overnight, more severe weather this t from northern tennessee to the canadian border. new video showing sunday's ef-3 tornado with winds up to 140 miles per hour tearing through neighborhoods west of chicago. >> you could hear the winds hitting the house, like a freight train hitting the house. the house was moving >> reporter: roofs ripped away, trees toppled onto houses and cars this home leveled with two people inside. >> our tactical rescue team went in and moved the debris out of the way to get those people to safety >> reporter: officials say the cleanup effort will take weeks complete strangers helping one another sift through debris, salvaging what they can. why would you come out here? >> just to help out. if this was my house, i wish the community would come together and help me. so just doing my part. >> this is what happened

ho wre still in the hospital. hoda, we're told that their condition is improving this morning. >> a little bit of good news there. all right. thank you, meagan. let's go over to al and find out what today has on tap for falling from houston across the gulf coast up into the northeast. we have flash flood watches up for 6 million people as we watch this develop and, in fact, we have a risk of severe weather stretching from norfolk down to the panhandle of florida, jacksonville, as well, damaging winds, a chance for strong hail and a low tornado risk part of the problem is claudette. it moved through and dumped a ton of moisture. so that gulf coast is especially sensitive to some additional rain as this front slices through that moisture, heavy downpours will be generated from the gulf coast into the mid-atlantic today. we have a flood risk around 1,400 miles, from houston down to southern new jersey, up to

1.5 inches of rain per hour falling on already saturated ground, making for scattered flash flooding possible. the heaviest rain stretching from the carolina coastline down into florida, into central florida. up to 2 inches of rain falling per hour, is so we'll be watching this very closely today for flash flooding hoda >> al, thanks. and the weather isn't the only source of travel troubles with more americans returning to the skies, the surge is overwhelming airports and airlines still grappling with staff short annals kerry sanders has more on this story in miami airport good morning >> reporter: good morning, hoda. remember when congress came to the rescue of airlines with billions of dollars because the airlines feared the pandemic would put them out of business forever? now, 15 months later, cooped up americans are returning to airports, like here at mia, and the airlines are discovering after the cutbacks, they cannot keep up. as travel takes off again,

airlines are scrambling to keep pace with the summer surge delta announcing plans to hire more than 1,000 pilots by next summer the airline predicting its domestic travel volume to return to pre-pandemic levels this month. >> people are ready to party we've been cooped up for a year. everyone is vaccinated so everyone is ready to hopefully get back to some type of normalcy >> reporter: that normalcy, though, is coming faster than many airlines anticipated, and after nearly a year spent drastically reducing costs american airlines facing a shortage of ground staff and flight crews is now racing t get furloughed pilots back up in the skies. >> pilots who might have been furloughed are going to take weeks to get back out there actually into the cockpit. they have to go through certification and training again and show that they're able to fly for the airline. >> reporter: the staffing crunch coupled with maintenance issues and bad weather at many big hubs across the country causing american to delay and cancel

hundreds of flights in recent days frustrating passengers like chinaya and thomas brock their flight home from vacation with their two young sons was delayed for 12 hours and eventually they were rebooked on separate flights >> with storms you can't control that, but there is no way, no how we should have been separated. >> reporter: and the cancellations are expected to continue 60 to 80 flights per day through at least mid-july. about 1% of american's total operations the airline saying, we mad targeted changes with the goal of impacting the fewest number of customers meanwhile, with increasing incidents of unruly and even violent behavior in flight, trade groups for the airlines and labor unions are asking the department of justice to crack down on passengers behaving badly, including the threat of federal criminal charges >> so, kerry, with this spike in travel demand, i'm wondering what is happening to ticket

prices are they going up, too >> reporter: yup, they are going up as a matter of fact, just in the last 30 days, prices have inched up 7%. that's on top of a 10% increase that was in april. so if you're planning on traveling, say, in the busy july/august, holiday season, and you haven't bought your tickets yet, you might want to buy them before the prices continue to go up but then, of course, hope the ticket you buy is not on a flight that then has to be canceled >> that was a downer there, kerry. thank you. now to another concern tie to the nation's reopening, cases of the more contagious and more deadly delta variant now detected in nearly every state and in large parts of the country, vaccination rates are lagging. nbc's national correspondent miguel almaguer has the latest on it. miguel, good morning >> reporter: good morning. health officials say the delta variant is covid's most serious threat it's believed to be behind increasing cases in several states and more young patients ending up in the icu experts say it will soon be the

nation's most dominant and dangerous strain with a return to pre-pandemi life now spreading from coast to coast, there is growing alarm about the more contagious and deadly delta variant for unvaccinated americans described as covid on steroids, the delta variant now accounts for 1 in 5 cases in the u.s., and research shows it is about twice as likely to leave patients hospitalized. while double dose vaccines have been shown to be effective against the variant, more than half the country is still not fully vaccinated >> where things are really bad right now, i really worry that this delta variant is going to get a lot of people sick >> reporter: experts call it a tale of two covid nations. in much of the northeast andcine higher, cases are falling. but in much of the south where vaccinations are at their lowest, cases are once again surging. in missouri, they're up 72%.

the delta variant found in wastewater there showing its vast community spread. but experts don't believe it's transmittable in that form in arkansas, where only a third of eligible people have been fully vaccinated, the number of covid patients in icus has more than doubled in the last few months the sickest people now in their 20s and 30s. >> now it's young, healthy individuals who are coming in, needing mechanical ventilation, needing heart/lung bypass to stay alive >> reporter: nationwide, less than 40% of young people are inoculated, compared to more than double that rate for seniors. perhaps most at risk, children under 12 who are still ineligible for the vaccine but across the country, there are still stories of hope. in kentucky, gary taylor was in treatment for covid-19 since september. now crediting his recovery to prayers and medical workers.

student athletes can receive sam brock joins us with more on that decision and what it all means. sam, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. we know the supreme court is idealogically divided and still, craig, came to a unanimous decision that the ncaa can't operate like a monopoly. it's worth noting here this particular lawsuit does not deal directly with student athlete pay, but the courts have all but invited more lawsuits to come and challenge congress to even the playing field. >> jones to the back corner. touchdown, alabama >> reporter: for college athletes, the biggest victory in recent memory may not have come on the gridiron. >> mcdonald steals it away. >> reporter: or on the hardwood, but in the nation's largest courts after a 9-0 decision, upholding a ruling that the ncaa can't block educational benefits to the young men and women competing between the lines. >> that is not an amateur

extra clicurricular activity. these athletes put their bodies on the line to generate this the least we can do for them is let the schools provide fair benefits and compensation. >> reporter: the attorney for former west virginia running back shawn alston whose name headlines the lawsuit described educational benefits as things like grad school scholarships, tutoring, computers, and paid internships. the sweeping decision swings the door wide open for sharing some of the billions the ncaa generates in revenues with players. jeremy lewis competed at the university of miami and played four years professionally in canada >> the tv is trying to make money. the coaches are making money the refs are making money. everybody is making money except the players. >> reporter: justice brett kavanaugh slammed the ncaa for thinking it is above anti-trust laws writing, the labels cannot disguise the reality the ncaa's business model would be flatly illegal in almost any other industry in america. ncaa president said the group

to go along with that extension. >> good morning. i'm cierra johnson in vallejo. the dry conditions a concern for firefighters after a fire started in a grassy noll between swanzy court and novone street here in vallejo around 9:00 last night. fire crews said the wind did play a factor with how quickly the fire spread. in all it damaged about ten homes and consumed about ten acres. no reports of injuries, but this morning firefighters urging folks to not use fireworks as we approach the fourth of july. certainly dry out there, but hopefully the temperatures will be mild. let's check in with kari. >> and we are seeing some mild temperatures thanks to the marine layer that's returned in san francisco seeing the fog as well as some mist and drizzle near the coastline. as we make our way inland it's clear and sunny and that's what we'll see with a wide range in temperatures. upper 70s for the inland valleys over the next couple days it's going to be nice and comfortable

and maybe join some aroma the dome -- dopamine, oxytocin and maybe join some aromatherapy bookend your day, setting your bedroom with the intention of getting good rest. most of us don't get good rest so those are the things we can do to set tensions for mindfulness. >> and don't look at your phone at the end, check out tweets the last thing before you close your eyes should be something that enriches you. now, a lot of people want to take care of themselves and i'm talking about self-care, maybe a massage or a walk or something but we say you know what we don't have time for that. there's too much else that has to happen today. >> hoda, we cannot not prioritize our self-care many of us are caregivers, especially in this pandemic. so we have to carve out time for ourselves. find those moments do yoga, journal, garden, do whatever it is that brings you joy. a lot of people like reading or cooking. we found some spaces and places where we can actually care for ourselves during this pandemic

cookbook >> oh, you know, this new cookbook is a little bit lighter than the ones i've had in the past, talking a lot about my journey to feeling better. i wasn't so well in my early 40s after working and having a child and i had chronic sinus infections and was always sick so i had to find a way to eat the things i love but, you know, reduce things like sugar and refined carbs and grains and gluten and dairy, you know, some of the regular culprits. so this book has a three-day reboot where you can clean all that stuff out for three days and slowly reintroduce stuff back in. so you get to eat all the things you like and still feel great. >> so what are we eating today >> we're going to make a raspberry vinaigrette. for a great salad for picnics, at home, as a side, or as a lunch. it's an escarole and olive salad. mustard and olive oil.

tablespoon of apple scider vinegar and fresh berries. so in the summer, i love to use fresh berries to make vinaigrettes because i think they look pretty and you blend it all up and it ends up looking like this. so avoid the loud noise for the next 20 seconds. >> drives the cats crazy >> exactly they're all over the place to keep them asleep. so i make a bunch and i keep them in these glass containers in the fridge so i can pull it out whenever i need it you can make it with blueberries, strawberries, and then what i do is top my salad >> does it keep long >> it keeps for a week and it's not just for salads i put it on chicken, i put it on fish so there's a lot of things you can use this dressing on if you want so then i use a little bit of roasted almond and then a little bit of gorgonzola. obviously if you're doing a three-day reboot, you want to remove and not add the gorgonzola otherwise, add it in there you can use some chopped olives. i like black and i like green

for that nice sort of rich flavor and then some more raspberries on top to make it colorful and then i take this great vinaigrette, and i think peopl don't think about making vinaigrettes from fresh berries. but in the summertime, it is perfect. and i don't know if you guys can see this, but look how beautiful that is. >> yum >> like a super food >> yeah, exactly super food salad and you can see that the color is so vibrant. it's one of the best ways for me to get my daughter to basically eat it there's some fennel in here because i love the crunch and fennel has a lot of newtutrienti it people see it at the store and it's a bulb, and people don't owe what to do with it so shave it or slice it thinly you can put it on a mandolin, if you want but you can take a knife and slice it just like this. and you can see that it kind of falls apart. it tastes like licorice,

actually licorice with no sugar in it and then toss that on top. besides adding escarole -- do you know what that is? >> yes but i never cook with it it's intimidating. z >> wash it like romaine, craig and you clean it up, chop it out and put it in your salad and i also add a little bib lettuce because it's nice and soft when you have a leafy green that has a lot of body to it that you have to chew can a little bit, it's nice to have something light and buttery to go with it. so i think texture is really important when you're making a salad so it doesn't feel like so much roughage. craig, if you don't want to use escarole, you can always use row romaine. >> oh, okay. >> how about the cookies >> everybody is always into the cookies. so they're chocolate chip quinoa. >> what? >> i know, i know. basically, the quinoa adds a bit of crunch to them.

so you toast the quinoa in a skillet until it gets ever so slightly golden brown. and i toss that in and am using no refined sugar, no refined flour. coconut flour, almond flour. add the quinoa in. chocolate chips, and use whatever kinds you like. i like dark chocolate, but you can use milk if you wanted and coconut sugar. you don't need anything fancy. mix it up. scoop it, chill it for like 30 minutes, throw it in the oven and this is what you get and they're nice and sthik thick >> looks like a quin-wow >> wow, from tues-yay to quin-wow >> wow, you guys >> a lot happening today >> quinoa cookie giada, thank you >> giada, thank you. >> by the way, not going anywhere, cooking up more delicious dishes in the third hour and you can always find those recipes at today.com/food. thank you, giada >> thank you
