your morning. >> let's go to bob redell. this lit up the night sky that could be seen miles away to walnut creek. >> yes. i could see it as i was coming from livermore driving north on vasco road. this is the fire you're talking about behind me. about a 220 acre wildfire. we're on bethel island you're looking at bradford island. this fire started around 1:30 this morning and unfortunately as you look left to right there's a lot of wind fueling the fire. a few more left on their own. there's about 10 to 20 people who have decided to stay, try to protect their property and fight this fire against the advice of the fire department. the fire department has left the scene. they aren't fighting this fire for two reasons. one, bradford island isn't part of a fire protection district. they do not pay for fire

protection. two, it is an island and the fire department tells us typically they just let these kind of fires burn. most of the island is undeveloped. the chief tells me there's cattle out here and also pot farms so that could explain why people are staying behind. there's a ferry here, we saw somebody go on there with a trailer presumably to go get some of their animals and bring them back to safety. a couple of structures have been damaged and again, you've got about 10 to 20 people who according to the battalion chief will try to stay out and fight this fire or survive it until it burns itself out because they don't have any fire protection equipment on there. the fire department did send i'm talking about east contra costa county fire protection district, they sent an engine on the fer troy help people out, chp had a helicopter out here and two rescue boats. there's no harbor over there. there's just very limited access unless you were to take the ferry. the fire department has left the scene. they did offer these people

rescue, but it's not their obligation to put the fire out. the people on the island, 220 acres is burning. reporting live on bethel island, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> hope they're okay. thanks for that update. kari has been watching the weather conditions in that area as well. >> probably a big distraction for everyone in the distance looking at the smoke billowing with the winds kicking it up farther as we've seen the winds increasing at about 17 miles per hour right now, but as high as 20, 22 miles per hour. as we go into today we are going to see our temperatures heating up. hopefully that gets resolved soon as we're going to see highs ranging from the low 90s in the inland valleys to the low 60s near the coast. another look at the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> we'll check back with you. you're waking up to breaking news out of tokyo. fans of simone biles have something to look forward to this morning. >> want to send it out to raj mathai live in tokyo. you have the latest on this. we get to see her perform.

>> we got a lot going on. it's not a sleep yes monday morning. it's a lively monday night. little after 10:00 local time in japan. simone biles is in. she's been opting out for mental health reasons for the past three individual events, but she is in now for the final individual event, the finals of the balance beam. she will be competing tomorrow. that is good news. also on this monday, ready for this, this is like a jolt of coffee before you have your coffee, team usa the women's soccer team loses to canada. the canadians in the red jerseys win on a penalty kick. 1-0 the final. team usa are not out, they go to the bronze medal game. in the pool, ryan murphy wins gold. the 4 by 100 medley relay. he graduated from cal a couple years ago, lives in berkeley and says i love it there and not leaving the bay monday.

we're going to see in just a few minutes, take you inside the world famous fish market here in tokyo and kind of tell you, what this is. yeah. we do eat it. >> little early for that. >> yeah. >> we'll see you in a couple minutes. >> thanks. >> bye. while we wait for that, the medal count this morning. u.s. still leading the way with 62 medals total followed by china and the russian olympic committee. china continues to have the most gold medals with 28, u.s. second with 21. switching gears this morning as we take a live look in san francisco and this is one of the bay area counties where millennials are leading the way when it comes to new covid cases. i want to show you a graph showing you the new cases in sf among adults 25 to 39. it jumped to 50% in july up from 35% in march. we did check around overnight, the same phenomenon happening in other bay area counties including alameda and in santa

clara. new this morning, san francisco's bars proof of vaccination requirement, well that is reportedly catching on elsewhere. some san jose bars are starting a similar thing. there's no city bar alliance like the one in san francisco so in the south bay, a lot of bar owners are doing it on their own. customers can show proof of a negative covid test. it's not just the bay area bars and restaurants across california are rethinking their vaccination requirements. that includes some places in l.a. and san diego counties. more businesses are following the lead of san francisco bars which recently started requiring proof of vaccination or a negative covid test. this is all due to the most recent surge in cases. the owner of one san diego night spot says most customers agree. >> looking at the numbers and what's happening with the new delta variant, we thought it would be safe for our guests and our staff and our community that we actually make our indoor dance area area where our events are to be

vaccination proof only. >> san diego county recently saw its highest number of new cases since early february. if you're planning to go to bottle rock in napa next month you will need proof of vaccination or a negative covid test. staff members will be checking all festival goers during the three-day event from september 3rd to the 5th. masks will be recommended but not required for the outdoor event. happening today, vta is bringing back temporary bus service along a portion of the light rail system shut down from the tragic mass shooting. the busses will operate along first street in san jose from paseo de san antonio to bay point station and then over to the milpitas transit center along tasman driving. you can ride for free. light rail service has been suspended since the rail yard rampage may 26th. vta says it still doesn't know when the train service will resume. 6:07. let's take a peek outside. maybe before you head out the door this morning. live look at san francisco. kari, pretty mild temperatures

this week. >> yeah. looks pretty good. it's a beautiful start to our monday morning. we've seen the fog off the coast and we have a clear view. a look at the golden gate bridge this morning, another vantage point. i wanted to show you what it looks like over san jose as you're waking up and see the orange know through the blinds, get that camera ready, take a nice shot of our beautiful sunrise. it's just about under way about four minutes away. we'll see the sun coming over the hills. right now temperatures in the upper 50s, headed toward the mid 70s for later this morning into the afternoon with our highs reaching up to about 80 degrees and 91 today in concord. napa today reaching 81 and some mid 60s in san francisco. it stays pretty much like this week. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. you're seeing different patterns at two bridges. >> first the bay bridge toll plaza we saw that backup a little stronger in the beginning and now it's easing up and clearing as we get chose to just after 6:00. at 6:00 things started to move better.

i think they sped the metering lights up because traffic down the east shore freeway wasn't as heavy as they thought it might have been with early signs. there's more slowing and more bunching up down the decline will sort itself out as they figure out the right speed. the second bridge would be eastbound across the richmond or san raphael to richmond bridge. it's been approved until 2:00. usually not problem but this morning we saw slowing for the last ten minutes. it's just cleared in the area. that was unusual coming eastbound. westbound is the push. a little more slowing through concord. a little build all around the bay. nothing big of note. back to you. >> thank you very much. just in to our newsroom this hour, controversial comedian kathy griffen announcing on twitter she has lung cancer. in a letter to her twitter page she says she has stage 1 cancer and that her doctors are optimistic about her prognosis. she says she's preparing to have surgery to have her left lung removed. she says hopefully she'll not

were victims of zoom bombing, where unwanted and sometimes very crude guests joined our meetings. zoom has reached a settlement in a class-action suit over zoom bombing. if you pay a subscription you will get money back. san francisco square over the weekend said it made record profits and growth as people used cash less and less. it's buying the buy now pay later company afterpay for $29 billion in stock. you can buy something on credit through square and not your credit card. the senate made a major move towards approving first infrastructure bill. we'll talk more about it as we talk politics in a half hour. but one of the ways they're going to pay for it is by cracking down on taxes on cyber cryptocurrency. you always had to pay big taxes if you made money on bitcoin, but the feds will make double sure that you do. out to the futures this morning, looks like we'll have a good start to august. the s&p 500 close to its

all-time highs. and marcus and laura, the kinetic sculpture at the tech museum created by george rhodes. he passed away a few days ago at the age of 95. his sculptures which features balls rolling down ramps and making music are all over the united states. we were saying there's a little one in the airport at sjc but children's hospitals, all kinds of places. that was supposed to go inside the tech museum, but it's super noisy. it's intentionally noisy. it makes music so they put it up. >> i think there's one if i'm not mistaken at st. jude's children's hospital in memphis. >> i'm sure. >> when you say that, i remember that. >> yes. one guy he's just done it all over the u.s. >> my doctor had an appointment recently and we stood there, tried to videotape it, but it's hard to follow. >> very cool. >> thank you, scott. 6:15 right now. california bracing for a possible bacon shortage.

that's due to new animal welfare rules set to take effect next year. most pork producers are unprepared to comply with the new rule that will require more space for breeding pigs. experts say the farm modifications may cause bacon prices across the state to jump by 60%. turning now to tokyo, raj mathai, one of the few lucky people who gets to cover the olympic games and eating there too. >> lucky guy he is. he's being released from the quarantine and getting a chance to explore the city a little bit. joining us now live and raj, you were able to visit somewhere a lot of family dinners in tokyo kind of depend on there. >> oh, this is it. not just tokyo, dippers across the world. if you go it high-end sushi places around the world, the sushi usually starts here in tokyo at one of the world famous markets here. when you come to tokyo you have to do a few things, among the top three things you have to do

>> reporter: it's split into two locations and one of the largest wholesale super markets in the world. it opened in the 1600s and it's still the pulse of tokyo. we loved every minute of it and laura and marcus and the gang back home, so there's a lot of things to look at. there's a lot of things to sample. one of the things i had no idea about what they call a sea pineapple. this is what it looks like. looks weird here. you have a shot of this. it's not a pineapple, believe me. nothing to do with the sweetness of a pineapple. it's like a sea urchin so they opened it up for me. it's dripping. it looks a little odd. it's actually okay. it's like sea urchin. >> what does it taste like? salty? >> it tastes a bit like calamari with a little bitterness. a bitter calamari.

morning, and we are also attracting the very high humidity. those hot temperatures there. this is what raj is dealing with. highs in the low 90s and mid 90s and then some off and on showers and thunderstorms and that humidity at times makes it feel hotter. meanwhile, we had a few thunderstorms not here in the bay area but over yosemite and this was over the weekend a picture i snapped. can you see the lightning strike there. i paused it so i could show that lightning that was approaching that we saw as we approached yosemite and posted it on @kari hall weather on facebook and instagram. our high temperatures reaching 83 in cupertino, 89 gilroy. we're going to feel the heat for the inland east bay but nice and comfortable near the bay and redwood city reaching the mid 70s and for san francisco we're still in the 60s today. but as hot as 99 in clearlake and napa reaching 81. go through the week not a lot of

changes here. there will be rain around the pacific northwest and some fog near our coast, but the stronger ocean breeze that we'll see between wednesday and thursday will cool our temperatures a few degrees. we're going from the upper 80s and low 90s to mid 80s by mid week and goes right back up. not a whole lot of changes here. we're staying in the weather pattern with hot valley temperatures. mike, you're checking in again on san jose's commute. >> we have a little different pattern down here. we saw more slowing. it was just the second burst that we don't usually see just after 6:00. it sortds itself out. the sensors were showing a bit of slowing, sticking around, what must have been someone tapping the brakes, cutting someone off, will ripple back up to oakland road. no crashes or injuries or problems for the south bay commute. it's back to what we expect another slowing should start at about 6:40. silicon valley, just starting, tri-valley going fine. the bay bridge backup, less than it was before.

good morning. we were glad to open toors for jorge romero in san jose. here's what happened. he paid expedia for a one night stay at quality inn and suites. the hotel took his credit card for incidentals. standard practice. he didn't have any incidentals. when he checked out he says the front desk confirmed the stay was prepaid and he was set. at home he noticed the quality inn charged his credit card an extra $109. he asked the hotel and expedia to reverse it for weeks unsuccessfully. he asked us to help. we contacted expedia and the how d hotel. the quality inn rep told us we had a server problem that day.

for miles across contra costa county. it is happening on bradford island next to bethel island. a pretty remote area but people do live there. "today in the bay's" bob redell has been reporting there for us all morning long and joins us live. you've been telling us that firefighters left the scene but the fire is not out. >> reporter: correct. this island, bradford island behind me, 220 acre wildfire is burning is not part of any fire protection district. the people who live here do not pay for fire protect, so the east contra costa county fire protection did come out here overnight after the fire started around 1:30 to offer rescue to people. they want to save people's lives if that's needed, but only a couple people took them up on the offer. about 15 to 25 people hiv here and our understanding 10 to 20 have decided to stay and protect whatever structures and property they have and to fight this

fire. it's my opinion within the past 30 to 60 minutes maybe the fire isn't as intense as it was before, but we have this wind that's blowing from the left side to the right side of your tv screen so it's not like this fire is going to be going out any time soon. the fire protection district pointed out when you have a fire on an island like this they do let it burn out. battalion chief did tell me that his understanding is that there's a cattle farmers out here and pot farmers out here which might explain why both sides decided to stay on the island. there is a ferry that can take people to the island. there was a gentleman that came by a little bit earlier with an animal trailer to goen the island presumably to try to pick up animals. we did see him driving by on the island. it's not clear what animals he might have picked up. looking at a google view view of the island there's only a couple structures.

it's not clear what else there is to burn, how much in terms of foliage or dry brush may be out there. live on bethel island, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we know you'll keep your eye on that. >> meteorologist kari hall is keeping track on what's going on with the conditions. how is it for that fire fight out there. >> we have a very view from mt. diablo looking towards bradford island. you can see the smoke and flames that are going away from it. all being pushed by some pretty strong winds out of the west/southwest at about 20 miles per hour and the temperature cool at 60 degrees. humidity is high. hopefully soon we'll see those flames get put out because it's a big distraction across the east bay. >> thank you very much. 6:33 right now. now to the pandemic and the new milestone in the united states. there's now been 35 million confirmed covid cases. more than 616,000 people have died. california has recorded nearly

43,000 new cases in just the last few days. just yesterday alone, nearly 4,000 cases were reported. so far, slightly over 10% of the state's population has contracted covid-19 since pande. california is the first state to hit that marker. some bay area counties may be getting closer to officially reinstating the rules requiring wearing masks indoors. >> "today in the bay's" cierra johnson live in san francisco. this is a hope to try to stop the fast moving delta variant. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, that's exactly right. i was out and about over the week and did see folks opting to wear their masks and others opting to not wear their masks indoors. in a matter of time some folks some some counties may not have the option, two counties we know of, san mateo and san francisco counties. they both told nbc bay area news they're exploring an indoor mask mandate because of the high transmission levels.

now right now, there is no set timeline for reintroducing a mask mandate but both counties are continuing to still encourage those who have not been vaccinated to get their covid vaccination. take a listen to dr. grant colfax with san francisco explain where san francisco county is in the process of reissuing an indoor mask mandate. >> we are very vigorously exploring issuing an indoor mask mandate with regard to that. >> up north in sonoma county the press democrat reporting health officials are keeping a close eye on the state of their covid numbers. there was a high school there that were about ten high school athletes went on an out-of-town trip and came back and did test positive for covid. there was a smaller outbreak at the county jail where about 30 inmates tested positive for covid. not only sonoma, not only san francisco, it's a lot of

communities here in the bay area grappling with not only covid but the delta variant. live in san francisco, cierra johnson, for "today in the bay." >> thank you. with schools across the bay area set to reopen, a new cluster of covid cases may leave parents feeling uneasy. one contra costa county school district is reporting more than a dozen new cases among students and staff. kris sanchez joins us now. you did the story, they just returned to campus last week. >> we were talking about the brentwood union school district going back to school last wednesday. we were there. to hear of an outbreak after three days of school, it is a little unnerving. what we know about the brentwood union outbreak there are currently 15 cases among students and staff, one of which we know happened at edna hill middle school. the school nurse and other district staff are conducting contract tracing and may notify more people of potential exposure. classes just resumed last wednesday, july 28th, so it is

possible and likely that those 15 people who are positive were infected before the return to campus. here's ha some parents in brentwood told us. >> it's expected. it's kind of soon and early but i understand. we just came off break. people are coming from vacation and getting tested. >> i think they're going to shut down again. especially with this delta variant that's coming about. >> reporter: now brentwood union has 11 elementary schools and middle schools so most of their students are too young to be vaccinated. as of saturday, just 66% of contra costa county residents were fully vaccinated and 71% at least one shot. a few moments ago you heard from a pediatric infectious disease specialist from stanford to reiterate her point that says that the data throughout the pandemic last year and a half of school time shows kids who contracted covid are not getting sick at school. they are getting infected off

campus at home and in community activities like sports where there are not proper protocols. she says urge the adults in your kids' lives to get vaccinated or mask up when they're around. despite rising covid concerns, city hall in san jose will reopen to the public today. all floors and departments will open with limited staffing. many first floor services will require an appointment. it is 6:38 on your monday morning. let's take a peek outside. this time to the east bay and walnut creek. look at the sun rising over the bay area making way for a nice day on tap. the temperatures with kari. >> maybe a little bit of smoke drifting into the east bay. see that from the distance. then in the upper levels of the atmosphere, we are seeing a lot of that smoke causing an orange sunrise over the south bay. as you're looking out the door it's definitely very bright, but at least the smoke that we're monitoring is in the upper levels of the atmosphere. so our air quality starting out

pretty good this morning and what we're expecting for today as we get a strong westerly wind it's going to help clear the air more. also cause a wide range in temperatures as we go from the mid 60s near the coast to the low 90s to the inland areas. mike, you're tracking a hillside fire near castro valley. >> we're on edge when we hear reports of fire given the current conditions and the fire we've been talking about, bradford island as well. this is in castro valley towards contra costa county out of alameda county near the dublin grade. it's around paolo verde road or ian canyon road. it's not blocking any lanes but it was called out to chp. folks noticed smoke and were going to check it out. typical flow of traffic through silicon valley and the peninsula, the city, westbound a push starts to build but the bay bridge toll plaza just now starting to back up which is a little late this morning. >> pretty busy this morning.

and son charged in the 1996 murder of kristin smart will appear in court. investigators say 19-year-old smart was last seen leaving a party with fellow cal poly student paul flores who offered to walk her back to the dorm. he and his father ruben were arrested this year after evidence discovered in their homes linking both to kristen's murder. they are set to appear for a hearing this morning. it is quarter to 7:00 right now, president biden is praising both parties in the senate for their deal on infrastructure. >> 2700 pages long. >> i've been reading it at my desk and i am not near finished. they reached a deal sunday but this is important. there are details in what we're reading like replacing every lead pipe in america to make sure that americans have cleaner water. >> for decades elected officials have talked about addressing our nation's infrastructure. this infrastructure bill turns that talk into reality. without raising taxes on hardworking americans, or adding to our debt.

special election in ohio to fill an empty congressional seat. it's going to be another test of how much power donald trump still has. he endorsed a candidate in texas who lost last week. he endorsed a candidate for tomorrow's election in ohio as on friday the doj said congress can look at trump's taxes and directed the irs to turn them over. new documents surfaced showing how the then president pressured the department of justice to declare the election fraudulent a even after bill barr said the elections were clean. notes taken during a call with the acting attorney general and the deputy attorney general both appointed by trump show trump told them, quote, just say the election was fraudulent. leave the rest to me and the republican congressmen. the doj did not declare it fraudulent. they said there was no evidence of widespread fraud. we're watching carefully this movement of the first infrastructure bill. it sounds like they've got this

taking a look at the golden gate bridge and no fog. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds for today. a look at our south bay, we will still have a wide range in temperatures. we're looking at a high of 76 in milpitas, downtown san jose reaching 80 degrees and 85 in los gatos. some upper 80s for the south county. the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. freemont will reach 78 degrees, see low 90s in antioch today and half moon bay up to 62 with some sunshine here and there. san mateo reaching 70. the mission district today reaching 67 degrees. really no changes from the weather we've had recently as our highs in the north bay are from about 85 in novato to 99 degrees in clearlake. as we go through the forecast, we are going to see minor changes temperature wise. lot more fog building near the coast by the middle of the week as the storm system passes to the north of us. it's going to bring rain across the pacific northwest and, of course, it misses the bay area

but we are going to see more gusty winds kicking up going to bring down our temperatures for the inland areas. as it brings in some of that cooler ocean air. for the next couple days we're looking at upper 80s and low 90s for our warmest spots inland and mid 60s along the coast and in san francisco. mike, waiting patiently. >> very nicely, patiently politely. the bay bridge toll plaza in fact, we've seen the ebb and flow. i'm trying to figure out why it's having this pattern. we're seeing the backup fill in the toll plaza and clear out again and back and forth right now it's an easy drive, just ten minutes agos it was packed. over here the richmond side of the san raphael bridge suddenly sees more traffic flow. it's not like there's a shift going on there. it's your typical westbound commute. see the arrows, 37 included in that and slowing through concord for highway 4 heading down to 42. smaller crashes are to the shoulder throughout the east bay so no major slowing. back over to you. >> thank you very much. happening now, 6:51, san

who live there and they said who wants to leave. only two people took them up on the offer and a few more left on their own. it's our understanding there's 10 to 20 out there who decided to stay on the island to protect their property. the fire department is not fighting this fire for a couple reasons. one, the people who live here do not pay into any sort of fire protection district and not in a fire protection district and it's an island and the fire department says with an island like this we let it burn. if you look at google maps this island is undeveloped. it's a lot of greenery. i don't know how much of that is dry fuel or not. there's a few structures, presumably the homes, a couple of those have been damaged. the one downside of this as you can tell it's very windy out here. you have the wind blowing if the left to the right so it's not clear how long it will be before the fire burns itself out. live here on bethel island, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the very latest live there. due to increasing covid infections from the delta variant some south bay counties
