good morning. it's sunday, august 1st. the first day of the month, as we take a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. thank you for joining us for this special edition of "today in the bay," as we interrupt olympic coverage to bring you the latest. >> we have monsoonal moisture, and it has been feeling humid and tropical out there. depending on where you live, you will get to see a difference in

temperatures. right now san francisco, 57 degrees. look how beautiful it is. as we head in towards walnut creek, 59 degrees. look at the skies there. san jose, 60 degrees right now. by 10:00 or 11:00, temperatures are expected to warm up nicely into the 70s. by noon, 73 degrees. we have plenty of sunshine. why don't we go ahead and look at your headlines. this is what we are monitoring for the next several days, slight inland cooling and coastal clouds in the afternoon, and sierra thunderstorms. we have localized flash flooding and rain up there. i'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. kira. >> thank you so much. we begin this morning with a milestone for students in the east bay. a return to school for the very first time since the pandemic began. students and teachers in the

brentwood union school district returned to in-person learning this week. after three days there are multiple cases of coronavirus. here's the story. >> reporter: district superintendent of school says positive cases are among staff and students and spread out across the system's 11 campuses. a parent that did not want to speak on camera shared a letter from the principal at edna hill middle school. students here were last on campus, thursday july 29th. the nurses and student staff are doing contact tracing. the district did not detail how many of the cases are among students. brentwood union has elementary and middle schools so most of the students are not old enough to be vaccinated. the schools are in contra

county's board of district. >> as we go forward, we are hearing east contra costa, where the vaccination rate has been low and the spread high recently, and we're seeing that we are going to have more probably outbreaks or exposures. >> one parent that did not want to use her name has a son in elementary school. >> it's expected. it's expected. it's kind of soon and early, but i understand. like, we just came off break, so people are coming from vacation and getting tested. >> rojas says she's concerned about the rest of the year. >> i think they will shutdown again, especially with the delta variant that's coming about. >> but she and the first parent i talked with both say they already had covid-19 and don't plan on getting vaccinated. >> i am not anti-vaccine, i am right now.

>> i asked vanessa if she would get her shots to protect her daughter? >> so far, i'm going to say no to i to protect students during the upcoming school year. in a statement she says the district will host covid pop-up clinics. schools will have rapid response testing and the districts will offer at home testing kits for staff, students and their families. in santa clara county, a similar story, the numbers trending in the wrong direction. medical experts say it's imperative that people who are not vaccinated get the shot. marianne favro has that angle. >> these covid vaccines waiting for the arms of many people who

are hesitant to get a shot like now. people like juan carlos cortez who admits he waited for months to see if others reported adverse reactions, and now he feels confident about getting the vaccine. >> i think it's important for me and my family. >> a few miles away at the food max parking lot in san jose, more than 200 people received shots, and some say climbing cases of the delta variant prompted them to get the vaccine. a jump of nearly 200 cases from the previous week here. and this lady was hospitalized with the variant in india. >> it was awful. yeah, i was in the hospital. i didn't need any oxygen, but i was on, like, heavy medication and stuff. >> because she had covid, she says doctors told her she would

a live look outside from oracle park at the bay bridge lights. looks like a b in the background there overkland, your local forecast coming up. and then the dixie fire has slowed down, but that could quickly change due to thunderstorms and erratic winds. firefighters will be watching for flying embers. 66 structures have been destroyed, mostly homes. so far it has burned more than 244,000 acres. it's 30% contained, and it's the 11th largest fire in california state history. doordash workers went on strike protect being their pay yesterday. they demanded doordash show

workers their tips before delivery. workers say the company recently cut their pay before tips from $3 per delivery to just $2. they add because of the recent pay cut and higher gas prices they are not making any money. we reached out to doordash for comment and their statement says in part, quote, while we are monitoring conditions it's important to note it's a minority. parents, teachers, students, retirees and small business owners who come to the platform for the flexibility it provides. end quote. bart is moving forward and inching near prepandemic service levels. beginning tomorrow it will increase services on some lines and extend closing times to midnight monday through saturdays. bart will increase direct trips to sfo on sundays.

happening today, a group of bay area firefighters is empw the 20-year anniversary of 9/11. and they have been preparing for the bay to brooklyn ride. they have been training in los gatos. the trip is expected to take them 40 days. they leave from the santa clara fire station at 6:30 this morning, and best of luck to them. one person very happy right now, our own raj mathai after being in tokyo for two weeks, and he's finally out of quarantine and got to get out and explore the city. good morning. >> reporter: thank you. our quarantine is over. our 14-day quarantine has come to an end and we are out and about in tokyo this weekend.

first thing i did, it's just like being paroled, and i left the hotel and got in a taxicab and crossed the street and did a lot of walking and went to the world famous market. man, we found everything. do we go with the grilled lobster or meat and fruit -- forget it, we went with the bread and butter. for a point of reference, it was $30 for two of us to eat. there's no tipping here in japan, and we still wanted to show our appreciation, and we gave the restaurant staff our olympic pins. we had people giving us trinkets, and -- what are they

called? origamis. i don't know if i'm ever coming back. >> i can see why he doesn't want to come back. he and abby fernandez have daily chats about the olympics in tokyo and highlights. it's time to check in with vianey arana. >> it has been humid out there, and you have seen him talking about it being in the 90s and a nearby typhoon, and we are getting our own moisture not from a typhoon but from monsoon. i do have tokyo on my list. i will have him keep a list of all the restaurants he went to. it's about 57 degrees. how beautiful is the shot of the bay area all lit up. we are expecting a couple low clouds here and there and into the afternoon, and i want to

show you the temperatures. 59 degrees right now in walnut creek. a quick check of your temperature trend because this will showcase our our temperatures will climb in the 70s. it's going to be a little cooler today. we will go from the 50s into the 60s, and so notice the sunshine. we could get a couple low clouds early on, in the afternoon we will get perfect clearing with the temperatures in the 70s and 80s. 24-hour temperature change, and this depicts what we have seen in the past 24 hours. notice no noticeable differences, san jose, two degrees cooler. we have fog up through novato and santa rosa. we will get morning low clouds and also a chance to see drizzle around the coastline all the way from the north bay down through santa cruz, san francisco, and in through monterey as well. by the afternoon it clears out

quite beautifully, and then tonight into early tomorrow morning, you will get a chance to see the low clouds. let's get to the low temperatures. it will be a beautiful day ahead. san jose, 79 degrees. east san jose in the 80s. walnut creek, 88. then we still have areas in the 90s. look at concord and antioch in the upper 90s. definitely showcases our microclimates here in the bay area. san francisco, if you are heading to the 70, expect mid-60s. up through the north bay, clear lake, 95. ukiah, 93. if you are worried about the air quality you have nothing to worry about because we are dealing with good air quality from the north bay down to santa clara valley. this main brings some sort of impact on the bay area in the form of a temperature drop, but

definitely no rain in sight for us here in the bay area. over the next seven days there's a closer look of what to expect. we will remain in the 60s in san francisco and then we warm up a little bit by next weekend, friday and saturday, and then we will get to see 90s yet again, especially in the interior valleys. it's going to be sort of a tropical hot day. >> yeah. we'll take it, vianey. thank you so much. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, busted at the border. two american travelers are facing deep fines.

two u.s. travelers will have to pay more than $16,000 for trying to use fake covid vaccination records to get into canada. the unnamed americans were trying to enter toronto with fraudulent documents and lied about taking a precovid test.

as more people are looking to escape a year and a half of covid precautions, going on vacation is becoming dangerous but not for the reasons you might think. thieves are posing as property owners and stealing your money. nbc's catie beck has the story. >> after driving 15 hours from st. louis, missouri, to virginia beach, missy was ready to feel sand beneath her feet. >> we are excited. >> but hopes for a dream trip became nightly for her and 16 family members. >> did it occur to you i have been scammed? >> i think with the security code. >> first connected on the site, he spoke with her by phone several times, offering house rules and even the wi-fi code, and suddenly he was unreachable.

and china has the most gold medals. now to bragging rights for a local baseball team. san mateo american little league is the second place team in all of northern california and fourth in the state. it's the furthest any team in san mateo little league in history has gone. they won the runner up spot in the championship game. petaluma will go on to represent north cal next week to represent california in the little league world series. meet zodiac, a cattle dog mix. she's ready to find her forever home. she would be best as the only dog in an active home that will offer her plenty of exercise. let's check in with vianey

with one last check of the weather on this first day of august. >> it's going to be a beautiful sunday fun day. go outside and enjoy it. fantastic air quality. let's take a look right now. the 7-day forecast here, you can get an idea of what to expect. morning drizzle and 65 degrees in san francisco, monday and tuesday and wednesday in the upper 60s. will get breezy heading into tuesday night and wednesday, especially in san francisco. let's look at your inland temperatures, because once again, expect the upper 80s and low 90s for the interior valleys. monday and tuesday, we will keep the sunshine and see breezy tuesday into wednesday. what we are looking at now is a potential for rain to the north headed into saturday, and so this is a cooling trend right here.
