bottled inventory teetering on the shelves. one of the worker's wife called us and told us about the shaking. >> she was kind of scared how long it was going to last and how it was going to be, but it was a little bit, a short time. >> no damage or injuries were reported but experts say bigger quakes are sure to come. meteorologist kari hall joining us now, and kari, this was felt by people all across the bay area from san francisco to san jose. can you talk to us more about the fault line and where this is all centered? >> yeah. as you mentioned it is on the hayward fault and it was felt across the bay area. you can see all of these areas where we ha lighter blue shading that shows where people actually felt it and all of the reports that came in and on that hayward fault we watch it very closely because it runs through some of the most densely populated parts of the bay area in the east bay and once again

sanchez is live from the airport with a look at that. good morning, kris. >> good morning, marcus. i flew to new york with my family to see the grandparents about a week ago or so and when we left mineta san jose, got to new york, every airport that we passed through was packed. every flight was fully booked. clearlier with in the middle of a summer travel spike. on sunday, 2.2 million travelers were screened through ts, a checkpoints, the highest volume since the start of the pandemic and up from 633,000 on the same date a year ago. sundays by the way are still the busiest days. all travelers still have to mask up in the airport and on the planes unless you are eating or drinking and because of demand, prices are up. airports and airlines are struggling to staff enough tsa workers, pilots and other flight crews. many of russ rebooking travel we postponed during the pandemic using up vouchers. airlines were facing a pilot

shortage as many pilots were reaching the mandatory retirement age. so you'll needs to also plan for testing depending on where you go. >> that point of check-in they go through your passports as well as these papers to make sure you have the negative covid test. >> i was surprised that there was no need to test you enter the country but only to exit because i've heard discrepancies based on where you're going. >> reporter: now if you leave the country the cdc requires that you have a negative test or proof of recovery from covid within 72 hours of travel, even if you are vaccinated. make sure you budget for that because depending on where you go it can be quite expensive. now because of the demand and the staffing issues, one airline, american airlines, just this weekend, canceled 400 flights. they estimate they may have to cancel 50 flights a day through the middle of july. so wherever you're going, make sure that you are calm and

patient. at mineta san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> that's scary if you're trying to come back home and they change your flight. >> thanks, kris. >> you're coming to work. in south florida slow going for search teams digging through the rubble of the collapsed condo tower. the remains of 11 people have been recovered. that means another 150 people are still unaccounted for. at this point the effort is still considered a rescue mission, not a recovery effort, meaning there's still hope people may be alive and trapped in the rubble. perts believe it will take time to determine an exact cause of the collapse but corrosion of some kind is the leading cause. president biden hits the road today and the topic, roads in need of repair. he's visiting a transit center in wisconsin to push the democrat/republican infrastructure deal, but it's far from a done deal just yet.

73% contained. it was burning over 2,000 -- 200 achers there. the fire that began in los padres national forest in monterey county over a week ago. overnight the eviction orders were lifted. firefighters expect to reach full containment next week. new this morning, the state budget is now on governor newsom governor newsom's desk awaiting his finally approval. he's expected to sign it before thursday after lawmakers approved the over $262 billion operating budget. it includes $600 in new stimulus checks for millions of low-income californians who make less than $75,000 a year and child tax credits. also part of the budget $1.5 billion in grants for small businesses struggling due to the pandemic as well as more homeless funding and fire prevention aid. last night newsom signed a deal

set to expire tomorrow, however the agreement will extend the protections until the end of september. an important vote today on the fiery debate future of san jose's berryessa flea market. city council is slated to decide on how to move forward on the rezoning proposal. it is a bart station. most of the 30 acres that that market sits on is set to be developed with offices, apartment and retail shops. the flea market would be moved to a smaller site. new details, walnut creek police not commenting on what witnesses say was a loud explosion and arrest soon after, apparently involving fireworks. the explosion happened a little after 10:00 near broadway plaz za. we're not showing the man arrested because it's not clear why he was detained. san mateo county deputies said ill local fireworks are tied to

listening to see slow off the berkeley curve. the construction has cleared through berkeley. good morning. very happy tuesday to you. a big but maybe temporary win for facebook in court on monday. a federal judge threw out a case against the social media giant brought but by the federal trade commission and two dozen states. they were asking facebook's earlier deals like buying instagram be undone, a breakup of facebook. but the judge in the case said the governments waited too long to bring the case and didn't bring enough proof. shares in facebook spiked on the news. facebook's stock went up so much, facebook itself is worth more than $1 trillion for the first time ever. i mentioned temporary, the accusations against facebook are still there and the judge said the plaintiffs can refile the charges. this is just the first chapter. the stock market continues to set records, new records on the

nasdaq and the s&p 500. third day in a row for the s&p 500. shares in southwest continue to sink as that airline is continuing to infuriate passengers with last-minute cancellations nationwide. big news out of united, the airline is buying a ton of new planes. the biggest order in its history, 270. 4,000 new jobs here in the bay area. united one of the largest private employers in san mateo county. the new planes will have new seat back entertainment and the bigger overhead bins. chick-fil-a is the most loved fast food chain in the united states again according to the american consumer satisfaction index. chipotle comes in second. third place is crowded between panera, kfc, arby's and others, dominos the best large pizza chain and papa john's and pizza hut. as far as burgers go, wendy's burger king tied for best burger

until march and now the bay area average is $4.12 a gallon. what abouted. >> have you noticed this? this data coming from nbc news in the nielsen i.q. specific to the bay area and look, meat prices especially have gone up now. chicken up 18 cents a pound, ground beef up 54 cents a pound. bacon is up 40 cents for a 16 ounce package. disney, fans you have to wait a little longer to be on the happiest place on the sea. disney cruise line postponing its first cruise since the pandemic after some of its employees had inconsistent covid results. the ship was supposed to set sail from port canaveral in florida. the cdc approved for the cruise line to conduct a two-night test cruise with 300 employees. it's postponed until next month. 5:17. trending this morning, one of the toughest men on television called out for a parenting fail.

stories. traffic, folks, we'll get to kari. you want to hear her forecast and our climate. the green sensors dominate this map which is great. we want that. we zoom over here toward the dublin interchange, smooth flow of traffic over here. 84, the earlier incident cleared but slowing as you head past ruby hill again. where things narrow a bit and we see the traditional slowing out of the altamont pass, the only other slowing. 680 still slow heading up towards the bridge itself been there 20 minutes after the crews cleared, so we'll track that. there's nothing going on. cal transdid clear that. now westbound 80 toward the berkeley curve the curve just outside of emeryville is there. this is a beautiful view of the city lights and i'm glad i could explain the berkeley curve. >> i love the fog that's hovering over right now.

it's in san francisco. we're going to see this clearing out quickly today. we're seeing it in the east bay as we take a live look in walnut creek as the sun rises. as you're making early plans make sure you're out early today because it's going to really warm up today reaching into the low 90s. morgan hill towards 93 degrees. we'll see upper 90s in the east bay with antioch today reaching 97 degrees and in oakland today, just a little bit warmer than yesterday reaching 78 degrees and along the coast we're staying mild here as that fog lingers just along the immediate coastline. when you head to redwood city, it's 84 for a high today. we'll see some upper 60s san fr north bay temperatures widespread 90s here because it's going to be warm in those inland valleys as the sunshine continues to heat us up with the high pressure across the region. we've seen some changes that will be happening especially for those areas across the pacific northwest dealing with that

record heat. going into the weekend there will be a surge some of monsoonal moisture and if you'll be going to the sierra this weekend head's up there may be thunderstorms nearby and we'll keep you up to date on that. our temperatures today, the warmest day in the forecast reaching into the 90s, lot of 80s as we go into the weekend, looking forward to the fourth of july, with those inland temperatures in the mid 80s and san francisco will be in the upper 60s. it's going to be nice the next few days. let's turn to our climate in crisis and focus on the animals that are threatened by hotter temperatures. sea level rise and wildfires, and biologists are saying that 35% of plant and animals may become extinct by the year 2050. i want to highlight some of those as you're out and about and make sure you're taking lots of pictures because you may not see something this beautiful. this is the blue copper butterfly and it calls the sonoma coast home and the sierra and it relies on the cool

will send families automatic payments for the tax credit. >> it will put thousands of dollars in family bank accounts over the summer but you may want to delay the payments. chris chmura is going to explain why and show us how. >> on the surface immediate automatic payments of the child tax credit seem like a no-brainer, money, now. but here's the thing. the irs says payments today are actually an advance on your next tax return. so that means accepting a payment today might cut your refund if you're used to getting a refund around april 15th or increase the amount of tax you owe uncle sam if you're used to paying april 15th. >> it's going to depend on the situation for each family and their set of circumstances. >> some families might want to opt out. the irs has a tool to help families turn off the advanced payments.

"today in the bay" continues right now. >> good tuesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> marcus washington. >> we begin on the dry conditions not going anywhere any time soon in the bay area. the drought not getting better as we look into the holiday weekend. >> live team coverage on the impact of the lingering drought conditions from your pocketbook to your tap. let's start with meteorologist kari hall with a look at the dwindling water supply in our local reservoirs. it's concerning. >> yeah. it's not just the bay area but across the region where we're seeing this exceptional drought that continues to expand an we've seen the worst of it right here in the bay area.

with the lack of rainfall our reservoir levels continue to decrease. each day you think about just how much water evaporates off the surface of our reservoirs and we're only at 25% of capacity across our bay area reservoirs. some of the lowest water levels in the south bay. we are watching this closely with the high and dry weather that will continue. marcus and laura. i want to bring in "today in the bay's" cierra johnson. >> live in santa rosa this morning to take a look at some of the new water restrictions in place there and how it could eventually hit your wallet. >> reporter: yes, good morning, marcus and laura. kari mentioned the dry and hot conditions and santa rosa is not except from those conditions. today there is a vote that could change how folks here in the city of santa rosa use city cou for the meeting at noon in the .

to give you an idea of how they reach this point at the end of april the governor declared a local drought for sonoma county and the county declared a drought emergency. by may the city's water supplier filed a petition with the state asking to reduce how much water could be released from lake sonoma and lake mendocino, so this problem as you can see has been ongoing. as you can imagine it's not just the bay area experiencing a drought. nasa has released images showing how widespread the problem is throughout the state. between a below average snowpack and the persistence of the extreme heat you can see what scientists are calling bathroom rings or the white rings around some of the reservoirs in the photos. many of these reservoirs well below where they should be at this point. back out in santa rosa a big decision for those city council members that can not only impact how much water folks can use but

how much it will cost to use that money. if passed santa rosa could join several other bay area counties like marin and contra costa county and they have all taken similar actions. we will update you on what comes out of that vote as that vote takes place. live in santa rosa, cierra johnson for "today in the bay.." in south florida families holding on to the slimmest of hopes after the condo tower collapsed six days ago. searchers are still there trying to go on with the rescue mission and the recovery effort. the recovery of 11 victims has happened. 150 people now still unaccounted for at a beach side vigil last night, families were holding on to hope for loved ones that they will be found safe and the pain of not knowing for many really unbearable.

>> so we have people waiting and waiting and waiting for news that is excruciating. >> it will likely take time to learn the cause of that collapse but one expert voiced concerns about structural integrity as far back as 2018. any hope to find people in the rubble falls by the hour but there are some instances of people surviving while trapped for days. one person found alive after bangladesh factory collapse in 2013 and was trapped for 17 days. survivors of the quake in haiti were found after 12 days. one east bay county is unveiling a new way to keep track of its covid cases. the public health department will report case rates separately for vaccinated and unvaccinated people. it looks at the seven-day daily average case rate for 100,000 people. the data found the case rates are about ten times higher for unvaccinated which is the yellow line. as more people get vaccinated

the unvaccinated people are less likely to be exposed to someone who is infect. a live look in san francisco where some people there believe the quality of life in the city has declined during the pandemic. a poll which the san francisco chamber of commerce asked hundreds of residents about the economic and social impact from the pandemic. the so-called city beat poll found 70% believe the quality of life in the city has declined. 80% think crime has increased. nearly nine in ten say homelessness has worsened. happening today, just in time for summer, the oakland coliseum reopens to full capacity. the a's tonight are home against the texas rangers. this will be the first time since 2019 that the coliseum will be filled to 100% capacity. over the weekend against the giants, the a's took part in oracle park's first capacity crowds. this friday there will be a fireworks show that will happen at the coliseum following the game against the red sox. this morning we're hearing from the victim of a shark

attack off our coast over the weekend. nemanja spasojevic is continuing to recover after his encounter with a great white at montara beach. this is video of him in the hospital. he said it happened as he was diving for crab at gray whale cove. he's grateful for the numerous people who came to his rescue. >> i could feel a sharp mosquito bite like feeling and then a slight push and then as i look and grab my leg, i could see kind of like the shark from here like the nose and two eyes. >> to close for comfort there. the swimmer says he headed to shore as close to the rocks as possible. he managed to get a fisherman's attention who called 911. thanks to the quick response, he didn't have to spend even the night at the hospital. >> wow. >> i was amazed because he also thanked the shark for being so

gentle. mosquito bite. wow. you know what, glad he's okay and able to talk about it. it is 5:31. look at this, just look, a blanket of clouds there. this is fog, though. you can't see but this is the golden gate bridge. at least normally a shot of the golden gate bridge. look how beautiful that is as we start the morning. we know when we see that it's definitely cooler in san francisco this morning. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect through the bay area when it comes to those temperatures. kari. >> one thing i'm noticing from that shot you can see above the fog, which we cooperate yesterday, so that just shows that marine layer is compressing and pushing a little bit closer to some of the coastline and some of those areas, but not making it over the hills into the south bay and this is where those temperatures will be heating up today. let's go through the timeline and all of our temperatures across the bay area. stopping it right in the middle of the afternoon where our temperatures will really heat up

for the inland valleys into the low 90s, upper 90s for parts of the far north bay. much hotter today and then it will be cooling off as we go into the next couple days. so we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, what's the breaking news you're following now. >> this is for bart riders. a significant delay. bart calls a major delay, something more than 20 minutes out of the dublin station. over into the daly city direction, potentially an issue for the tracks. or at least on the tracks. i'm getting more detail from bart as best they update us. the light rail service canceled, the other red section here. we know that's not the news. major delay for bart out of the tri-valley. along 580 will be fine as your alternate. the drive is fine and no major surprises for 84. it's just the bart lines getting out of the area. the south bay slowing for 101, typical for san jose and the bigger slowing towards the venetia bridge. >> thanks so much. keep that mask on even if you're vaccinated.

more liberal plan, the one that they can pass without republican help, that has enraged the liberal part of his party. some in the democrat party think biden is too centrist and let him notice with a peaceful demonstration at the white house on monday. the house could vote to create an investigative commission on the capitol attack as soon as today that would be run by experts appointed by democrats. democrats did give republicans a chance to be part of a nonpartisan commission when they put that idea up for a vote last month, but republicans said no. speaker pelosi said if they didn't agree to a commission, democrats would go forward with their own investigation, a committee with subpoena power and witnesses testifying under oath. now there's hope that might bring republicans back to the table to approve a truly nonpartisan commission. maricopa county in arizona will throw out the voting machines touched by the

so-called cyber ninjas as part of their audit of the 2020 election. the county can't trust machines that have been out of their custody. the ninjas have been working to find proof that the 2020 presidential election was rigged in the county but the republican-led leadership there have dismissed the effort. at one point the ninjas were investigating paper ballots for remnants of bamboo which would show the ball lot were cast in asia and the president's trip to wisconsin today talking about it on twitter. find me there @scott mcgrew. one of governor newsom's leading opponents in the recall is making his way to the bay area. republican john cox is making a stop in san jose this morning. but now he is trading in that live bear for a pile of trash. california republicans are claiming democrats are acting unfairly in the governor's upcoming recall election. state lawmakers passed a bill yesterday that would move up the election by 30 days. that bill is now headed to newsom's desk for signature. democrats are hoping newsom would benefit from favorable conditions as california reopens from the pandemic. some claim it's considered cheating in the election. without the recall governor newsom would not have to face voters until 2022. are you feeling free without wearing that mask. the world health organization is giving new advice about that urging everyone to continue to mask up due to increased concerns about the delta variant. it's spreading throughout the world in places like russia, south africa, australia and israel. spreading in california among unvaccinated people, accounting for 20% of new cases. >> if you are unvaccinated you are confronting a virus better at its job than a year ago. >> infectious disease experts

gilroy reaching 94 today. we'll see some mid 90s for concord today, martinez reaching 93. freemont a high of 84 degrees. warmer than yesterday. we'll see low 60s in half moon bay, and redwood city we're up to 84 degrees. for san francisco, mostly 60s but with a little bit more sunshine downtown we'll reach up to 70 today. for the north bay it's going to be hot reaching 98 in ukiah and napa today looking at a high of 91 degrees. it's been all about the record heat we've seen across the pacific northwest. take a look at some of the high temperatures. we're looking at for today, 89 in seattle and that was after three straight days of setting triple-digit temperatures and in portland extremely hot, 96, couple degrees hotter in las vegas and reno today reaching 100 degrees. we're going to see that heat easing off for the pacific northwest and we're going to

5:56. welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." happening now, weakening tropical storm enrique taking aim at the resort area of mexico. the storm was downgraded from a category 1 hurricane as it skirted past the country's west coast. it's producing a lot of wind and up to a foot of rain. enrique is the first named storm this season in the eastern pacific. rescue teams are talking about the lengths they went to rescue sea turtles during the winter deep freeze that shut down most of texas. the group called sea turtle inc pulled a lot of those cold,

the company will have to stop advertising claims that its products are a safer alternative to cigarettes. at least nine other states including california have filed their own lawsuits against juul. california is adding five more states to its list of places banned for state funded travel that includes arkansas, florida, montana, north dakota because they passed laws discriminating against members of the lbgtq that includes blocking access to health care and banning transgender youth from sports. california will not fund travel, state employees, to a total of 17 states, see those states on your screen. the u.s. supreme court handing a victory to a transgender student banned from using the rest room of his choice. the court decided not to take up the case of gavin grim of have a yesterday. he was denied access to the boy's rest room by the county school board. at issue was whether federal
