today in the pacific northwest as well as texas and even upstate new york >> al is standing by with the forecast, but first let's get to cathy who is checking out the damage from claudette. it's been some tough times there. good morning >> reporter: good morning to you. tornados are being blamed for extensive damage stretching from the midwest to the southeast here in alabama, i'm standing in what used to be a mobile home community now left in pieces and you might notice this large mound of debris behind me. we are told that a home literally flew into another. overnight, a likely tornado ripping through the chicago suburbs. with records of power outages, downed trees and extensive damage, including flooding at o'hare airport the severe storm system also hitting indiana. down south, another path of destruction left behind by tropical depression claudette. at least 12 people, including 10 children, killed

the storm triggering treacherous conditions in southern alabama where authorities say a hydro planing car likely set off a chain reaction on the interstate children were traveling in a small bus operated by the alabama sheriff's youth ranch when it got caught in the pileup only the ranch director, kwhosms driving, survived. she lost two of her own children in the crash the multi car crash also killing cody fox and his 9-month-old daughter arianna who were in a separate vehicle >> i've never seen anything like it it was horrific. >> reporter: the storm spurred tornados, too, one touching down in brewton, alabama, flattening homes, ripping roofs and tossing debris for miles >> all of a sudden, the trees over this way behind the houses over there, they just kind of just -- it was like they imploded >> reporter: high winds and life threatening flooding also leading to rescues dolphin island's mayor saying they're still feeling the effects from past storms

>> we're at a situation that the shoreline is just so decimated at this point that it just takes very little. again, high tides, wave action, to push water into the interior of the island. >> the lashing in louisiana washing out streets and pushing water into homes >> we had about 4 inches throughout our entire house. and that happened within about an hour. >> along the florida panhandle, strong winds and flashfloods bringing rough seas and high surf, while fire crews in georgia rescued a woman trapped inside her car, freeing her from a fallen tree and power lines. and claudette is still packing a punch right now in the carolinas. meanwhile, back here in east brewton, we have learned several people were injured after the storm came through, but one woma sucked out of her home savannah >> terrifying. thank you, kathy park, thank

you. >> al is standing by in long bridge, new jersey, on the road for rokerthon. al, good morning >> hey, good morning, guys this just really brings home the fact that you don't need a really strong storm to cause big problems this thing is now reintensified into a tropical storm 65 miles east-southeast of raleigh. 40-mile-per-hour winds moving east-northeast at 25 miles per hour moving offshore quickly. it should not be a problem over the next hour or so and then west, more severe it's out to sea and no problem we are watching back to our west, no severe weather pushing in here. we have severe thunderstorm watches up stretching from northeastern ohio, parts of r upstate new york this system is going to be spawning severe weather today for 26 million people. we have the threat of some tornados, hail, and damaging winds. our risk continues tomorrow for the midatlantic into the southeast for more damaging winds, hail, tornado threat low,

but a lot of heavy rain. this is going to be a prodigious rainmaker with hourly rates through tuesday with up to 2 inches per hour in the gulf coast, mid-atlantic states and up into the ohio river valley, guys so our severe weather from claudette is just about over, but we are going to be looking at severe weather coming with these storms over the next 24 hours. back to you guys >> al, thank you we will get the rest of your forecast and we'll talk about the start of roker-thon. i see you have your roker-thon shirt on we'll get to that in a few but right now, turning to those problems that forced american airlines to cancel hundreds of flights over the weekend and there are even more cuts planned for today tom costello covers aviation for us he's at reagan national. this is happening at the very moment we're seeing this travel resurgence what went wrong? >> reporter: yeah. that's exactly what happened essentially, nobody expected we would see this surge in passengers coming back to airports and airlines

immediately after the pandemic and airlines had furloughed employees, they laid people off, and now they are really trying to catch up and they're behind it had to cancel more than 400 flights over the weekend and american says it is projecting it will have to cancel 50 flights per day through mid-july, and that is more than 1,000 in total we're talking about 1% of american's flights the cancellations are coming from staffing shortages and maintenance issues this weekend's bad weather to ba certainly didn't help at all the factor led us to build an additional resilience and certainty to our operation by adjusting a fraction of our schedule flying. that means essentially canceling flights. it says we made targeted changes with the goal of impacting the fewest number of customers it is now rushing to get pilots and other crew members

furloughed during the pandemic back on staff and getting them ready to fly as fast as possible but the bottom line he season >> we're talking about continued cancellations through mid-july according to american airlines is this just an american airlines problem or other airlines potentially facing these same issues? >> american seems to be hit the hardest. united airlines not as hard. the bottom line is, if you have booked a flight this summer, there is a chance you may get rebooked they may put you on an earlier flight, a later flight, they may put you through a different hub, they say they're going to do everything they can to cancel the fewest number of flights altogether if your flight is completely canceled, you'll get a full refund >> tom, thank you very much. meantime, new york reached an important milestone in its long journey back overnight, but the national goal of getting 70% of americans vaccinated by the fourth of july appears to fall short, and the spread of the delta variant shows no sign of

turned tragic at the start of a pride parade in florida. a driver slamming into the crowd killing one person and hurting another. nbc's sam brock is in wilton manors near ft. lauderdale with more on that investigation sam, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. the truck was the lead car of the stonewall pride parade here. it ended up at the garden center the driver is a 77-year-old man, a member of the gay men's chorus here in south florida, and that he accelerated unexpectedly with tragic consequences. this morning, heartbreaking new details of how a festive day in south florida transformed instantly to confusion and grief when a white pickup truck seen here barreling into a garden center, first struck two men hospitalizing both, one of whom later died >> i saw bodies on the ground. it was a traumatizing experience all around >> reporter: video shows officer

placing this man in a cruiser. ft. lauderdale police confirming the driver involved is part of the gay men's chorus group and is a 77-year-old who had ailments preventing him from walking the duration of the parade and was selected to drive as the lead vehicle. police say as the truck began to move forward in anticipation for the start of the parade, the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly mere feet from where it happened, congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz. >> i don't know if i can get across how devastating it is to watch someone run down and lose their life in front of so many people who were there to celebrate. >> reporter: this picture shows her and fellow congressman ted deutsch embracing after watching the careening car fly by members of their staff, volunteers, interns, and kids. initially, it wasn't clear whether the act was intentional. although wilton manor's police chief later called it a tragic accident >> this does appear to be accidental does that provide you any relief

at all >> it provides me with some relief in the moment how tragic is it you would like your first thought to be oh, my god, what a horrible accident and that wasn't any of us response. >> reporter: ft. lauderdale police say the driver remained on scene and was cooperative the entire time. a dui test was conducted there were no signs of impairment and no arrest thus far as the investigation here in ft. lauderdale continues. craig, back to you >> sounds like just a tragic accident there, sam brock for us thank you. now to breaking news from tokyo this morning olympic organizers say they will allow some local fans to attend the games in person. each event will be limited to 50% capacity with a maximum of 10,000 fans for all olympic venues spectators from overseas will not be allowed to attend, and the decision contradicts the country's top medical adviser who recommended the games be held without any fans. the olympics get under way in tokyo july 23rd.

>> kerry sanders is at port miami with more on this. hey, kerry, good morning >> reporter: good morning. the royal caribbean cruise terminal here is empty, but there are some folks at sea, on a test the cdc likes to call it a simulated cruise they're trying to work out the covid protocols to make sure when paying passengers go on board very soon that everything is safe. this morning, the shutdown that has cost cruise lines billions of dollars is almost over. after 15 months, sunday it was anchors away for a royal caribbean simulation cruise. >> the cruise today is huge for the industry and for the company. >> reporter: this, the first cruise to leave any u.s. port with passengers since march 2020 the two-day trip will sail around the bahamas on board, company employees who volunteered to test the health and safety systems, all eager to jump start the industry.

>> i'm looking forward to getting back to sea. this is has been what we've been talking about for the last 15 months >> the maiden voyage a promising milestone after a choppy start eight crew members testing on is positive for covid-19 last week on its "odyssey of the seas," delaying the launch of the new cruise liner scheduled to sail with passengers ahead of the july 4th holiday that ship is recommending passengers to be fully vaccinated and asking them to provide documentation before sailing. unvaccinated passengers will be required to adhere to health protocols like wearing masks, eating in separate designated areas, and undergoing covid testing, some at their own expense. royal caribbean cruises says it plans to require all adult guests to be vaccinated on other ships scheduled to sail from ports and states outside florida this summer. it remains unclear this morning how a florida law enacted by

governor ron desantis will impact future cruises departing from the state passports and the law prevents any business, including cruise lines, from requiring vaccine passports and imposes a $5,000 fine for each violation. later this week, the cdc has authorized a celebrity seven-day cruise the ship "edge" with 95% of the passengers vaccinated will set sail from ft. lauderdale it will be the first cruise from an american port with paying passengers since the pandemic began. >> we have spent a lot of time as a company and as an industry thinking through a lot of what needs to be done and that gives me confidence >> reporter: a confidence about to be tested at sea. >> so it seems like the royal caribbean has taken a lot of safety precautions, kerry. are other ships expected to do the same >> reporter: not only other ships, but all cruise lines are taking their own version of safety protocols

have a talk show or be a part of a talk show or a magazine, honestly, until this point i think i'm the most well rounded with still a long way to go and a lot more to learn, but i'm so glad it's at this interval of my life, when i feel this -- the work is really paying off there's been so much soul searching. fun i never had a problem with joy and optimism, never had a problem with but something about being 46, i love talking about happiness because i now know that you really have to fight for it. you have to earn it. it is work but the reward is -- there's no alternative for me and i think i found happiness in different ways before and as you get older, that happiness is found in other ways. so i wrote the essay, the pursuit of happiness in there.

show you know, why is she so darn happy? like, you know -- and the "snl" sketch and it was also positive, but it was a confusing time and it wasn't an easy road and what i'm really glad about is that somehow we came out the other side and learned a lot in that year, as everyone said we would. you talk about finding yourself or gaining wisdom at a certain point in time. a show takes a lot of evolution and growth but to get that nomination, i'm so happy that my bosses feel good about the journey we went on i'm like, does this mean we can keep going it's just relief i'm so happy and it wasn't a smooth sail and it wasn't a confidence booster it was a lot of finding our way in a tough time and so i'm just so grateful that we didn't totally fail honestly
