going in. vianey we're seeing later this week. if you enjoy the 70s and 80s, but don't enjoy the 90s, take advantage of the next couple days. san francisco at 60 degrees and anywhere the past few days. temperaturesble for the most pa. 60 in san jose and the cloud cover early on in the day and eventually by 9:00, 10:00 a.m. we get good clearing in inland areas. similar to what we saw this past weekend. breezy winds around the coastline in through the east bay as well. more about what to expect heading into the work week ahead coming up in a few minutes. back to you. >> thanks. breaking news in the north bay, police are investigating an apparent shooting in santa rosa.

this is new video of the scene on beachwood near greenwood drive. one witness tells us people were watching illegal fireworks when a car pulled up and opened fire on the crowd. one witness who lives nearby said someone in the crowd returned fire. the witness says that several get them. e more breaking news, fireworks allegedly stop fire crews were called in. not far from the coliseum. witness" tell us fireworks sparked a small fire on the roof that spread quickly. firefighters are on the scene looking for hot spots. to contra costa county, this is video from ross circle west of 068, one of many places firefighters responded last night. this is one of multiple incidents where possible fireworks were involved.

contra costa county responded to 48 grass and exterior fires yesterday. the five-structure fires across the district, that's actually a 20 to 40% reduction from last fourth of july. all firework in contra costa county are illegal. "today in the bay's" tom jensen continues our coverage on the busy night for first responders. >> reporter: it's become an annual headache for the protection district. fireworks bursting in air, even though they're illegal here and can spark a grass fire in an instant. >> come on, get out. >> reporter: sometimes structure fires too. fire destroyed part of a hercules home and fireworks are considered a possible cause. >> what culminates tonight is the simultaneous use of illegal fireworks brought out that causes multiple ins dmentsz our county. >> reporter: fireworks caused dozens of fires in 2019 and 2020. and once again, this year, more

illegal fireworks and more fires. resources get stretched thin. n those incidents at the same time. >> reporter: in alameda county, fireworks are legal. in dublin the city sets aside seve light fireworks on the fourth of july. >> i think it's fantastic, the year we've had, people need an outlet and a safe one, right. >> reporter: the rivera family wonders if contra costa county communities should do the same thing. >> create an outlet. >> it's fun to watch kids like yeah. >> have a good time for sure. >> reporter: something contra costa county officials would never do. >> that would bring risk to our county. >> reporter: firefighters know the night is not over and likely respond to more fires before sunrise and hoping cooler temperatures and higher humidity will reduce the spread of fires that do start. in contra costa county, tom jensen, nbc bay area news.

check out san francisco's fire department twitter page. you can see right here showing just how busy firefighters were responding to seven reported fires within just 15 minutes last night. it's not clear they were all firework related. police in newark made efforts to get some of the explosives off the street ahead of fourth of july. police say they managed to seize 600 pounds as part of -- while conducting a crackdown last week. $33,000 in cash. two men were reportedly selling the fireworks out of their van and both face up to a year in jail. we're learning new details about a spike in arson in the bay area. new crime data showing nearly 2,000 incidents last year, up 37% from the year before. majority happened in alameda county which saw 495 arsons in 2020 followed by santa clara and san francisco counties. and that threat of fire

sparked by the fireworks is kind of a scary thing. it's been a little cooler lately, but hopefully stays that way so we can reduce that risk of fire. >> whenever we see hot temperatures, wind and low humidity when people get on high alert. once you see just how dry it is out there, we are under an exceptional drought. i think people need to, you know, kind of pay attention to what's going on in the hills by looking up and noticing how brown the hills are. that threat for fire danger unfortunately will continue until we get some rain, which right now it's not looking too good. temperatures in the 50s and 60s down through the south bay as you head out the door. we have that cloud cover hanging out around the coastline but what can we expect for this afternoon. well, it's going to be pretty mildghout. we're going to be in the upper 60s for san francisco, a couple of upper 70s in the south bay and san jose through los gatos, 84 and then we do have a couple upper 80s in areas through the

those 80s for inland areas. a mild monday ahead. enjoy, we have a warming trend in store. we'l of your tri-valley drive times, westbound 580 to 680, 17 minutes. 580 to vargas road 10 minutes, westbound to 680, 7 minutes. traffic report in a little bit. the condo building in surfside, florida, no longer standing. video of crews demolishing the remaining section of the building last night. the concern was that the winds from tropical storm elsa would bring the building down. >> here's a live look at the site now. the major is promising the search for remains will continue as soon as engineers deem the collapse site stable. jennifer johnson has the latest building has been demolished.

good morning, san raphael. a live look this morning as we get started with your day. a few cars there on the road. we said last week, where are these people going. >> really. >> who knows. be safe. but, you know, we're going to look at that traffic coming up in a bit. first we want to talk about that forecast and very foggy last night in san francisco. >> yeah. so i want to know if you went out to the firework shows in san francisco specifically and you managed to get a picture, send it to me. did you get sleep last night? >> no. >> i saw some of the fireworks coming, i was in vallejo coming

down on 80 and i could see fireworks all over. >> yeah. bings wasn't happy but once he got in between my boyfriend and i on the bed, we're good, it's my dog, by the way. >> if you didn't know. >> that real quick. we are going to be seeing the fog again this morning. the marine layer is very typical for the summertime in san francisco. you know, we enjoy it because it helps keep our temperatures cool, mother nature's ac. it did definitely block the view for the fireworks last night. temperatures as you head out the door, we're in the 50s and 60s to start, so not really temperature change. a huge change here, but what you caense fog up through the north bay, portions of san carlos, half moon bay. notice how it's managed to make its way inland as well. in livermore right now we're seeing a lot of fog.

please be careful out there. remember don'ts use your high beams. use your regular headlights to get you through the fog. mild temperatures ahead today topping out in the upper 70s. a couple of mid 80s through los gatos. some of the warmer spots fairfield 87. not too bad there. i do want to show you the hour by hour outlook. if you live right up here that' with this marine layer hanging out all the way from ukiah down to half moon bay, we do see some drizzle at times so if you wake up this morning you live around the coastline and you see that on your windshield. that's why. the marine clearing, but mainly inland. just looking out ahead we have a lot of warming. we're going to be seeing that high pressure make its r to the bay area and that's going to bump up our temperatures. we keep that marine layer over the next couple hours and just into the evening hours as well. long-range outlook. we have this big "h" here.

that's the high pressure i was talking about. it's going to start to really heat things up, especially for the inland areas heading into the upcoming weekend. friday, saturday, sunday, get ready for 90s in the forecast as we head in towards the weekend, so sort of keep that in mind as we make plans. good beach day for sure is going to be saturday and sunday. san francisco, temperatures you're also going to notice the warming here. take a look at this, 60s through about thursday and then look what happens heading into friday, saturday, sunday. things bump up into the upper 70s, which is pretty warm for san francisco. i mean when you factor in the ten-degree difference you will be able to feel it. upper 90s, we could be seeing dangerous heat so definitely monitoring that very closely. let's get a check of traffic and where these people are going. it doesn't look like they're going too many places. the drive times are fantastic. usually we start to see a slowing, especially through the tri-valley because of westbound 580, a ton of construction there

from grant line to 680. we're looking at 17 minutes. that number is usually 25 or 30. i don't think you have to take the coffee on the road. enjoy a cup of coffee and stay spending the fourth of july weekend on the frontlines fighting three large fires way north of the north bay area. the biggest right now is still active lava fire. it has burned nearly 25,000 acres near mount shasta close to the california/oregon border. many of the thousands forced to evacuate are back inside. some were still forced to spend the holiday weekend out of their holes due to fire danger. now crews say that fire is about 52% contained. meanwhile, the salt fire has destroyed 41 buildings, including 27 homes north of redding and burned nearly 10,000 acres and about 15% contained. and the tenant fire in clam meth national forest has burned five buildings, 10,000 acres and

withdrawing the last troops from afghanistan after nearly 20 years of war. >> as that happens the taliban is moving in to take over military posts from afghan troops. nbc's richard engel reports from kabul. >> reporter: the taliban aren't even waiting for u.s. troops to finish their withdraw from afghanistan before launching their takeover. emboldened and increasingly confident the taliban have taken around 150 afghan military posts in the last two months, dozen this weekend. afghan forces trained and supported by the u.s. military, are in many cases giving up without a fight. are taking the weapons, keeping some, and selling others to pakistan, according to afghan officials. this video taken by witnesses, the event confirmed shows local villagers moving in to loot a base for anything the taliban left behind. but one unit that hasn't been

collapsing is the afghan commandos. elite special forces trained by american special forces. they're launching around 100 operations a day, shouldering about 90% of the fight. this morning, i spoke to their commander. >> if americans will keep supporting us financially and the way we want our armed troops for the future and our afghan air force, of course, we can fight. >> reporter: there's a troubling development. the united states invaded afghanistan after osama bin lauden and camps in the country and launched 9/11. according to multiple afghan officials, foreign islamic radicals are rushing back to afghanistan so they can witness what they're calling the final victory, the withdrawal of u.s. troops pushed out, they say, by the taliban. the foreign and al qaeda

fighters entering this country are coming in through pakistan, according to afghan officials. it's the same route they took before 9/11. richard engel, nbc news, kabul. new details this morning about money going to protect sea turtles and marin mammal wildlife. this is from swordfishing gear. state leaders are committing this year. that money will go to a voluntary buyback program aimed at getting fishermen to switch from nylon nets to bayou gear. critics say this will put some out of business. coming up on "today in the bay," a warning this may be too much if you're eating breakfast right now, but san jose's own joey chestnut has done it again. why this latest feat at the nathan's famed hot dog eating contest is another one for the record books. the number of dogs that pushed him over the edge. tested positive for covid.

now to new video this morning of a mama bear and her cub doing what many did over the fourth of july weekend. they hit the water. this happened friday at a home in glendale not too far from the los angeles national forest. the bears reportedly stayed for about ten minutes before wandering off. bear sightings aren't unusual in

communities near the forest but usually happen at night. this morning, joey chestnut celebrating and probably recovering. >> the pride of vallejo and san jose state the big dog at nathan's annual hot dog eating contest yesterday. joey devoured 76 hot dogs in ten minutes breaking his own world record by one. he beat his nearest competitor by 26 dogs. it's the 14th time he's won the title in the past 15 years. kelly wong of oakland representing the east bay competed and finished eighth eating nine and a half. the winner for the women was michelle lesco, she ate 30. >> i like how you said joey jaws, that should be his something we can talk about. >> we have to let him know. you know what it is, it's the dipping in the water. i think that's what throws me off. i'm like -- but talent.
