remote region off the coast of alaska. 8.2 magnitude quake hitting the illusion islands. that prompted the sounds of evacuations. >> tsunami warnings are canceled and the earthquake triggered a tsunami watch for hawaii. the quake was above an 8.0, and given its power it's known as a great earthquake there. >> what a way to wake up this morning. but here we are. thank you for making us part of your morning. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia.

smoothly, and we'll talk about that coming up. back over to you. >> thanks, mike. san francisco is considering an indoor mask mandate regardless to your vaccination status. yesterday mayor london breed said the city is, quote, looking to go forward with its vaccination proposal covid infections and hospitalizations. berkeley also calling for a mask mandate. starting today you will need a proof of vaccination before going out to bars in san francisco, and that could be in the form of a qr code or vaccination card, and the other would be proof of a 72-hour negative covid test. 7 decision was made this week by the bar owner alliance. it's not a government mandate

but an industry recommendation. if the tier system was still in effect more than half of the bay area would be in the purple tier. county on the verge of people with a rate of 9.9 cases. >> the owners here are covid careful. >> we have people that are vaccinated but continue to wear the mask, myself included. >> vaccination cards on file, and safety remains the focus at this gym. >> i don't think that anybody should have lifted the mask mandate to begin with. >> under the old state tier mad

san mateo would be on the verge of a shutdown for gyms and indoor dining. >> hopefully everybody could get their act together and get their shots. i know it's tough and i didn't want to do it but i did it. >> we are seeing a more transmissible variant, and still a large unvaccinated population. >> the infectious disease doctor said the delta variant is fueling the latest surgeon but didn't see a need for a shutdown as hospitals are not overwhelmed. >> even though we have a large high curve infections, my feeling is it would not be necessary to use up a ton of hospitalizations. >> when i go to crowded places i still wear it. i have one in the car and one in my shirt.

>> reporter: the cdc and california department of public health are recommending masking indoors for everybody, not vaccinated and vaccinated. nbc bay area news. >> covid throwing a curveball at silicon valley. this comes just two weeks after twitter reopened their offices. the company said it made the decision after reviewing updated cdc guidelines. twitter also pausing future office reopenings. meantime google and facebook are also requiring employees who are returning to the office to be fully vaccinated. google is also pushing back the date to employees to return to the office to october 18th. and then the police looking for a man that vandalized an art

installation. it's not clear if the same person is tied to both attacks. developing today, san francisco leaders layout a new plan to fight lawsuits. owners month have demand letters. the d.a.'s office looking into the matter. the city believes the suits are being filed by out of town lawyers. 4:37. happening in plumas county. new evacuation orders for the dixie fire. that fire has burned some 220,000 acres destroying at least 60 structures including smaller businesses and sheds. the fire is about 25% contained.

>> smoke from the dixie fire is having an impact in the skies over sacramento. hazy skies 65 miles south of where the dixie fire is burning. this week winds shifted direction and looks like it did here in september, and people with breathing issues told to stay indoors. >> that could be a problem for us for quite sometime because the fires are still raging. >> the fires are still going and we still have a lot of heat and that's also with the way the winds shifted bringing some of the smoke into the bay area. we saw that yesterday, especially around sunset. the light shades of blue showing a moderate amount of smoke coming in for many of the microclimates especially for parts of the east bay and north bay and part of the tri-valley. we do have some clearing in the coast this afternoon but we have patches of the smoke coming through for today.

once again, it's all because we are dixie fire to the tapl arak fire. as we take a look at where we are headed for today, some upper 60s for san francisco. oakland reaching 74. 97 today in concord. mike, you were spotting a possible fire reported? >> yeah, here in the chp report, 280 around saratoga. i believe it's just a little encampment just off the freeway. over here in fremont area, a closure around the tunnel. still cannot make the connection between 680 and that junction so use 680 and mission to get

we're seeing a lot of the delta variant surge across the country. apple is requiring their employees to wear mask in 45% of their stores nationwide. uber eats delivering flowers. uber expects to roll the option out nationwide by early next year and that will help markets out just in time for valentine's day, i think. and so guys if you need that

>> but the weekend provides a little extra something, too. >> yeah, people in the valley looking for our microclimates, and it has been cloudy but will clear out throughout the day. let's talk about air quality because we have seen changes in that recently. for the north bay it's just above the threshold from good to moderate. it's starting to get worse in parts of the santa clara valley. south bay looking good but elsewhere you do need to limit your time if you are sensitive to the smoke but it did give a beautiful sunset yesterday evening. all of the beautiful views of the sunset here, those orange skies we see. it's nice to see it at sunrise and sunset and not throughout the day. look at the temperatures reach

into the upper 80s for the northbound. 90 in martinez, and oakland, 74 degrees. the further you head inland the hotter it will be. you can see the range in temperatures from oakland to brentwood. livermore in the upper 90s. morgan hill looking at a high of 95 degrees. still there are 60s near the coast. that high pressure is just not moving and will slowly start to roll off to the east and will cause the heat to back off a little bit. we are seeing monsoonal showers and thunderstorms and we will have a chance of that going into the weekend. as we look at our 7-day forecast, we have hot temperatures today and tomorrow. once again, a little cooler for the end of the weekend for some of our inland valleys, and more of the same really next week. for san francisco, a lot of upper 60s here. not seeing too many changes. at times the fog rolling in, and you will at times get some sunshine. hopefully, mike, the commute

stays calm. >> yeah, it's almost 4:52, 4:51 right now, and it's green as you would expect in the construction zones. over here the longer drive, altamont pass, and chp said it could be gusting and it often happens overnight there. it was slowing back around 205, and that's not unusual either. those are the longer drives, right? folks getting off the antioch bridge doing well. you are looking at the span -- you can see the city lights there -- sorry, there we go. i'm not a meteorologist, i am just pointing out what i see on the camera. back to you.

certain level. >> all of them started training at this facility starting in 2017. the rower giving the commands is a cal bear. their olympic coach also from cal, mike taty. she is considered the mom of the team and she has the mom jitters to go along with it. >> my heart is just beating fast thinking about them tomorrow finally, this is what they have practiced five years for. they have done the work and they just really need to get to the starting line and have the best race of their life. >> fingers crossed for tomorrow's race. nbc bay area news. it's pool time in primetime.
