in just a bit. >> yeah. >> that friday tough. we will talk about that friday forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that. how is it looking?. >> it will be a great day in the area. take a look at the highs today, reaching into the upper 70s for the south bay. the peninsula in the 70s. the tri-valley reaching 80 degrees. some of the warmer spots will be the east bay. for the inland areas, san francisco, up to about 64 degrees. we'll take a look at all of our microclimates and the weekend forecast in a few minutes. mike, how is the commute rolling? rolling just fine right now. if you are able to get up and out of bed, good for you. looking over to the peninsula, some slowing. this is likely because of a road crew on 280 heading down through the area around page mill road. they may be moving cones right now. we will check that in a new minutes, let it develop. a couple of crashes in the north bay. i will give chp a little chance

to give us more info. this one near redwood parkway and east bay side, i believe out of the roadway though. back to you. >> thank you, mike. it is 4:31 right now. we could be heading to a mask reversal. it has been a month since california officially ditched the covid restrictions, but it seems in some plates it we may be heading backwards instead of forward. >> statewide the number continued to climb. this morning, california's positivity rate, 3.5%. it hasn't been that high since february. now los angeles county held leaders are bringing back indoor masks. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd has the latest. >> reporter: live music, food and crowds are back at toto santos park in concord. some people wearing masks outside while others are not. >> we are hoping that people have enough recorrect for each other that if you are not

vaccinated that you are wearing a mask. >> today i went to the gym and i wore my mask the whole time. i usually swim, but i went in and worked out and i don't trust this delta variant very much. >> reporter: that variant is one of the reasons why l.a. public health officials decided it is time to bring back the indoor mask requirement regardless of a person's vaccination status. the highly contagious variant is surging across the country, but despite l.a.'s rule change experts don't believe there will be a statewide reversal. >> i would be really surprised if we reinstituted a statewide mask mandate at this time, but i wondered -- i think that there might be county-based recommendations to wear masks indoor. >> reporter: alameda county telling us it is considering recommending people wear masks indoors. san francisco and contra costa county leaders also say they're not planning on changing the rules. if you are not fully vaccinated, some businesses still require

you to wear a mask. if you are fully vaccinated, you don't have to wear one. choices we have been getting used to since mask requirements were lifted on june 15th. business owner justin crosley says he won't be surprised if indoor mask requirements come back to the bay area. >> i'm kind of done trying to speculate. i have been doing that for a year and a half, and it is pretty stressful. so i just kind of way for them to tell me what i'm supposed to do next. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." we now have a better timeline when kids 12 and under could get vaccines. an fda leader says the vaccines could receive emergency use authorization in early to mid winter. the fda then hopes to move quickly to full approval. both moderna and pfizer launched trials for this age group in march. results are expected sometime in september. then the fda will need to review them. more than 4 million children have been diagnosed with covid-19 in the united states. federal prosecutors are talking for the first time about

two bay area men accused of plotting to blow up the democratic party headquarters in sacramento. back in january our investigative unit first reported on the arrest of one of the suspects, ian rogers from napa. at the time the authorities only mentioned the explosive devices they say were recovered at his home and business. the other suspect, jerard copeland, is from vallejo. after the election last fall the two hatched a plan to blow up the headquarters, hoping the bomb would be the first in a series of attack starting a movement. all of it a huge shock to democratic party leaders. >> in this day and age, you know, we should not be concerned about violence and terrorism just for participating in the democratic process. >> the fair face mult charges. if convicted they could face 20 years in prison. we are getting a new perspective on the surge of deadly gun violence across the bay area's three major cities.

overall killings are up compared with last year. digging deeper, look at the numbers from "the chronicle." they show homicides in oakland, san jose and san francisco within the first six months of each other from 2018 through 2021. all have seen increases this year. oakland though definitely driving the spike, recording 65 killings so far in 2021, accounting for about three-fourths of the regions numbers. a new push to go green from san jose. the city is working on a plan to reduce its carbon footprint. one of the main proposals is reducing the number of parking spaces developers are currently required to build. an environmental group, greenbelt alliance, is helping the city in its outreach effort. it says that the parking requirement gives residents incentives to buy vehicles and drive more. the idea, cut the number of spaces and people will buy fewer cars, cutting down on green house gases. >> we need to reframe our mind

said and think about instead of spending millions on garages why not invest in other ways for people to get around. >> to be clear, the proposal does not aim to reduce any parking that's currently available. it could be on the city council's agenda by the end of the year. now to a 13 1/2 million dollar commitment to help fight wildfires in the east bay. the east bay regional park district plans to use most of the money to remove dead and dining trees. about $3.5 million will go to buying and replacing firefighting equipment. it comes as part of the government's funding package signed into law on monday. it is certainly not monday. >> no, not at all. it is friday. i was thinking about that, marvelous monday, terrific tud, hump done, but friday is just friday. >> fabulous friday. >> forecast friday. >> let's do forecast friday as

we are starting out with cool temperatures. heading out of firefield we will see temperatures in the mid 60s to start. it starts to clear up around 8:00 to 9:00. this is the pattern we have seen. all clear the rest of the day as our temperatures head toward the upper 60s and low 70s. look at martinez today, reaching 78 degrees. 80 in livermore. 76 in san jose. palo alto reaching 74. santa rosa, up to 77 degrees. so no big changes compared to yesterday, and we are going to have a warm-up this weekend. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mikes, are you seeing any issues for the morning commute? carrie, we had a couple of incidents in north bay. this is as you are getting away from the bridge off the roadway, so a smooth ride. no major injuries. this other one in fairfield is down past the air base, shy of air base westbound coming into our area. hearing about a crash involving a rig and maybe a couple of vehicles stuck together.

it is sparsely populated, moving you over toward the peninsula. let's look how business is shaping up. let's check in with bertha. good morning. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. stocks are set for a muted open as wall street wraps up the first major week of second quarter earnings reports with a mixed session yesterday. we had the dow posting modest gains while the s&p 500 and the nasdaq slipped lower. a recent report showing a surge in consumer prices in june could be providing a bit of defense for those on wall street. janet yellen yesterday telling cnbc she predicts prices could continue to rise for several more months before they cool off. in focus today, we are waiting for retail sales data as well as earnings from the likes of charles schwab and kansas city southern. meantime, tesla electric vehicle

registrations in california, the country's largest ev market, surging 85% in the second quarter compared to a year ago. that according to research firm crossel. more than half of these registrations were for tesla's mid-size suv the model y. an 18-year-old physics student, oliver damon, will join amazon's jeff bezos on a space flight yeks week along with bezos's brother mark and legendary space engineer wally funk. the group will fly to the edge of space on blue origin's new shepherd rocket, scheduled to launch on wednesday. it will be an extraordinary trip. damon will be the youngest person ever to fly in space while wally funk at 82 is set to become the oldest person to become an astronaut. next week's flight comes after sir richard branson successfully reached space on a virgin

let's take you live outside this friday morning, looking at the bay bridge there from a distance. that is oracle park. do you know, we should all get together and go to a game. now that we're together again, we could go do things. >> i'm in. >> mike is like, don't push it. >> look, i was thinking of the group i would want to take. no, i'm kidding.

>> hey. >> sir richard branson is not available. >> because he could get good parking. >> remember, he didn't take you to space. >> that's right. >> and we bring you back every day. >> that's right. >> there you go. kari has a look at the forecast. >> great weather no matter if you are going to a baseball game, whatever you plan to do this weekend we are still seeing the nice weather pattern we have enjoyed much of the week, still holding today. in the upper 50s in palo alto and we will see it clearing by 10:00 or 11:00. as we head to the south bay, look at the highs and what we're headed for today, reaching back into the mid to upper 70s. we're not seeing too many changes just yet. we are looking at a range of temperatures from 86 in antioch to 71 in vallejo. oakland reaching 68 degrees. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen with daly city the mission

district while much of san francisco stays in the 50s. then take a look at what we're expecting. if you are going to point reyes, the high will be about 64 degrees, then drive up to ukiah and it is 92 degrees. we are going to see still some hot inland valleys, and it is to get even hotter for the weekend. one thing i'm watching is we will see a surge in monsoonal moisture by the end of the weekend, and some computer models are putting the chance we could see some dry lightning close to the bay area. that is not good. we knew that, you know, last year dealing with that lightning complex that we had in august, it doesn't look that extreme, but any time we even have a very minuscule chance of lightning we watch it closely because we know what it can do. as we look at the temperatures it will be trending warmer. not only warmer, but it will be a little muggy as our temperatures head into the low to mid 90s, and then we cool off

next week. we can see past the seven-day forecast that we are going to have the temperatures coming back down. looking at the inland forecast, it will reach into the mid 80s today but peaking on monday at 91 degrees, while san francisco stays mostly in the 60s. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? looks like we can drive pretty much anywhere and have a better drive than a few michblts ago on the peninsula. speeds are recovering for 280. i'm concerned about the cluster of crashes or incidents reported on the fremont side of dumbarton bridge. we will check on 84 and see what is going on as chp gets a chance to report what is going over here. 84, no incident. that is cleared from the area, no overnight closure there. look at the altamonte pass, no slowing there. over to the dublin interchange and down towards 580. we talked about the antioch bridge, no problems getting into

concord. 680. remember the weekend closure, we're having that as well. we will talk about that coming up for 242. the bay bridge is fully open for business, an easy drive. no problem either direction. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening later this morning governor gavin newsom's supporters will gather in outer richmond to voice opposition to the recall. his opponents are trying to hone in on several key points to chip away at support. that includes how he is handling the homeless epidemic. you may remember candidate john cox recently appeared in the bay area with a ball of garbage saying that symbolizes the problem. a berkeley poll found more than half feel his oland a's having a foot out the door, some members will tenants for the arena. among recent ideas, a possible indoor football team. there's also talk of professional women's basketball

coming from the arena. if the a's leave the arena, there's future development to think about. the meeting starts at 8:30 this morning. to a follow-up, the state energy commission is pressing the restart button on the hayward plant. this comes despite city leaders including the mayor of hayward's strong objection that it actually remain turned off. the commission is requiring the owners of the plant to work more closely with the hayward fire department. it also must commit to more state energy meetings. coming up next on "today in the bay," it is one week until the 2020 tokyo olympics but there are major concerns. the number of athletes that have covid. we will are the latest after the break. happening now, the death toll continues to climb in germany. this is due to the uncontrolled flooding there. so far 103 people have died. strong rains turned streams and streets into raging torrents
