thank you for joining us. >> it is monday morning in tokyo, just a little bit after 7:00 in the morning. lots more competition is set for the next few hours. however, sunday some shocking results for team u.s.a. nbc's liz mclaughlin joins us live in tokyo with the details on that. >> good evening to you. good morning here. america is ten deep in medals right now. they're second in the lead. just one medal behind china. as you said, team u.s.a. is just full of surprises in the first few days of the games coming up with some shortfalls but some unexpected wins as well. >> oh, my gosh. my gosh. >> a day of history making medals for the u.s. americans winning first ever gold. in women's tae kwon do, individual foil, and men's ten meter air rifle. >> this is really nice to be at

first and i'm glad it finally happened. >> in the olympic debut of skateboarding the world number one fell short of expectation. arizona's eaton landed the men's street bronze. >> to be able to hold an olympic medal around my neck is a goal i'd never thought would happen. >> a big upset in men's basketball where france bounced back from seven points down late to stun the u.s. its first loss at the olympics since 2004. >> come in, play hard, and it's great we were able to come out with a win. >> makes the turn for home. >> team u.s.a. made a splash in the pool on the first day of swimming events earning six medals over all including gold in the 400. >> my dreams came true today. >> reporter: the u.s. softball team on a run with an extra inning victory over australia. >> and the united states walks it off. >> reporter: a winning streak they hope continues in tuesday's

gold medal game against japan. some drama played out in the u.s. women's qualifying rounds. the u.s. women making some missteps coming in second behind the russian team. simone biles the g.o.a.t. still going for the six events meddling in those and the team can still get the title on tuesday. speaking of simone, you may have seen her in this awesome leotard. yes, we snagged one. it is black and rose gold. about 3500 crystals on here and it is supposed to represent their dynasty. the powerhouse that is u.s. gymnastics and hopefully they'll dazzle in those medals and performance. back to you guys. >> ags you heard, team u.s.a.'s basketball team simply stunned in their first game of the olympics. we'll go now for reaction.

>> reporter: team u.s.a. loses for the first time since 2004 in the olympics. coincidentally, i was at that game as well in athens. so what happened this time here in tokyo? well, gregg popovich the head coach, pretty simple, saying this is a global game and the world is getting better. >> people shouldn't be surprised that the french team or the australian team or the spanish team or lithuanian team, you know, it doesn't matter who it is. the gap in talent shrinks every year as there are more and more great players all over the world. >> reporter: a couple things i noticed away from the tv cameras, final seconds of the game, i took this photo on the bench. there is draymond green and kevin durant, former teammates, really animated talking strategy. then right after the final buzzer, k.d. and oakland's damian lillard. after the game, none of the members of the team chose to speak with the media except for

obviously in tokyo. okay. is this the fourth surge? john hopkins university reports covid-19 cases have increased in all 50 states during the last week. now dr. fauci is warning the federal government could recommend that we all begin wearing a mask again in public. the new cases are mostly tied to, yes, that highly transmissible delta variant. you'll hear a lot about this. covid cases in missouri have shot up 70% in two weeks. los angeles and san diego counties now reporting the most new cases since february. here in the bay area, san francisco's expected to announce proof of vaccination requirements tomorrow. health officials are urging everyone to get that shot. >> 50% of the country is not fully vaccinated. that is a problem. particularly when you have a variant like delta. >> the uk variant was the most contagious virus we'd ever seen. it took over the entire state in

three months. the delta variant did that in three weeks. >> it is about to get worse. doctors are warning that the winter months could be really, really bad. in fact, one model predicts the number of covid deaths could triple by mid october. >> what dr. fauci is saying might happen nationwide is happening tomorrow. people in san mateo county will have to mask up in county buildings again regardless of their vaccination status. that goes for staff and visitors. the board of supervisors president says he is tired of wearing masks, too, but delta variant is spreading quickly and more fully vaccinated people are contracting covid-19. he says masks will be required out of an abundance of caution until everyone is vaccinated. >> just two weeks we've almost doubled our covid cases. that is a significant indicator. >> he says the board is making decisions based on science and data and urges everyone to get

vaccinated. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza and richmond bridge. we got new numbers today confirming traffic levels are on the roo iz in the bay area. we'll go to walnut creek where businesses are feeling the impact of the changing traffic patterns. >> reporter: since california reopened in june, color me mine in walnut creek has been packed but to employees dismay the street has been packed, too >> i have noticed an increase in traffic here. >> reporter: while bay area roads became refreshingly empty at the start of the pandemic caltrans tells us the average number of miles driven in the bay area isre feeling the shift more than others. san mateo county for example saw the greatest decrease. caltrans says the traffic is up 4% compared to what it was before the pandemic here in contra costa county. >> it is annoying.

of course i mind it. >> reporter: megan larson says traffic bouncing back on the nearby freeways has added time to her commute. >> it is like you can't even pull out of this parking lot. >> reporter: but, she acknowledges, there is a silver lining. the influx of cars means a potential influx of new customers ready to paint. nbc bay area news. caltrans says 6 of the #9 bay area counties have seen traffic return to or exceed what it was before covid-19. the three are still seeing less traffic than before. might surprise you. san mateo, san francisco, and santa clara counties. >> we continue our coverage of the dixie fire which is just tearing through plumas and butte counties north of us, grew nearly 10,000 acres overnight. the northeastern perimeter has merged with a smaller fire which charred rubble and blackened trees. all that's left. it's terrible. the bla heavy smoke have led to evacuation orders in several communities along the west shore of lake alminore. so far the dixie fire has

charred nearly 200,000 acres and at this point just 21% contained. right now we're watching the smoke from the dixie fire impacting much of northeastern california as the threat of lightning spark fires perhaps closer to the bay area over the next days increases. as the monsoon moisture arrives we'll have a closer look at the impact hour by hour when we come right back. >> thank you, rob. despite disappearing more than two weeks ago volunteers still searching for the missing runner in the east bay. up next, the new focus of their search. a graduation ceremony is always special but one in the bay area involves people determined to make a change during the pandemic. we'll take you there. ahead for us we're live in tokyo. what a day for team u.s.a. i got a chance to speak with some of the breakout stars like the gold medal swimmer and bronze wning skateboarder. we'll hhights and more ahead on "nightly news."

the search continues. volunteers spent another day looking for any signs of the missing runner in the pleasanton hills. he went for a run on saturday, july 10th, and never returned. police found his car and cell phone near the park. no sign of him, though. the alameda county sheriff's office says this has been one of the biggest searches on the west coast and they're mystified at this point. volunteers are focused on finding anyone with a home security camera now that could offer them some clues. pursuing their passion during a pandemic more than 50 women and men graduated from the nursing program at mission college in santa clara this weekend and will be in demand as the delta variant continues to spread. nbc bay area reports. >> reporter: for sarah espendonte of san jose this offers closure to the long journey to become an rm, interrupted by a pandemic that forced her to put some in-person training on hold. >> we were displaced from

clinicals and we needed to wait a couple more months to be able to go back to the hospital to finish our clinicals. >> reporter: but she and dozens of other classmates persevered even knowing they were headed to the front lines in the battle against covid. >> i never actually thought about, oh, i'm going to quit and do something different. i've always wanted to be a nurse. i was a medic or paramedic in the army. >> reporter: sarah had to wait a year to enjoy her graduation ceremony. mission college inviting both the class of 2020 and 2021 to be recognized in front of some beaming parents. for many here nursing is not just a job but a calling. covid just reaffirmed their dedication. >> i just don't see myself doing anything else. this nurse to be able to see people at the beginning, the middle, and the end of their life and to be able to change their life one patient at a time.

>> reporter: in santa clara, nbc bay area news. let's talk about the olympics again. a look at the medal count so far. china leads all countries with 11 total medals but the u.s. is close behind with 10. the russian olympic committee is third while the home country of japan is fourth. japan has won five gold medals so far. some bay area kids are getting inspiration from olympic skate boarders after the sport made its olympic debut last night. in livermore skate boarders at the parks today trying out new tricks. we caught up with skateboard instructor alan javenport and he says until now skate boarders have been seen as you know outcasts, just cool dudes doing cool tricks, but the olympics could change that >> i think it's great. anything that gets more notice for skateboarding and skateboarders is good. >> he says skateboarding is a positive outlet for lots of kids and he is hopeful the sport's olympic debut will encourage more people to get involve.

the weather having an impact on the games. we told you yesterday about tropical storm nepartek. rowing already cleared the schedule monday and tuesday when the storm is expected to make landfall. olympic organizers also closely watching the situation. not expected to strengthen into a typhoon. however, forecasters say it can't be ruled out just yet. what does it look like at this moment? >> a tropical storm looking at winds probably 30 to 50 miles per hour. you heard the two day impact we're likely to see there monday to tuesday. it will bring short-term relief in terms of high heat and humidity but stay tuned. we might get a taste of some of that tokyo weather heading our way by tuesday. you'll see that coming up in just a minute. first the forecast looking out to tokyo and you'll notice here the three day outlook does show a high impact for monday. plans outdoors. look at the temperature drop. at least in the low 80s but you see the wind and the rain by tuesday and wednesday. the circulation center with this storm starts to lift on off to the north side of japan. we should begin to see some drying conditions for the middle

part of the week. we'll segue now to our own moisture. starting to see a few high clouds off to the east of san h. 90 is going to be one of the cooler days this week as we could see upper 90s coming back to inland contra costa county by mid week. in san francisco, no warming. still 62 degrees with the seabreeze and low clouds. it will make another comeback tomorrow morning. numbers starting in the mid to upper 50s. what will start to be a little different, a sneak preview now as we head toward sunset later tonight will be increasing clouds coming up out of the south and east. that is the story of tomorrow. increasing moisture, may begin to see a few isolated showers inland early in the day. the future cast starts to pick this up as we head toward monday morning. you can see a few isolated showers, here. but as we head toward tuesday this might be the day it feels a bit more like tokyo around the bay area because it is going to feel muggy outside and with that added moisture comes the added chance of seeing a few scattered

showers. midnight monday into tuesday morning you're seeing it there. the showers that pass on by, unfortunately, may not register all that much in terms of real, measurable rainfall. maybe some passing showers at times. given that we're not looking at a lot of rain that really does illustrate the threat of lightning because you can see some of the stronger storms from the sierra, areas of yellow and orange which could briefly fire up may still have the slight chance of some lightning at times. we have to watch that up around the north bay hills. maybe along the coast down toward monterey as we head into tuesday morning. the weather is taking a more tropical turn. then after tuesday things start to warm up as the high builds back across central california and you'll notice as the seven day forecast scrolls at the bottom of the screen we're beginning to see those temperatures rebound quite a bit. a lot of the monsoon moisture will stay bottled up toward arizona and utah but watch our temperatures inland as we give you a ten day outlook moving you forward into and through next weekend. napa looking at three days of 90-d

likely wednesday and thursday. san jose briefly upper 80s to near 90 wednesday through friday as the chance of showers moves out. but oakland and bayside areas probably not seeing the heat. we should still keep enough of that marine layer to keep places like san francisco and oakland fairly comfortable. even for san francisco we should finally manage some low 70s starting tuesday and wednesday. we'll have to watch in addition to those rising temperatures mid week any chance -- yeah, muggy tuesday. probably getting your attention, right? high humidity, muggy conditions. the threat of lightning is still there. we have the record dry fuels in the mountains and really needs to be watched. things are a little drier here in northern california but something to watch next 48 hours and then a taste of heat for the valleys arriving for the middle part of the week. >> so in the east bay it is going to feel like japan. we'll have japan weather. >> yes. we are joining raj with the weather >> i like it. >> oh, it's going to be hot. still to come, will the

of the sport won silver and bronze medals in the rio olympics. his dad greg is a fencing legend. he is also a team u.s.a. coach. his sister sabrina is making her olympic debut. now, this is alexander's third olympics. he begins competing in about two hours and his dad is confident this time around he can reach the top of the podium. >> i think we have a great shot at winning the gold. >> really taking things one day at a time and making sure that you don't stress yourself out of things you can't control. >> tennis, anyone? kanak jha in men's table tennis. born and raised in milpitas he moved to europe at 15. now 21 he is america's best male player winning four straight national titles. he'll be serving it up starting at 6:00 p.m. about two hours later the women will hit the table. lily zhang was born in redwood city and grew up in palo alto. she and her u.s. teammates

trained in burlingame. a five-time national champion this will be her third olympics. she's won several international medals but is still looking to make it to the podium for the first time at the olympics. just three of nearly 90 bay area athletes competing in tokyo. you know, last night you asked me, you were concerned after watching team u.s.a. playing the exhibition games in las vegas. are they going to be okay? i said, yeah. they'll get it going and be just fine. it turns out team u.s.a. can no longer just walk into the gym and expect to win. those days are over. here's some good news. they are still in the competition. if they win their next two games they get into the quarterfinals. i don't know if they'll do that, though. just don't look good. >> iran on tuesday, right? >> yes. the only one who played well was drue holliday who came over one of two players from the nba champion milwaukee bucks, arrived 18 hours before the game. he still looked good. kevin durant struggling to hit shots. got to make baskets. so i don't know ifo focus on

has gone on display at the tokyo water front. >> workers put up the calderon hours after the japanese tennis player naomi osaka ignited the flame at the opening ceremonies on friday. with the stadium and other venues closed to the public this gives fans a chance to see the calderon up close, soak up olympic atmosphere, and feel the pride the japanese should be feeling for bringing all the countries together under very difficult circumstances. and there is a reason for pride right there. >> exactly. it is a very difficult situation. we have to keep that in mind these athletes are working under a whole different set of pressures aside from just trying to be the best in the world. now they're dealing with all of this as well. just that. >> no pressure there. >> and the weather hasn't been very kind either. >> no, not at all. >> heat, high humidity. a sneak preview of what it's been like coming to the bay area not so much tomorrow. i think by tuesday. increasing clouds tomorrow but look at future cast. we'll be watching this closely the next 48 hours. monsoon moisture making its way to the bay area will lead to muggy and hot. conditions heading toward the
