very much like yesterday reaching 80 degrees in san jose, 86 in martinez and 81 in santa rosa. we'll take a look ahead to the rest of the week coming up. you're seeing some fog at the golden gate bridge. >> i know kari for your department that's a duh. chp did shout it out, lights kind of go away at the south tower. they're there and you can see just fine from the sensors that folks are traveling north. a crew, puts the truck, the zipper truck is not active in that area. there's a little bit of slowing in places popping up and clearing up. overall, the traffic sensors i'll talk about what is going on for oakland. back to you. something for all of us, if you go indoors wear a mask. most bay area counties will require it. the mandate went into effect at midnight. eight have joined together to issue the order, alameda, contra

costa county, san francisco, san mateo, sonoma, and the city of berkeley. napa and solano counties are the two holdouts. two local health officials say everyone must mask up, including those who are vaccinated because they can still spread the virus easily if infected with the delta variant even though they are far less likely to get covid. "today in the bay" "today in the bay's" ian cull has what you need to know. >> reporter: the mask mandate is back. if you head into the grocery store or anywhere where there's someone you don't live with you have to put one on. the new mask mandate includes all bay area counties except for solano and napa. the main reason, new evidence shows the vaccinated can still spread the delta variant without symptoms. >> wear that mask. it is unfortunate that we have to do this at this point in the pandemic. none of us want to be here, but the virus has changed. >> in san francisco, where cable cars started rolling again for

the first time in more than a year, mayor london breed says masking up should help avoid more restrictions. >> we don't want to shut this city or this country down any t school and everything in between depends on it. >> if it was just infection, you know, it would be one thing, but the fact that hospitalizations are going up, hospitals are starting to fill, that's making a lot of people nervous and worried. >> reporter: ucsf doctor agrees with bringing back masks indoors. california has the most covid patients since march 3rd. almost all are not vaccinated. when will the mandate end? health officers aren't sure. the doctor expects it will be when hospitals empty out again. >> nationally many people are modelling things that will hit the country in the middle of october. we may get there sooner in the

bay area because, again, we have some of the highest vaccinated communitiness the country. >> reporter: ian cull, "today in the bay". >> let them breathe. that is the name and the rallying cry for a group in contra costa county. they're opposed to students forced to wear masks in schools and planning to rally outside a board meeting in danville. the organization's founder says that masks are interfering with children's mental health, social development and academic achievement. >> we want the school boards to have local control back to do what's right for their communities and families need that opportunity to make their own choices and own health care decisions because we are seeing our children suffering behind the mask. >> and she says that her group is suing governor newsom and state health officials to do away with the mask mandate in grades k through 12. more bay area teachers calling for proof of vaccination and mask requirements.

east bay teachers are holding a virtual event demanding action and in the report, public school in a discussion with marin's deputy looking for anyone that can identify this woman. take a look at your screen. she was brought in on saturday in critical condition. she is 30 years old, 510, 240 pounds rnlgs a tattoo on her right arm with two skulls with bones. if you have any information you are asked to call the hospital. a follow-up this morning on the wildfire that broke out in san jose river delta on bradford island. the island is said to be flooded to stop the flames. only a couple dozen people live there. the island has no fire service and no bridges. it's about 2,000 acres and a couple hundred acres have burned. no word yet on when exactly crews will flood the island which lies below sea level. developing right now, a

slight step back for firefighters on the front lines of the dixie wildfire. new evacuation orders are going out for people in greenville. at the same time structures are threatened and containment has grown to 35%. it has burned 250 acres since it started. pg&e is working with the forest service looking into the possibility that its equipment sparked a smaller fire that actually merged into the dixie fire more than two weeks ago. a new report from cal fire putting into perspective the damaging impact of last year's historic wildfire season in california. the agency says more than 4.2 million acres burned statewide due to the flames. that's about the size of l.a., orange, santa cruz and santa clara counties combined. a total of 31 people, including three firefighters, lost their lives as a result of the wildfires. california fire released an estimated 112 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the

atmosphere as well. fighting last year's fire cost the state more that be a billion dollars. pg&e will brief state utility leaders on its handling of the public safety power shutoffs meant to reduce wildfire risks. today is day two of a hearing looking into how utilities are managing the shutoffs. critics argue it's been too widespread and commonplace and pg&e leaders are testifying this afternoon. all right. 4:38, tuesday morning now. made it through monday. kari has a look at our forecast. >> still more of the same. not a whole lot of change here and i think we'll take it. it's been a nice little break. we're starting out the morning in antioch with temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s and mostly clear. heading through the day it's going to start to warmup quickly and another warm one into the mid 90s for the spots in the inland east bay. for the north bay mid 80s, san jose reaching 80 degrees, 77 in

palo alto, and livermore up to 91. as we go through the forecast only some minor changes throughout the week. we'll talk more about that in just a few minutes. mike, how is it looking heading out the door? >> we have some construction. i have my eye the webster tube, the last couple minutes had the sensors light up. they've reopened the tube from the scheduled maintenance. it was only going to go to 4:30 or 5:00 at the latest. the park street bridge no longer necessary as an alternate. getting across the water, san mateo and dumbarton bridges are moving smoothly and your travel times, highway 4 out of antioch fine at speed in towards 242 in concord. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up here on "today in the bay," possible relief for college students. the new program from a major textbook publisher that could save students money. popping off, why you could be paying more for bubble wrap. a live look this morning at the bay bridge toll plaza.

and marriott. pierson, the largest publisher of college textbooks is launching a service for digital books. it will be available on campuses this fall. students can pay $9.99 a month to access one textbook at a time or $14.99 for access to the full library of 1500 e-books and study aids like flash cards. it's going to cost you a little bit more to protect your breakables with bubble wrap. sealed air, that's the company that makes the iconic bubble wrap, and other packaging and shipping products, will increase prices from 5 to 10% in september. anywhere between that range. that's because of rising costs as well as inflation and a climate it actually expects to continue for some time, higher prices, so it's not something we want to hear but we're seeing that in a lot of our news reports as of late. >> really interesting. thanks. coming up here on "today in the bay," meteorologist kari hall tracking those conditions on the foggy and cloudy morning

good tuesday morning. live look outside this morning, look at that. in dublin, as we get started with today. cars on the road, people moving about and we've got your news ready to go. >> that's right. >> before we get to the news got to get to that forecast for today. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. >> not bad. we've enjoyed some pretty nice weather here across the bay area and as we're starting out a live look in emeryville. our air quality today, it's starting to get slightly unhealthy for people who may be sensitive to some of the smoke, especially in santa clara valley, the coast and bay. elsewhere it is looking pretty good, staying below the 50 number that we use to measure how much smoke is in the air. as we look at our near surface smoke model it does show that in

san francisco, as well as parts of the east bay, later on this evening, this is tonight, we can see a little bit more of that smoke drifting in and it makes for some colorful sunsets. here's what's going on, new fires going, especially farther to the north, up around redding. the panther fire has really exploded and so some of that smoke is going to move into parts of the north bay, get drawn into the marine layer for the next couple days. we'll monitor air quality and the south bay, our high temperatures reaching up to 81 degrees in cupertino, 89 for a high in morgan hill and as you check out the seven-day forecast, stuff at the bottom of the screen looking steady. mid 60s for daly city and half moon bay as well as san francisco, mostly in the mid 60s this afternoon and still hot in clearlake and ukiah, reaching into the upper 90s. much more comfortable in santa

rosa with a high of 81 degrees today. overall, once again, our weather pattern not changing, but we'll see more fog and also some light showers just off the coast. for of the much bay area we'll get more of an ocean breeze and that's going to keep our temperatures fluctuating over the next few days with low 90s this afternoon and some mid 80s for the end of the week. and then you can see on friday we see those temperatures spike up to 93 degrees. overall it's going to be just slightly warmer compared to what we've seen. the coastal areas staying cool, still 60s continuing there. mike you're seeing unusual slowing in the tri-valley. >> weird pattern, the green over here for most of 608 and the group along the peninsula, changed now, okay, 84 we had sort of polka dots, yellow, green and orange, and now it's a little bit of slowing. it's so early, traffic is so light, one or two vehicles going more slowly would cause that and what looked like a big traffic

jam, not cleared. there you go, altamont pass, there's westbound slowing for 580, typical there, the bridges just fine getting down towards the east shorege. all lanes of highway 4 in this is after a shooting. chp says this happened about 8:00 last night. the section between summersville road and hill crest avenue was closed for hours due to that investigation. there's no word on the number of people injured or extent of their injuries. last week two people were shot along highway 4 east of port of chicago highway in concord. one woman died there. so far no word on arrests in either of those incidents. southern california conservative leaders plan to gather virtually to support efforts to recall governor newsom. it comes as ballots for the gubernatorial recall election will go out in two weeks. >> the candidates hoping to replace governor newsom will dwooebts later this week.

jean elle has more on what analysts say governor newsom has to do to save his job. >> here's the deal with the recall of governor newsom. >> reporter: governor gavin newsom is lining up big name democrats for television ads opposing the effort to recall him. more than 40 candidates hoping to replace newsom will be on the ballot and five will debate on wednesday. newsom is not participating. in a statement his campaign says in part governor newsom will be doing the job that californians elected him to do, leading our economic recovery and tackling our state's most pressing challenges. >> if he's not there he doesn't have to worry about returning any attacks. that's why he said he wants to put himself above the fray. >> reporter: larry gerston says while newsom is choosing not to engage the candidates he needs to engage democrats to remain at the capitol. republicans are enthusiastic about voting him out. >> democrats outnumber republicans two to one in this state, but republicans have the edge on the enthusiasm gap and

that makes this very unpredictable. >> reporter: a recent berkeley institute of governmental poll of likely voters show 50% want newsom to stay at the capitol and 47% want him out. a tight race. people can begin voting on when ballots are mailed in a matter of weeks. >> you don't have to vote yes to pick a candidate. you can vote no and pick one because the idea is, in the event that governor gavin newsom is recalled, who is there to replace him. that's why it's important for people to vote both in terms of the recall and the replacement candidate. >> reporter: republicans are expected to turn out in droves on september 14th. if democrats don't, that replacement vote will shape the future of california. jean elle, nbc bay area news. 4:53 right now. coming up next on "today in the bay," mystery solved at the olympics. >> the mascots, the kangaroo,

this morning, an olympic sized mystery is solved. australia's olympic team chief says its life-sized kangaroo mascots are back home. >> oh, yeah. look, they went missing from the australian pavilion in the olympic village nearly a week ago. at a news conference the chief hinted that the mascots were taken away by the germans. >> i think they went missing on the night that the typhoon was due in, so the 28th. around about then. they turned up last night. i understand they enjoyed a pleasant holiday in deutsch land. >> the chief went on to say members of the team damaged their rooms in the olympic village but will not face
