you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get a look at that commute in a minute. first we want to get to meteorologist kari hall with a look at that forecast. >> this morning we're starting out basically the same as we've seen throughout the week with a mostly clear morning. this is a live look in dublin. 580 looking good and our temperatures in the low 60s. we'll slowly warm up and then really start to heat up quickly going into the afternoon. it will still be hot fors the inland areas as we reach up to 99 degrees in brentwood, mid 80s for santa rosa and the south bay. we'll get a look ahead to our weekend forecast in a few minutes. what's that breaking news? >> bad news for the freeway as well as for a person killed as a result of a crash south 880 closed right now just after 2:30 this morning, a deadly crash or at least a crash res run investigation going on, south

880 at winston avenue. folks you see by the sign that sans winton avenue exit. you can exit the freeway, not take winton and get back on. it's a bypass lane right now and that's how they've been managing since 2:30 this morning. expected to clear by about 5:30 this morning. we've been in touch with chp another closure east 80 asou get into vallejo. >> we'll keep checking back with you. this morning new phase in the war against covid. a bombshell news report suggests the delta variant is as contagious and deadlier than chicken pox. an internal cdc document states, quote, we must acknowledge the war has changed. here's what the document revealed. infections of the delta variant may lead to more severe illness and spread by vaccinated people

just as easily as unvaccinated. those who are vaccinated are three times less likely to catch covid-19 and who are unvaccinated. something important here, the cdc still says vaccines remain effective and prevent hospitalization and deaths, but the cdc says in the report, that the vaccine works better against original strains. now this comes as the covid booster shot may be a part of our future. >> "today in the bay" cheryl hurd spoke with a man involved in the trial. >> they called me to come back in. >> reporter: clark was a part of the pfizer vaccine trial in september. now he's a part of another study to discover the effects of a booster shot. >> they tested me for covid and took blood, did blood work and told me we're going to give you a jab in the arm. it might be the real thing, it might be a placebo.

>> reporter: a separate study here in california, uc davis is also using 60 people from the previous trial. >> there's been a few complaints about sore a feeling a little b for the day >>eporter: it's som being studded here, israel is moving forward with pfizer vaccine booster shots to people over 60 starting sunday. it's the first government to do so to help stop the spread of the highly contagious delta variant. >> israel has already vaccinated 2,000 immuno suppressed people with a third dose with no severe adverse events. now we're rol out a national third dose campaign. >> reporter: stanford health dr. maldonado studies show the boost works extremely well but -- >> what the data doesn't show are when we might need those boosters and i'm not quite sure we're ready to say that we need boosters at this moment. >> reporter: pfizer reported

that the power of its two-dose vaccines declines slightly every two months. dr. maldonado says more data needs to be analyzed. she also says getting a vaccine is the best way to stay healthy and out of the emergency room. cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. if you go to the state capitol you better have a mask. sacramento joins l.a. and yolo in mandating masks indoors regardless of your vaccination status. the county says the case rates continue to climb due to the delta variant. in sacramento county, just under half of all people are fully vaccinated, well below the 62% statewide. the mandate started at midnight. eight of the nine bay area counties recommend masking saidy are considering a mandate. developing warning investors about -- investigators about potential financial losses

from the dixie wildfire now burning in butte cost. the warning is part of a sec filing far from being resolve. the fire has burned more than 220,000 acres and destroyed 40 structures. pg&e will also face criminal charges tied to a deadly wildfire last year. four people died in the zogg fire which destroyed 204 structures in shasta county last september. prosecutors say pg&e equipment sparked that fire while the exact charges have not been filed, the county has until next month to do so. a statement, pg&e said it does not agree with the conclusion about criminal charges and resolved some of the civil claims tied to the fire. another bay area city looking to make its outdoor dining parks permanent. walnut creek considering extending their plan past the end of the year.

last week they considered extending parklets through december. a the city is losing parking revenue but believe the parklets will help businesses bounce back from the pandemic. a sure sign of summer, both santa clara andr opens at noon dairy cattle show. sonoma county you will get all the fair food and carnival rides you want. both are offering covid vaccinations. they open at noon. another sign of summer, these warm temperatures we've been having. what are we in store for? >> more of the same. a wide range in temperatures across the bay area. whatever you had yesterday is what you'll see for today. and so as we head out the door this morning in santa rosa, we have some low 50s to start. nice, cool, but also cloudy and some patchy fog. we'll see our temperatures heating up by 11:00, in the

upper 60s because we're headed towards the mid 80s. martinez today reaching 89 degrees. 95 in livermore. we'll see some low 80s for palo alto, half moon bay up to 70 degrees. we'll see more of this comfortable weather into the weekend, slightly cooler for the inland valleys. mike, what's the update on the crash in hayward? >> good news for the traffic flow. as we say it's a deadly crash at winton avenue. two more lanes have opened. your exit lane, now your two right lanes are open as well. your three left lanes are still blocked by this crash. they have to clear the vehicles involved and so that will cause perhaps maybe another half hour there is what chp estimates. that will slow you down through hayward. nothing major coming off of 238. north of there is fine. towards the bay bridge. south of the san mateo bridge action 92.

eastbound 80 north of the carquinez bridge. 5:00 was the update they gave. however it may be opening in the next couple minutes. its counter commute in the north bay. a slight detour is marked there. south bay, smaller incidents, i'll call anything of big note coming up. 4:39 right now. starting monday, the vta bringing back temporary bus service along the light rail system. first street from paseo de san antonio to tasman drive. it was halted after the mass shooting at the rail yard may 26th. the bus service is free and runs every 30 minutes weekdays from 5:30 to 8:30. it will continue until light rail service resumes and there's still no firm estimate on when that potentially could be. 4:39. coming up here on "today in the bay," tesla rolling out the new features that all are coming to those new models and when you can expect to see them.

we'll see some sunshine again today as temperatures warm up. a ahead few minutes. >> your left lanes are blocked but they have reopened your right lanes, south 880 approaching wintin avenue. that will be in place another half hour. we'll update the progress and talk more about how you can work around that through the area. good morning. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. wall street set is to open lower on this final trading day of july. stocks were mostly higher yesterday with the dow up about 150 points after briefly touching a fresh record high. the nasdaq slipped, though, hurt by a 4% drop in facebook shares after the company's earnings disappointed. still, the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 have had a pretty good month led by the s&p which is up almost 3%. in focus today, reports on

income and spending, labor costs, manufacturing and consumer sentiment. on the economic front, in the meantime on the earnings front we're in the thick of it still. cate chevron, focus. disney taking on one of its super heros says there's no merit to the lawsuit filed by scarlet johansson. the star of "black widow." she alleges the company breached her contract when it offered the movie on streaming at the same time as in theaters. disney said it complied with johansson's contract and the release on disney plus enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20 million they say she has already been paid. now the lawsuit argues that the dual release of "black widow" reduced johansson's compensation based partly on box office receipts from what was supposed to be an exclusive run in

theaters. now apparently, though, you're going to be able to watch "black widow," that much disputed movie, near tesla, tesla rolling out a new software update that brings several features including the addition of disney plus to the theater mode app. that's an in dash entertainment app. you have to pay separately for a subscription-based services, like disney plus. it also requires that the vehicle be parked, which is good. it could give you something to do perhaps while you're waiting for your car to be charged. a separate update adds a car wash mode which primes the vehicle for scrubbing by closing the windows, locking the charging port and disabling the windshield or just sit and wait. it's like we have to be so entertained nowadays. >> i know. at first when you said that

here we go friday morning as we take a live look outside in dublin. we see cars on the road getting started with their day. where is everyone going? >> everybody up and out the door. >> going to the bottom of the screen you see that right there. >> that's where the party is. >> that's where the party is.ta

they can get their weekend started early, right? >> that's what i like to hear. >> a lot of people do that. >> we're here for you this morning before we head out the door anywhere. what's the forecast going to be like? nice? >> yeah. pretty nice this weekend. the smoke should is be clearing out a little bit more. our temperatures still cool near the coast and hot for the valleys. our air quality as we check out that live view in emeryville this morning. a little bit of some low clouds and the air quality has been improving for the south bay, santa clara valley, but the bay and the coast and east bay, we're just above the threshold where it goes from good to moderate. not too bad. as we get a look at our temperatures headed back to the mid to upper 80s today, for much of the south bay, head down to morgan hill, coming down a couple degrees but hot. we're seeing those hot temperatures in the inland east bay with antioch today reaching 97, 95 in danville and oakland today up to 73 degrees. now near the coast, daly city up

to 63, half moon bay 65, redwood city 80 today and san francisco in the low 60s. while our north bay temperatures still hot around ukiah and clearlake. santa rosa, a big drop in temperatur today. so continues and it's surging in quite a bit of showers and thunderstorms into the weekend into the sierra. for us going into next week,er with we are going to see ours temperatures coming down as we approach the pacific northwest. if you will be traveling from lake tahoe down to mammoth lakes up and down the sierra into southern california even around vegas this weekend, there will be flash flood watches in effect due to potential of some of those thunderstorms that do fire up, could produce flooding, especially in the sierra around the burn scar areas. we'll have to watch that very closely. heavy rainfall with some of the thunderstorms and then as we take a look at our temperatures, it's hot today. reaching into the mid 90s. then coming down for the rest of

the weekend. up to about 90 degrees into at least the middle of next week. san francisco holding steady, highs in the upper 60s and the fog rolling in. mike, you had that breaking news, is that the alert first c avenue, your right lane open, but left three closed another 20 minutes according to chp they think that's when they can clear the lanes. in the backup around a street may be a second crash. no injuries reported but that will complicate as you head down past winton avenue. keep those in mind. his per yan will get you past the scene. there are signals that won't catch you any time but you will be moving. some prefer that. the rest of the bay moves smoothly and the closure cleared through 84. back to you. >> thanks so much. 4:52. check your bank account and the mail, the irs announced

million will receive a refund of more than $1600. it's all for its program to adjust unemployment compensation from tax returns. the irs says it will continue reviewing and adjusting tax returns through the summer. this developing story here now in arizona, a swarm of bees, they've left one person dead and five others suffering from multiple stings. that attack happened northwest of tucson. the swarming bees came from a 100 pound open beehive sitting in the back yard tree. those six people were just passing through that area when they were stung hundreds of times. the navy charging a sailor for starting a fire that destroyed a warship docked off . the "bonhomme richard" burned extensive, electriccle and mechanical damage, it was scrapped when estimates the sai
