>> i am laura garcia. we are expecting the new drought data numbers within the next hour. kari hall, these dry conditions making dangerous scenarios as we head into the fourth of july holiday. >> july 1st is the beginning of the water year. i want to show you how we left it, some of the rainfall deficits over 20 inches for santa rosa, and oakland almost 11 inches. san francisco, almost 14 inches of a rainfall deficit. they are only measuring five inches of rain in livermore as well as san jose. when we look at this and how it compares to normal, we only made about a quarter of our normal amount of rainfall last water year, so today we get the drought data coming out and i will have that update coming up later. >> thank you so much, kari. the fourth of july, not just about barbecue and beach time. firefighters are also getting

ready for what may be a busy weekend, and given the dry conditions, they are asking everybody to ditch the fireworks. kris sanchez is live for us in san jose. this is where important training takes place today, kris. >> reporter: yeah, there's a two-day live wildfire training happening for firefighters so they can make sure they are ready for whatever happens this weekend. take a look at what happens down in los angeles this is related to illegal fireworks. the explosion happened as the lapd bomb squad was trying to detonate 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks, and all 17 people were injured in that. back here in the bay area in contra costa county, investors

seized fireworks. five miles of grizzly peak boulevard will be closed to all but residents between 5:00 in the morning on sunday, the fourth of july, and 6:00 in the morning monday. >> reporter: 19,500 fires were sparked by fireworks in 2018, and is that the recent information we have, so it's clearly a danger. cal fire got into a partnership with cal fire to crack down on fireworks as well. >> thanks so much, chris. first lady now on their way to the site of the deadly surfside

progress on the dow. the real story is the s&p 500. instead of looking at the daily numbers. so far in 2021, the nasdaq is up 12.5%. the dow just a little bit more ar's day. these would be phenomenal numbers over the course of a year, much less six months. we will get first-time jobless claims soon, and there are shortages, high prices, and jobs are out there, maybe not jobs people want but there are a lot of people desperate for workers, and more than 13 million jobs posted right now have been a vacant for a month on average. ford will briefly suspend the production of the bronco because they are running shorts on the parts to make it. this is not due to a chip shortage which caused other cars to slow down or stop production.

temperatures and clouds to start out the morning. all the drizzle you are seeing right now with gradually start to clear up as we head into later today. temperatures going from the upper 50s was head out the door to low 60s by lunchtime and eventually making it into the low 70s. 7-day forecast, not a whole lot of changes here weather-wise as we go into the next several days. we are looking at mostly 70s for the south bay and low 80s for the south county. this is like it was yesterday, reaching into the mid-80s for much of the east bay. for san francisco, expect highs in the mid-60s this afternoon, and our north bay temperatures in the upper 70s in mill valley, but still going to be hot in ukiah, reach into the mid-90s. our weather pattern continues with this strong area of high pressure that is pumping in monsoonal moisture. we're still looking at that

chance into the next couple of days that there may be some dry lightning, and that's lightning without the rain and that could spark new fires, and that's what caused the fire we are seeing over mt. shasta right now. looking at the temperatures here for the weekend, still pretty nice. for the july fourth weekend, still warm weather while san francisco will reach into the upper 60s. now as we turn toward our climate in crisis, we are looking at the historic heat that hit parts of the pacific northwest, and this is also what caused temperatures in british columbia and canada to hit 121 degrees. that was the hottest temperature ever recorded in this area and the region is still having a lasting impact from that. just a small village, and they had some of the areasworld-wide

president trump himself. >> that's exactly right, at least not so far. it's impossible for us to know what is happening on the grand jury level, but you have his company, the company he's in charge of, under investigation. his cfo's book keep is under indictment. it's our understanding that trump's cfo, allen weisselberg, turned himself in. somebody was able to snap a picture. we do have that. we are not sure what charges he faces. he will appear in court later today in new york city. several news agencies say it has to do with taxes and whether or not he paid income tax as some of the perks he got. you do have to pay taxes as a car, and not paying it could lead to criminal charges, but

this is a pretty thin gruel. it's also reported that weisselberg has not been helping prosecutors as they chase after bigger charges against bigger people, and prosecutions are sometimes used as an incentive. we are waiting to hear if there are any indictments as to whether the trump organization. inflating value, deflating when it comes to taxes. "the new york times" was the first to investigate that, and then trump's own former lawyer testified about that under oath and said it was true. and he -- we are waiting for a statement from the trump

organization. new evacuations under way as crews in northern california battle three growing wildfires. the largest is the lava fire near mt. shasta. so far it burned nearly 18,000 acres since last week. the fire was sparked by lightning. in the meantime about 25 miles from there, the tenant fire, more than 8,000 acres, and the salt fire started just yesterday. that new video of the fire battle going on north of redding, that is set to be growing quickly with all of the dry trees out there. >> yeah, and all of the smoke from the wildfire affecting us in the bay area. >> you may be anyone to smell a little of that especially in the east bay and parts of the north bay, and you can see the bright

colors where the source of the fires are and where that smoke travels due to our wind pattern we are seeing right now. even into tomorrow a lot of the smoke in the upper levels of the atmosphere stays away from the bay area, and as we bring it down to the surface, we are also seeing some of the smoke traveling away from the bay area, so near the surface we are looking pretty good. you may smell that a little bit as it gets drawn into our marine layer especially in the morning hours, and it should improve as we go in to later today, and looking at the surface air quality, today it's expected to be pretty good but it could all change in the next few days if we get new fires started closer to the bay area. we will continue to monitor that. >> thank you. pg&e makes a new request to hike your monthly bills to help adntion costs. the utility asking pg&e to

approve $3.6 billion in hikes. it would increase $36 per month, and the commission does not approve request all or nothing, so it could approve a lower hike. starting today, anybody that loses their home in a wildfire will have access to a more assistance. that's one of a new handful of new laws taking affect today. move us forward on some of the new rules and regulations that we have to get used to. >> reporter: yeah, today is july 1st. as you mentioned, it's the start of several new bills go into effect, and it's just so pertinent to those living here in the state of california and in the bay area. starting today, parts of two laws officially go into effect and they are both designed to

help homeowners that lose property in wildfires. one of the laws, assembly bill 3012 would afire an additional living expense covered for two weeks. in addition to wildfires, it's something else we have been talking about a lot here in the state of california, gun laws, the state also passed legislation extending the limit on purchasing more than one handgun in a 30-day period to include some rifles that meet the definition of a sight rifle. and then a new law known as laura's law will allow the courts to obtain outpatient treatment for individuals with mental illness that may be a danger to themselves or others.

they are now required to hold public hearings at the board of supervisors about whether to opt in or opt out using that assisted outpatient history. if a county decides not to participate, to opt out, they would have to provide a specific reason. this bill would repeal any expiration of laura's law, and we're talking mental health and gun control and a little more incentive, a little more money for those that lose property in wildfires. this is statewide. we're live in san francisco. >> thank you so much, cierra. we have the full list on our website, just head over to nbcbayarea.com. and then a man killed on

us? >> yeah, we get the update every thursday and we just got the update showing that there's no change, that we are still looking at one-third of california in the highest level of the drought. it's very widespread across the region, anywhere west of the rockies. we are all lacking this water. as we get a look at some of the areas hardest hit by the drought, it's the north bay, parts of the east bay, and we will have more details on this and how much rain we need to catch up to normal coming up at 6:00. right now as we look at our temperatures for today, heading up to 83 degrees in east san jose. it will be like yesterday with a nice breeze picking up and a lot of sunshine for the afternoon hours. and one thing that fog is provide something slightly lower fire index as we have seen the humidity pushing inland. we're looking at still a lot of

a little build. the peninsula completely clear. you are at speed there. and then this is westbound 24 around st. stevens, that's where a disabled vehicle is reported in lanes but have not seen slowing over the last five minutes ago. and earlier in the show we talked about the grizzly peaks closure, and it's where people like to go to view the fireworks, but it's restricted access in the area so note that will be the case for 24 hours through july fourth. here in the north bay, here's the crash -- highway 12 may be closed, so keep that in mind, it's a local road that takes you the long way around and there's a crash with injuries that will affect highway 12. and it's showing minimum slowing coming out of vallejo. here's the golden gate bridge.
