason target sales surged and gained market share during the virus pandemic. and google may be working on an answer to apple's find my phone location feature. nine to five google reports a beta version of that tool has shown up in the google play services section with code referencing the ability for android phones to help locate other devices. currently the find my device system can only find android phones that are actually turned on, have a data or wi-fi signal and have their location services enabled. google is not commenting on this. marcus and sierra, i am not a big loser of my phone, but my wife is, so we need those features for any device that we have. >> yeah. you know, for a lot of people,

you keep your phone tight. >> sometimes i look for it and it's in my hand. >> i've done that before too. it happens. >> thanks, dom. new details for you and summer travel fever is apparently hitting american airlines, especially hard. the airline canceling hundreds of flights over staffing shortages and maintenance issues. the carrier is struggling to keep up with the surge in travel demand. over the weekend more than 300 flights had to be canceled. the company says that it is going to be trimming its schedule by 1% through mid-july. happening today, amazon is kicking off its annual shopping holiday. the company is promising deep discounts on 2 million products for prime day. since amazon started offering the online sale to its prime subscribers, it generated buzz and billions of dollars with limited time deals in some of its most popular products. with growth came competition and criticism.

temperatures going from 58 degrees to the upper 60s, making plans to have lunch outside. it's going to be great for that. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen as we look at our south bay highs today. pretty good with some low to mid 80s today. concord reaching 84, 72 oakland, and freemont looking at a high of 80 degrees this afternoon. near the coast we're keeping it cool with some upper 60s there and some low 80s for palo alto. san francisco reaching 67 downtown and our north bay temperatures reaching into anywhere from 78 degrees in napa to 90s in clearlake today. we are still looking at a wide range in temperatures and a lot more changes this week. at least for now we have an ocean breeze and our temperatures are coming down. by the end of the week high pressure will be returning and that means it's going to be heating up once again. so let me show you the trend for a spot like walnut creek. our inland east bay temperatures will be in the 70s and 80s

expected. bruce tried to get united and his credit card to remove the extra tickets but that did not get off the ground for months. bruce tried disputing his charges but got a letter from the credit card company saying the airline was responsible. he asked us for help. our consumer team spend almost a year on this case, finally in may united refunded bruce for the extra tickets and gave him an equal amount in a voucher, which means the grand total is $6,688.80 in cash and vouchers. we asked united for a statement but didn't hear back. it didn't work in bruce's case, remember you can dispute credit card charges when you have been overcharged. we just made a how to video showing what it takes and ways to win. you can watch it and all of our other how to episodes on our website, our streaming channels or our youtube page. just look for the how to play list. next, top stories we're

40 people were injured in a string of shootings there. you may be able to smell the smoke in the air if you open your windows this morning from a wildfire burning south of the bay area. "today in the bay" sharon katsuda is live. and this is another sign of fire season on the first day of summer. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. it's frustrating because you may want to open the windows at night to let the cool air come in, but then it's extremely smoky, so you have to close those windows. we've been through this before. you can see the cause in this video, lots of smoke billowing from the willow fire that's been burning in big sur since last week and scorched close to 2500 acres since it started thursday night and burning in the ventano wilderness and hot springs. several small areas have been evacuated. firefighters are facing many challenges because the land is so steep and are considering

flying in ground fire crews. one bit of advice from firefighters, please avoid using drones in fire areas and avoid using any fireworks. >> the fuel is ready to burn. the slightest ember from the fireworks can trigger it and we're off to the races. >> reporter: when we have smoke in the air from wildfires the cdc says keep your windows closed and the smoke ot of your house. try to replace your air filters so you're recirculating clean air in your home and try to avoid vacuuming during the time which kicks up particles in your home and be careful, smoke will cause eyes to become irritated and people with chronic heart or lung conditions should limit exposure to the smoke. our meteorologist kari hall joins us to show us how later on this week, things might get a little bit better. kari? >> yeah. we are seeing changes here. we've had high pressure that causes the air to sink and keeps

the smoke near the ground. right now we do have low pressure and it's causing the smoke to rise up and move away from that area. as we look at the ground sensors, the green dots show us air quality is pretty good and that's what we've seen over the past couple days and near the area of the fire, we are seeing some more favorable weather conditions, meaning that temperatures are cooler. we have higher humidity. that could slow the spread of the fire along with the calm winds that we are seeing right now. but over the weekend we did see some of that smoke traveling into parts of the south bay. it's once again moving into the upper levels of the atmosphere so it's not yet choking us out at the ground level and we will see changes as we go through the week. we will watch that and our air quality and our temperatures. i'll have another update in a few minutes. what's going on for the morning commute? >> well, i'll take it over from here, kari. we're keeping an eye on the wildfire burning in shasta

county called the cow fire and it's burned more than 600 acres in the millville area of shasta county, 15 miles east of redding. all evacuation orders have been lifted and no homes have been damaged. moving you forward on the closures of the levi stadium mass vaccination site that happens this thursday and comes with nearly eight out of ten adults in the south bay now having received at least one dose. now levi became a vaccination site back in february. since then more than 350,000 doses have been administered there. here's the latest county by county vaccination rates entering the second week of the state's reopening. in marin it's nearly 90% of people over 12, one of the highest vaccination rates in the country. the rest of the bay area is in the 70 to 80% range except for solano county that sits at 65%. a follow-up on a recent ocean rescue of a bay area man trying to kayak to hawaii by

himself. after six days at sea cyril derreumaux's kayak malfunctioned and he had to call the coast guard to save him off the coast of santa cruz. the chronicle reports the rescue cost more than $40,000 and the coast guard tells the newspaper it will come in its national budget for search and rescue yao . making up for lost time, they wanted to make celebrations count this year. >> yeah. for more than a year apart for many, many parents got a chance to spend the day with their children in person. the daughter of one san jose man flew to surprise him in person. >> i'm smiling, i'm happy. >> being able to see my dad is just awesome and then last year being at home was -- it was kind of miserable. i wasn't able to see my family. i was homesick. >> many people we spoke with have found a new appreciation for holidays after the pandemic put a damper on get-together.

that's so true. >> it is. and the weather played a nice role yesterday for father's day. i was out and about. i saw a lot of dads with family members. the weather was saying, you're welcome, fathers. >> yeah. that was great. over the weekend, it was nice and warm in some spots and that's the kind of weather we'll see today. as you're getting ready to head out for work this morning, starts out cool and we'll see the temperatures heading back into the low 80s. let's check out freemont, 59 degrees in the next hour, a few clouds to start and then sunshine again today. as we look at our microclimates and where we're headed for today we're anywhere from the low 60s near the coast to 90 in clear change and the east bay to the south county. we'll talk more coming up in a few minutes. mike, any problems for the commute? >> we've had a few updates here. first of all the san mateo bridge westbound as your commute

direction, eastbound coming toward us, watch, there was a break in the traffic and then traffic started reinstated. look at the map, east bay where there was a stall reported, someone was pushing their car along the flat section. i did not see any disturbance on the sensors but there may be residuals slowing. i'll follow that closely. right now your main commutes look just fine. this issue north bay 101 typical slowing there and on 280 a crash around 87 but more detail on that. disabled vehicle near the maze for folks heading into berkeley out of the westbound 580 direction. look at this, slowing now toward 101 off of the skyway. still westbound 80 may be an issue if it doesn't clear in the next couple seconds. that might mean the metering lights turn on early. i'll update you coming up. back to you. need to know or respecting privacy. the county's not exactly following one new rule meant to inform people about workplace

she traveled to russia to study law and feared she may be getting abducted. the russian man appeared in court and according to his attorney admitted to killing her. investigators are trying to determine if a man and a woman charged in the road rage death of a southern california boy are tied to other recent road rage incidents. marcus eriz and nguyen lee are accused in the murder of aiden leos and he was being driven school by his mother. orange county prosecutors have set up a tip line for anyone with information involving similar incidents involving the pair. lee is charged with accessory after the fact. both pleaded not guilty. new this morning, a bay area news group report suggests some counties are falling short in a law meant to publicize workplace covid outbreaks. the law took effect in late 2020 and reporters asked all 58 counties for specific information on workplace

outbreaks. in the bay area the four counties in the green, san mateo, ma republican, solano and contra costa provided limited but detailed information. the other five counties did not. 17 counties statewide flat out declined. some counties cited language of the new law for keeping them from releasing details. other counties cited privacy rights. a lot of people and businesses turned to go fund me to try to get through the pandemic, but one new study shows that ground fund asking not always pan out. according to new research in social science and medicine more than 175,000 covid-related go fund me campaigns were launched during the first seven months of the pandemic. 40% raised no money at all. and the top 1% earned one fourth of all the money raised. the ceo of go fund me said in the past his site wes never meant to be a source of support for basic needs.

32 days until the start of the summer olympic games and there are still some critical details to iron out. japan's minister in charge of the games announced limits on the number of fans allowed to attend. for all sports it will be set at 50% of venue capacity, with a maximum of 10,000 people. most of them will be from japan. also masks will be required and cheering will not be allowed. less than 10% of japan's population is now fully vaccinated. and the u.s. swim team now locked in for the summer olympic games. >> yesterday the final day of the trials in omaha, nebraska, olympic gold medalist and former cal bear nathan adrian was the sentimental favorite in the men's 50 meter free. he just missed out finishing third as caleb dressle beat everyone to the wall with a new american record. also winning his third event. dressle swims with a san francisco based club. michael andrews qualified in the second place. >> in the women's 50 meter

freestyle former stanford cardinal simone manual made up and punches his ticket by beating out former cal bear abby white zell who has made the olympic team. we are getting a better look at the olympic village where most of the athletes will stay during the time in tokyo. so there's the tower, shopping, food service, exercise and other facilities for roughly 11,000 people. those athletes will be tested for covid every day and they must wear masks at all times except when outdoors, sleeping, eating and competing. a reminder for you, you can watch the summer games exclusively right here on nbc bay area. start to finish, the opening ceremony happens just over one month from now. july 23rd. a major league success story for a san francisco giants pitcher making his first major league start. sammy long from sacramento.

his father was there at oracle on father's day to watch him face off against the phillies. the giants provided plenty of run support. that included back-to-back home runs in the firsting inning and long gave up two runs over six innings with stellar work by the defense. the giants ended up hammering the phillies 11-2. a special moment for him and his father. meanwhile, luck not exactly on the a's side in their final time in the bronx in their finale there. matt olson got off to a good start with his 20th home run of the season in the first inning but their one lead did not last. the yankees were leading 2-1 with no one out and the a's threatening. that's when sean murphy hit into the game-ending triple play making this the first time the yankees have ever had three triple plays in one season. >> wow. it really probably will feel like some baseball weather, nice, warm, summer-like temperatures coming up.

meteorologist kari hall is here to give us a preview of what we can expect this week the first week of summer. >> yes. it's going to go down and then back up. i guess it's typical of our summer time in the bay area. we're still on this roller coaster ride. in dublin, we can see a few clouds in the distance and that's what's going to help keep the temperatures a little bit cooler and keep it from rising so quickly today. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen as you check out your microclimate, let's start with today's highs in the south bay, reaching 85 in los gatos and in morgan hill, 81 in milpitas today. for the east bay we'll see temperatures ranging from the low 70s in oakland to the mid 80s in pleasanton, and 85 in antioch today. for the north bay, parts of the peninsula we are going to see wide ranging temperatures from 62 in half moon bay to 82 in redwood city, san francisco reaching into the low 60s for today for some spots but

downtown will be in the upper 60s. for our north bay highs our highs reaching up to 81 in sonoma, while clearlake will top out at 90 few areas. overall we're looking at cooling trend thanks to a stronger ocean breeze and as of right now it does stay fairly quiet and a good weather pattern. we'll start to see high pressure building once again. going to change our wind direction, instead of wind from the west, the winds coming around the high pressure will force our winds off the coast and that means it's going to be hot. we're not going to get our natural air conditioning with that cool ocean air coming in. that happens by the end of the weekend. let me show you the trend here in a spot like napa, we're going to have some mild weather today, tomorrow, basically throughout much of the week. not too bad. but then look at the trend as we start to go upstairs for the weekend. taking a look at these bars going from 92 on saturday to 102 degrees on sunday.

make sure you're planning ahead for this heat and those outdoor activities. may need to be changed in some spots as we're going to have that dangerous heat returning. our inland temperatures in the 80s for much of the week but then 90s for the weekend. once again a few spots could reach over 100 degrees while san francisco keeps it fairly mild here with 70s for the weekend. mike, what's going on right now as the commute starts to build? >> kari, your tough news for the weekend, next weekend, mine is for right now over the last few minutes, we've seen a bay bridge fill in all lanes, they turned them on early. this is a big unexpected backup. the issue the crash i told you off of 101 off the bottom of the skyway near octavia. blocks one lane. near the ninth street off ramp just past it. there may be a another crash in the back that forms quickly coming down the decline around harrison. in san francisco, as you make landfall, two crashes trying to

clear. the first one involves a broken axle. they have to get a flat bed tow truck to clear the jeep. approaching treasure island, before, then the one we showed you at the bay bridge toll plaza has the toll plaza filled in that will be an issue that may have more folks heading up to the richmond bridge over towards san raphael but down to the golden gate bridge. some folks may head south down toward the san mateo bridge if you're in oakland or hayward that will probably be your avenue. smooth westbound and the east bay disabled vehicle looked like it cleared without any slowing for 92. anywhere south of 92 in fact including 92 is moving smoothly. that little first slowing we saw for san jose right on schedule, did start to clear up as is a typical schedule there. crash on 280 not an issue as far as the traffic flow toward downtown. east shore freeway will start to build up as the backup forms, we'll see more traffic it's going at speed right now from

cdc. hundreds of passengers including royal caribbean employees are participating after a federal judge cited with florida in its lawsuit challenging the order that shuts down the cruise industry for more than a year due to the pandemic. california is joining new york in offering digital covid vaccination cards through the department of pluck health. the records can be used to gain access to businesses or events that require proof of full vaccination however some people reported issues trying to gain access to their records digitally. like with any new program you should be patient. california's health department recommends residents hold on to the paper card as well. many doctors in the state support the idea. >> the state is handling it in a sensitive way, making it accessible to an online site to go to get information to get your proof of vaccination. >> companies like walgreens and walmart offer covid records online if that's where you received your vaccine.

texas is the latest battle ground in a fight over voting restrictions. democratic congressman beto o'rourke held a rally in austin. greg abbott promised to call a special session to focus on election integrity. this comes after texas democrats walked out on a polarizing senate vote. republicans say the bill would have protected elections, but many democrats like o'rourke disagreed saying it would stop legal voters from cathing a ballot. nationwide at least 253 bills to restrict voting access has been introduced in 43 states. in texas governor greg abbott is au authorizing a $250 million down payment border wall with mexico and is continuing the work of the trump administration. however it's not clear whether abbott has the authority to do so or how much that final project will cost if completed. according to a reporter there at the texas tribune, it remains
