las vegas. records are set to be shattered across the west. portland expected to reach 115 degrees with temperatures in sin city expected to hike up to 107. just two of many places seeing that extreme heat. >> that's keeping local utilities paying close attention. as of now state energy leaders say they don't expect to issue a flex alert, despite some of those extreme temperatures. cal iso and the state's grid operator say that it expects that there will be enough energy to keep up with the demand across california. let's bring in meteorologist kari hall to talk about any possible things we have in store for us. >> it looks like the heat that we'll see in the bay area will not be as extreme as what we're seeing across the region. definitely not the kind of heat we had around memorial day but we're looking at temperatures in some spots reaching into the 90s this afternoon, while we will get enough of an ocean breeze to keep much of the bay area cool

with some 60s and 70s and then as you head down to the south bay we do have those 80s in the forecast. but then as we look across the region we know that we've seen some extremely hot temperatures that's been all of the headlines are about. the highs reaching up to 115 in portland and it's going to be hotter there than what we'll see in phoenix and las vegas. we'll talk more about that and also what we're expecting that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks so much, kari. this morning, fireworks will begin to go on sale across parts of the state amid dangerously dry conditions, ripe for wildfires. cierra johnson live in san bruno this morning breaking down where you can and cannot use those fireworks. a lot of communities are saying don't try it, they're watching you. >> reporter: good morning, laura. that's exactly right. things have been so dry the last couple months, it's probably a good idea just to stay away from them, but despite the fact of

those dry temperatures, it is still legal in some communities and many stands have been set up across the area. take a look at your screen. we're going to break down where it is legal to have those fireworks. this map gives you an idea of where the sales are legal here in san bruno, fireworks stands are ready for the sale of the fireworks today. sales start this week in pacific, dublin, newark, union city, gilroy and several other north bay locations. while fireworks are legal in some communities, others have shared they plan to step up patrol this holiday weekend. the drought-like conditions can take it dangerous in some places to set off fireworks. san jose police took to twitter to remind residents fireworks in their community are illegal and can result in thousands of dollars in fines and jail time. for some of the folks we spoke with in the bay, the tradition they say should be left to the professionals. >> i hear illegal fireworks

going off all the time. i don't believe any should be sold. it should be controlled shows if they're going to have them. >> i don't think fireworks should be illegal but they should keep them small, keep them small and don't promote all the big parties with the illegal fireworks. >> reporter: some good advice there. it's not just the bay area or the state of california that's banning those personal fireworks. they're being banned across states like new mexico and idaho and bigger displays banned in some states like colorado and arizona where they've dean smaller brush fires. if you plan on visiting a stand like this, be sure that they are legal in your jurisdiction and use smart, you know, use -- be smart about it when you light the fireworks. keep the bucket of water handy and don't do it near dry brush. the fireworks can lead to disaster. we're live in san bruno, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> we don't need more

devastation. thanks. president biden hits the road tomorrow to push the infrastructure compromise that democrats and republicans announced last week. this after cleaning up his comments that threatened to derail that. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live this morning with the latest. tracie? >> hi, marcus. good morning. now he's hitting the road heading to wisconsin tomorrow to push this compromise that he was explaining over the weekend, explaining what it would take to get him to sign it. >> we're finally getting something done here that's been talked about in washington for decades. >> reporter: the democrat/republican infrastructure bill moves forward this week after president biden backed off what some republicans saw as a veto threat. the president making clear he will sign off on infrastructure, with or without separate legislation focused on families. >> it's very important that we pass reconciliation bill and a family plan that expanding child

care that lowers the cost of medicare, that supports families in the economy. >> reporter: but that will have to wait. lawmakers start writing up the infrastructure deal this week. $1.2 trillion focused on fixing roads and bridges. >> if you go home and talk to constituents who are stuck in traffic for an hour and a half getting to work they want these, they want a bridge coming to a town near them. >> reporter: the deal includes some money for clean energy and internet. >> this is not going to be added. the infrastructure bill we've done in a bipartisan way has paid for us. we've used the money that we have. we have moved money we had, not used yet. >> i am totally confident the president will sign it if it comes to his desk. >> reporter: can democrats get it there? it needs 60 votes in the senates to pass. that means every democrat plus ten republicans or more, some of the more progressive democrats want to spend more, decide to

vote no. tracie potts, nbc news. >> thank you. developing now, president biden directed u.s. military forces to carry out air strikes against iran-backed militia groups. this is new video of the military operation. the president's administration says that militias are behind recent drone attacks against u.s. military in iraq. now the strikes took place in iraq, syria border region where it's meant to deter and disrupt any future attacks. the statement goes on to say that u.s. troops are in iraq at the innovation of the government of iraq. this is for the sole purpose of assisting security forces in their efforts to defeat isis. this morning, crews in surfside, florida, are entering day five of search and rescue efforts following the deadly condo collapse. the death toll now stands at nine. at least 152 people are still missing. rescue crews have cut a 125-foot long trench, 20 feet wide, 40 feet deep in an attempt to

locate crevices for possible survivors. officials say they did identify another four victims and they're notifying their next of kin. families of the missing visited the site after requesting access to it. >> we did give all of the families an opportunity to privately visit the site. this was something that many of the family members had requested and so our teams worked to set up something to accommodate them and i think that it turned out very well and they were very grateful for the opportunity. >> miami-dade county ordered new audits of all older buildings within 30 days as officials work on relocating residents. a live look at san francisco this morning where the city is moving forward in trying to get all of its 35,000 workers all workers will have 30 reveal their vaccination status

so they can comply with cal osha regulations to work without a mask. the city says all employees must get vaccinated once the fda fully approves the shot. if you have a medical problem or religious reason you don't have to get one, but for the vast majority of workers if they refuse they could be terminated. more people living in the oregon border are being told to standby to evacuate as a fast-moving fire continues to grow. lightening sparked the lava fire in shasta trinity national forest. there are also evacuation warnings in place for people near the city of [ inaudible ]. more than 500 acres burned and the fire 20% contained. conditions there like here, kari, are dry and no rain in sight. >> they got up to over 100 degrees over the weekend. it was like 110, 111 in that area. the heat was very extreme and we're not seeing that yet. as you get ready to head out the door in freemont we're starting out with some clouds.

our typical marine layer in place and we're going to see those temperatures go from the upper 50s to the upper 60s. a very nice day in freemont. lunch time outside today as we are going to see our high temperatures 60s near the coast to low 90s in gilroy. we'll talk about what to expect as we come up a few more degrees in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> a couple things on the reports we'll point them out. the peninsula, the south bay, all look great. same thing for south county. walnut creek, southbound 6060 -- 680 a sign report dound in your fast lane. that is an issue around north main street. there maybe a traffic break. there is a crash eastbound away from the carquinez bridge toward the junction. it should be out of the lanes shortly as there is a chp crew on scene. back to you. >> thanks so much. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning,

rise and traffic is fine. the speed, there's good company here. i think good company. the rest of your commute coming up. the markets will start today with new records. let's go to the live futures. the futures and predictions that traders make on the open. the one thing you want to watch is the s&p 500, which sets new -- set new records rather on the close on friday. a lot going on this week. there's an opec meeting, a jobs report. i'll get to that in a second. the s&p 500 hit 4280 on friday. as we've talked about before that index is actually a much better measure of the overall health of equity simply because it has so many more companies than the dow 30 industrials which as the name says measures 30. it does feel naughty to look ahead to friday on monday but by friday it will be july and mean we get the monthly jobs report. we've been looking at these each

month for evidence the economy is recovering after the pandemic. one odd thing, i know you've seen this in places like restaurants, is there are a lot of job openings but doesn't necessarily mean people are taking the job. they're staying home. now a lot of politicians will tell you that's because they're getting paid to stay home, that unemployment benefits are so good they're discouraging people from returning to work and that could be the case in certain situations. but it is up to the states whether or not to tack on that extra unemployment benefit that was offered during the pandemic. california still does, but 22 states have stopped and we are not seeing people flooding in to fill those job openings. in economics as you know, nothing in life is cut and dry. the argument that generous benefits keeping people away from work is probably true for some families but the evidence isn't strong, it's likely the answer is way more complicated and very individual to each

individual american family. >> yeah. a lot of us haven't dealt with anything like this before so we don't know. >> exactly. the latest california department of finance numbers as well reaffirming what a lot of people may have already known about, just trying make it in the bay. home prices across the state are red hot. in may they were up nearly 40% over the same time a year ago. the median now $818,000. may was the second month in a row where prices statewide surpassed that level. home sales meanwhile down just slightly from april, but nearly twice the amount from last year's low when the pandemic was raging. new details in the build up to the summer olympics. one of the biggersest stars in tennis won't take part. serena williams made it official. although serena did not go into details she did say there were a lot of reasons making that degrees. the four-time gold medalist

>> waddling around. should have done it the cardi b way. >> no bumps around here right now. >> no. >> but we have a forecast for you, kari. >> let's get a bump in our temperatures. it will come up a few more degrees as we head into tomorrow. we'll start out with our usual cloud cover and it's going to be another really nice day. once all of this scours out. we're going to see our temperatures going in the east bay from the low 60s if you want go out for a hike you have early morning activities, yeah, the earlier the better. we'll see our temperatures going from the low 60s to the mid to upper 80s today. it's going to heat up pretty quickly here. the seven-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen. no major changes as we two through the week. we're up to 80 in palo alto. oakland today reaching 73. 83 in martinez as well as napa. but it will be as hot as 99 degrees in clearlake and that's where we will see the heat advisories going up.

that's the only spot that we'll see that intense heat as most of it has been over the pacific northwest. this is going to gradually back off as we head into the week and go back to its normal spot across the desert southwest. so for the bay area, we return to a more typical pattern where we see our ocean breeze and keeping some of our coastal areas cooler than what we'll see for the inland valleys. as we go into the week i wanted to show you livermore. our temperatures in the upper 80s here. by tuesday and wednesday are our warmest days of the week and we're also going to be fairly mild for our valleys heading into the end of the week. fourth of july is within sight and it still looks pretty good. we'll see our temperatures for some of our inland areas in the low to mid 80s while san francisco looks like it keeps the fog and, of course, we're always watching to see if it will be foggy for the fireworks. at this point the answer is yes. we'll see our temperatures remaining steady in the upper 60s up to 70 degrees by

an nbc bay area responds to an east bay family who simply wanted to do their laundry but they couldn't. >> consumer investigator chris chmura explains how a customer was hung out to dry. >> good morning. erica in oakland paid sears $891.66 for a brand new dryer and installation. erica says sears rescheduled delivery four times. the bigger issue, however, was how it was installed. erica says a crew stacked the washer and the dryer and this brackett right here wasn't properly screwed in. erica was worried this was unsafe. 12 days later another crew told her the first crew installed that dryer the wrong way and told her to stop using it until sears sent someone to fix it. a few weeks later nothing. and no follow-up. no working dryer either. she asked us for help. we contacted sears. within a few weeks it sent someone to properly attach the

more than a month after the mass shooting at the vta rail yard in san jose, some financial relief may be coming to the agency. a light rail service still on hold right now. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live at one of those quiet stops with a look at what's happening now. >> reporter: definitely no people here at the vta stop. periodically there is an announcement coming over the speakers reminding people that there is still no rail service. today, the agency could get a little bit of economic relief to try to start to move forward. state assemblyman says that the funding measure that could be announced today could make safety upgrades and repairs possible at the rail yard that has remain closed since the mass shooting may 26th. nine men died and equipment used to run the light rail system was also damaged. already the vta board declared an emergency to lease temporary space and that state funding would help with that relocation and retraining. the funding is also intended to

help with mental health support. saturday marks one month since the nine men will were killed while on the job by a took his. >> people are still grieving and who knows how long it's going to take that process to see itself through. no one -- it's something no one ever could imagine, of course. but at the same time, we understand that we have a service that we offer to the community that people depend on and so we're trying to move forward. >> reporter: now vta's interim general manager has said that light rail service could continue within a matter of weeks. just a couple weeks ago, but we have not got an firm timeline on that. we'll bring you the story about the funding that is happening today later on in the day. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, kris. to the pandemic, this morning the delta variant being

called the third most common across california. new data from the state's department of public health shows the variant making up more than 14% of cases. that is up from nearly 5% of cases in may. the variant first identified in india may be twice as transmissible as the conventional coronavirus strain. health experts say the delta variant poses a greater chance of infection for unvaccinated people if they are exposed. the concerns over that variant come as california vaccination rate continues to slow. the state is averaging fewer than 100,000 daily shots. so far over a quarter of eligible residents are not vaccinated. 71% and 12 and older have received at least one dose and 57% across the state are fully vaccinated. >> as the bay area reopens, people are flocking to popular tourist destinations, but in a couple parts of san francisco, car burglaries have gone up more than 750%.

this is according to the chronicle. from april to may of this year, break-ins increased 94%. more than 2,000 cars were looted this year and police are warning you do not leave anything of value in your car. frightening moments off the waters at gray whale cove between pacific over the weekend. a 6 foot great white shark bit a surfer's leg. it was taken of a shark sight at the same beach a few weeks ago. the victim is now out of the hospital and the beach remains closed. we spoke with one man finishing at the time and he managed to call for help. >> i looked at the guy and said help might be on it's way but let's get you taken care of. we used my fishing equipment and did a tourniquet on his leg. >> news of the shark attack hit close to home for one woman and she actually survived her own shark attack in half moon bay back in 2013.

you're right. the search for survivors started in the moments just after the building fell to the ground and it's gone nonstop since then, except for a brief period yesterday when family members and loved ones of those missing got their chance to see the devastation up close. >> reporter: teams are still pulling away pieces of the crumbled high rise. >> as they pick up the large pieces of debris it allows for a whole other round of the dogs that make the rounds that look for survives are and allow those paramedics embedded with the team, the surgeons embedded with the team, engineers embedded with the teams to do their jobs. >> reporter: a job that continues around the clock because these heros understand time, like the elements, is an enemy. >> we have heard taps. we have heard falling. we have heard twisting metal. we hear sounds all the time. >> reporter: the noriega family hasn't heard from their 92-year-old grandmother since the collapse. >> i fell it my knees, just in

realization that my grandmother was in that building. >> reporter: as they rushed in they did get what they considered a message, finding images and items from her apartment in the debris. >> it would be a miracle to bring her out alive. it would be a miracle of the ages and my grandmother's soul is in heaven i know she's with jesus. either way she's good so we have found comfort in that. >> reporter: comfort, or at least some understanding, what is dozens of families search for as they're allowed a closer look at the site sunday. toys pulled from the wreckage and messages of hope line the sidewalk, a memorial of sorts not far from this fence covered with pictures of the more than 150 still missing here. yeah. a little more on that investigation. now, engineers, other experts seem to be focused on the bottom of the 13-story tower and the

possibility of a structural failure either in or below the underground garage. laura and marcus, it's still very early but that's where they think all of this may have started. >> finding more and this is still a rescue mission. good to hear that too. thank you. quarter to 6:00. to politics and president biden one step closer to an infrastructure deal this morning. >> although not quite the deal he wanted. scott mcgrew. >> that's right. that's what compromises tend to do. biden has made a compromise. they call it a bipartisan deal with a small group of republicans to push through an infrastructure deal. couple of things to watch. does he have enough votes from republicans to get it through the senate? remember he needs ten, assuming all democrats vote yes. that's the second big question, will democrats vote yes? a live look at the white house this morning, the reason democrats might defect on the deal is because they feel it doesn't go far enough.

but remember, they do have a separate route for another side deal pushing through what they consider bigger and better portions of the bill separately through what they call reconciliation. they need a simple majority in the senate, not 60. we can say there's progress. here's a republican senator praising the first part of the deal. >> it's a great deal. it is actually going to provide the infrastructure that american people want, that they need, that will make our country more prosperous for all americans. i hope it's enough. we'll see going forward. i'll continue to work for the bill. >> positive energy. meanwhile the president will meet with israel's president today. this is not the gentleman elected to replace benjamin netanyahu. israel has a prime minister and a president simultaneously. as do many countries that have parliamentary systems. video here of our secretary of state antony blinken meeting with israel's president rivlin. the importance is a re-set with

those temperatures in just a bit. let me get you out the door about to head out for a run or jog in pleasanton, parts of the tri-valley starts out with clouds and then temperatures in the upper 50s and a slow warmup today but it will clear out as the warmup happens. we'll head into the mid 70s. seven-day forecast is already at the bottom of the screen. take a look at our temperature trends. we'll see a high reaching up to about 72 in hayward, freemont, the mid 70s there and some mid 80s for livermore, but upper 80s for concord and then you can see napa will reach up to about 83 degrees while san jose will see a life about 81. some upper 90s as with we look at clearlake where we will see the heat advisory. a lot of that extreme heat staying to the north and east of the bay area, even hotter for us tomorrow in some of those spots but we're going to keep the 70s and 60s near the coast. that extreme heat that we've seen over the pacific northwest really breaking all-time record high temperatures will gk off o

couple days. just can't come soon enough. after seeing those temperatures today, once again, headed back up to 115 degrees in portland. that's going to be hotter than phoenix and vegas. it's going to be extremely hot farther to the north and we'll be watching that as far as seattle reaching 109. we're not going to see anything like that this week. we'll see some mostly mid 80s and a little bit warmer for tomorrow reaching the low 0ds, but the fourth of july is within view and looks pretty good at this point. although we'll keep the clouds and the fog near the coast a lot of the time, blocks the view of the fireworks, but we're going to see nice weather anywhere from the 60s to the 80s for the inland areas. mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute? >> no major surprises. we like no surprises on your morning commute and the peninsula and south bay looking good. san jose does have the slowing going on for another few minutes

north 101 from 680 to alum rock. 84 an early start and we have it continuing right there, getting down in towards sunol cutting through pleasanton and livermore and off of 580 which is moving smoothly. your drive time still a couple minutes but nothing major out of the altamont pass. adding a couple minutes for highway 4 out of antioch through concord for a little bit of slowing there out of bay point and right here, vasco road is starting to show that significant slowdown as you get toward the last bend in the road over towards 580. that's where we see typical drive here. live look outside, the bay bridge as well. the toll plaza still moves smoothly but there is slowing past treasure island somewhere in the low clouds here. this is the time we see more traffic flow cause more slowing anyway. back to you. happening now, more bay area courthouses are taking more steps in the return to normal. starting today, distancing will to longer be required in santa

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." new details to tell you about for a second time this month, southwest airlines canceling and tlag thousands of flights over the weekend. according to aviation blog, one mile at a time, nearly half of southwest schedules were trade or canceled on friday alone. flight aware shows that another 307 flights were canceled saturday. yesterday things were back to normal. the airline is blaming weather for the widespread surface disruption. more than 15 months after the pandemic halted the industry, the first big cruise ship has set sail from a u.s.

at 7:00 a.m. for more of the cruise ship test run, part of nbc news network wide series reopening america, taking a look at how life is getting back to normal and a new normal ahead of the first major holiday expected to draw some big crowds throughout. no official pride parade in san francisco this year. this is for a second year in a row, but there were plenty of pride related events over the weekend. a lot of people took part in the people's march. they choses the route of the first gay liberation march 51 years ago and people stood in solidarity with a unified message. >> the event today is focused on the voices of black, brown and indigenous people. generally in our spectrum, we get lost and we decided to do the people's march in order to get voices back. >> the group then marched to pacific center for a rally. the focus was on racial and transgender injustice. new york city celebrating pride over the weekend, events

good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. first, it's going to be a little warm today but here in the bay area we've got something to be grateful for. we're not in portland or las vegas because records there are said to be shattered across the west. portland is expected to reach 115 degrees with temperatures in sin city expected to hike up to 107, two of the many extreme places we're seeing really big heat. >> and that is keeping local utilities paying close attention as of now, state energy leaders do not expect to issue a flex alert, despite the extreme temperatures. cal iso says the grid operator expects that there will be enough energy to keep up with that demand. now we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall to talk about any possible relief we have in sight, kari. >> we will see the temperatures backing off as we go through the week but part of the reasons
