♪♪ good morning. it is sunday. 7:00 a.m. on the dot. cloudy skies and palm trees in downtown san jose. happy fourth of july. i'm kara clapper. vianey arana is here, even though you were up to 11:30 last night doing the weather. lots of fog, right? >> yeah, the fog, and this is pretty normal for some, but it's not what we want to see for fireworks, right? in san jose, 59 degrees. plenty of sunshine inland areas,

nothing to worry about there when it comes to viewing. but if you notice the fog in san francisco, it's really hanging out. it hasn't gone anywhere. 60 degrees right now. look at the temperature trend. a mix of sun and clouds but i would not call it a sunny sunday. definitely expecting to see that marine layer. look at this. a chance for drizzle. making its move in again tonight, but at least the temperatures are pretty comfortable. near seasonable. i'll talk everything about -- well, i'll talk all about the dry conditions as well, coming up in just a minute, kira. >> you were up late. thanks so much. fireworks safety is a top concern every fourth of july, but especially this year, we're in a drought. concerns of illegal fireworks sparking fires is a huge threat. so firefighters and police officers are on special patrols who are setting off illegal 11

allow safe and sane fireworks. in contra costa county, all fireworks are illegal. a countywide ordinance banning are the sale and use but clearly people are still using them. that's why fire marshal and inspectors with the power to give people tickets are stepping up the patrols this holiday weekend. >> tonight, we have all of our investigators. calling them back. we've up-staffed extra personnel. we have a task force that we've put together. >> fire crews were called out to respond to a small fire last night. it is inspected to be have ignited by fireworks, coco to w citations for people setting off illegal fireworks. the biggest is the danger posed for the fire that spreads. >> even the safe and sane

fireworks which are illegal in contra costa county, how they can spread from a sparkler. >> people can be fined up to $5,000 depending onpeople ownine they're set off can both be held responsible. all counties are urging you to report illegal fireworks use. 833-855-2001. we did have a look at some of our traffic cameras from last night showing fireworks just lighting up across the bay area. this is what we saw over san jose. you can see fireworks there, some people telling nbc bay area they've been hearing them for weeks. the fireworks aren't anything new to the view, especially during the fourth of july, karmin and calvin have made it their tradition to have dinner at grandview restaurant on independence weekend. >> it was kind of like our fir sees, f of fireworks in general because, to me, it disturbs life and nature. just like the animals. >> reporter: the same goes for bertha fernandez and hits a little too close to home. >> behind our house, there is an empty lot. it's dry grass. and they throw those cherry bombs and bottle rockets. and i'm scared that the house is going to catch on fire. we have the water hose. >> reporter: this year, bertha is particularly scared of the dry conditions and the widespread harm that illegal fireworks can do, so, she's say staying home. >> my grandsons are in the

service, air force and army. hey, there's another way, we're not supposed to be doing fireworks, so please don't do it. >> reporter: fireworks are illegal in san jose. and in most bay area cities. >> used for storage of rk -- >> reporter: there are tip line the fireworks keep coming. be "today in the bay." >> here are just a few of the legal fireworks shows coming back this year as we move forward from the pandemic. san francisco embarcadero water front show starts around 9:15. that's the biggest display this weekend. the concord pavilion is hosting a drive-in event, gates open at 7:00, fireworks after dark. tickets are $25 per car. california's great america will set off fireworks around 8:45. gilroy high school will have the fireworks show around 9:30. and morgan hills freedom fest has events all day culminating with fireworks at 9:45.

some local cities do allow safe and sane fireworks. only about 11 cities out of the hundreds of cities across the bay area allow them. this is a map where they are allowed. in the north bay, dixon, culverville, in the event way, gilroy and in pacificicic and san bruno, safe and sane fireworks vendors were busy as soon as they opened at 10:00 a.m. they tell nbc bay area they intend to sell out today. safe and sane fireworks, by the way, are the type that don't leave the ground and don't shoot into the sky. we're learning more information about that massive sapphire would explosion in los angeles. federal agents have arrested a man for bringing 32,000 pounds of fireworks across the border from nevada. police have said it was 5,000

pounds at their first estimate. they discovered the fireworks wednesday and were able to remove most of them. as you just saw there, the bomb squad tried to detonate less than ten pounds inside an armored truck. the force of that blast destroyed the truck damaged several cars and homes, 17 people were hurt. court documents say the man responsible didn't have a license and used a rental truck to drive the fireworks t in his. back here locally as mentioned, san francisco's water front fireworks show is back this year, after being cancelled last year because the pandemic. restaurants and shops along the water front are expecting big crowds all day today. people are excited to watch the show. and the people creating the show are thrilled to be back in business. >> to have not had the opportunity to do that for a year and a half, you know, that's very hard on fireworks people. so, we're very, very, very happy

barbados and the dominican republic yesterday. it's now headed towards cuba and florida. and speaking of florida, this is a live look for you right now in south florida, where crews are getting ready to demolish what's left of that condo tower that collapsed last week. before elsa's strong winds potentially knock it down. with the demolition today, crews can ensure a safe and controlled fall that will preserve their ability to find the victims who are still missing. authorities are expected to raze the rest of the building beginning today. it will take about 36 hours. meanwhile, we're learning six rescue workers helping to recover victims have tested positive for covid-19. now they're undergoing contact tracing. this is yet another setback for families of those missing still clinging to the hope of a miracle survival story. >> as a family member with loved ones still missing, how do you

we are back with the video you may have seen all over social media. greenpeace and other environmental activists are blasting mexico's state-owned company, oil company, after this, a ruptured undersea gas pipeline sent flames boiling to

the surface of the ocean in the gulf of mexico. you can see fire control boats on the left there, pumping water over the flames. this happened friday. about 150 yards from a drilling platform. mexico'sstate-owned oil company said it got the gas leak under control within five hours, but the extent of the damage remains to be seen. now for the record-breaking holiday weekend for travelers. a live look for you this morning. after more than a year of being cooped up at home, millions of americans are hitting the road for fourth of july festivities. this is sfo for you. those gatherings are producing renewed concerns, though, as covid's delta variant keeps spreading. nbc's quadports. >> reporter: already breaking records. >> we didn't expect it this

north bay. and now police are trying to figure out if it's the same one from this video earlier this week. holy-moley, can you imagine if that was at your house. this mountain lion was seen early wednesday morning. this is at a home a few blocks from downtown petaluma. the one spotted yesterday morning was on the other side of 101, close to the dmv. you're urged to call police. another smoke flames to the north where three fires destroyed homes and are threatening hundreds more. the largest one is being called the lava fire. it's burned 25,000 acres. it's 36% contained. the tenant fire is burning and 10,000 acres, 26% contained. and the salt fire burning in shasta county 25 miles north of redding. authorities are looking for a car that may have sparked the

flames on interstate 5 on wednesday afternoon. 7:16, time to check in with vianey arana. it sounds like the typical fourth of july in san francisco where the fog and clouds kind of. >>. you don't really see the fireworks. >> yeah, i mean, i wish there was a moment where it was like perfectly clear, and they could really start the fireworks show. you know. >> yeah. >> that marine layer has been holding on top in san jose, about 59 degrees. and we are getting sunshine in the south bay, but it will be a little more to clear for the coast. look at the temperature trend, by 12:00, we'll be in the 70s. and let's take a look at san francisco. because right now we're at 60 degrees. notice in the icons, the fog doesn't really go anywhere. it stays pretty cloudy overall. so we are going to notice. take a look at the hour-by- cha.

up at the time stamp, in the corner, you can kind of see what's happening here with the cloud cover. drizzle at times, cloud early. and it's going to be mild when it comes to the temperatures. now look what happens when i stop for the time line, right up here, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, and 9:00. look at what's hanging, santa rosa, san francisco. and oakland and hayward, probably also going to be experiencing some of those cloudy overcast skies into the afternoon. let's take a look at the microclimate highs. enjoining a seasonable day for temperature information the 60s for oakland. 70s for oakland and palo alto, san jose, 81 degrees. concord, 83. livermore, 84. upper 70s in the north bay. enjoy the upper 70s and 80s because we do have a bit of a

warming trend on the way. i'll get to that in a second. we'll turn your attention to the winds. you know there's dry out there, you don't need to be a pro to know that, you can look up at the hills and see how brown they are. that's because we haven't had any rain. put that with wind and that can really turn into a dangerous situation. as a reminder, we have not seen any rain. the drought monitor still remains unchanged. remaining in the exceptional category for much of the northern portion of the bay ware, movado and oakland. and 100% of the bay area is under pretty severe on exceptional drought. take a look at this. we do have high pressure that's going to start to roll in. when that does happen we're going to see a bump once again in the temperatures. and the concern anytime high pressure moves is how conditions begin to dry out which lowers the humidity. pair that up with warm

temperatures and now you're getting the perfect mix for an unfortunate situation when it comes to fires. let's get to your climate, this has to do with something you probably have lying around your house, more than one, actually, take a look. >> you probably had this happen to you, you're watching tv and you're thinking why would the volume go up. the remote needs new batteries. i counted ten things throughout my apartment that needed batteries. and those can't be good for the planet. >> and they're not, the state of california estimates americans throw away 4 billion batteries each year. when they're not disposed of properly, batteries contribute to water and air pollution. that's becau made of heavy metal and chemicals. and the chemicals soak into the soil that can contaminate the ground water. and if they catch fire, that releases toxic chemicals into the air that can impact our breathing and contribute to global warming.

good morning. it is sunday, the fourth of july. good morning to walnut creek. but it looks beautiful, dramatic, going over there. 7:29 right now on this fourth of july. thank you so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper, vianey arana joins us with a quick look at your micro climate forecast. a lot of people are seeing that type of thing? >> yeah. it looks like it's going to linger around for the majority of the day. so depending on where you live and where you're headed is dependent on whether or not you'll see fireworks. i've been hearing, bink is not a fan, please be mindful of your pets. we don't want to see lost dogs out there. they do end up in the shelter. that number tends to go up around the fourth of july because people forget to bring their pets indoors. 69 in san francisco. 60s in the interior valley.

and east bay city has a big show planned for tonight for the fourth of july. it's not fireworks lighting up the night sky. it's an uniquest year, the so-c man as he's known of martinez, he flew them on the fourth of july since there weren't any official fireworks show because of the pandemic. but the response was huge. so, the city of martinez asked him to return this year, because of the drought, the city wanted a safe way for families to celebrate that didn't involve fireworks. you can catch tonight's show at the martinez marina. that is very cool. 7:40. still to come on "today in the bay," check your freezer. coming up at 7:45, a major tyson recall that could hinder your fourth of july meals.

and it's certainly a cloudy start yet again. 60 degrees right now but how pretty is the fog. it's pretty during the day, but we don't want to see it tonight. that's the question that a lot of people are wondering because the fireworks show. i'll get to that in a second, 59 degrees right now in san jose. i do want to show you how the current temperatures are looking throughout the entire bay area, as you head out the door, notice we're pretty comfortable overall, not too cold. not too hot. right in the middle, mild 50s and 60s. but let's take a look at how the rest of the nation is doing. it's fourth of july after all. we're expecting 70ss. in el paso, 80 degrees. i used to work there. and in boston, 63 degrees i used to work there also. and just wanted to let you see how everyone else is enjoying

their fourth of july. the hour by hour, here it is, mat marine layer has stayed all night long and will continue to stay here with us along with a chance for drizzle. you might have seen it this morning already. cloudy inland. what are we expecting around 8:00, 9:00, that's when the fireworks shows are going to start. well, unfortunately, look what happens, around that time, san francisco, half moon bay, even through oakland and hayward, we do see the fog. not much for the coast, but inland, you'll have a better chance of viewing fireworks like concord, livermore, san jose. morgan hills. of course, let the pros do that. we're looking out for winds, right, heading into monday, expect light breeze your winds for san francisco. 23 miles per hour. and it is still fairly dry out there. we haven't really had a chance to catch up, when it comes to

8.5 million pounds of ready to eat chicken because of listeria concerns. the company is calling frozen fully cooked chicken may 2020 and april 13th of this year. all of the products have the number estp 7089 on the bag. the food safety and inspection service says it was made aware of two people with listeria early last month. an investigation revealed three cases including one death. the most recent effort to recall governor gavin newsom from office has now been assigned an election date. september 14th, a special statewide election will decide tvernor. larry gerston joins us. hi, larry. remind house how we arrived here. it seems like it's been going on

for a long time. >> it has. newsom has had a lot of enemies. ever since the date he took office people have been after him. most of these are what people would call outliers, the anti-vax movement. anti-public education movement. people who feel the governor is too tough on gun control. people that don't like the state what we had with mexico. all of these things, together, with some others have generated a lot of hostility. and, of course, launched the recall. but really, it wasn't until, it wasn't until covid that seemed to get a lot more people involved. and that had to do with the judge extending that deadline. >> so, what ended up happening to get to this point? how did the recall proponents manage to collect all of those voter signatures? they needed something like close to 1.5 million, something like

that? >> you're right. let's start with the last point, that four-month deadline the judge gave, because of covid. the petitioners went to him and said, look, we're trying to sign up people, but we can't get to them because they're all, you know, at home. and so the judge gave them that unprecedented four-month extension. so they went from 180 days to like 300 days. it was unbelievable. by the way that day, november 6th, was the day of the french laundry. the same date they got that extension. how ironic. and, of course, that's the second choice. newsom stepped on himself more than once in the late fall and that got a lot of people upset. and finally, we want to think about the fact that newsom had a record here of closing down the state, reopening the state. closing it begin. reopening it again. closing it a third time. and now reopening it again. that got a lot of people upset. where are we going? put it all together and you've got that recall petition validated last april 29th.

>> okay. but june 15th, the state essentially reopened, so does that impact how the governor looks now to voters? or are you able to kind of gauge how he looks to voters? >> you know, there's some good news for the governor. even though he had all of those problems early on, look, we know that the pandemic has gone away. and, of course, that's had a lot to do with his popularity going up. take a look. in january, only 22% thought he was handling covid-19 well. now, it's more than double. 45%. gives him a good or excellent grade. where does the change come from, look at the no opinion at the bottom. they've all gone over to newsom. at least most of them, along with a few others from the very poor category. all of th look is, when you ask people, how do you feel about the election? what's the story? are you anxious to be part of

san jose is once again the favorite. he'll be trying for his 14th title in 15 years. the women's event starts at 8:30 this morning. about a half hour from now. and vianey has one last look at the forecast for this fourth of july. >> it doesn't look like the fog is going to cooperate, unfortunately, for the san francisco fireworks this afternoon, we're expected to have cloudy conditions pretty much all day. we will get clearing in the inland area, temperatures around the 60s along the way and coast. 70s inland. and sunshine in south bay as well. san jose, 81 degrees. concord, 83. and we're seeing breezy conditions around the coastline. if you have plans to head to the beach, we're definitely seeing cloud cover. it's really dry out there, right now in the extended outlook forecast, it does look like we're going to keep the dry conditions not just for today, but really, we're going to start to warm up into next week. back into the 90s as high
