wear that mask. it is unfortunate that we have to do this at this point in the pandemic. none of us wanted to be here. but the virus has changed. >> reporter: the health officers say there's no evidence that delta can be spread by even the fully vaccinated. so restaurants where you can only take the mask off when you are eating and drinking is another enforcement challenge. >> people may not always like it, but we have an obligation to you know, follow the cdc guidelines and recommendations. >> reporter: doctors say masks are important, vaccines are the best protection. adding nearly all covid recent hospitalizations are unvaccinated patients. businesses are required to enforce the mask mandate.

enforcing it? businesses will be in ch for employees and customers. they fear the new rule is going to scare away the customers that they just got back in. >> we are talking about a wide range. big businesses, and let's not forget the hundreds of millions of dollars on the line for san francisco when it comes to tourism. now, the most part, the businesses and people we spoke to today say they understand and are in favor of the new man date which says people who are inside in public places must mask up. but some businesses tell us they have had trouble in the past with customers who don't want to wear a mask. they say they are worried this is a step backwards and will lead to more antagonismsterday, people like, not really comfortable with wearing the

protocol, and said they anticipate a certain number of cases. 17 students and one staff member are testing positive. 45 students are showing symptoms but not testing positive yet. they hope the numbers don't continue to go up. >> i think that's the hardest part for adults we know their missing out. we know they need that, but we are scared for their health. >> the superintendent said they have no plan to halt inperson learning. the school district said there's no evidence that any of the cases were contracted on school property. >> the outbreak in brentwood schools is raising flags for other districts for parents to reopen in the next few weeks. the south bay's largest district is holding new teacher orientation sessions with classes starting in two weeks. we are told how teachers and staff are preparing and how the district is reacting to the

surge in cases this close to the first day of school. >> reporter: today it's full speed ahead for the san jose unified as all inperson instruction is available, but those that want to stay at home does not seem to be worried by a cluster of new cases else wrmpt a couple of weeks away for if the tirs day of school. the san jose unified school district had some teachers in class. it was new teacher orientation day in office and online. the president of the 1500 member san jose teacher's association said that new outbreaks like the one in brentwood have not dimmed enthusiasm. >> they are excited to be back with students and excited to be back with something that feels closer to normal. >> reporter: they say the public health department will guide teachers and the district if and when outbreaks happen here. >> we have multiple cases particularly among unvaccinated

students in the lower grade levels that may make it necessary to have individual classrooms quarantining and that will be handled on a case by case basis. >> the superintendent is confident about their protocols. >> case numbers vary. and so, we are constantly monitoring our context. >> in addition to the protocols. 90% of the teachers have been account vaccinated and those that choose not to will wear masks and get tested twice a week. in san jose, robert honda, nbc bay area news. >> nbc bay area responds to a south bay viewer who's hotel bill was double what he

at the immediate coast line. so, this system, certainly helping to pull through for us as we go through the next couple of days. let's get a look at the coastline. a little bit of cloud cover and some of it to san jose and gilroy, and low clouds through the north bay. again, tomorrow morning. as we roll through the afternoon. we get our sunshine back for 99% of us and then right there at the coast line, we will hang on to the cloud cover w the cooler pattern setting up, we will start it off on the chilly side, and down to 56 for the tri-valley and peninsula 57 and the south bay at 55 and we have 56 here for the east bay and my chilliest weather in the north bay. 53 degrees. daytime highs are g not disappoint. so down in the south bay, you see the last to low 80s from san jose cooper tino, get away from the bay. we are at 89 in morgan hill,

that is manageable. right here through the east bay. 91 in livermore, and near concord, and 74 degrees. we will stay with the mid 70s trend in red wood city at 75. san francisco 60s from downtown to the engel side, breezy, and typical light jacket weather through the afternoon and for the north bay, 74 in milly valley. 87 in sonoma. overall temperatures really looking good for us. but the one thing that i want to let you know about is a bit of haze coming in. it's nothing in terms of dangerous smoke. but we will see some haze coming in from the fires off to the north. you can see it tomorrow evening, it's that light blue color. considered moderate, but the worst of that smoke, very worst oift, is right up near the dickey fire and also also, the tampa fire. the seven-day forecast forecast, notice in san francisco, 60s, hold on steady for us and for the inland valleys.
