that's exactly what we're going to see. 59 in walnut creek. by 11:00, 12:00, and 1:00, so your lunch hour, we're going to be in the 70s for walnut creek, but i do once to give you a look ahead at how your headlines will be doing this morning. today we're going to see comfortable temperatures and looking out ahead, we've got hot 90ss in the forecast. i'll go into more detail on what that means in terms of extreme fire danger and, of course, a look at your search-day outlook in a few minutes. breaking news, fire crews in oakland racing to the scene of a warehouse that went up in flames overnight. "today in the bay's" pete suratos live this morning and pete, there have been some warning signs before this fire even started. this is all associated with illegal fireworks. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, marcus. some witnesses in the area are saying this warehouse fire may have been caused by fireworks. oakland fire says the fire was

contained to just this warehouse. i'm going to show you some video from the scene. officials say that it also started around 12:30 a.m. on the 900 block of 77th avenue in oakland. that it started in the roof area of that warehouse. witnesses are saying folks were lighting fireworks in that area for hours before the fire and, in fact, they say they saw firework debris coming down. business owner who is a tenant in the -- at that warehouse says fireworks may have caused a fire saying some of the equipment and wood on his roof combined with the firework debris may have fueled that fire. here's what oakland fire officials told our camera crews at the scene this morning. >> approximately 45 to 50 firefighters were on scene. they're still putting, you know, tremendous amount of water on the fire. we have gone defensive at this point. >> reporter: now there was some fire exposure to other buildings in the area, but no reported

damgs at this time. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. reporting live, pete suratos, for "today in the bay." >> thank you. illegal fireworks are putting firefighters across the bay area on alert this morning. our cameras across the bay area captured fourth of july revelers out in full force overnight. but with those beautiful displays come a lot of danger. kris sanchez is live. good morning, kris. >> reporter: we heard lots of fireworks through the night last night and this morning as i was driving to this location in san jose, i heard folks setting off fireworks despite the fact that the firefighters urged in the days leading up to the fourth of july to leave it to the professionals. this was the view from sky ranger over the east bay. this is the hayward area. and you can see it looked like there were fireworks about every few blocks that kept fireworks there and around the bay busy through the night. the fire district responded to

48 grass fires and five structure fires, fewer than last year. along the hillside west of 680. a home also burned. in the city of san jose, firefighters were bracing for firework-related fires too. >> we saw unprecedented firework use in our community. we had tracked about 54 fireworks related fires in 2020 during our fourth of july reporting period and that really stretched our resources to the max. >> reporter: cal fire put out this tweet saying they put out three vegetation fires and one structure fire within just one hour's time. busy for them as well. firefighters told us that they hope that these cooler conditions we're enjoying this morning, the higher humidity might make their fire fight a little easier if folks keep sparking fires with fireworks. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, chris.

we're going to stay in contra costa county, new video shows firefighters working to put out a brush fire there. this is the so-called kirker fire which broke out around 1:00 yesterday afternoon between clayton and pittsburgh. cal fire says that this was sparked by a car fire. it took several hours before but fire crews gained the upper hand. they are in the area monitoring those hot spots. 35 acres have burned. in our nation's capital, a spectacular display above lincoln memorial. the national park service launched fireworks from both sides of the reflecting pool for a 17-minute show last night. the president and the first lady watched that fireworks show from the white house. you can see them on that balcony applauding the show's grand finale last night. earlier in the day, the president hosted first responders and military families at the white house thanking them for their service and their hard work during the pandemic. both the president and the first lady shook a lot of hands, talking with families who

gator -- gathered. but the event had fun moments as well like this one, huge puppets of past presidents dressed in washington national jerseys posed with the president and ran a race. as you see right here. lot of big heads. >> high knees. >> you got to get the high knees when your head is that big. >> the first lady helping to hold the finish line. the event was held directly after the president's fourth of july address to the nation in which he celebrated the recovery from covid but urged more americans to get vaccinated. >> this is the most patriotic thing you can do, so please, if you haven't gotten vaccinated do it, do it now. for yourself, for your loved ones, for your community, and for your country. >> the president also touched on topics from voting rights, climate change and justice to the economy.

meantime the vice president spent part of her fourth of july holiday thanking los angeles firefighters. vp kamala harris posted these pictures of she and her husband stopping by a fire station. she thanked the firefighters for their service to the community and to the country and wished everyone a happy fourth. >> here at home, those who smartly chose to watch the fireworks in a safe and legal way. in san francisco there's a ton of anticipation for the return of that big waterfront display. >> it was fantastic. this was the first time that we are seeing the fireworks over here in the u.s., and it's been so good. >> because of the pandemic, san francisco had to cancel the annual fireworks display last year and because of the concerns of fires across california this year, new laws banning fireworks in much of the bay area, fire authorities have been pleading with people not to set them off at home. the only issues, the chill and

fog in the air, but those in attendance made the best of it. >> it's beautiful. the weather is not too bad and i'm surprised how many people are actually here. >> kind of forced me in to buying myself this fleece. wasn't expecting to need it. got so cold, i went up there and bought one from a gentleman. >> maritime park was packed during last night's display but only took about 20 minutes for folks there to clear out. >> glad they had a good time. now to the pandemic we're moving you forward as more covid-19 restrictions start to ease across the bay area. here's a live look at san francisco and starting tomorrow, no more masks at city hall. face coverings will no longer be required for fully vaccinated visitors that falls in alignment with updated state guidelines. city hall officials say anyone can continue to wear their masks for added protection. now to our climate in

crisis, marin county water restrictions could get tougher. the water board is proposing additional conservation measures. the ordinance is expected to be approved at a meeting tomorrow night. new restrictions would include using sprinklers one day a week, drip irrigation would be limited to two days a week and customers would be discouraged from planting anything new. the past 18 months have been the driest on record for the marine water district. not getting a lot of it in the bay area. >> we're not. we're getting a little bit of drizzle around the coastline and that's about it. i mean, you know, we're officially in the start of summer. i wish i could say we are -- i almost fell. short people problems, standing on a box. we do have some hot temperatures on the way, 70s and 80s. let's get right to a look at the marine layer bringing drizzle around the coastline. san francisco, visibility about

ten miles, half moon bay down to about six miles. and even in through areas like san jose and also down through morgan hill you can see some of the fog. that has made its way inland as well. let's take a look at a quick glance of your temperatures. in livermore this is going to be one of our hotter spots for today. expect it to climb into the upper 80s and if you look at the temperature trend you can clearly see how quickly it warms up compared to areas like san jose, or oakland. we're going to be in the 80s by your lunch hour by about 1:00. let's get a glance at your traffic. things have still managed to remain pretty quiet overall down through the south bay. no issues. up along the peninsula as well. let's get a look at your tri-valley drive times because right around this hour this tends to build more heading into the 6:30 hour. we see typically a lot of traffic. not today. holiday light traffic westbound 580 to grant road, from 580 to

good morning. 6:14. we've got the cloud cover, cool for sure, even not just through the inland areas but we've got a couple changes on the way. things are expecting to heat up so i'll have a closer look at your seven-day forecast and what to expect coming up in a few minutes. let's get a quick check of traffic and look at the bridge drive times. westbound 80 towards the bay bridge. nonexistent traffic. holiday lights eight minutes. no metering lights on at the bay bridge toll plaza. the vatican says pope francis is doing well following intestinal surgery. the pope delivered his customary sunday blessing to the faithful

in st. peter's square and a short time later underwent that procedure. the 84-year-old pontiff responded well to the operation performed at a hospital in rome. barring any complications he is expected to remain in the hospital for the next seven days. today the dawn of a new era with amazon with jeff bezos stepping down as chief executive officer. he will assume the role of executive chairman. andy jassy is taking over for bezos. he was formerly the head of amazon web services. bezos is the richest person worth more than $197 billion. >> since talking about billionaires, facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg, like many of us yesterday taking part in fourth of july celebrations. >> it was the whacky way he chose to recognize america's birthday that's getting attention on social media this morning.

that guy that said he had to buy a sweater. you have to wear layers in san francisco. coming in from the south/southeast at about 8 miles per hour. take a look at your afternoon highs. notice the range in temperatures. this is the beauty of your microclimates. 60s around the coast and 70s in the east bay. meanwhile upper 80s in inland areas. the mild temperatures will be lingering. this marine layer bringing that drizzle is going to hang out all day long. we're not going to get much sunshine in san francisco. notice by about 5:00 i pushed the timeline forward into this evening. we remain pretty cloudy around the coastline. if you're heading to the beach it is going to be a little breezy as well. clearing inland. and then i'm pushing the timeline forward through tonight into tomorrow. expect to see that drizzle yet again early tomorrow morning and that's as much precipitation as we're going to get for the next couple days because our next change is going to be impacting

next weekend's plans in a pretty big way. in addition to being really hot we have to consider the elevated fire danger that's going to come from this high pressure system. what tends to happen overnight we like to see a nice recovery. anything above 30%. the winds start to dry us out and that creates an elevated outlook on what to expect over the next seven days. a look at the seven-day forecast for san francisco. upper 60s to wednesday and thursday. then we get a lot of sunshine so if you haven't been enjoying the cloud cover around the coast, guess what. we get sunshine on friday, temperatures in the 70s. and then this is what i was talking about when i'm mentioning extreme heat and dangerous heat. look at next weekend, upper 90s, triple digits, maybe record highs in the forecast. now let's get a check of your traffic commute and see how that's doing. this is the easiest traffic report i've done. i don't want to jinx it.

morning from the weekend crews are paying customers. happening now, the oakland zoo is vaccinating its big cats, bears and ferrets against covid-19. the vaccinations are part of the national effort to protect animal species using an experimental vaccine developed and donate bade new jersey company. this is new video from the twitter page. none of the animals at the oakland zoo have gotten the virus. staff have used barriers and protective gear to protect the animals. they started inoculating primates in january after a covid-19 outbreak among a troupe of gorillas. students work to rebound following a tough year, a state law is offering hope to help them make up for that lost learning. under the new bill signed into law last week, students have a number of options to make up for the 2020 school year. among those choices, retaking a grade level, changing low grades to pass, or enrolling a fifth year of high school for juniors

and seniors. state data shows that this last pandemic school year resulted in significant loss for many students across california. new details this morning about money going to protect sea turtles and marine mammal wildlife from swordfishing gear. state leaders, they have committed $1.3 million as part of this year's budget. according to the chronicle that money will go to a voluntary buyback program aimed at getting fishermen to switch from the nylon nets to deep set buoy gear aimed at preventing entanglement. critics say that move will put some fishermen out of business. to new video this morning of a mama bear and her cub doing what many did over the fourth of july weekend. they hit the water. this happened friday at a home in glendale, not far from the angeles national forest. the bears reportedly stayed about ten minutes before wandering off. bear sightings aren't unusual in communities near the forest, but they usually happen at night. >> you can tell they were having a lot of fun too.

but it is new for you this morning. groovg into the forecast, because it is kind of nice. >> it's monday. not everybody likes monday. monday is usually my day off so i'm a fan personally of mondays and tuesdays, but even when i have to work i'm still a fan. i hang out with you guys. current temperatures 50s and 60s across the board and it is mild, but take a look at how we're going to shape out this afternoon. we're going to be in the 70s for areas along the peninsula. heading up to the north bay for anything, wine tasting, santa rosa will be at about 80 degrees. napa 77. definitely a lot warmer through ukiah, in the 90s today. so we've got a good range of temperatures there. this is sort of a preview but we're going to get hotter and a full forecast in a few minutes. breaking news in the north bay, police are investigating an apparent shooting in santa rosa. now this is new video of the scene on beachwood drive, that's near greenwood drive. one witness tells us people were watching illegal fireworks when

a car pulled up and opened fire on that crowd. the witness who lives nearby says someone in the crowd returned fire. the witness says several people were shot. we're reaching out to police and we have not heard back yet. breaking news, fireworks allegedly sparking a warehouse fire in oakland this morning and naibsz are saying they are not surprised this happened. "today in the bay" pete suratos is live with new video from overnight and the information from witnesses there. >> reporter: good morning. the witnesses are saying this may have been caused by fireworks but oakland fire says the fire was contained to just this warehouse. we'll show our viewers some of the video from the scene that took place roughly around 12:30 a.m. at the 900 block of 77th avenue in oakland not far from the oakland coliseum. it started in the roof area the

fireworks could be dangerous where we are. in alameda county there was a different strategy there in dublin, several parks were designated for supervised activity with the blessing of the fire department. >> i think it's fantastic especially the year we've had, people need an outlet and a safe one, right. >> reporter: so this was the view from nbc bay area sky ranger over the east bay in the hayward area and that kept a lot of firefighters there and around the bay area bus busy through the night. contra costa county fire district responded to 48 grass fires and structure fires, less activity than last year, but this was the fire along the hillside west of 680, one of ten that firefighters say might be related to fireworks. cal fire put out a tweet as well saying that they put out three vegetation fires and one structure fire within one hour's time. a lot of fines have gone up so if you still have fireworks i would advise you not to set them

off. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> not cheap at all. thank you. more details now, check out san francisco fire's twitter feed showing how busy firefighters were responding to seven reported fires within just 15 minutes last night. it's not clear if these were related to fireworks. police in newark made an effort to get the explosives off the streets ahead of the fourth of july. police say they managed to seize 600 pounds conducting a crackdown last week and also confiscated about $33,000 in cash. two men were reportedly selling the fireworks out of their van. both face up to a year in jail. we're learning new information about a spike in arson in the bay area. new crime data from the california department of justice showing nearly 2,000 incidents last year, up 37% from the year before. majority happened in alameda county which saw 495 arsons in 2020, that followed by santa clara and san francisco counties.

to the pandemic, the highly infectious delta variant is becoming the most dominant covid-19 strain in the state. according to state data it accounted for nearly 36% of cases in june, a big increase from may when it accounted for nearly 6% of cases. experts say that pfizer and moderna vaccines have proven highly effective against the delta variant. also johnson & johnson said its single-dose vaccine provides a strong immune response against the strain with higher vaccination rates that leaves many in the bay area protected. this morning, the condo building in surfside, florida, no longer standing. here's video of crews demolishing the remaining section of that collapsed building last night. the concern was that those winds from tropical storm elsa would bring the rest of that building down. the death toll standing at 24, with 121 still missing. here's a live look at that site

this morning. the mayor of miami-dade county promising the search for remains will continue as engineers deem the collapse site stable. officials say the demolition will increase their chances of finding more remains. >> bringing down this building in a controlled manner is critical to expanding our scope of the search and rescue effort. and allowing us to explore the area closest to the building, which has currently not been accessible to our first responders. >> and now at least six rescuers have tested positive for covid-19. complications really creating a difficult situation, making it even more. strong winds are what officials in florida are afraid would have brought down that building had they not demoed it. happening now, tropical storm elsa's winds are whipping trees and churning surf off cuba's coast. the storm is expected to move across the island and head toward the florida straits and part of florida's southwest

coast, which is now under a tropical storm watch. it's always worrisome when going across the water if that water is warm enough where the trouble comes. >> indeed. that's one of the major driving forces of an intensifying hurricane. in addition to that, there's always that threat of a storm surge, right. so depending on how much water actually flows, the winds right now gusting 60 plus miles per hour, one of their biggest concerns. we'll be monitoring that closely here. microclimate highs locally we're going to enjoy mild temperatures, valleys in the 70s and 80s, and we will be breezy at times. i want to take you through some of those wind gusts. notice in the time stamp right here, 20 mile per hour winds typical for san francisco, but then we've got a couple other spots through oakland, livermore, concord. if you live in redwood city, san jose, not going to feel the impact of those winds or up to santa rosa and the napa area as well. it's going to be san francisco, get a little breeze through oakland, as well as livermore

area. definitely going to look out for that into the afternoon. but you know what else we're going to be seeing heading into the later portion of the week, an increase in temperatures and when you pair that up with winds that's when we start to see a major concern when it comes to elevated fire dangers. i will get to that. let's get a check of your traffic and see how that's doing. we've been pretty quiet on this chp traffic report where i get my information. showing things are looking pretty good, no major accidents to report so let's get a check of those tri-valley drive times. this is one of our hot spots usually, around 6:39, the traffic really starts to build here, but, of course, a lot of people are not working today and that is helping our drive times. westbound 580 from grant line road to 680, six minutes, 680 to 580 ten minutes and westbound 84 to 680, only 7 minutes. a closer look at your seven-day outlook in a few minutes. this morning, a major test

lava fire, so far burned nearly 25,000 acres near mount shasta. many of the thousands forced to evacuate are back inside, but some were still forced to spend the holiday weekend out of their homes due to that fire danger. crews say that fire is 52% contained. the salt fire has destroyed 41 buildings, near redding. it's only about 15% contained. and the tenant fire in klamath national forest has burned five buildings so far. it has burned more than 10,000 acres and currently stands at 33% contained. new details the united states withdrawing the last of its troops from afghanistan after nearly 20 years of war. >> as that happens the taliban is moving in to take over military posts from afghan troops. nbc's richard engel reports from kabul. >> reporter: the taliban aren't

we're going to be seeing sunshine clearing in through the afternoon. looking out ahead your headlines for the day. what we're expecting, the hot 90s. that's not a typo. high pressure that's going to roll in and change the game for us completely. right now, temperatures in the 50s and 60s. we've got a nice onshore flow that has managed to keep us seasonable and cool for this time of year and summer. the marine layer has been hanging out tough. we've got a little bit of drizzle around the coastline and in through some of the interior valleys as well. 60s and 70s and also 80s for the afternoon, so really the valleys will see breezy conditions at times. let's take a look at wind gust and direction forecasts. the primary winds, between 15, 25 mile per hour winds. if you live through the south bay and the north bay, not really going to get those gusty conditions for this afternoon. but, looking out ahead at the long range outlook, a couple things i want to take you through today because these are

going to be important. when you see high pressure rolling in we like to associate high pressure with happy weather because it brings sunshine. but another thing that high pressure brings are dry conditions and hot temperatures, but also, fire concerns because we are still under a serious drought. 100% of the bay area remains under an extreme drought and if you notice these darker areas right up here, the dark maroon color including napa through oakland, under that exceptional category. that means we had a pretty sad rain [ inaudible ]. i want to show you the reservoir levels. we have depleted our sierra snowpack which accounts for 30% of california's water supply. that doesn't mean we're going to run completely out of water. whatever snow was up there in terms of being measured is now melted. so 55.8% of historical average when it comes to our reservoirs. if you've ever driven near the reservoir right near the gilroy area, take a look at the dry

welcome back. before you head out the door the top stories we're following on "today in the bay." >> that's right. breaking news, the north bay police are investigating an apparent shooting in santa rosa. this is new video of that scene on beachwood drive. that's near greenwood drive. one witness tells us people were watching illegal fireworks when a car pulled up, opened fire on the crowd. that witness says someone in the crowd then returned fire. the witness says several people were shot. we've reached out to santa rosa police and have not heard back yet. we'll bring you the updates as we receive them. more breaking news, fire crews in oakland racing to the scene of a warehouse that went up in flames. pete suratos is live for us and pete, there have been warning signs before this fire even started associated with illegal fireworks. >> yeah. that's right. that's at least what we're hearing from witnesses. we know that oakland fire says the warehouse fire was contained

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in silicon valley with that part of the story. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, cierra. firefighters leading up to the fourth of july urged people not to can get involved with illegal fireworks and yet there was a lot of fire activity related to illegal fireworks overnight. the beau from nbc bay area sky ranger over the east bay and it kept firefighters busy there around the bay area and the area of hayward looked like there was fireworks every couple blocks or so. contra costa county fire district responded to 48 grass fires and five structure fires, fewer than last year, but still enough to stretch resources. the fire along the hillside west of 680 in martinez was just one of ten that that department believes may be related to fireworks. cal fire put out a tweet saying they put out three vegetation and one structure fire within one hour's time. the national safety council says
