of the first tech giants to throw down the gauntlet, but already other bay area companies are starting to follow suit, telling employees if you want y got to get clear, employees coming back to current buildings must get vaxed first. the ceo sending out a memo that reads in part, anyone coming to work on our campuses will need to get vaccinated. >> i think you're going to see many employers following suit. >> reporter: ucsf infectious disease specialist telling techies, get used to it. >> we are heading back indoors with the fall and winter coming. and those are higher risk settings. and a bunch of vaccinated people together is a very low risk setting. >> reporter: in fact facebook followed suit shortly after, as did foster city's cyber security company.

>> we think the most important thing is to prioritize health first. >> reporter: citing health concerns both for coworkers and clients. >> for those that want to be part of it, they have to provide us proof of vaccination so we know the population we're putting into an environment with each other is in the exact same situation. >> reporter: a situation lots of companies tell us they're concerned about. in mountain view, scott budman, nbc bay area news. thousands of students in the east bay return to the classroom today after a year and a half of distance and hybrid learning. brentwood superintendent said attendance was up today although parents were still given the option to have kids learn from home. over at brentwood elementary school parents lined up to pick up their kids who had to keep their masks on all day except during lunch. although teachers are not required to get vaccinated, most of them are. the district received funding to help kids catch up academically. parents we spoke to said they just want their kids to catch up

on social skills. >> i was nervous. he's never worn a mask for very long, so i didn't know how he was going to do with that just being around people for the first time in over a year. >> afraid to have the kids interact, it's terrible for them. getting them out of school for the time they were, it was brutal for them. >> the district has a team of nurses in charge of contact tracing if there are any positive cases. let's take you outside for a live look at san francisco. a new survey shows more than half of restaurants in the city support vaccination requirements for indoor dining. but there are questions about how owners would make those rules work. nbc bay area's christie smith spoke with several restaurant owners. >> we're lucky in the fact that all of our work rs are vaccinated. >> reporter: at this wine bar in the castro district, owner matt schuster is looking ahead at what he might do. >> i think it's a natural chain of events which we're going to have to start asking for vaccination cards.

>> reporter: as the delta variant circulates, more people are asking to eat outside again. he took part in a survey from the golden gate restaurant association that found 63% are supportive of an indoor vaccination requirement that includes customers and staff. >> it tells me that a lot of independent restaurant owners are willing to make some compromises if it lets us keep everybody healthy and keep us in business. >> reporter: lori thomas is with the restaurant association. they did not issue a blanket recommendation but strongly asked workers be vaccinated. >> restaurants have multiple entrances. restaurants have people like delivery drivers coming in and out, sometimes vendors coming in and out, certainly customers coming in and out, people sitting outside. >> that's a really difficult one to deal with. >> reporter: pete sicknick with water bar and epic steak says they're looking at the data and don't take the issue lightly.

be competing for the u.s. and jade carrie, who ranked nine in the qualifiers will be replacing simone biles. she will be a missing competitor in this event. and this is the second event that she's sitting out on here at this olympics. >> u.s. gymnastics superstar simone biles will not defend her all-around title, announcing she's dropping out of the competition to focus on her mental well being. the decision comes just a day after she withdrew from the team final. her teammates saying biles' health and safety are the top priority. >> she's going to take it day by day. >> we support her. >> like i said, we support her. >> reporter: tough decisions for biles that have been met with an overwhelmingly positive response. usa gymnastics saying in a statement it supports her decision. beings, we have emotions. >> reporter: t house, katie ledecky, back on top of

the podium dominating in the 1,500 meter style. a race available to women for the first time this year. teammate erica sullivan's second place finish sweetening the victory. in another olympic debut, the u.s. women's 3x3 basketball team won the sport's first gold medal with an 18-15 victory against the russian team. in a rebound for the u.s. in men's basketball with a win against iran, following a disappointing opening game loss to france. more success for the u.s. in diving wednesday. >> still feels like i'm living in a dream, but it's just amazing to see all of our hard work and dedication pay off. >> reporter: pushing the total medal count past the 30 mark. the u.s. now leading that medal count with 31 total. 11 of those are gold medals. and more medal opportunities coming up later today here in tokyo, early in the morning for you guys. we've got medal competitions in

shooting, rowing, fencing, swimming and of course the sport we're all talking about, women's gymnastics. that's the latest here in tokyo. i'm liz mclaughlin, jessica and janelle, back to you guys. >> a lot of action today. thanks, liz. tonight bay area gymnasts are voicing support for simone biles and her decision to prioritize her mental health. >> at airborne gymnastics, gymnasts say what biles did is admirable. it shows to the world that even the best of the best can struggle with mental health issues. the movement also prevented simone biles from getting seriously hurt. >> it is very dangerous if your mental game is not where it needs to be at the time it needs to be at. so, i think it was very smart for her to not put herself in a position where she could potentially get injured because it's very dangerous what she's doing. >> some of the young athletes say there is an enormous pressure from social media to be perfect and that it's important

for usa gymnastics to recognize the stress that olympic gymnasts are under. now you can also follow our bay area athletes by heading to nbcbayarea.com. we have an athlete tracker right on our trending bar. exactly two years ago today the city of gilroy was rocked by a mass shooting as a gunman opened fire at the city's famous garlic festival. city leaders placed flowers on the memorial in what's called christmas hill park. the pandemic cancelled last year's festival and this year it was limited to a takeout event. the shooter took three lives and wounded 17 others. and the mayor said today we must work to stop the violence. >> and there remains the challenge nationwide to end violence committed with weapons that are already illegal, like the one used in this incident. >> also today, attorneys representing the wounded survivors of the shooting held an online update, announcing they are suing century arms, a gun distributor they claim is

responsible for modifying and selling assault weapons, including the one used in this shooting massacre. a hate crime investigation underway, investigators looking for someone who defaced a piece of art. police released this surveillance video. they'r looking for this man seen spray painting a social justice sculpture in front of the high school in mill valley. happened last tuesday around 11:00. the vandal covered the words black lives matter and equity. that art piece was installed last summer in the downtown plaza and then moved to the front of the school just a few months ago. it is a familiar sight in high end shopping malls, tesla show rooms, but not for long. the car maker is shuttering a number of its show rooms. it's another massive blow to mall owners which have struggled to hang on to tenants. no word on if the santana row

we're all being asked to conserve energy and ease strain on the power grid. local fire crews ran drills on the south bay to make sure the equipment and f prepared for fires that may break out. cal fire is at preparedness level five for only the third time in its history. that means 80% of its resources are at large fires right now. >> since january 1st, we've responded to 296, 300 incidents throughout the year and just going. >> cal fire concerned about how fast it's using those precious resources, including more than 6 million gallons of fire retardant and 3.5 million gallons of water. governor newsom joined his counterpart today touring the damage left behind by the tamarac fire. the fire burning on both sides of the border, it's 58% contained right now. governor newsom year

>> if there is contact with vegetation, it will be tagged as an emergency. >> when they're not touching but getting close, pg&e says includ phone, or cable line. so, how much space is considered safe? the public utilities commission says you must keep your power lines free of hazards. if you would like a pro to take a look pg&e says it will check for you. >> if you do see something that's coming very close, please call us. >> if pg&e tells you pruning branches is on you, do not do it yourself. both pg&e and cal fire say it's too dangerous. they recommend calling a professional tree trimmer. a few companies told us they were charge anywhere from a couple hundred to couple thousand dollars depending on how much you need clear and where. >> when you are chopping for

they wanted to talk about back home in the bay area. >> go p town. when i stepped on the field, i was that little girl. i was blonde at the time just in my pleasanton league competing with my neighbors and all that and now i'm on the olympic stage. it was kind of surreal and i'm really honored. >> i can remember countless tournaments driving all across the bay area and just constantly practicing, getting stuck in traffic, trying to avoid traffic, you know, all of it. >> we don't regret a thing and we're so excited to put softball on the big stage and show young girls that it's a dream for them and it's possible. >> i speak for all little legal parents here, all those games and tournaments and practice,s, what a great payoff for everyone associated with monica abbott and val ar yo toe, bringing home the silver. we'll send it back to you. thank you, raj. our pleasanton's own valerie.

degrees. winds out of the northwest at 23. so, cool, brisk wind. back into livermore, 96. so, 29 degrees hotter towards the tri-valley. winds out of the west at 14. let's take you into the heat into livermore and it's going to be tough the next make sure to take frequent breaks. drink lot of water. we're holding on to the 90s through the next hour and we're dropping into the 80s by 6:00 and 7:00. if you happen to not have ac anywhere in the bay area, especially the east bay with 70s hanging on later tonight, your house is going to have a hard time cooling off. so, keep that in mind. the main driver of the heat is the area of high pressure in the southwest. it stays in effect tomorrow helping to pull up the heat, also a little bit of humidity. even cloud cover. today we had the filtered sun shoin and it's going to stay in play for us tomorrow. there it is at 7:00 and as you move through the day you can see

the southerly surge of cloud cover with us. temperatures got you at 66 for the south bay, peninsula 63, tri-valley 67. and san francisco and the north bay with some of the foggy breeze not quite as mild to start, upper 50s and low 60s. daytime highs tomorrow, it's going to be hot. isolated heat, especially for the inland east bay. but we're really setting ourselves up with the microclimate extremes, as we'll keep fog at the coastlines. so, we had 60s at san francisco and half moon bay, oakland down to 74, san jose 86, closer to the heat, up to 98 in liver mother, 102 in brentwood and 97 in concord. you're tired of 102 brentwood. we've got changes on the way that i think you'll like. the hot area of high pressure we talked about, that starts to kick to the east by this weekend and we'll see a cooler system beginning to move close. we're good for a 5 to 10 degree drop for the inland valleys. in san francisco temperatures stay steady the next couple of
