summer. meteorologist kari hall is tracking when temperatures will heat back up again. the third hour of "today in the bay" continues now. good monday morning. thanks for making us part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm cierra johnson. laura garcia is off this morning. we begin with breaking news out of richard, police investigating the deadly overnight shooting at a party. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside police headquarters. i know you got new information on the number of victims. >> correct. we know that eight people were shot at this late night father's day celebration here in richmond. of those eight three people have died. five others were taken to the hospital. three of those were treated and released. another one is in fair condition. a fifth person who was shot is in critical condition. again, three people shot and killed. this happened around 11:00 last night at avenue. it's not far from the rom 23rd n

richmond. this is known as a guatemalan marimba, celebration with music and dancing and in this instance they were celebrating father's day. this is according to someone at the scene. we know that the police right now, they are interviewing witnesses including family members and sounds like there were a lot of people from the same family at the event. we do not know yet what led up to the shooting and police told us they have not yet made any arrests. eight people shot, three have died. reporting live here outside the richmond police department, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'll continue to follow that. thank you. this morning, the investigation continues after a shooting steps away from a weekend celebration at oakland's lake merritt. one person died, six others arr people who they say were armed with guns after the gunfire. it's not clear if they're linked. the man that died has not been

"today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington with a look at some of the top priorities this week. tracie? >> this week in washington you will hear a lot about voting rights, infrastructure, foreign policy, the president dealing with cyber security security and trying to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of a different country. >> reporter: today, washington is mulling over president biden's meeting with vladimir putin. not only about warding off more cyber attacks but whether he and the russian leader can stabilize a buildup of nuclear weapons. >> the russians have got a lot

of new novel weapons that can sort of hit us in all kinds of unfortunate ways. the russians themselves are extraordinarily concerned about some of our long-range precision strike conventional weapons and we have to find a way of talking about them. >> reporter: a new president in iran offers hope that president biden can reinstate a nuclear deal there. iran is motivated, hoping to end sanctions. >> our paramount priority is to prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. we believe diplomacy is the best way to achieve that, rather than military conflict. >> reporter: back home, congress is considering a trillion dollar infrastructure compromise. more money for roads and brings, none for internet, housing and child care. questions about how to pay for it. >> some of the speculation is raising a gas tax, which i don't support. >> the gas tax hasn't been adjusted for inflation, the federal gas tax, since the 1990s. i would be willing to do that.

tracie potts, nbc news. happening today, vice president kamala harris will travel to pittsburgh, pennsylvania, joined by u.s. labor secretary marty walsh. they are scheduled to attend a labor roundtable as well as an event on the child tax credit. this will be harris' first visit to western pennsylvania. new overnight, severe weather takes aim at the midwest on your left there an apparent tornado caused widespread damage in parts of iowa. several buildings were damaged but no one was hurt. on your right at least 12 homes damaged after a tornado touched down in a suburb outside of chicago. five people were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries. this morning hundreds are still without power. happening now, tropical depression claudette is destructive path leaving at least 13 dead in t pushes towards the l flooding.

this is along the gulf coast. strong winds damaging some of those homes there. take a look at that. those deaths include eight children from a youth home whose van they were in crashed in a head-on collision and burst into flames. here's a live look at myrtle beach, south carolina. it's a beach day right now, but all of that is expected to change as that storm heads that way. certainly a destructive storm that we're dealing with, kari. how are things looking now? >> yeah. i think they can stay on the beach in south carolina because it's moving off the coast and it kind of missed that area as it moved through north carolina. right now, as we see, the storm continuing to move away. the weather conditions will be improving as it moves back out over open water and stays over open water over the next few days. we'll be watching that. bring you home as the sun is rising right now with a live look outside in san jose. it's a beautiful start to our

first full day of summer. temperatures in the upper 50s. it's going to slowly warm up today. it's going to be very much like it was yesterday as our highs reach into the low 80s here. some mid 80s for morgan hill as well as heading over toward antioch, north bay temperatures in santa rosa reaching 82 degrees. we'll see some 60s in san francisco and near the coastline. we'll talk about our wide range in temperatures and then much more of a cool down in just a few minutes. mike, anything happening right now for the morning commute? >> no changes which is not good. the bay bridge itself, that's the problem right now. the backup at the toll plaza got thrown in here big time just before 6:00, so that's about 15, 20 minutes earlier than we expect to see this beginning of summer. look at the map, issues two crashes. one west 80 shy of 101. around ninth. the other at harrison that involves a motorcycle. i think that should clear out because they're concerned they're causing more backups and

the two people involved said let's get off the freeway. the truck with the busted axle will take a while to clear from west 80. some of the approach to treasure island and the metering lights turned on trying to lessen the load getting into san francisco whic buildup on to the berkeley curve will form quickly and earlier more severe than we expected. again this time of season. this east bay 80 crash mild flowing at san pablo and heading up into the north bay. the north bay is clear and so is the rest of the commute. everything else outside of the bay bridge is looking standard for the summertime monday. that's great news across the bay. back to you. >> thanks, mike. now facing charges, still ahead, at 6:25, the reason police say they have no plans to arrest a man who drove into a group at a pride parade in florida. plus, travel trouble. the reason american airlines was forced to cancel hundreds of flights over the weekend. what is being done to address the problem and potential impact it may have on your next trip.

heading out for a run in the next hour or so, nice and cool with some upper 50s. you can see a warming up by late morning. and by noon we're still in the upper 70s headed toward the 80s today. not a bad day. we'll talk about what's ahead in our forecast coming up. >> live look at the san mateo bridge your alternate to the bay bridge. the taillights smoothly across 92 and i-80, westbound jammed into san francisco. two crashes as you decline into the city lanes. follow that progress, bart is also running without delay. new details in summer travel fever is apparently hitting american airlines especially hard. the airline canceling hundreds of flights over staffing shortages and maintenance issues. the carrier is struggling to keep up with the surge in travel demands. over the weekend, more than 300 flights had been canceled. the company will be trimming its schedule by 1% through mid july. happening today, amazon

his father was there at oracle on father's day to watch his son face off against the phillies. the giants provided plenty of run support. that included back-to-back home runs in the first inning. long gave up just two runs over six innings with some stellar work by the defense. the giants hammer the phillies 11-2. trending this morning a 6-year-old baseball fan who is going viral. >> yeah. since joey votto was ejected from saturday's game after arguing with the umps a young fan abigail was heartbroken and her mom tweeted photos of courtney crying during the game. votto found out about abigail and sent her a signed apology written on a baseball. i'm sorry. i didn't play the entire game. that is a keeper. sweet there. >> something to remember. >> yeah.e about sportsmanship would h been

good. >> at first i thought it said i was wrong. >> scratch that part out. >> tell you, kari is a team player and being a good sport and letting me go first with traffic. everything looks great on the map but this is the one big problem. the bay bridge has been an issue since we had the first crash which i believe still leaves a jeep with a busted axle in the middle of the westbound 80 direction past the ninth street off ramp. another crash near harrison. very tough to get crews out there. jammed solid from treasure island to san francisco. one option is bart which is running without delay as i understand it. we had the other issue eastbound 80 getting away from the area cleared through san pablo and you can get through the alternate as well. your other alternate the san mateo bridge. we have slowing down the east shore freeway in spite of the fact that the bay bridge is slow so that will head nor congestion

to berkeley. as we get a live look, i'm having trouble getting the words out but no problem getting across the san mateo bridge. another option to the westbound jam across the bay bridge. i will hand it off to you. >> that's all right, mike. it's monday. i totally get it. let's get a live look outside. this will help wake you up and get your day started right with that live view of san jose. beautiful sunrise on this first full day of summer. these days are pretty long. and so as the seven-day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen, come take a look at it. as you make plans for the week let's get a look at today's high temperatures. for the south bay we'll reach into the mid 80s, los gatos 85 degrees. we'll see a high of 81 in milpitas today and 80s even up to the upper 80s in a few spots. livermore 86, oakland today will see a high of 72 degrees. vallejo reaching 83. freemont looking at a high of 80 degrees. along the coast we're in the 60s again today. san mateo will top out at 75.

really nice there. and some 60s in san francisco. while our north bay temperatures will be warmer reaching 78 degrees in napa, but up to 90s in clearlake today. as we go through the week our weather stays nice and quiet. we have an ocean breeze. it's going to keep our temperatures regulated. then as we go toward the end of the week, high pressure builds and that causes a shift in our wind direction going from coming off of the ocean to a northerly wind and blowing it off the coast and that's going to give us that hot and dry weather that we'll see by the end of the weekend. let me show you the temperature trend in a spot like livermore. very nice, comfortable start to the week. we have some 80s. and then even getting cooler by the middle of the week. then take a look at the weekend. we're going back upstairs. looking at the trend here, 92 degrees on saturday, and 99 degrees on sunday. so that heat will be back. we'll see that across a lot of our inland valleys with our

temperatures going from the low 80s to mid 90s by the end of the weekend. wouldn't be surprised if we saw highs over 100 degrees while san francisco keeps it mild with highs this weekend in the mid 70s. all right. this is a really exciting morning. we've got vianey joining us. you have a very fun assignment at a beautiful location. tell us what's happening this morning. >> reporter: i really do, kari. how is this for a backdrop? the iconic golden gate bridge and this morning coming up on the "today" show i'll be joining al roker as he attempts to break a record for the longest online weather relay and he will join meteorologists across all stations to bring you forecasts hopefully from here, because he's going to be hopping to a lot of different locations, but stadiums, gardens, all over the nation, and it's going to be really exciting because we get a chance to show off our microclimate. it is windy and this is typical

6:22 this morning. authorities are calling a deadly crash at a pride parade in south florida a tragic accident. this happened saturday near fort lauderdale as the festival and parade was starting. investigators say the 77-year-old tri-valley stepped on the accelerator by mistake hitting two victims before crashing into a fence. one man died and another was injured. the victim and the driver were members of the fort lauderdale gay men he's chorus. the body of a fourth person involved in a floating inner tube stent has been found. the group went over a dam last thursday. the latest body recovered was that of a 7-year-old boy. the bodies of three others were found the day it happened. four others were rescued. one person is still missing. several people hurt in two hot air balloon incidents in colorado. that balloon crash landed in a

state park. this is due to strong winds. three people were taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay. three others were checked out at the scene. according to colorado parks and wildlife spokesman a second air balloon made a hard landing and one person in that basket had minor injuries. as we've been saying all morning it is the first full day of summer and if you're thinking about buying a trampoline for your backyard you may want to listen up. it can be fun but there are important safety concerns you need to know about. nbc news investigates consumer correspondent vicky nguyen speaks with one doctor about the injury risk. >> those are the injuries that happened with the head and neck. those are the injuries that happened with the failed somersaults and flips. the softness of the mat is misleading. you generate more force when you land on the mat because the mat is coming up to meet you than if you were on regular ground. >> coming up on "today" one family shares their story and

how their daughter is recovering and the safety tips you need to know before your kids jump for joy this a peninsula family's lengthy ordeal with one airline. >> they were charged for seats they didn't book so they turned to consumer investigator chris chmura and his team to straighten things out. >> good morning. bruce in millbrae booked a family trip to new york on united airlines in january 2020. he booked three tickets but was charged for six for a total of $3,344.40 more than he expected. bruce tried to get united and his credit card to remove the extra tickets but that did not get off the ground for months. bruce tried disputing his charges but got a letter from the credit card company saying the airline was responsible. he asked us for help. our consumer team spend almost a

are you smelling it? smoke from the big sur wildfire how it's affecting air quality here at home. >> back in business from coast to coast, more people are heading out to eat and even attending concerts, as those video restrictions ease. already still growing concerns about a new covid variant. the possible surge being predicted amidst of looming concern against president biden. "today in the bay" continues now. >> good morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm cierra johnson in for laura garcia this morning. we want to begin with that breaking news in richmond. deadly gunfire at a party. family members in shock. >> we want to go out to "today in the bay's" bob redell live there at the city's police department with the latest on what we know. bob? >> good morning. richmond police have given us a little bit more information on who was shot. we know eight people were shot, they were all men ranging in ages from 18 to 44. this happened at a home around 11:00 last night on the 2100

block of dunn avenue. not far from the intersection with 23rd street here in richmond. so again, of the eight people who were shot, three have died, one is in critical condition, another in fair condition, the other three were treated and released from the hospital. we know this was part of a guat mallen marin ba. there was a lot of music and dance and this was a celebration for father's day. police tell us there have been no arrests as of yet and we don't know what led up to this, why this happened. we are expecting to get more information from richmond police a little bit later this morning. reporting live in richmond, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right. thank you. meanwhile, oakland police are investigating a deadly shooting near a weekend celebration at lake merritt. one person we know has died, six others injured. officers did not -- did arrest two men they say they were armed who ran from the scene right after that shooting, but it's not clear if they're linked.

witnesses describe that chaos. >> what was amazing was and the surge of people running for safety. >> the man killed has not been identified. this is being called the sixth mass shooting in oakland since the start of 2021. the most of any city in california. a number of cities experienced gun violence over the weekend. in louisiana a shooting after a concert in baton rouge. in dallas two children were among the eight people shot at a party early yesterday and five people were injured in shootings in colorado springs. in chicago five people died and more than 40 injured in a string of shootings there. happening now, you may be able to smell or even see smoke in the air. this is if your windows were open this morning from the wildfire that's burning south of the bay area. we have team coverage for you this morning. first, "today in the bay's"

sharon katsuda is live at the golden gate bridge and this is another sign of fire season on the first day of summer. >> that's right, marcus. you know, it's pretty windy out here right now so you can't really smell the smoke, but over the weekend i definitely did in the east bay and when you open up the windows you can smell the smoke. you can see the cause in the video. lots of smoke billowing from the willow fire burning in big sur since last week and scorched close to 2500 acres and started thursday night. it's burning in the ventano wilderness in hot springs. several small areas have been evacuated. firefighters are facing many challenges because the land there is so steep and are considering flying in ground fire crews. one bit of advice from firefighters please avoid using drones in fire areas and avoid using any fireworks. >> the fuel is ready to burn.

the slightest ember from the fireworks can trigger it and we're off to the races. >> when we have smoke in the air from wildfires the cdc says keep your windows closed and the smoke out of your house and replace your air filter so you're recirculating clean air in your home and avoid vacuuming during this time which kicks up particles in your home and be careful smoke will cause eyes to become irritated and people with chronic heart or lung conditions should try to limit exposure to the smoke. those are good tips as we enter fire season and kari hall is here to show us how later this week the conditions might improve. back to you. >> yeah. sharon, right now we are seeing the southerly winds picking up bringing some of the smoke into parts of the east bay. most of us have had a good start this morning. these little dots show air quality sensors and we are seeing moderate air quality in parts of the tri-valley. as we get a closer look of where the fire is happening we're seeing more favorable weather

conditions. hopefully they will continue to get more containment. 50 degrees and humidity levels very high with a calm wind as we go into today, there's the possibility that more of that smoke will be coming from the willow fire into the bay area moving from a south toction. we'll continue to monitor that for today. marcus? >> carrie, we're keeping an eye on the wildfire burning in shasta county being called the cow fire and burned more than 600 acres in the millville area of shasta county. good news here for you this morning, all evacuation orders have been lifted and no homes damaged and the fire is 15% contained. turning to the pandemic, the white house is ramping up efforts to meet president biden's vaccination goal. he with two weeks to go does not look like the goal will be met. 42% of americans are fully vaccinated. in california 72% of the

people have rolled up their sleeves. in the bay area many went out with no restrictions. in new york the first concert held in madison square garden since the pandemic. all of this comes as concerns over the delta covid variant continue and states begin shutting down some vaccine sites. >> here's stephanie gosk with more. >> reporter: good morning to you guys. you know, it was a big night here at madison square garden on sunday night, the foo fighters were live. the first live concert at msg since the pandemic began. there was a catch however. not only did you have to have a ticket, you also had to have a vaccine to get in. first fully vaccinated concert here in new york city. a sign that this city is coming back to life. one of many signs we're seeing across the country. there are still these concerns and those concerns revolve around those people who remain unvaccinated and this delta variant, it is deadly, it is

dangerous and it is spreading. there are places where we're seeing case numbers go up, although overall, across the nation case numbers continue to go down. there are these pictures in missouri case numbers are up, 59%, predominantly the delta variant. a county in florida where two people died and a number got sick and had to close down administrative offices in that county. back to you in the bay area. moving you forward on the upcoming closures of the levi's stadium mass vaccination site happens thursday with nearly eight out of ten adults in the south bay having received at least one dose. levi became a vaccination site in february. more than 350,000 doses have been administered there. now to a live look outside towards san francisco. you know what finally after several days of hot bay area weather, things are starting to cool off. bit hazy in the city as we look upon that.

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that and kari, i have a question for you this morning, but i saw your forecast a little bit earlier so i'm like, but how long is this going to last? >> well, we're going to see a few more days of the marine layer near the coast in san francisco keeping it cool and helping us out for our inland east bay spots like pleasant hill heading out the door, a few clouds in the distance, temperatures here in the upper 50s and a slow warmup today. it's still going to be fairly comfortable as we head toward noon. high temperatures reached the mid 80s. you can see the range in temperatures from 62 in half moon bay to 90 in clearlake. parts of the south bay in low to mid 80s. we'll talk about the changes ahead in a few minutes. any problems for the commute? >> folks are moving better at the bay bridge but not here at the toll plaza. not yet. look at thep map where we have a crash in san francisco that did clear. one over at ninth and the one at

harrison and the backups looks like it's clear from the roadways. we've had the last ten minutes show really good improvement for those speeds from treasure island into san francisco. but because of the metering lights were on and slowed down because of the issue on the span earlier issues two crashes, they have the backup coming down the east shore freeway off of the maze. look at 580 and northbound 880. more slowing through berkeley and off of the maze again as we said. that may have resulted in a burst of traffic across the san mateo bridge. everything is smooth right now, mild slowing through san leandro. scanned the reports and let you know if there's issues over there and a smooth flow of traffic down the rest of the bay and an easy drive to the rest of the bay. the drive times from contra costa, slowing, it just kicked in for highway 4, an earlier crash in pittsburg which looks like it cleared. back over to you. >> all right.

take the first steps in getting light rail trains running again soon. the board approved two emergency measures that would allow them to spend up to $2 million to start repairing the rail yard. vta surveillance camera video we showed you last week showed some of the massive police response to the rampage by a worker killed nine coworkers last month. our investigative team was able to obtain dispatch tape from workers calling in the shooting as it was happening. take a listen. >> we have shots fired. make sure your doors are closed. >> hi, communications. >> michelle, we have shots fired in building b at guadeloupe, i'm sorry, in san pedro. okay. how many? what happened? >> that's all we have right now is building b, shots were fired. >> someone is shooting outside the door upstairs.

>> hi. more ib to? >> active shooter upstairs third floor building a. >> third floor. building a. >> absolutely. >> okay. >> bye. >> a second bank of surveillance cameras shows inside the two buildings where the shootings happened. most of those rooms were empty as far as we can tell. the cameras do not show the gunman entering or leaving. investigators are trying to determine if a man and woman charged in the road rage death of a southern california boy are tied to other incidents. marcus eriz and wynne lee are accused in the murder of aiden leos and he was being driven to school by his mother orange county prosecutors have set up a tip line for other similar incidents involving the pair. eriz faces a murder charge, lee charged with accessory after the fact. both have pleaded not guilty.

new this morning, a bay area news group report suggests sh counties are falling short in the law meant to publicize covid outbreaks. the law took effect in late 2020. reporters asked all 58 counties for specific information on workplace outbreaks. four in the green, san mateo, marin, solano and contra costa provided limited but detailed information the other five counties did not. 17 counties statewide flat out declined. some cited the language of the new law for keeping them from actually releasing those details. other counties cited privacy rights. a lot of people and businesses turning to go fund me to try to get through the pandemic, but one new study shows he that crowd funding did not always pan out. according to new research and social science and medicine, more than 175,000 covid related campaigns were launched during the first seven months of the

pandemic. 40% raised no money at all. the top 1% earned one fourth of all the money raised. the ceo of go fund me said in the past the site has never really been meant to be a source of basic needs. 32 days until the start of the summer olympic games in tokyo and there are critical details to iron out. within the last few hours japan's minister in charge of the games announced limits on the number of fans allowed to attend. so for all sports it will be set at 50% of venue capacity with a maximum of 10,000 people and most will be from japan. also masks will be required and cheering will not be allowed. less than 10% of japan's population is now fully vaccinated. getting a look at the olympic village where most athletes will stay during the tokyo games during their time there. it consists of apartment towers, shopping food service, exercise, and other facilities for roughly 11,000 people. covid every day

afternoon. 85 degrees in morgan hill, 86 in east san jose, warm in a few mi 80s from walnut creek to pleasanton to martinez and 75 in hayward. near the coast where we keep it cool with low 60s. head over to redwood city we're in the low 80s today. san francisco, staying in the 60s today and our north bay temperatures will be in the anywhere from the 70s to 90 degrees. we'll see that in clearlake today. hotter spots and we'll keep the ocean breeze picking up for the middle of the week giving us our natural air conditioning. as we head toward the end of the week, it's going to start to heat up as high pressure builds going to change our wind direction from a ocean breeze to a land breeze and that's going to cause our temperatures to go from the 70s and 80s in walnut creek to 92 on saturday and 98 degrees on sunday. so as you make weekend plans it's monday, but plan on it

we're following. we begin with breaking news in richmond and deadly gun fire at a late night celebration. >> bob redell is live outside of police headquarters. what are police telling you this morning? >> we know that eight men between the ages of 18 and 44 were shot at a late night father's day celebration here in richmond. this happened at a home at the 2100 block of dunn avenue not far from the intersection with 23rd street. police tell us that three of those men were shot have died. five others taken to the hospital. one in critical condition. another in fair condition. three others treated and released. a person on the scene tells us this was a celebration guat mallen marin ba where they had dancing and music in celebration of father's day. it not know what led up to this shooting and why this happened. richmond police tell us they have not made any arrests and hope to get more information from them and we'll have that

for you during our midday newscast at 11:00 a.m. live outside the richmond police department, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. this morning the investigation continues after a shooting steps away from a weekend celebration at oakland's lake merritt. one person died, six others were injured. oakland police officers did arrest two people they say were armed with guns who ran from the scene right after the gunfire, but right now still unclear if they're linked. the man who died has not yet been identified. a new look at the white house this morning where president biden is back from a weekend at his delaware home. he is facing a growing list of issues to deal with here as well as overseas. a new president in iran offers new hope for restoring a nuclear deal that led to a lengthy sanction. the white house may be ready to take a new push. meanwhile, vice president kamala harris is traveling to pittsburgh, pennsylvania. she is scheduled to attend a labor roundtable as well as an event on the child tax credit.

if you're opening the windows this morning to let that cool air in, you may start smelling or even seeing the smoke. this is why that may be. lots of smoke billowing from the willow fire burning in big sur since last week. it's burned nearly 2500 acres since thursday night in the wilderness. there are some evacuation orders and firefighters say it's burning in some steep terrain. of course, some of that in parts of the bay area. meteorologist kari hall has a look at the weather too. shaping up to be a nice day today. >> it will be. we're going to see more of the same weather we had from over the weekend with our inland spots reaching into the mid 80s today. cooling down a few degrees as we head toward midweek but this weekend it's going to be hot once again with our valley temperatures reaching back towards low to mid 90s. mike, any problems for the commute? >> there is an issue for the east shore freeway. we've gone to 44 minutes as far as the travel time from highway
