11:00 at night here at tokyo. hoda is over at the gymnastics center and i'm sure we heard your screams of joy about an hour ago when suni lee won gold in the women's all-around. they probably heard it out on the west coast too, hoda. >> s.g., can you believe it? i mean, can you believe what suni lee did? it was a nail biter to the end. she took the gold. i'm choked up thinking about it. i had a chance to talk to her downstairs, tearing overflowing. the thing i love about her, the thing i love the most about her, she said i told my dad this was our dream. this is our medal. this is for us. this is for my coach who's not going to get one. like she is so selfless through it all. i never thought we'd be sitting here saying that suni lee would take the gold in the all-around, but you know, women's gymnastics

there's not a lot of storybook endings until now. what suni lee delivered is a gold medal for team usa and it's the most thrilling night, capping off an incredible day. that started with caeleb dressel winning a gold and then having that special moment with his family. this morning a thrilling and triumphant return for team usa. gymnastics suni lee winning gold in the women's all-around. starting strong on vault and soaring to the top of the leaderboard with her bars routine. then nailing every flip and landing during her floor routine. earning the gold on the biggest night of her career. jade carey took over from superstar simone biles who was in the audience and who earlier thanked her supporters after dropping out to focus on her mental health. the outpouring of love and support i have received has made me realize i'm more of my accomplishments in gymnastics

relay team led by katie ledecky, the u.s. edging past the heavily favored australians d finishing behind china who set a world record. finally a tough blow for u.s. track and field. american pole vaulter sam kendricks testing positive for covid-19 knocking him out of tokyo. you may remember during the rio games, kendricks a member of the u.s. army reserves, stopped the vault mid attempt when he heard the national anthem playing. kendricks is such a class act. i want to go back to suni lee and everything we saw at the gymnastics center. we were talking about this, hoda, while she's competing for the gold medal and going from discipline to discipline, she actually sees hoda and she starts to smile. doing the heart emoji. it just showed that she was so cool under pressure that she was sort of in the zone, but she was still having a good time and you

were shouting back at her. i think she said don't cry. she said i'll start crying. >> i said happy tears and she did a thumbs up. i said, how do you stay so calm and she said her heart was pounding out of the chest. but somehow, she managed her emotions. we are super proud of suni, but no more is more proud than her excited parents, and guess what? john and yang are with us by phone. hi! >> hi. >> okay. we're bursting with joy over your daughter. can you just please explain to us when you realized that suni had clinched the gold. what did it feel like to be you, john? >> oh, my god, i almost cried and i never cry.

i'm so happy. >> i have -- >> well, you know -- i'm having a little bit of trouble hearing you, but i want to continue this conversation because, john and yeev, i know this is a dream of yours and your daughter's for so long. one of the things that struck me, john, was in your backyard, you actually built her a beam, just for her. when she was a little girl. you talked about it being your dream. and it started back then. so take us back to that point. tell me what that dream was about. >> well, when she made the host program, i said, okay, we have something special. so i knew that she could -- she's going to go pretty far. i highly expected gold and of course that being -- every time

she's on the beam is when i get worried, but i'm so glad that i built that beam for her. >> well, that beam that you build her was the foundation of this whole night. it played out on the national stage, on the biggest night of her life. she talked about how she felt nervous, but i know one thing you say to her, john. you say, just have fun. were you kind of trying to project that to suni? because i know you couldn't be here in the stands with her. >> yeah, i spoke to her last night. but i think when -- as you're watching her and i said, you know, just go out there and have fun. i think maybe she thought about that because we saw a smile on her face at one point and that was amazing. >> well, your daughter is a national treasury. the community came out in force and i heard you had so many people couldn't fit in your

unfold as well. we'll see it all in primetime tonight, but i mean, suni, she's a star. how did she pull it off? >> maybe it was the smile with hoda. >> isn't that amazing? she must be cool as a cucumber if she ask give hoda the heart emoji. >> well, i guess it's different because without simone biles, suni lee was either the favorite or the second choice so that changes all of the calculus. we were at the trials in st. louis and on the second night, she outperformed simone biles numerically. so you knew she could do it in a one-night situation like tonight but it's a different pressure. it's very close, very tight. came down to the last floor exercise and she was able to do it and the very talented woman

from brazil she had a couple of stumbles in her floor exercise. >> not to give everything away, but it came down to the wire. >> yes, absolutely. they were strong in all the other three apparatus, both suni lee and andrade, the athlete from brazil. andrade, she had a chance to win and she has a great, great routine but a couple of her jumps -- she doesn't stick the landing on them. at the end of the day, the tumbling -- at the end of the day, that gave the slight margin for suni lee to continue the american tradition. >> i want to ask you about the other athlete, jade carey, it wasn't her night but she has other chances to do her best and she's an excellent floor gymnast. >> yes. it was outstanding as well. she did not have a good night on the beam, so this was a situation where she is really at the last moment as simone biles goes out, she gets the opportunity. she finished ninth in the qualifying. as you said, another chance to medal.

>> i'm glad you mentioned simone biles, because there she was. she's been in practice, you mentioned earlier. we talked about it. she's gone to practice so there's a possibility she will decide to compete in the individual events. do you think she'll do that? >> i think there's a chance. there might be one or two that might be more comfortable for her, but this is a confusing system. you have the team, you have the individual and then each apparatus has its own title and she has a chance to compete in all of those. she could choose one by one to go or not go. she can add to her medal count. >> what about suni lee? >> yeah, she can walk out of her with three or four olympic medals. >> we have talked about gymnastics and for good reason. we're celebrating suni lee's big accomplishment, but we had some incredible action in the pool.

>> yeah. swimming she's done -- she swam in the relay for the women and came back with a tremendous -- if the race is three or four more meters they would have won. they finished second and katie is having a terrific olympics and it was highlighted by her performance in the race. >> i have to mention bobby finke who we'll talk to a little bit from now. that was a race that no one expected him to win and at the top of the list was bobby finke himself. he didn't think he could get a medal until he got into the qualifiers. the announcers weren't talking to him when he made the final turn and then suddenly, he comes out of nowhere. >> extraordinary last 50 meters. i called the olympic trials in swimming in omaha and when we were preparing, the word is that the u.s. is not a very good distance swimmers so bobby finke is a great racer and when he gets in the pool with a chance,

we have all of this moisture coming up out of mexico. that monsoonal moisture we have been talking about. already, the ground is saturated. so another day of the strong moisture flow. more torrential rain on top of soil that is already saturated so we may be seeing some flash flooding developing from central california into the southwest. we are talking about anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain which doesn't sound like a lot, but the soil is already very saturated so it won't take much to push the rivers and the streams and the creeks over their beds. as far as the weather is concerned, we are looking at nice day as we work into the northeast. we have a few showers. some severe storms firing up today. we have a risk of severe weather from chicago all the way to the northeast. 66 million people at risk for that severe weather. hot, humid continuing along the coast. we are looking for that heat returning into the plains and

welcome back. it's 7:30 on the west coast, 11:30 thursday night here in tokyo. day seven of the olympics and we have hoda over at the gymnastics center, basking in the glow of suni lee's all-around gold. what a night. >> yeah. before we get back to hoda kotb let's look at the other 7:30 headlines. >> we'll start with a massive 8.2 earthquake striking the alaskan peninsula overnight, prompting tsunami warnings across the state.

[ sirens ] that was the scene earlier in kodiak, alaska, just after 10:00 local time. police there and across the region advising people to head for higher ground. many residents took shelter at local high schools. the quake hit about 50 miles south of perryville. it was followed by several aftershocks. two above magnitude 6.0. officials say there are no reports of injuries and that tsunami warnings have now been lifted. a major infrastructure package passed a key test vote in the senate on wednesday after more than a month of negotiations. the senate voted 67-32 to start the debate on the measure, getting 17 republicans to sign on. that proposal includes some $550 billion in new spending to build roads, public transit and broadband. a infomercial pioneer and product inventor ron popeil has died at the age of 86. >> i'll match up this play. and now anybody can use this machine.

lee's incredible performance. >> incredible performance. her incredible story. i mean, everything about her is remarkable. and as you heard, her family of course couldn't be more proud of what she's accomplished here. we have been checking in with them throughout suni's journey here which has been a tough one, but her gold also though is making history. she's the first american of mung heritage with a gold and she continues the dominance with a fifth straight gold. an incredible moment for team usa -- suni lee taking gold. a stunning victory for the 18-year-old who has stepped up and showed up after a long journey. all year, she's been the second best all-around gymnast in the u.s., finishing behind simone biles at the u.s. championships and trials. even before simone dropped out of the individual all-around competition here in tokyo, suni was a serious medal contender. a dream she and her family,

especially he were dad john, had been working towards for years. >> this has been our longest -- basically since i was a baby. he's been by my side through everything. >> reporter: just days before she competed at the nationals, john was paralyzed from the chest down after falling off a ladder. his long road to recovery inspiring suni to keep going. >> that's what i was thinking the whole time, and it helped me a lot. >> reporter: he told craig about the journey. >> i understand when she was starting out, that her dad was so committed to her success that he actually built a beam in the backyard. is that true? >> yeah, it is. it's still here. it's in the backyard right now. >> why did you do that? >> she goes to the gym, she practices. i have a beam here. so i couldn't afford a real beam so i built her one. >> reporter: after the pandemic

stopped her training in 2020, an ankle injury set her back even further, but she kept going to tokyo. representing her community. >> she will be the first mung american to be in the olympics. i'm proud, the family is proud. the community is very proud of her. >> reporter: now her proud family is looking on and waiting to be reunited. >> you know what i wanted to do, if you make it through the olympics, i'm going to run out there and do a back flip. i can't do it now. >> maybe not a back flip, but you can do some serious high fiving, right? >> yes. [ laughter ] >> oh, just so incredible. that moment with the mung community as well, celebrating her victory. now, simone biles and all the teammates were cheering her on and also jade carey who had a solid performance. suni still has two more events to compete in. she'll be competing sunday in

i'm thrilled to be the executive producer of golden because we did follow suni for a good amount of months on her journey to qualify for the olympics and never did we think that this would be possible. dreams do come true. >> well, listening to her dad say that he built that beam for her because he couldn't afford one and i interviewed him earlier in the show and he said, i'm so glad i built that beam. i mean, it was just like the most beautiful, touching thing because she has been up against a lot of odds. i mean, her dad again was paralyzed because he was trying to help a neighbor by cutting down a tree because they had a wedding going on. she lost several family members due to covid-19 and yet, here she stands, amid all the pressure. >> she did step up. probably feeling a good deal of pressure now that simone biles is no longer on the floor and knowing that we desperately needed an american on that podium for an all-around medal and she was able to withstand that pressure, stay focused, get

the job done. what i love about this young girl is that her community is supporting her every step of the way. whenever there's a shock to her family, it seems to multiply each and every time. throughout the docuseries i was producing, the relationship that she had with her coach, jess, i thought it was a special one. they were laughing together, smiling together. and she can naturally converse with him, and that's not so common in the sport of gymnastics. it ended with something special. >> well, she said to me she wanted to give her medal to her coach, to her dad, so many different people. i think this is incredible. because there's an american streak going on that we weren't quite frankly sure was going to continue. and we have won in this all-around for the past five consecutive olympics. and she won it again. what do you think this says about the u.s. domination in this sport? >> we are definitely still on

top. obviously, we fell a little short with the silver medal, but all four of the young girls are very proud of their achievements and now that we have the all-around gold i think it's special and she's the first individual of the mung community and i know that will inspire a number of young girls to pursue the sport of gymnastics and as people are talking about the mental health issues, listening to their inner voice and making smart decisions for them, it will be a much healthier environment down the road. >> yeah. well, dominique dawes, we want to say thank you. she made the mung community and the united states of america proud. it's a proud day for us when we're playing the national anthem. there wasn't a dry eye in the house. house. again, you can see suni's golden
