i'm janelle wang. >> i'm terry mcsweeny. we take a look at the olympic flame. just after 8:00 a.m. sunday morning. in a few hours skateboarding will make the debut at the olympic games. skateboarding. we show us the athletes will show off the skills they developed in skate parks around the world, including many here in california. >> reporter: here we are along the tokyo bay. it's beautiful! i can't get over how beautiful the city is. today we're talking about skateboarding. it's the new sport in the olympics. one of the cool things about skateboarding, you can do it anywhere. in fact, mikey panned out quick. the stairs here, it's a possible skate ramp. they get crazy. among the rock stars of the sport is a guy from dayton. >> reporter: nija houston is a big deal. the 26-year-old is the new face of skateboarding. it's not just his face, it's his

body! covered in ink. he's good are the sport. he knows tokyo is a launching point. >> i think it has an opportunity to help the sport grow a lot. i think we're going to see a lot more skate parks pop up in places around the world, which is going to be great to see. >> nyjah's road to tokyo started in dais. he was skateboarding at the age of 5. since then a meet or call rise. 4.7 instagram followers and a four-time world champion but the olympics is a first. >> it's bigger than any x games or anything like that. i've never skated at one before oi to, obviously, a lot of pressure. a lot of nerves.

unfortunately, it stayed in the closet on the first day of olympics when the u.s. failed to place in any medal events. that's the first time it happened in 49 years. but lucky for us, the competition is just getting started. >> reporter: in the pool, on the field, and on the road, the tokyo olympics are off and running. the women's soccer team getting a much-needed first win against new zealand. when soccer star rose lavalle scored the team's first goal, her brother back in ohio was watching. women's softball made their record a perfect 3-0 saturday with a win against mexico. women's water polo defeated japan in the opener with a done before. >> reporter: women's eighthree consecutive gold medals and off

to a strong start on the sport's biggest strange. >> it's the olympics. it's the pinnacle of our career. >> reporter: men's volleyball defeated france 3-0. first lady jill biden represented the u.s. delegation catching the action in swimming and three-on-three basketball. >> it was a honor to play for the first lady. >> reporter: a show uniting the world in athletic competition. liz mclaughlin, nbc news, tokyo. skateboard living legend tony hawk will not be competing at the olympics. in honor of the sport making the debut at the games for the first time, he decided to take a lap around the course of to be owe. hawk said the sport is artistic and hopes the world will embrace it. >> it's surreal. i mean, i never imagined this would ngasn't popular. >> and that's a two and a half revolution aerial spin. he's looking forward to seeing

how skaters handle the pressure. here are a few athletes you want to keep your eye on. tonight our prime time coverage starts on the sand with a qualifying round of women's beach volleyball. stanford grad is looking for a win with april ross. men's gymnastics is on center stage. brodie malone is hitting the floor. watchmen's gymnastics here on nbc bay area. coverage at 5:45. in the pool incoming stanford freshman or i are husk is swimming in the women's 100 meter butterfly. watch around 6:40 tonight. overnight another olympic athlete tested positive for covid-19. that brings the total number of athletes who have tested positive to 14. despite the new cases, athletes continue to come and go from the olympic village today. you see them there. you see the masks. right now 127 total cases tied to the games. at least most of them masked, i guess.

five members of team usa have tested positive or placed in a health and safety protocol. back here in the bay area, covid numbers continue to trend up. that is an increasing number of restaurants and bars in san francisco reacting. more and more of them are now requiring people to prove they're vaccinated before heading inside. nbc bay area is in san francisco with more. >> reporter: you won't just get carded anymore at bars and restaurants in san francisco. more and more of them are asking people to prove they're vaccinated. like seven stills brewery and distillery which started asking for verification on friday but not everyone. >> it means either you have your actual card or a photo of your card. that's okay. but that's only inside. outside you can dine and drink in our beer garden no proof of vaccination required. >> reporter: mr. triple's has made a similar move. since the bar only has indoor space, all of its musicians,

staff, and now customers are required to be vaccinated and show proof of it. >> it was done in order to keep our staff, our community, our musicians safe. hopefully to prevent another shut down. >> the verdict still out for some bar goers. >> the first encountering it. we don't know what is required yet. >> others are committeely on board. >> i think it's great. i think it's great. i don't know how we're going to get out of this if there isn't some way to prove that people are vaccinated. >> san francisco bar owner alliance president said bars in the city are choosing to keep their staff and patrons safe and not necessarily taking a moral stance on vaccinations. the group, which represents more than 300 bar owners in san francisco, will announce an updated policy on vaccination status monday morning. but so far he says 85% of bar owners in the city are in favor of requiring proof of

vaccination for indoor customers. nbc bay area news. a major milestone reached in alameda county. they posted this tweet saying 1 million people living there are fully vaccinated against covid. the county is thanking people for getting their shots, continuing to wear masks, and staying home if they're feeling sick. to the fire coverage. we're continuing to keep a close eye on a big fire burning about 45 minutes south of lake tahoe. it exploded to more than 65,000 acres. it started on the fourth of july. firefighters say it was sparked by lightning. lighter winds have given firefighters and opportunity to cut new containment lines while hand crews are directly fighting the fire on several fronts. more than 2,000 people have been evacuated. and the dixie fire has burned nearly 200,000 acres and threatening thousands of buildings and homes. the fire burning gained more ground overnight. up nearly 14,000 acres.

all though it has torched largely remote, unpopulated areas, it's threatening businesses and homes an along the northwest coast. it's 19% contained. let's go outside. a live look at walnut creek. you can see the hills are dry, the air is warm, fire danger is high. heading this way another chance of lightning. that's not good for fire discharge. what is the chance we'll see more lightning? >> we'll be watching the next 24 hours very closely. in the meantime, off to the east seeing thunderstorms around the see year area. what looks like thunderstorm near the moment at the did dixie fire radar picking up, unfortunately, ash being thrown aloft of the strong winds. a sign of intense fire activity. and unhealthy to hazardous smoke levels toward lake tahoe. so clearly a big fire impact there around the dixie fire.

closer to home, things relatively quiet. not seeing smoke problems here and don't have the thunderstorms. but that could change in the next 24 hours as monsoon moisture, much like we saw last weekend, sweeps back over the bay area. so thunderstorms will increase in coverage over the sierra during the day tomorrow. as we head to monday and tuesday, you'll notice things are going to turn muggy around the bay area and we'll see, unfortunately, another chance of lightning spark fire danger. we'll talk about that and be getting close to 100 degree temperatures ahead in the seven-day forecast. coming up in about 10 minutes. >> thank you so much. coming up on the special i addition of nbc bay area news. tokyo. it's calm on the bay now but a tropical storm is on the way. some changes to competitions. the games haven't won but yes two mascots. we'll introduce you to the robotic version of them and show you some of their skills. but, first, we want to issue a

two men dead and four others hurt after a shooting in san are a fell. police found gunshot victims in several different locations including a nearby parking garage. witnesses say several cars sped away from the scene. one of them a black dodge charger. two victims were involved in car crash shortly after the shooting and another victim dropped off at a nearby emergency room. look at the damage done to a nearby nail salon. bullet holes in the wall. the salon manager has never seen anything like this in his hometown. >> so driving by here yesterday. everything was wonderful and normal. i get here now and i'm like in my town? this has never happened in the 37 years i've lived here. this is unbelievable. >> the victims range in age from 24 to 62 years old.

police say most of them were in town for a rap concert. getting people vaccinated and helping put feed on the table. the food bank distributed food and covid vaccines. the pandemic hit their community hard and people need more than medicine. >> we are able to come out and have food for free for families. we know that families need access to resources. >> a group who hopes home bound vaccinations, as well, can meet people at their front doors. every olympics has its own mascot. tokyo has two. meet the robotic versions of the mascots. they are representing the olympics and the pink robot for the para olympics. they put on quite the show for staff at one of the nbc work spaces in tokyo. their dances are preprogrammed but everything else is controlled when someone moves.

they react. so when you wave at one of the robots, she waves back! she blows you kisses. >> nice. speaking of which, let's get back to tokyo right now. it's a live picture. northern tokyo bay. looking good. trouble may be on the way. an approaching tropical storm is forcing changes to the athlete's schedules. organizers moved up rowing be i a day. everything has been moved up to sunday instead of monday. organizers said they're looking at tuesday's schedules. this is the first time for events in the games to be rescheduled because of weather. which is kind of surprising. the games have been going on for so long. but here we are. >> yeah. and this time of year the west pacific typical of what we see this time of year. similar to the atlantic. around tokyo it feels like miami or new orleans this time of year. you can see the maritime tropical air has helped to power up the tropical storm crossing through the coastline through the next few days.

and you'll notice we could be looking at rain totals of about 2 to 3 inches. the highest impact will be on monday. we might see a little more of the carry over into tuesday. so be watching this closely. winds expected about 30 to 40 miles per hour. some heavy rain at times. might see some lingering impacts into tuesday for those events. rowing, obviously, impacted by that. could be impacting things in tokyo over the next couple of days. closer to home, our watches for tropical weather that bring intense rain and unfortunately might bring lightning. hazy skies and 79. hot temperatures continue inland. 94 degrees. humidity at 10%. walnut creek 95%. san francisco the fog and the mist and only 62 degrees. some of that stratus quo, as we like to say in the forecast, continuing into tomorrow morning. so, again, 50s to start. drizzle at times on the coastline. temperatures tomorrow not changing a lot. near 80 in san jose.

should see upper 80s to low 90s around the trivalley. and 80s up toward the north bay. the attention will be on the moisture. that's a look at the fog tomorrow morning. notice on the right side of the screen, that's mid level clouds increasing instability that will first start off over the sierra during the day tomorrow. as we head toward this time tomorrow toward sunday night, you can see we've got the clouds that will spill to the west. this monsoon energy will bring in the instability and a lot of lightning potential. that's where fire danger will be elevated as we wrap up the weekend. there's more of that. it continues moving around high pressure. you can see the bands of showers past near the bay area as we head to monday and tuesday. and the temperatures also will be trending hotter. so the two things we're watching fire danger is the chance of more lightning. especially for the coastal range mountains and toward lake county and mendocino county. and moving forward in the ten-day forecast, look where the

high temperatures are headed. livermore close to 100 had degrees. you can see the temperatures staying hot. we see the chance of maybe some lightning at times into monday and tuesday. temperatures there, too, quite hot. even san jose getting a taste of 90. mainly in inland valleys north bay and east bay the follow up to the muggy conditions that we'll see that will help san francisco climb into the 70s. increase fire danger but the follow up where we have to watch for is the hot temperatures. once the monsoon moisture shuts down, we could see highs close to 100 degrees come wednesday. so things are nice and calm right now. we'll be watching the radar closely as we wrap up the weekend to see if the moisture, which is over the sierra tomorrow moves closer by monday. >> good. the moisture sounds so good. we can use it everywhere because the hills are just dry but you point out you might get lightning here and rain over there. it's not necessarily connected. >> yeah. they may not be associated with each other. or not like arizona deeper

that is enabling and it the representatives. >> reporter: the risk is not just to the games themselves but to us as dreamers of the action. the tokyo games will be all over our phones and compute screens giving bad actors another target. our passwords. >> trying to install a malicious software on your computer that can present itself in anything from ransom ware to information dealers. >> reporter: yep, hackers are trying to use your machines to mine crypto currency. protect yourself. the best advice? be careful when it comes to streaming sites, go with what you know. don't download apps or click on links because they promise to be faster. they're likely scam sites trying to snag your passwords. scott budman, nbc bay area news. gearing up for another day of

root for each other from a far. >> thank you. we'll go live to tokyo. that's the olympic torch at tokyo's national stadium. the flame will burn throughout the games following decades of tradition. how to this it fuelled is historic. >> yeah. it's fuelled, in part, by hydrogen. it's the first time the fuel source is going to be used to sustain an olympic fire. previous flames have usually run on propane. all though magnesium, olive oil, anything they had has been used before. hydrogen does not produce carbon dioxide when combusted. the second calderon is also fuelled by hydrogen. >> very neat.
