good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. first, it's going to be a little warm today but here in the bay area we've got something to be grateful for. we're not in portland or las vegas because records there are said to be shattered across the west. portland is expected to reach 115 degrees with temperatures in sin city expected to hike up to 107, two of the many extreme places we're seeing really big heat. >> and that is keeping local utilities paying close attention as of now, state energy leaders do not expect to issue a flex alert, despite the extreme temperatures. cal iso says the grid operator expects that there will be enough energy to keep up with that demand. now we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall to talk about any possible relief we have in sight, kari. >> we will see the temperatures backing off as we go through the week but part of the reasons

we've seen the really historic heat wave is because of a high pressure centered over the pacific northwest and with climate change the extreme events may become more common in spots that aren't used to dealing with this kind of heat. 115 degrees today in portland, 109, 110 actually for a high in seattle, and we'll reach up to 109 in phoenix today. hotter in portland than phoenix. it's really crazy to say, laura. >> very much so. thanks so much. 6:01. as of this morning, in some select locations across the state, fireworks will go on sale ahead of the fourth of july holiday. this, despite the dry conditions making things ripe for wildfires. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live in san bruno where you can buy the fireworks. sierra, a lot of other communities are saying don't even try it, don't cross the line. they're watching you. >> yes, good morning, laura. you need to pay attention to

what your jurisdiction says you can and cannot use. here in san bruno the sale of fireworks is legal. you can see behind me a huge setup here in the parking lot of a mall. you will see a lot more sites like this in some of the communities because we're a couple days away from the fourth of july. take a look at your screen. we've broken down where it is legal to sell those safe fireworks. here in san bruno as i mentioned the stands are ready. today is the first day of sale. sales start this week in pacific, dublin, newark, union city, gilroy and other north bay locations are going to begin to sell fireworks a couple days ahead of the holiday. while fireworks are legal in some communities, others have already shared they plan to step up patrols this holiday weekend. the drought-like conditions as well as those hot temperatures make it dangerous in some places to set off fireworks. san jose police actually took to twitter to remind theirn that community are illegalan

result in thousands of dollars in fines or even jail time. for some of the folks we spoke with in the bay area, they say it's a tradition that should be left to the professionals. >> i hear illegal fireworks going off all the time. i don't believe any fireworks should be sold. it should be controlled shows. >> i don't think fireworks should be illegal but keep them small, know what i mean? keep them small and don't promote all these big parties with these big illegal fireworks. >> reporter: california isn't the only state to have some communities ban the use of personal fireworks. other locations like new mexico and idaho have done things similar. there's already been some smaller wildfires, smaller bush fires. as we go into the fourth of july holiday it is crucial that if this is legal in your community, you do what you can to keep

yourself and those around you and really the land around you safe this fourth of july holiday. we're live in san bruno, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> we all have to be smart about it. thanks. this morning, crews in surfside, florida r entering day five of the search and rescue efforts following a deadly condo collapse. the death toll standing at nine. 152 still missing. the rescue crews have cut a 125-foot long trench 20 feet wide and 40 feet deep in an attempt to locate crevices for survivors. officials said they did identify another four victims. families of the missing also visited that site of the collapse yesterday, this is after requesting access to did families an opportunity to privately visit the site. this was something that many of the family members had requested and so our teams worked to set up something to accommodate them

and i think that it turned out very well and they were very grateful for the opportunity. >> miami-dade county ordered new audits of all older buildings within 30 days as officials work on relocating residents. in a sister building as well. developing now, president biden has directed u.s. military forces to carry out air strikes against iran's backed militia groups. this is new video of that military separation. his administration says the militias are behind repeat drone attacks against the u.s. military in iraq. the strikes took place in the iraq/syria border region and were meant to deter or tis rupt any future attacks. the statement guess goes on to say u.s. troops are there at the invitation of the fwfts government for the sole purposes of assisting to defeat isis. a look at the white house this morning where president biden will welcome the president

of israel today. he is approaching the end of his seven-year turn. that meeting comes just before biden hits the road to push the infrastructure compromise. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live outside of d.c. with the latest. >> hi, marcus. he's in lacrosse, wisconsin, giving a speech on the bill tomorrow, but almost got derailed, president biden, over the weekend, explaining what it will take for him to sign it. >> we're finally getting something done here that's been talked about in washington for decades. >> reporter: the democrat/republican infrastructure bill moves forward this week after president biden backed off what some republicans saw as a veto threat. the president making clear he will sign off on infrastructure, with or without separate legislation focused on families.

>> it's very important that we pass reconciliation bill and a family plan that expanding child care that lowers the cost of medicare, that supports families in the economy. >> reporter: but that will have to wait. lawmakers start writing up the infrastructure deal this week. $1.2 trillion focused on fixing roads and bridges. >> if you go home and talk to constituents who are stuck in traffic for an hour and a half getting to work they want these, they want a bridge coming to a town near them. >> reporter: the deal includes some money for clean energy and internet. >> this is not going to be added. the infrastructure bill we've done in a bipartisan way has paid for us. we've used the money that we have. we have moved money we had, not used yet. >> i am totally confident the president will sign it if it comes to his desk. >> reporter: can democrats get it there? it needs 60 votes in the senates to pass.

>> all right. having an issue with tracie potts's microphone. thank you for that update. 6:07 this morning. the world health organization is actually urging the fully vaccinated to keep masking up sand practice social distancing. this as the highly contagious delta variant continues spreading. if you're heading to get your vaccine today you may see a new warning added to the pfizer and moderna covid vaccines. fda added a rare heart inanymation in both of those vaccines after the cdc says more than 1200 cases have been actually reported and mostly people 30 and under who received their second dose of the vaccine. however, health officials say those cases are rare. a live look at san francisco this morning where the city is moving forward on trying to get all of the 35,000 workers vaccinated. starting today, all current workers will have 30 days to

reveal the vaccination status so they can comply with cal osha regulations to work without a mask. the city says all of its employees must get vaccinated once the fda fully approves the shot. if you have a medical problem or religious reason you don't have to get one, but for the vast majority if they refuse they could be terminated is. more living near the oregon border are told to standby to evacuate as a fast-moving fire continues to grow. lightning sparked a fire in the trinity shasta forest friday morning. there are evacuation warnings in place for people near the city. more than 500 acres have burned and 20% of the fire is contained. back in the bay area live look outside, to the east bay. good morning, oakland. sun is up across the bay area. hopefully not warming things up too much. it depends on where you are. let's check in with kari who has a look at our forecast. >> it's going to be a nice day

for a lot of us, but it will be heating up in some of our interior valleys. over to pleasant hill, we're starting out with a cloudy sky and temperatures in the upper 50s. we can see how our temperatures warm up as the sky clears and we'll go from the upper 60s to low 80s by early in the afternoon. there are going to be a little bit warmer here compared to other spots. san jose reaching 81 degrees but 90 in antioch today and low 80s for napa while we'll see upper 90s for spots like clearlake under a heat advisory. we'll talk more about a bump in temperatures just a few more degrees coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> more cars out there, but no big deal as far as our speed sensors go, looking good. the san jose slowing clears from the first slow. the second one will kick in about a half hour. peninsula, north 101, slowing heading up before you get to the san francisco airport exit. there is a crash blocking one lane and also activity on the

there will be a wide range in temperatures across the bay area. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. >> we're talking about the bay bridge with the backup. look at that since the last report we filled in the middle lanes, starting to fill them all in except hov. three or more, you get a quicker drive through the toll plaza. more coming up. good morning. happy monday to you. it's elon musk's birthday today. he turns 50 years old. the markets will start the day with new records. let's go straight to the futures and the predictions that traders make on the open. the one you want to watch is the s&p 500 which set new records on the close friday. a lot going on. there's an opec meeting and jobs report. i'll get to that in a second. s&p 500 hit that record 4280 on friday. as we've talked about before that index is actually a much better measure of the overall health of equities simply because it's got so many companies in the index than the dow 30 industrials which as the same says measures just 30.

so it does feel a little bit naughty to look ahead to friday when it's only a monday, but we have got the jobs report. by friday we'll get the report for june. we have been looking for evidence the economy is recovering after the pandemic. i know you've seen this in places like restaurants is there are a lot of job openings but doesn't necessarily mean people are taking the jobs. they're staying home. politicians will tell you that's because they're getting paid to stay home, unemployment benefits are so good people from returning to work and that could be the case in certain situations. however it's up to the states whether or not to tack on that extra unemployment benefit that was offered during the pandemic. california still offers it but 22 states have stopped and we're not seeing people flooding in to fill those job openings.

even when getting the extra pay. nothing in economics or life is cut and dry. the argument that generous benefits keeping people away from work may be true for some families but the evidence isn't strong, it's likely the answer is way more complicated and video individualized for each family making decisions. >> it's interesting to see job postings and bonuses they're offering. >> desperate. >> thank you, scott. 6:17. venmo will let users sell products and services on their personal accounts for a fee, of course. the new policy will take effect july 20th. users will be charged nearly 2% plus a 10 cent fee. this is the latest attempt by paypal which owns venmo to profit from the payment app. this is more than 70 million users. last year they rolled out a credit card and a flexible cash rewards program. okay. lot of people talking about this morning, rapper cardi b has done

and out the door but you just sit tight before you hear kari's forecast this morning. wanted to show you this video we have where some people are trying to cool off in the desert by taking ice baths. >> oh, my. >> take a look at that. oh, yeah. and so, you know, of course you want to do this with the help of a medical professional. don't try this at home but sometimes just taking a dip in lake tahoe can feel like this. >> that's true. >> people are saying this is helping them stay cool, helping them stay cool and also good for your health too. i mean, i don't know if this is how we're going to beat the summer heat. take a look at these temperatures and what we're starting with, we are seeing some of the clouds over parts of the bay area. a wide range in temperatures so we're going to see some low 80s in san jose, but then some low 90s in gilroy and petaluma headed towards the mid 80s. as the seven-day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen you'll want to check it out as

we see the extreme temperatures across the pacific northwest. it's going to start to ease off but i know that relief from the heat can't come soon enough for spots like seattle and portland seeing some record all-time record high temperatures in that region. for us we've seen a slight warmup in our temperatures and we're going to get a boost of another four or five degrees tomorrow. let me show you livermore. we'll reach into the upper 80s and we'll see more of that heading into tomorrow, but then we go into the rest of the week with some milder weather and that includes the fourth of july. coming up this sunday looks pretty good with some low 80s for some of our warmest spots inland. of course, for san francisco we monitor to see if there's going to be fog and at this point the answer is yes. we're not going to see any change in the pattern here, but it's also what's keeping it cool near the coastline. mike, you've got some breaking news. what's going on? >> over on the peninsula we told you about a crash near sfo, northbound 101 is jamming up just before you get to that sfo

exit. i don't think we have to get over to el camino or 280 because it's a short section of slowing but there are six vehicles involved, so chp has called what they call a sigalert. it's going to take about a half hour to clear these vehicles and hopefully get it cleared sooner but that will be a distraction. unexpectedly slow north past sfo for 101. no major injuries, that's the good news, five, possibly ten minutes on your drive into the city. south bay, east bay looking great except for the bay bridge toll plaza and highway 4. those are the areas seeing the most slowing over the last few. the bay bridge toll plaza itself, the backup is filling in the toll plaza now. back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> after hours on the phone and several months in the ringer, one bay area's mom brand new dryer wasn't working. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds. >> ransomware attacks already

good morning. erica in oakland paid sears $891.66 for a brand new dryer and installation. erica says sears rescheduled delivery four times. the bigger issue, however, was how it was installed. erica says a crew stacked the washer and the dryer and this brackett right here wasn't properly screwed in. erica was worried this was unsafe. 12 days later another crew told her the first crew installed that dryer the wrong way and told her to stop using it until sears sent someone to fix it. a few weeks later nothing. and no follow-up. no working dryer either. she asked us for help. we contacted sears. within a few weeks it sent someone to properly attach the five months after erica first ordered her dryer for $891, she

teams have cut a 125-foot long trench, 20 feet wide, 40 feet deep, in an attempt to locate crevices for possible survivors. coming up a live report from the scene on today's search for the victims and the heartbreak that their families are enduring. 6:32. more than one month after the mass shooting at the vta rail yard in san jose, some financial relief may soon be coming to the agency. light rail service remains on hold. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live this morning at one of those quiet stops but a look at the key vote happening later today, kris. >> good morning to you. so periodically there is an announcement coming over the speakers at vta light rail stops reminding people that there is still no light rail service, but today in about two hours, we'll hear from leaders about a funding measure that could help the agency and riders and families get a little bit closer to normal. a state and local leaders say

that funding will make safety upgrades and repairs at the rail yard that has remained closed since mass shooting on may 26th. the gunfire that killed nine people also damaged the equipment used to run the light rail. now already vta boards declared an emergency in order to lease temporary space and the state funding would help with relocation and retraining. assembly and senate bills 129 intended to help with mental health support. saturday marks one month since the nine men were killed while on the job by a coworker who then took his own life. people are still grieving. who knows how long it will take the process. it's something no one could imagine, of course. at the same time, we understand we offer to the community that people depend on.

we're trying to move forward. >> reporter: vta's interim general manager has said in the last couple weeks that light rail service could resume in a few weeks, but there's no definitive timeline on that. at 8:30 this morning we will get an update on that funding measure to get voted on in sacramento today. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. this morning, the delta variant is being called the third most common across california. new data from the state's department of public health showing the variant makes up more than 14% of those cases, up from nearly 5% of cases in may. the variant first identified in india, may be twice as transmissible as the conventional coronavirus strain. health experts say that the delta variant poses a greater chance of fun for unvaccinated people if they are exposed. the concerns over that variant comes as californians

vaccination rates continue to slow. the state averaging fewer than 100,000 daily doses. over a quarter of eligible residents are still not vaccinated according to the cdc, 71% 12 and older have gotten one dose and 57% across the state are fully vaccinated. some pretty frightening moments off pacific over the weekend. six foot great white shark bit a surfer's leg. this is video taken of a shark sight at the same beach a few weeks ago. this morning the victim is out of the hospital but the beach remains closed indefinitely. we spoke with one man who was fishing and called for help. i looked at the guy and said help might be on its way but let's get you taken care of. >> frightening moments after a >> quick thinking there. with july 4th around the corner

shark -- are extremely rare. head to nbcbayarea.com and click on shark attacks in our trending bar at the top of the home page. as the bay area reopens, people are flocking to popular tourist destinations but in a couple parts of san francisco car burglaries have gone up more than 750%. that's according to the chronicle this morning which reports car break-ins in chinatown and fisherman's wharf have increased since may of last year and from april to may of this year, those break-ins have increased 94%. more than 2,000 cars were looted this year. police are warning not to leave anything of value inside that car. the latest california department of finance numbers reaffirming what people may already have known about just trying to make it in the bay. home prices across the state are red hot. in may they were up nearly 40% over the same time one year ago. the median $818,000.

may was the second month in a row where prices surpassed that level. >> one east bay city is moving forward with plans for a fourth of july parade while surrounding communities are canceling celebrations. the orinda fourth of july celebrations have drown thousands for years. >> now some are expressing concerns over the ongoing pandemic. leaders with the orinda association say they've put in changes to try to keep people safe. >> the idea we have here is that the parade route is about a mile long so people can spread out here and secondly, we suggest people wear masks only because unvaccinated people should wear masks even though it's outside, especially to protect unvaccinated kids. >> the parade will be streamed online for people who don't feel comfortable attending. it's 6:37 right now. your monday morning, hope you're coming off a great weekend. taking a live look outside. this time in danville this morning. very picturesque start to our

monday morning. want to check in with meteorologist kari hall who has a look at our forecast and maybe a peek of the rest of the week as well. >> yeah. it's going to be a fairly nice week for much of the bay area. now we are going to be warming up in some spots. pleasant hill as you're getting ready to head out in parts of the east bay we see the clouds overhead but it will be clearing out quickly as we go throughout the morning. temperatures in the upper 50s in the next hour, some low 60s by late morning and reaching into the low 80s here by early in the afternoon. you're going to see our highs anywhere from the 60s near the coast to the 90s. that's what we'll see in gilroy today especially for some of these spots in the inland valleys. they're going to be heating up. we'll talk more about this and what you can expect coming up in a few minutes. mike, you are following breaking news. is that still going? >> on the latest update, good news, the crash has cleared but there may be as many as six vehicles and crews on the shoulder. we see slowing out of burrell

>> reporter: teams are still pulling away pieces of the crumbled high rise. >> as they pick up the large pieces of debris it allows for a whole other round of the dogs that make the rounds that look for survivors and allow those paramedics embedded with the team, the surgeons embedded with the team, engineers embedded with the teams to do their jobs. >> reporter: a job that continues around the clock because these heros understand time, like the elements, is an enemy. >> we have heard taps. we have heard falling. we have heard twisting metal. we hear sounds all the time. >> reporter: the noriega family hasn't heard from their 92-year-old grandmother since the collapse. >> i fell it my knees, just in realization that my grandmother was in that building. >> reporter: as they rushed in they did get what they considered a message, finding images and items from her apartment in the debris. >> it would be a miracle to bring her out alive. it would be a miracle of the

ages and my grandmother's soul is in heaven i know she's with jesus. either way she's good so we have found comfort in that. >> reporter: comfort, or at least some understanding, what is dozens of families search for as they're allowed a closer look at the site sunday. toys pulled from the wreckage and messages of hope line the sidewalk, a memorial of sorts not far from this fence covered with pictures of the more than 150 still missing here. yeah. a little more on the investigation now, engineers, experts focused on the bottom of that 13-story tower and a possible structural failure either in or below the underground parking garage. it's still very early in that work as well, but that's at least one part they're pinpointing right now. >> trying to look at, you know, why this all happened. in the meantime jay, the effort

there is official rescue mission. do they have any indication that it could switch to recovery any time soon? >> laura, nothing official, but you do see some changes here. heavier equipment being brought in. they're kind of changing some of the strategy as they move in. again, a lot of hope still here with the rescue teams, with the families that are watching, but you can see that it's slowly shifting that way and i think that's a process that will take a couple of days here. they'll continue to hold out hope as long as they can, continue to try to find someone alive in that rubble, but it's definitely moving that way. >> lot of prayers for miracles. thanks for the latest. 6:46 right now. moving on to politics now, president biden one step closer to an infrastructure deal this morning. >> though not quite the deal he wanted, scott mcgrew. >> that's what compromises tend to do, right. president biden has made a compromise, they would call it a bipartisan deal, with a small

group of republicans to push through an infrastructure deal. now there are a couple votes fr republicans to get it through the senate? he needs ten, assuming all democrats vote yes, and that is the second big question, will all democrats vote yes? a live look at the white house this morning. the reason democrats might defect on the deal because they feel it doesn't go far enough. they do have a separate route for another side deal, pushing through what they would consider bigger and better portions of a bill separately through what they call reconciliation. they just need a simple majority in the senate for that, not 60 votes. no matter what happens, though, we can say there is progress this morning. here's a republican senator praising the first part of the deal. >> it's a great deal. it is actually going to provide the infrastructure that american people want, that they need, that will make our country more prosperous for all americans.

happeninging down here, meteorologist kari hall has a look at that forecast. >> yeah. looks pretty good for us today but we're seeing our fog if you're not even going to space, you're just going to maybe travel around the region, we're going to see our fog sticking with us here in the bay area but clearing out for the inland valleys. take a look at these temperatures and where we're headed for today. we're 63 for a high at half moon bay. 73 in oakland. we have some low 80s for the south bay, but then 90. it will be hot in antioch and even hotter farther to the north where clearlake will be under a heat advisory and we're going to be near 99 degrees today. now it gets hotter for tomorrow, some spots getting up to the upper 90s in the inland east bay, but nothing compared to the historic heat that they're seeing in seattle and portland. really hot again this afternoon and as the week goes on we are going to see the heat backing off. of course the impacts have been

wide ranging. so we're seeing this high pressure that's going to move off towards the east and park across the desert southwest where it normally is. for us we're looking at our typical weather pattern where we get enough of an ocean breeze to keep our temperatures cool coastside but our inland valleys much warmer reaching into the low 90s tomorrow and then mid 80s for the rest of the weekend. we can see it the fourth of july this sunday and the weather is looking pretty good. what's happening now on the roads? >> we have more slowing into hayward for the east shore -- east bay, the nimitz freeway slows down and will affect folks off the caster valley. sounds like a disabled vehicle in your right lanes around a street and maybe a tire in the left lane, possibly a tire from a disabled vehicle. that's why it's disabled. there's a minor crash reported southbound nimitz. we'll get more detail and call it out if there's a problem. so far the south bay, peninsula and freemont or south is looking fine slowing through concord and also the richmond bridge over
