see if folks are heading out of town for the holiday weekend, but what about the forecast if you're staying here. let's check in with kari. >> looks pretty good for us and we've enjoyed some nice weather especially for the inner bay and some of our inland valleyses. heading to work we are going to start out with temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s in freemont and gradually clears out today. slow warmup in our temperatures, 71 degrees at noon, headed towards mid 70s. you can see the range in temperatures across the bay area so whatever you've experienced the past few days is what you'll see into the weekend. we'll talk more about that coming up a little bit later. laura and marcus. live look across the bay area and if you're lucky, you've already gotten a head start on your holiday travel plans. it may be one of the busiest travel weekends ever as people make their way to cancel the fourth of july plans from last year. at the pump. >> yes, good morning, marcus. a lot of folks playing catch-up from the last fourth of july. we're still working but a lot of folks have hit the road. we're at the airport yesterday and folks were heading out, a lot of folks heading to hawaii and other destinations to see family but today we're really focusing on the road and how much you can expect to pay at the pump. we'll get to the gas prices in just a second but let's talk about how many people are expected to travel this holiday season. according to aaa 47.7 are traveling for the holiday and 43 million expected to take the roads. they're telling us travel between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. today is expected to be the worst time to be on the roads. the best time, still have a little time to get on the roads is before noon. let's talk about what everyone is talking about those gas prices. aaa says gas prices this weekend are expected to be the most

expensive since 2014. national average as it stands $3.12. little different from that california average, that's $4.28. the same in san francisco, oakland a little higher at 4:36 -- 4.36. the holiday weekend is already adding a little bit of insult to injury when it comes to already rising gas prices. take a listen. >> i should be investing in that electric car i guess. for now, gas prices are too high, you know, for us in california. especially here in the bay area, i think the bay area in san francisco has the highest in the whole country. >> reporter: and it is important to note that on top of the holiday and the rise in gas prices folks already paying a little more at the pump because july 1st, that gas tax increase, went into effect. right now california drivers are paying 51 cents in gas taxes.

news. two u.s. senior officials confirm to nbc news that the u.s. troops have now left bag ram air field that signal the end of the presence at afghanistan's largest air field. it was frequently used to launch air strikes against the taliban in the 20 year long war. president biden promised troops would be out of the country by september 11th and the base handed over to afghan defense ministry. a bombshell announcement by the city manager of vallejo, he is stepping down. the city council accepted his resignation last night during a closed session. he leaves city hall with a severance package of $577,000. his abrupt departure comes with the city embroiled in multiple controversies, that includes multiple whistleblower lawsuits alleging he fired various city hall workers and retaliated for his reporting alleged misdeeds. a live look in oakland, some

transit milestones to tell you about this morning. oakland leaders are celebrating a record amount of street paving for one fiscal year thanks partially to voter approved funding. to celebrate that bart meantime pushing up its return to full service and plans to relaunch limited late night trains two weeks from today. starting july 15th. last trains will run at 11:30 thursday through saturday night, two weeks after that the late night service moves to every day but sunday. bart plans to expand the service at the end of august. happening now, firefighters in the thick of it battling three wildfires north of the bay area. the largest is that fire we've been telling you about near mount shasta. evacuations are still in place for thousands. it's burned 20,000 acres since last week and in this case, lightning is the cause. it's approaching 30% containment. the tenant fire started this week in the clam matt national forest and burned nearly 10,000

acres about 5% contained. the salt fire near redding has burned over 4,000 acres with zero containment. very concerning. definitely the concern over the weekend as we quickly approach what could be still yet a dry weekend out there. meteorologist kari hall monitoring those temperatures for us. kari, how are things looking for us right now? >> well, we do have to be really careful this weekend and we're looking at those large fires to the north and to the south of the bay area and as of right now, the smoke may cause a brownish tint to the sky. our computer models showing some of that smoke moving in, but it is in the upper levels of the atmosphere and hasn't yet began to affect our air quality. near the surface it's looking pretty good as that smoke drifts away from much of our area towards the east. if there is a new fire that gets going closer to the bay area our air quality will be affected. but once again we are in with some westerly winds that's

pushing that smoke off towards the east. we'll be watching the air quality as well as our temperatures that will continue in the same pattern we've seen from the past few days. more on that coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> mild as we expect light volume because we are just before the holiday weekend for many around the bay and around the bay you're looking at a pretty smooth drive. one incident that popped up over near the mazes west 580 on to 980. not the most heavily used portion of our commute and especially right now, but still a disabled vehicle reported there and there may be another disabled vehicle closer to that bay bridge berkeley curve. we'll let you know. there was an earlier incident here, westbound 80, through san pablo, no lanes blocked from what i understand. back to you. coming up, there's now one less place you can find oscar winner gwyneth paltrow's products. what we know about the shutdown right here on nbc bay area. a further look at that jobs number which is now 20 minutes

these temperatures across the bay area, upper 90s to the north, antioch reaching 93 degrees. tired of the weather, may be a good weekend to take a road trip. we'll talk more about this and our fourth of july forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> pick the temperature you like. looking over here pick this roadway, 101, moving smoothly through palo alto. we have an incident on the peninsula. we'll let you know what's going on in daly city coming up. happy friday to you as well. we're going to get the big jobs report in about 15 minutes, showing how many jobs were created in the month of june as well as the unemployment rate. now the job creation numbers the most important. we are expecting good news, numbers in the area of 700,000, but the real spike as alice was talking about earlier should come in september as the kids go back to school because that solves one of the barriers to people returning to work which is child care.

we normal think of jobs numbers people getting back to work because new jobs were created, the economy is growing. the thing is, the jobs are out there already. it's that people aren't taking them. yet. a big victory for treasury secretary janet yellen, 130 countries have signed on to her plan for a global minimum tax. we don't know what tax is going to be yet, but the idea is american companies can't park their money in a low tax country to avoid american taxes. we've talked about apple work from home but how about apple stores work from home. they're going to give it a try, giving apple store is clerks a chance to do things like tech support from home a few days a week. they call it retail flex. here's pictures from an attorney representing a tesla owner who says his burst into flames couldn't get out at first because the electronic doors wouldn't let him. this happened in pennsylvania. the plaid that he was driving was less than a few days old,

>> just outbid by $50. >> so close. i would have contributed to that one even. >> help with the 50. >> all right. kari, let's get a look at the forecast. we're moving into an extended weekend for some folks, certainly dry out there. got to take it easy when it comes to the barbecues even. >> yes, we do. we've had a wide range in temperatures so if you're, you know, calling up a friend and it's been cool and foggy there and they are tired of it, invite them over for the weekend. a live look in dublin, we're going to see the cloudy skies sticking with us a little while longer and the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. we're getting ready for the a's game tonight and as we go through the forecast for this evening, we have some upper 60s there. nice and sunny but the clouds will be rolling in and possibly blocking the view of some of the fireworks for tonight. may not be that low for the east

bay but as we get a look at our temperatures across the bay area, morgan hill at 3:00 reaching into the mid 80s while san jose in the upper 70s and san mateo we're at about 69 degrees and 80 in novato, concord 83 degrees. fog keeping us cool near the coastline, mist and drizzle and settle in and provide a westerly wind for the bay area keeping some of us very comfortable into much of the weekend. no change in our weather pattern but the question is, will it be foggy for the fireworks. we're going hour by hour looking at our forecast and you can see the fog starting to roll down the peninsula and moving closer to some of those areas into parts of the south bay and east bay, but it's going to be foggy near the coast and at times misting and drizzling those very low clouds, may keep us from really seeing those fireworks in san francisco. i think an inland area would be a better bet.

our forecast for the next several days, not too many changes here. our inland valleys low to mid 80s, temperatures 50s, san francisco will have upper 60s as we go into the next several days into early next week. >> what are you seeing for the commute? >> also pretty settled. things will get more crowded but midday folks will make a getaway out of town. up through sunol, maybe 1:30, things start to slow out of the south bay. right now we're looking at 280, southbound, at westboro through daly city, a crash reported there. don't know about lanes. no slowing shows up there. and the surface streets you see all the green sense sensors an easy light drive. that's why on this friday we don't have the backup at the bay bridge and we may not have much if we have metering lights at all, friday before a three-day weekend for many businesses so we should see the light drive out of antioch.

5:24. we're getting a look inside the homes damaged around the site of a fireworks explosion in los angeles. you can see right here, the damage left behind extensive with glass and debris everywhere. police allowing some people to go through their homes to get the essential belongings. yesterday police arrested a man accused of bringing 5,000 pounds of fireworks that led to that blast. that bomb squad tried to detonate less than ten pounds of the explosives inside of the

armored truck but the force of the blast destroyed the truck, damaged several cars and homes and left 17 hurt. investigators are working to figure out what went wrong. searchers are looking for survivors in the condo collapse. concerns about the segment still standing but now talk of demolishing it. rescue operations resumed when engineers determined the standing part of the complex is still structurally sound. the mayor of surfside says it will be slower going until seems can demolish it. 18 victims have been recovered and 140 are still missing. for some of our nbc bay area viewers it has been a lucrative start to the summer. >> it has. that's because they contacted our response team for help with their consumer problem. consumer investigator chris chmura is here with their payday. >> reporter: good morning. we want to spotlight two cases that together put more than $25,000 back where it belonged.

weekend that's coming up a little bit later. laura and marcus. >> thanks. a's fans everywhere may have to scramble if they want to enjoy tonight's postgame fireworks show. the team blaming bart for the headaches. >> those aren't the only fireworks to see over the weekend. kris sanchez is live at the bart station. what's the upshot with tonight's fireworks show, kris? >> reporter: you know, this was the first season where a's fans could take bart to san jose from the oakland coliseum and that was exciting tonight because the a's are hosting the show after their game with the red sox. the problem is that bart says they cannot run translate enough to get the fans after that game. fireworks, the a's stopped ticket sales at 30,000 rather than the sellout they were expect pg. bart says late night service is resuming but in two weeks and for now they just don't have that staff to keep the trains going that late.

fans should plan to be on the platforms by 10:10. quite a few bay area communities are bringing back big professional fireworks shows this one including the big one along the embarcadero, the biggest in the bay area. the concord pavilion hosting a drive-in event on sunday. cal america will set off fireworks at the end of the night. gilroy is hosting fireworks at the high school, morgan hill is lighting up the sky above the outdoor sports complex and the san jose giants are showing the movie "the sand lot" with a fireworks show to follow. now, these are professional events and you're encouraged to enjoy the fireworks that way, but you should not set off your own fireworks because that is illegal and in our drought conditions very dangerous and it could be very costly because if you're busted a lot of communities have upped their fines in the city of san jose first offense is $1,000. it goes up for every other by

three years to prevent people from gathering and setting off fireworks. one year after the shooting death of a 6-year-old boy police are saying they're still searching for one of the suspects. police made one arrest about six months after the death of jace young, who was shot by a stray bullet in the bayview district. police say a second suspect identified as 18-year-old deshaune lumpkin was never arrested. police are asking him to turn himself in. if you see him police warn he could be considered armed and dangerous. shocking new numbers this morning on a big increase in homicides here in california. the final tally for last year saw the number of homicides jump 31% over 2019 the deadliest since 2007. it amounted to more than 2200 homicides statewide while african-americans make up only about 7% of the population they accounted 31% of total deaths. 45% of the victims were latino and 16% white.

now to a plea this morning from sleigh's police chief. he's asking for more cameras to crack down on crime. it comes following two recent shootings in a two-hour period wednesday night. an 8-year-old and young woman now recovering as a result of one of those incidents. vallejo has 20 cameras around the city to capture license plate numbers on cars. it's a tool police say could help fight crime. >> any detective division would depend on an investigative lead from a vehicle description, license plate number, most of the crimes that are commit ready done so inside a vehicle. >> vallejo's police chief is pushing for the city to buy up to 80 cameras in high crime areas. a proposal set to go before the city council at the end of the month. new details berkeley firefighters will now be able to tap into new funding to boost wildfire prevention. the new budget approved this week includes $13 million in

voter funds for emergency preparedness. more than 5 million is going to the fire department for safety and fund larger training facility and ambulances. they're moving forward with closing one of their vaccination sites after four months and 100,000 vaccinations later, vaccinations later, golden gate field vaccination site is closing. health leaders say operations will move to the west berkeley site on san pablo avenue. 67% in berkeley over the age of 12 are vaccinated and nearly 80% have received their first shot. a mendocino cafe that gained national attention for no mask rules is closing. you may recall the cafe with the signs posted charging commerce e who wore face coverings a $5 fee. "the chronicle" reports the landlords for the property changed and asked the owner to comply with government mandates and not post the sign. he refused. the landlords claimed they faced harassment from the decision

since that cafe has closed down. now the owner will serve his last lunch sunday. this morning america gains 50 new citizens just in time to celebrate the birth of our nation. alameda mayor is expected to naturalize those men and women on deck of the "uss hornet" a carrier built in part by immigrants. it gets under way at 10:00 this morning. fleet week is returning to san francisco this year. a lot of people missed it during the pandemic when it was in full force last year. mayor london breed announcing it will start october 3rd by the end of that week you can expect the blue angels to be flying high in the skies again. the exact schedule of the events is still a work in progress. we'll keep tabs on that. right now, right here right now, weekend weather. >> oh, yes. it's the holiday weekend and it is time to have some fun. kari, will the weather play a role in that?

a good one anyway. >> we'll have all kinds of weather across our reej and plan to hit the road going to yosemite this weekend looks good for today but then by tomorrow, there may be fireworks of a different sort. some thunderstorms and we're going to see that chance tomorrow but it does look good for the fourth of july with our temperatures there reaching into the upper -- low 80s there. now take a look at what we're expecting near that wildfire so this may not be the best place to visit right now. shasta trinity national forest with the temperatures reaching into the triple digits and a lot of smoke drift big that area. then for the santa cruz beach boardwalk, maybe you'll see those temperatures in the low 70s for today and upper 60s throughout much of the weekend. there will be at times some patchy fog, so just watch out for those low clouds that will be rolling through. for san francisco, i know that people want to have a clear view

of the fireworks. at this point it doesn't look like it's going to happen. there will be fog rolling in and it's not really clearing out very much with temperatures in the low 60s. pleasant hill going to have event going on all day. it's going to be a fun day with the temperatures in the middle of the afternoon for the daytime events in the mid 80s. fireworks start late in the evening at 9:15. then it looks clear and temperatures at about 66 degrees and we're also going to have some fireworks for the south bay at california's great america and there it does look like the weather is going to cooperate as well. we'll be watching all of those events and, of course, we have the full wrap-up at nbcbayarea.com. we're looking at a smooth drive as we expect before the holiday weekend afternoon. midday, afternoon, early evening we're going to get more crowded as folks try to make their way to many of the spots that you outlined. right now getting over should be no problem except for the waking up thing. over towards the altamont pass, traffic starting to wake up, from green to yellow, a tad bit

where oftentimes most days we'll talk about the first [ inaudible ] of slowing. we'll show how the rest of the bay is playing out for this morning's commute. the boy scouts of america reaching a settlement for compensating tens of thousands of sexual abuse claims. the bankrupt nonprofit faces hundreds of lawsuits and professional claims. the settlement amounts to $850 million, but plaintiffs attorneys are seeking more. the number of claims are said to be near 90,000, though it's likely it will be closer to 80,000 once all vetted. experts says the amount would provide about $10,000 per claimant everything else being equal. a mystery surrounding the death of a professor whose body was found last week at yosemite. authorities are still not indicating how he died but hoping someone may have seen him hours prior to his death. james youngblom who taught

biological science at stanislaus state was found june 25th. anyone who may have noticed him in the area around white wolf, or grand canyon, should call the national park service investigators. president biden's plan to get american troops out of afghanistan took a major step forward this week. scott mcgrew, the air base now in the hands of afghans themselves. >> hundreds of thousands of troops have either served at bag gram or pass through during the longest war in the history. the big thing will be helping afghanistans who helped us working at the base and translator, serving alongside u.s. troops, lines and lines of people frantically applying for visas. we're leaving with the hope that afghan government is friendly to us and friendly to these folks and that it will stay in power, but likely not.

gets actually helps governor newsom with votes. >> sacramento this week approved speeding up the process, recalled supporters called that a manipulative move but say they are ready to mobilize. once you get that ballot in the mail, you have to fill out two sections. in the first part you will be asked if governor newsom should be removed from office. it's a yes or no question. in the second part you pick a replacement candidate. you can vote no to the question of removing the governor from office, but still select a replacement candidate in case the governor is recalled. 5:48. this fourth of july south bay tradition will be brought back, though might look a little different this year. >> the rose white and blue parade is on for sunday but instead of winding through san jose's rose garden neighborhood like it has done in the past with participants they'll set up along the alameda at shasta avenue. >> we've invited so many of the participants who were in the parade to actually be at the

morning because we've started out with our cooling clouds, out the door for work this morning, checking out san jose as we are at 60 degrees and we'll see a clearing out by about 9:00 and then the rest of the day is sunny as our temperatures warm up towards the upper 70s today. it just is going to be a beautiful day. as our temperatures warm up we'll reach into the upper 70s, breezy and sunny, might prefer cooler temperatures go out early in the morning. our microclimates there has been a wide range in temperatures if you've been stuck with the fog and drizzle for the past few days, maybe drive a few miles where you can get some sunshine and warmer air, we'll see some highs in the upper 70s in mountain view today, livermore reaching 84 today, and 74 at 3:00 in napa. ukiah is going to be sizzling in

the upper 90s there and novato at 80 degrees. most of us drop back to the 50s tonight and back into the 60s and 70s for the inner bay and mid 80s for much of the inland areas, except for the far north. taking a look at our overall weather pattern we've seen high pressure over the desert southwest. that's not moving as well as this low off the coast. that low is giving us a westerly wind pushing in the marine layer and the bay area cool and also helping to improve our air quality. keeping the smoke away from the bay area. as we go into next week looking at more of the same, highs for the fourth of july weekend reaching into the low 80s for many spots and then it just warms up slowly going towards the middle to end of next week. for san francisco, not seeing any changes here and not going to shake that fog. it's going to be in the mid 60s into the weekend as well as early next week and we've got
