athletes vying for gold. the one thing heading to tokyo that could alter some of the games. >> good afternooanyou for joini this olympic edition o area news. >> we want to begin with some breaking news. former senator barbara boxer assaulted in oakland today. according to a tweet from her account she was in the jack london square neighborhood this afternoon when it happened. we want to show you the area where it happened. police say she was walking on third street when someone pushed her from behind, stole her cell phone and then jumped into a waiting car. the former senator is okay. she was not seriously hurt. the oakland police department is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. of course, sky ranger over the scene and will keep an eye on the situation and provide any updates as they come into our

newsroom. our other top story, california was the first state to impose the stay at home order and now it will be the first state to require allstate employees get vaccinated or get tested weekly. the governor made that announcement in oakland this morning. he said starting next month all 246,000 state employees will need to provide proof they've been vaccinated or accept weekly covid testing. state employees who choose to remain unvaccinated will also be required to wear an n-95 mask to work. it is the state's latest push to slow down the highly contagious delta variant which is causing infections and hospitalizations to go up as well as our positivity rate. the governor blasted conservative politicians and pundits for spreading misinformation about the covid vaccine. >> we're exhausted by the ron johnsons, tucker carlsons, we're exhausted by margie the right w chamber that has been

perpetuating misinformation around the vaccine. >> elder care facilities, even those who work for the private sector will also have to comply with the new rule as well. health care providers have until august 23rd to get all of their employees to comply with the new rule. spokesperson for the governor for now says t plans to issue fines. the governor's move isscross th. especially in co have just reinstituted mask rules. we have a san jose dmv office. this is where they're taking this. that's a pretty bold stand to take so how are people reacting? >> reporter: well, as you can imagine, there aren't too many state agencies that require face-to-face contact than the dmv but we essentially got mixed opinions from people we talked to about the governor's new order for state employees.

it was a busy day at the dmv offices on alma avenue in san jose. jerome brown took a while to get his new license plate. while he believes the governor is right to require state workers get vaccinated, he wasn't worried about exposure inside the dmv. >> i got my shots already so i'm comfortable. >> reporter: do you think the governor is doing the right thing in doing this? >> i think so. >> reporter: why? >> public safety. for everybody's safety to stop the virus. >> reporter: some people were skeptical saying why should state employees be different than workers in a bank or store? >> it's like you're working with the public. what's the difference? that's my opinion. there's federal government and there's -- you know, anyone who's in public. what's really the difference? where do you draw the line? >> in san mateo county, the move comes as the county begins requiring masks in county facilities whether you're vaccinated or not. david caniba says he's not sure

if the county will follow the governor's lead but applauded the decision to put public health first. >> i don't think considering the political environment and the recall, that he wants to do this. it's very, very tough. >> some people we talked to were required to put masks on. >> the more people get vaccinated, the better. helps us move forward. yeah. >> reporter: what you think the governor did is okay? >> i think so, yes. >> reporter: in fact, the santa clara county executive says he not only supports the governor's move, he said the county will follow suit with its own workers soon. robert handa, nbc bay area news. the governor is making the news less than 2 months before california's recall election. the race is getting tighter. as of last week 48% favor

keeping gavin newsom in the governor's office. 43% want to recall him. it appears newsom's numbers are declining as c climb. >> polls are always about how do you feel today? we've still got several weeks, but rear its ugly head even more so, more forcefully, the governor's going to have a hard time because you're going to have two groups of people, one those who didn't want to be masked because they've already been vaccinated and, two, those who didn't want to be masked period. >> as for the republicans who want to replace newsom, the poll has republican radio host larry elder as the surprise leader at 16%. john cox, kevin faulconer tied at 6% and caitlyn jenner at 4%.

schools just weeks away from reopening the doors after a year and a half of distance learning. now the scramble is on to find enough teachers, others in a mad dash to make sure classrooms are safe and clean for students. we are showed the last-minute prep to make schools ready. >> reporter: well, august 18th is the big day here in allen brock. there will be changes to the rules here but administrators and parents say they're eager to get started. >> the custodians are going classroom to classroom. sanitizing every corner after a busy summer. >> we have an amazing team, you know, helping because we're just wrapping up summer school and we need to clean. >> reporter: because of social distancing rules, many unused desks are piled up in one corner of the classroom but schools across the state are loosening some of the social distancing guidelines allowing more assroom. to sit

at allen rock the plastic sneeze guards will stay in place and every room is equipped with an air purifier as an added safety measure. lucina cruz says last year was tough serving as ars if schools enough teachers by the time the first bell rings, something every district appears to be struggling with. >> we do. we still have some vacancies but we are very -- we trust that we're going to be able to find the teachers that we need. >> in alan rock, 5% of the students chose not to return to the classroom this fall. that's about 400 children. the superintendant says the program they will attend won't be called virtual learning anymore. it's now known as independent study. for the rest, their rooms are almost ready to welcome them back. >> very excited to see the kids back. >> in san jose, nbc bay area

news. >> i'm sure the kids are excited too. thank you, damian. summer games in tokyo. busy first weekend of the olympics now turns into a first full week of competition. a live look at the cauldron in tokyo. the olympic flame burning bright even though rain drops are falling. it is another big day at the olympics. nbc's liz mclaughlin is live from tokyo. just after 8 a.m. tuesday there. we're gearing up for another day of competition. you have your hat on. is that because it's raining? we know some events were canceled because of the tropical storm moving in. >> reporter: absolutely, janelle. it actually cleared up. you just missed a beautiful rainbow over the tokyo bay. the sun is peeking its head out after some wind and rain. i got wet. i didn't mind. it lowered the high temperatures that the athletes have been dealing with in competition over the past few days. you might hear a helicopter

overhead. security is beefing up. lots of events going on here and u.s.a. at 14 in the medal count. 8 of those were earned in the pool. >> to enjoy the national anthem. >> reporter: u.s. swimmer caleb dressel is vying for six gold medals in tokyo and already getting comfortable at the top of the podium. part of the first finishing team in the 4x100 free relay. >> i feel s a little shaky so i'm glad somewhat decent one under my belt. >> katie ledecky earned silver in the 400 free in a narrow loss to aussie arianne timus. arianne had a great race. >> reporter: four more races on the schedule including her 1500 meter free, a new addition this year. the women's gymnastics team stumbled in qualifying. still has a shot at the third straight gold in the final

couple was killed in a car crash in minnesota last night. the sheriff said 7 people from california were in a ford expedition when it collided with a chevy. police hav identities of the children so it's unclear if they family. alcohol does not determine what happened. a major cleanup is planned for antioch. the mayor unveiled a sweeping crime prevention practice. >> there are moms who can't come here to wash their clothes because there are drug dealers. i was standing out here and i witnessed two individuals ar described what's been happening in antioch's sycamore square forfar too long. now the city has a plan to clean things up.

calls for help when gets out of hand. they say they're trying to stay afloat and are fearful. in antioch, jodyz, nbc bay area news. as attention, the fbi and other federal agency are joining the fight to curb violence. less than two weeks ago surveillance video captured two gunmen beating an asian man. a day later the same camera caught a robbery and beating of two asian women at the same intersection. two of more than a dozen attacks. today oakland's police chief says he has allotted overtime for additional officers to patrol chinatown on foot. >> the idea that our most marginalized community, seniors will be walking down the street and accosted assaulted and robbed is clearly unacceptable. at the oakland police department we've been looking at the

any lightning strikes could spark fires. we are under a heightened concern for the possibility of these lightning strikes. let's b microclimate forecast. view from emoryville towards san francisco shows quite a bit of fog at the coast line. on top of that today we had a tremendous amount of cloud coverage as well moving in with the monsoonal moisture. at the coast it was cool with a foggy breeze. headed anywhere, you noticed some of that humidity. i wanted to show you, we had isolated thunderstorms. the slight chance of that. that will continue through tomorrow morning and then looking at hotter weather ahead. let me show you what's driving the weather pattern. filling out the hot area of high pressure. we have been talking about this over a week. the chance of this happening. everything is lining up. clockwise circulation is hoping to pull up this monsoonal moisture. more humid air. then we have a small little system out here. not really expected to do a

whole lot. one thing it is doing is the counter clockwise circulation around that. helping to create this conveyor belt. it's a second mechanism here to host that up through around california. you can see what we're concerned about is this line down here gradually moving off to the north as you move through tomorrow morning. the future cast tonight shows the best chance of thunderstorms will be over the sierras. but by tomorrow morning that's when we could get activity over the east bay, south bay, maybe even right over the bay. tomorrow morning we have that chance of some isolated thunderstorms. then gradually this pushes off to the north as we head through the day tomorrow. we'll get that sunshine in here. we'll a srt it off tomorrow ouds early to start.l temperatures in the 60s to the south bay, peninsula and trivalley. cool breeze over san francisco and the north bay. by the afternoon, hotter.
