much of it tied to elsa, the dangerous tropical storm making its way toward florida as we speak. we'll take you live to the keys and dylan will have the full forecast and that storm is coming amid the busy post holiday rush. tens of millions now returning home after celebrating the fourth a live look right now at the airport in charlotte international, one of many struggling to keep up with large crowds we're going to have everything you need to know before you head out. but we begin with what remained of that collapsed condo in south florida, coming down in a controlled explosion late last night. but rescue crews are still working at the scene in surfside with more than 120 people still unaccounted for 12 days later. we're going to talk to the mayor live in just a moment, but first, vaughn hilliard joins us with the very latest vaughn, good morning >> reporter: good morning, craig and sheinelle. the families of those 121 unaccounted for individuals awaited that implosion
7:04 am
anxiously, concerned about the impact it would have on the search for their loved ones. but just this morning, those search crews are already back in the rubble overnight, the partially collapsed condo in surfside demolished, officials pausing search efforts for the implosion as 121 people remain unaccounted for. the demolition earlier than expected, officials saying the fallout would be controlled and rescue efforts had previously been paused due to fears that the remaining structure would collapse on the rubble as tropical storm elsa barrels towards florida's coast. afterwards, surrounding streets filling with dust and debris, nearby residents told to shelter in place ahead of the blast. >> this is really just a continuation of the tragedy. unfortunately, this is something that has to be done. >> reporter: rescuers immediately returning to the scene following the blast. >> bringing the building down in a controlled manner is critical to expanding our scope of

tropical storm, is expected to descend here on surfside later this morning with wind gusts and rain expected to be here within hours. >> vaughn, thank you joining us now, the mayor of miami dade county, mayor daniella levine cava morning to you >> good morning. thank you for covering this tragic tale. >> of course madam mayor, 12 days later and you guys are still calling it a search-and-rescue operation. the building was demolished overnight. by calling it a search and rescue operation at this point, does that give false hope to family and friends would everyone be better served by not referring to this as a recovery operation at this point? >> we brought down this last tower in a controlled way that did not in any way interfere with the site where we're searching. and, in fact, it opened up an area that we've not been able to search before.
7:07 am
so we owe it to all of those waiting to give this pile -- open it up for search and that's exactly what happened. last night before midnight, they were out there again searching in the rubble. and we understand that families realize the fact that time has gone by. they realize that the chances are growing dimmer and dimmer. they are with us they know exactly what we're doing every step of the way. >> did the building implode the way it was supposed to the demolition there was just so hard to watch. what are you telling the families were they supportive >> yes, thes families were they supportive >> yes these families have really come to understand and trust what we're doing. we've talked to them about every single step. we've talked to them before they spoke to the public and the media. they have asked all their questions. experts have been brought in to explain every piece of it. and, by the way, this happened
7:08 am
exactly as it was planned to happen, perfectly. >> what's next, madam mayor? i know the rescue operations are continuing today, that tropical storm now barreling toward the coast. where do you go from here? >> fortunately, the storm seems to be heading westward so we're not expecting to have a major impact from the storm. obviously, we have had to prepare and, of course, the building came down in time so we're going to continue the search we're continuing our twice-daily briefings with the families, and we are going to do everything in our power to continue to search. >> and, mayor, there are families who frankly had to leave all of their possessions behind, literally. >> yes >> is there anything being done to help all of these families? there are so many now who don't have anything. >> yes we have had an incredible outpouring of support.

best of luck to you. mayor daniella levine cava let's focus more on elsa as the tropical system works towards south florida. it cuts a path of destruction through the caribbean. we'll get to dylan's forecast in a moment, but first, nbc's sam brock joins us from key west, where people are racing to prepare. sam, good morning. >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning. elsa has already conflicted considerable damage in the caribbean, loss of life, as well, as it has fluctuated between hurricane category 1 status and a tropical storm. at least three people have died so far, two in the dominican republic, one in st. lucia as the system barrelling in on cuba, evacuating 180,000 people in anticipation of flooding and mudslides. some of those folks went to government-run shelters, others to family friends' homes
7:11 am
that after the system makes a northward turn towards cuba. protectively, governor ron desantis has issued a state of emergency for 15 different counties including monroe where i am, miami-dade county, too, but most of the system is tracking to the western side of the state and that comes as we're on the july 4th holiday weekend it's wrapping up tens of thousands of people have come down here to the florida keys the biggest concern for the authorities, how are they going to get home? will they be seeing gridlock and deteriorating conditions as they pull out of the keys and also the airport. once wind gusts reached 135 miles per hour they continue shutting down operations on one of the busiest weekends they have seen since the pandemic. back to you. >> thank you, sam. dylan is in for al with the latest on elsa and what we can expect throughout the week. what's the word? >> good morning. it is still a tropical storm al this time. it's going to run into some rough, mountainous terrain so that's going to help break this

storm apart. but right in through here, this is where the water is very warm. as it continues that movement at 11 miles per hour, there's a chance it could strengthen again before it approaches key west. the track of this storm, you can see, prevents it from making landfall, at least going into early wednesday morning. and then it could make landfall in the big bend of florida there. but either way, the eastern side of this storm has a lot of rain. it also has the potential to produce a one to two, three-foot storm surge and the winds will be gusty, as well. so whether this is a strong tropical storm or a weaker tropical storm, rain could be a major issue. we could see 6 inches of rain especially in the tampa area stretch do you think to ft. myers. so we will have to see how this storm behaviors once it crosses over cuba. sheinelle. and now to the travel rush. tens of millions are heading home today, set to pack airports and roads once again after a record-breaking holiday weekend.

more than a year ago. but gas wasn't the only expensive part of the weekend. >> you're seeing rental car shortages. it's hard to get a dinner reservation. hotels are going for exorbitant prices. they're adding covid fees right and left. >> reporter: travelers wondering how did things get to expensive? >> demand has come back incredibly quickly, and we've seen prices driven by primarily renewed travel demands. >> california, florida and hawaii accounting for a quarter of all car rentals and flights. some airlines overwhelmed. >> american airlines, southwest, delta, they can't keep up with demand. they don't have the staffing for it. >> reporter: many of them offering double pay and $100 bonuses to staff working through the weekends to come. >> everybody is traveling. we've been cooped up for way too long. >> reporter: a new start for travelers, hoping it's the end of the pandemic. now, the good news is with so many traveling at the beginning
