we're ob early tonight because of the stanley cup final. which begins at 5:00 p.m. >> july 5 might look a lot like july 4. we're expecting a lot of fire works tonight. there was no shortage of shows nearly all of them were illegal. today as neighborhoods clean up and brace for more tonight. there's a call to allow the state to do more with the thousands pounds of illegal fire works they confiscated. firefighters are bracing for another night of problems. >> this is what is looked like in gilroy. this was not a city sponsored fire works display. these are all illegal neighborhood demonstrations. it was about the same in san jose. we caught a steady stream of illegal shows all night long. >> it was a beautiful night. i look around and fire works everywhere. >> celebrations seemed to follow

a pattern. first the boom. then the problems. for example last night it was a call to this mans home. for a report of a possible fire. then the evidence. this morning no sign of a fire. but the street was littered with fire works debris. >> it was crazy. i'm laying down and look out and see explosions of light. >> these fire works were lit, dangerously close to the dry east hills. the app shows how busy and already under staffed fire department was last night. officially they responded to 20 fire works calls last night. seizing 550 pounds of fire works this year. activists say across the state, police choose not to confiscate some illegal fire works because it comes with a hefty price tag. >> if law enforcement doesn't enforce it much. they get the fee.

>> she's leading the effort to convince the state to pass senate bill 277. a bill would allow licensed wholesalers to buy state confiscated fire works and resell them to other states where it's legal. and increase funding to be more proactive in finding illegal fire works. >> they are viable. packaged and in boxes. that instead of being destroyed can be resold. >> for now firefighters tell me they are focussed on another night of fire works and the flood of calls that come with them. >> it's going to be active tonight. relatively speaking we did okay. no major fires or injuries that were reported. there were fires in the east bay on a small level. one at a warehouse in oakland. this was near the coliseum. on 77th avenue. just after midnight.

around the roof of warehouse. crews got it under control quickly. people were lighting fire works in the area for hours and saw debris coming down. here's what the firefighter said. >> 50 firefighters were on scene. they're still putting water on the fire. we have gone defensive. >> here's another fire at a commercial building near 42nd and telegraph. no official word if either fire was started by fire works. it seems likely. in total oakland fire department receiving 250 calls for service. 60 were fire related. >> a woman and a teenage girl fighting for their lives after a drive by shooting. this happened during an illegal fire works show. one man died. it started after midnight. near 101. police say dozens of people were at the show when a silver honda

accord pulled up. wbs witnesses say they heard gang challenges from the people inside the car who started shooting. they drove away but crashed and got away on foot. no arrests made. >> search for survivors of the condo collapse was back on today. after the demolition of the part of the building still standing. >> the remaining structure came down in seconds. due to safety concerns for crews on the ground. as tropical storm is on the way. the implosion gives search rs ak says to parts of the debris they haven't been able to explored yet. the death toll is raised to 27. the locals are not calling it a recovery mission. >> there should be no talk about anything but rescue. and that is the 100% focus of

hitting the roads. and the sky. we have live pictures of dublin, richmond and san mateo bridge. and san jose. clear sailing there. why people are so enthusiastic about traveling and less concerned. >> i'd say that's the best way to put it. many travelers say that while covid is still on their minds, it's no longer enough of a fear to stay home during the holiday weekend. san jose international airport officials tell me the airport set a post pandemic record for travelers. 15,000 boarded planes on friday. even more on saturday. that corresponds with national figures. 2.2 million people took off friday. the biggest single day total since the pandemic began. some people said they were willing to take any risk to finally get out.

we are moving you forward as covid restrictions continue to ease across the bay area. here's a live look in san francisco. beautiful night. starting tomorrow, mask rules will change at city hall. face coverings will no longer be required for fully vaccinated visitors. the change puts the city in line with state guidance. however city hall officials say masks are mandatory for unvaccinated people and can be worn by anyone who want extra

piece of mind. the delta variant is the most common covid strain in california. this comes as california is again seeing a slight rise in over all cases. the question is, is it time to have more restrictions or continue to ease back? >> reporter: it's been less than a month since california fully reopened. and mandates are lifted. with the delta variant creeping in and numbers back up, some wonder are we headed towards another health and masking order? >> i personally am not vaccinated yet. >> she says she may soon change her mind. now that the extremely contagious variant is the most dominant strain in california. >> that's one of the things that will probably make me get it. >> the california department of public health says the delta variant now accounts for more than 35% of the new covid cases

in the state. up significantly from 5% of california cases in may. >> what is surprising to me is not only that it's the most common. but the rate of increase is really dizzying. and it's expected to be over 90% in a few months. if not weeks. >> there's also a possibility that the delta variant might cause more severe symptoms. >> the fact it's produces more virus. and people produce virus full a longer period of time. not only makes it more transmissible. but potentially more deadly. >> a nail salon hasn't taken chances since reopening in february. even after the state lifted the mask mandate. last month. they decided masks would be mandatory here. >> we cannot check everybody vaccination card. we don't know. that's why we do it. >> some are taking precautions. others worry a second mask mandate could crush them. >> at this point, i have nothing

left to do. >> he's taken too much of a hit during the pandemic. and his customers made it clear they would thot be okay with putting masks back on. >> we have been through a year and a half. struggling. there's not much i can do. >> what can people do to stop the spread? >> it's really a good time to get vaccinated. if you haven't. right now things are still pretty quiet in the bay area. we don't know how long it will last. >> first it was walgreens closing in san francisco over theft concerns. then target cut hours. now safe way is making a big change to try ask stop theft at a store in the city. we explain why you won't be seeing a lot of shopping carts in front of the safe way.

local stores as 6:00 instead of 10:00 because of theft issues. saying theft can become uncontrollable. >> it's very insecure. to be working. especially -- >> my experience with walgreens. i shop there a lot. it's really scary. for your own safety. you don't know what the people will do to you. >> late last week, target released a statement. saying it plans to work with law enforcement to improve store safety. we reached out today to the sfpd. nobody was available to speak. because of the holiday. >> thank you. a six month long investigation in san jose netted a cash of expensive bicycles and stolen construction equipment. investigators arrested a man who is the head of an under ground
