that is incredible to have a 12-year-old olympic medalist. what were you doing at 12? i was playing hide and seek and baseball and that's it. skateboarding making its debut at themuch fun to watch. a big success big reason why, the kids dig it, 12-year-old kakona haraki of japan. she wins silver. this is park skateboarding. sky brown wins the bronze, from the uk. the podium, sky brown who is 13, you have 12-year-old haraki, really cool to see the youth movement here in tokyo in skateboarding. here back in tokyo everyone is still buzzing about simone biles, the bronze medal, never felt so good. simone biles and the u.s. gymnastics team now mid flight back to the united states. in fact, we will see simone biles, she's scheduled to appear along with her teammates in san

jose september 26th at the sap center. the exhibition for the post-olympics performance. now, you're looking at suni lee who spent time with her before she left today. 18 years old, coming home with three medals including the all-around individual gold. she had fun recounting her performance on the balance beam where she almost fell off there. suni lee telling me she was shocked she kept her balance and talked about the -- >> i have a lot of people messaging me and telling me i'm their inspiration and how much they look up to me. it means the world to me that i can inspire people because obviously i look up to like mone so it means the world to me when they come up to me and say that to me. >> very cool to hang with her. team usa baseball now, against the dominican republic. head's up play at the beginning of the game. a runner out at home. look at the defense by the americans they get the runner.

one-on-one interview with simone biles on what she achieved in tokyo and what comes next. it's all at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." to new covid concerns and this morning an outbreak in east contra costa county schools. it's expanding one week after the students returned to the classroom. >> we have team coverage from the few numbers to new guidelines just handed down from the state. let's start out with "today in the bay's" bob redell live in brentwood this morning. parents in other school districts are watching the response because you are because of classes set to be -- soon to start everywhere else. everybody is paying attention to what's going on. >> correct. you've got schools here in east contra costa county that have opened up in brentwood and oakley and they are seeing students who have contracted covid. other districts will be watching this. it should be noted these are the first schools to start and first in learning so far this year. other school districts will be starting up soon within the liberty union high school district here in brentwood where we're standing in front of right now, there are currently 30

students infected with covid-19 according to the east bay times but only 15 of those student have stepped foot on campus. according to the brentwood union school district, nine students in seven different elementary and middle schools have become infected along with a member of the staff. they have no plans to halt inner. learning. last night the oakley union elementary school district announced three students in three schools have caught covid. live in brentwood, bob redell, "today in the bay." we want to bring in kris sanchez because she's been busy sifting through the latest school guidance from the state. >> we've been asking as parents and as journalists we want to impart that information to you and at this point the cdc and -- rather the cdph, california, department of public health, issued their faqs. there's something called

modified quarantine, and that's going to happening through the schools. we want to walk you through what that is. the state says that if students are properly masked in school, the transmission of covid-19 is unlikely and so students can safely continue in person learning with masks but they will be in school, in person, but they cannot do extra curriculars like sports or activities in a group something like student council meetings. the modified quarantine allows for fewer missed days of school and so many of our kids can't afford to miss instruction. >> how can a student get this modified quarantine? >> you're not going to be sent home automatically. students who were exposed to covid-19 but are asymptomatic, not sick, they qualify for that modified quarantine which also applies to teachers or other school staff like bus drivers or the folks who work in the cafeteria. anyone fully vaccinated is exempt from quarantine, modified or otherwise. >> how often are we talking about for the students to get

tested when on the modified quarantine? >> in order to end that modified quarantine and resume that in classroom instruction and going back to their extracurriculars the infected student or staff has to test negative five days so the sample can be taken five days after the exposure but the negative has to come at least seven days after the exposure and then return. that's still more than a week of school. as of last week, though, kids accounted for 19% of all cases in the u.s. they are largely asymptomatic and often not super sick, but we know that they also can transmit it. >> that's right. all right. thank you very much. all right. well right now, at 5:07, berkeley's mayor may be considering requiring vaccines for all city employees. on twitter, jesse actually says that he supports the plan recently put in place for state workers. now anyone who refuses would be subjected to regular covid testing. berkeley city manager tells that

a vaccine mandate would be too hard to enact. in sonoma county "the press democrat" reports that the petaluma health center is requiring all employees be vaccinated with some exceptions. santa rosa community health is considering something similar. the discussion over the vaccine mandates comes as san francisco health leaders consider a proof of vaccination roll and the requirement would apply to anyone who wants to enter into restaurants, gyms or entertainment venues, similar to what's going to happen next month in new york city. well, as we've reported, it's already mandatory at hundreds of san francisco bars. this is where the city's public health director talked about this. >> we're exploring that again right now. we've seen that a number of bars and restaurants and other entities are doing that, and we're very supportive of that. >> now leaders in other areas also calling this a good way to protect workers and customers and argue it may encourage more people to get vaccinated.

a sad development in the long search for a missing runner in the east bay. a body has been found. authorities believe it's him. an autopsy is scheduled to identify if it is philip kreycik. a volunteer found the body in a remote part of pleasanton ridge regional park. it was found more than a quarter mile off the public trail under a tree. kreycik told his wife he was going for a run in the park on july 10th. that day temperatures were above 100 degrees. investigators say it is possible he mistook a beaten path as a trail he was supposed to run on. >> we're pretty heartbroken over this. we've invested a lot of time and energy and care as a community, as one team. >> hundreds of volunteers and law enforcement spent weeks searching with helicopters, drones, thermal cameras, dogs, people and other tools. turning now to california's ongoing drought. this afternoon, state leaders are expected to talk about the dire situation in a virtual

briefing. experts plan to present the biggest challenges including the extreme heat and the wildfire risk. this comes as state water board moves forward with sweeping cuts to thousands of farms from fresno to the oregon boarder. they must stop drawing water from rivers and creeks in the sacramento san joaquin river watershed. >> want to get a check of the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. water rights and concerns so prevalent in the central valley. >> it's been hard because when you think about it that's a huge part of our agriculture and our economy. i mean to see them having to stop that, we'll have to see the impacts. let's start out this morning, we are watching several things and we from nearby wildfires and i'm and windy conditions. here at home our temperatures are cooling off. nice day for a hike but just

once again watch the air quality. temperatures in the south bay headed toward the mid 70s and we'll see upper 80s for the inland east bay and low 80s for napa while san francisco will be in the mid 60s. mike you're seeing debris scattered on 101. sunny as our temperatures head towards the 80s today. nice day and cooler than yesterday but we'll see a lot more changes ahead. more on that in the forecast coming up. we're seeing some change in the east bay shot here for oakland. the volume starting to build for the nimitz freeway. no problem for the speeds there. they're just fine right here by the coliseum. we'll check farther east coming up. good morning. happy wednesday to you. genentech the latest bay area company to tell employees they have to be vaccinated to work there. they're based in south san francisco, makes drugs. we were talking yesterday about how important the boeing starliner capsule was going to be. they've had problems with it, but more problems tuesday and it did not leave the launch pad. boeing wants to compete with spacex to take astronauts to the space station. nasa will pay them to do it. spacex has been very successful and boeing not. shares in menlo park based

robinhood gained 24% out of nowhere. that alone would be remarkable but the jump put the share price above its ipo price for the first time. robinhood went public with a thud last thursday. bloomberg reporting the british government may block nvidia's purchase of arm. based in santa clara and arm based in england both make chips. the report says the british may have national security concerns about the nvidia purchase. good news out of lyft, the san francisco company made a profit. i'll explain the air quotes in a second. the first quarterly profit the company has ever made and its comes as we try to get ourselves out of a pandemic. now a week or so ago i would have said as we exit the pandemic but things have changed. still very difficult for lyft to get drivers on the road but the money is coming in. as far as my air quotes, its profits are like an asterisk and footnote. a thing called ebi da, very

earthquake yesterday. wonder if raj felt that. here is a look at the high temperatures. 94 yes, it's going to be an actual temperature of 94 but feel more like 104. the next few days off and on showers and thunderstorms. we'll be watching that. let's talk about our air quality. all the fires we've had here recently that have been causing our air quality for most of the past few days looks good, but now we're starting to see some of the smoke coming in. where you see the green that includes the santa cruz mountains down to san jose, over towards the tri-valley into the north bay, you can see the pattern of that smoke drifting through the altamont pass into the central valley. we're going to at times see the smoke get a little bit worse. this is something different that we've seen recently. that's because we have new fires burning. they're getting more intense and we've seen the change in our wind direction so that could bring some more smoke our way. this as new red flag warnings will be going up for parts of the sierra and shasta mountains

as well as over towards nevada. all of this wide area under very low humidity and high winds over the next few days. we'll be watching that. let's talk about our temperatures today. coming down, feeling better. upper 70s for san jose. for the east bay we're up to 85 in walnut creek, better than the 90s we had yesterday. and some mid 70s for the peninsula, san francisco reaching into the low 60s and the north bay still hot in ukiah, clearlake in the upper 90s but some low to mid 80s for the rest of the north bay. and looking at our temperatures it continues to cool off tomorrow but then spikes as we go towards friday. much hotter and then the rest of the weekend it's going to be still a pretty warm cooling down early next week. and mike, you're saying that peninsula has cleared. >> we were talking about plastic debris and the traffic break through palo alto, but that all cleared just as we took the last live shot. we saw traffic flowing and there have been no problems since. over here the tri-valley, the dublin interchange. the castro valley moving nicely

welcome back. 5:25. nbc bay area responds to a peninsula man who told us he was out $10,000. this is because an overseas airline failed to deliver on his refund. >> he asked consumer investigator chris chmura's team to get involved. >> good morning. pandemic charles in redwood city bought business class tickets from love tan za and he paid $10,434 to fly from

sfo to italy. then the pandemic hit and he said lufthansa cut its schedule including his flights and he canceled his trip and responded to an e-mail offering a refund. he only got back what he paid in taxes, $276. after eight months of back and forth over the remaining $10,000 he called us. we reached out to lufthansa. a month late later they credited the $10,158 to his credit card. lufthansa hinted he jumped the gun essentially and canceled his reservation before lufthansa was able to remove him from his system but they refunded as a gesture of goodwill. many people whose flights were canceled because of covid-19 did not get the option of a he roo fund, they got vouchers many of which are about to expire. we found a strategy to extend the life of those vouchers.

>> a major san francisco street shut down this morning. how it could affect your commute for the rest of the week. this is "today in the bay." >> welcome to wednesday morning. 5:30 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. well, first this morning, movement on the medical front. >> pfizer saying it's just about ready to seek full fda approval for its vaccine and a san francisco hospital now offering up supplemental vaccine doses, possibly the first health care system in the country to do so. >> "today in the bay" cierra johnson live with developments on both of these stories. >> good morning, marcus and laura. that's right. there's two huge stories coming out of the world of pharmaceuticals, vaccines. let's first start with the news of pfizer. they could potentially receive full authorization by the beginning of next month. now this is according to some new reports. the fda has an unofficial target date of the beginning of september to give that full approval. now the move could push more to

get vaccinated and it could have more businesses and entities issuing mandates when the full approval is granted. that second big story in the world of vaccines, san francisco general is getting nat ty are o supplement issal pfizer or moderna shot to anyone who received a johnson & johnson shot and wants peace of mind. the deputy director tells the san francisco department of health her department has received requests based on patients talking to their physicians and that's why they're allowing the accommodations. the hospital is not calling this additional shot a booster, rather a supplemental shot. so as it stands now, san francisco's director of public health says there has been no policy changes and the city and county will continue to follow the cdc's recommendation that prohibits booster shots. again, sf general are calling that additional shot

supplemental. they're not calling it a booster shot. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> really interesting development there. >> you know what, many people are considering and wondering when can they actually receive that booster shot for better protection. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us us with a look at where we stand. >> our local health departments like contra costa county starting to push out that information about those booster shots. they're getting a lot of questions from people asking the same thing. at this point the cdc is not recommending booster shots for people for a number of reasons. the cdc says that at this point there's not enough data to advise that booster shot, that third shot, though research is under way. there's no way to track those third doses for your doctor, for your pharmacy, for the local site, wherever your get your vaccine. then consider there's not enough supply globally for other countries that have not yet vaccinated their populations. >> we have heard that people in other countries, they will get a booster shot. >> yeah. so people are saying why not me, right.

the cdc not recommending here in the u.s. right now, but we know that in september, germany, france, the uk and now we're learning that israel, too, will begin offering third shots primarily to elderly and immunocompromised people, but also to people who got that singles dose j&j vaccines and the astrazeneca vaccine. those are still effective though to a lesser degree than the pfizer and moderna. >> it's interesting with san francisco general announcing. >> i was interested to hear what cierra had to say. as she said some people are getting that offer of that third supplemental shot or that extra supplemental shot if they got the johnson & johnson vaccine. we don't get the astrazeneca here. you'll have to talk to your doctor and go to nbcbayarea.com to see that story from the california department or the san francisco department of health. it is so confusing. >> it's a lot. >> you have to just keep asking the questions and then don't get frustrated if the answer changes because the science and data is

changing too. >> all the time. keeping tabs on it all. happening today parents in alameda county get answers on how covid will affect the school year. state and alameda county health leaders will host a virtual school health panel. vaccinations and covid cases tick up. the meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. while most businesses are supplying with the new mask mandate one east bay entertainment spot says that the choice is yours. the danville bowling alley will not enforce the mandate. in its post it says people have the freedom to choose to follow government restrictions and masks will be optional for customers. pleasant hill police investigating a deadly shooting that happened as they were responding to reports of a man trying to enter homes in the shadow mountain court area about 6:00 last night. this is close to the contra costa county -- contra costa country club.

officers heard gunfire as they arrived. the man was found shot on the living room floor inside of a home and later died. police say everyone involved is cooperating with the investigation. so far no board on any arrests. organizers planning a rally in san francisco for a man whose death touched a nerve. 84-year-old vicha was originally from thailand known as grandpa vicha. as he took his regular walk around his home in the alta vista neighborhood in january someone shoved him to the ground. he died two days later. a 19-year-old has pleaded not guilty. members of the aapi community believe it was a hate crime. they plan to gather outside the hall of justice. new evacuations from the dixie wildfire which is creating new problems for firefighters due to the heat and those strong winds. so the latest evacuations are in the area near lake almanor about

75 miles east of redding, the fire still 35% tainds but the amount of acres burned up to 254,000. new analysis of the data by migrating to most are areas higher. now that map showing where people are moving to most since the start of the pandemic. darker shaded outlined areas are seeing more arrivals compared to traditional urban areas. some of those areas overlap with the gray shaded terrain indicating more wild land vegetation. many of the areas homeowners are saying their insurance spike is due to increased fire risk. >> very concerning with the pandemic, too, a lot of people moved out of cities. >> the houses are cheaper but the insurance is higher and then that risk where you may have to equackvate. there will be new red flag warnings going up for northern california, the sierra and a lot

of those mountainous areas where humidity levels will be dropping and we will also have some high wind gusts picking up. in the bay area a slight cool down for today with coastal temperatures in the mid 60s, in the mid 80s for the inland east bay with concord heading up to 87. we're coming out of those 90s so looking good today. we'll talk about what's ahead. mike, you're seeing change right now. >> on our camera in san jose, more glowing lights. see them slowing and clustering by our camera which is north of 680 which is just where we see that slowing traditional up to oakland road. right on schedule before 540. there is a disabled vehicle. it's affecting 87 as it merges with 101. not affecting 101 from what i can tell, not really affecting 87 unless you use the connecter. the rest of the bay shows a smooth, easy drive. no problem, a little slowing along along the incline which is traditional getting into san francisco. i'll hand it back to you because you have a major surface street, two major streets that will be affected there. >> thanks so much.

>> now i'm hungry. let's get you started a live look outside in walnut creek. isn't this nice. it's all clear and you can see all the colors in the sky and we are about 23 minutes away from sunrise. more colors in the sky and this is not good. we're getting a look at our computer model that shows near surface smoke with some of the fires burning nearby. we could start to see a lot more smoke coming in, especially for these areas shaded in green. that's parts of the north bay especially the tri-valley and over the santa cruz mountains. may look more hazy today and it could get worse tomorrow. it does show a lot more intense smoke for the inland areas by tomorrow afternoon with some clearing near the coastline. if you're sensitive to the smoke you will need to limit your time outside and a lot of us probably wearing masks so we can filter

out some of the smoke hopefully. looking at our temperatures today, headed towards the upper 70s and low 80s. it's going to be a little bit cooler compared to the past few days and we're coming out of the 90s in the upper 90s yesterday in antioch so how about 89 degrees. i think you'll need the air conditioning, but it's going to feel better while oakland keeps the natural air conditioning, upper 60s, low 70s for san mateo and san francisco not seeing too many changes here. windy and cool. for the north bay we see temperatures in the 70s and 80s. napa, we have 80s today but it will get hotter tomorrow and that's just one day with some hotter temperatures and then going into the weekend it's going to continue to cool off. as we go through the forecast, expect those highs in the upper 80s and then low 90s for the weekend. and if you do have outdoor plans just plan on it being hot, but if you're near the coast or in san francisco, still looking pretty good and comfortable

there. mike, you were checking on the timing of the bay bridge. >> right. exactly. now the timing of the bay bridge has been that the metering lights were turned on before 6:00 so within the next five minutes over the last couple days, but we haven't seen as heavy traffic volume. we're looking at a similar case with volume, lighter traffic, slowing shows up on our sensors on the incline. there's a little bit of slowing towards san francisco as those exits start to see more crowding, typically the trigger to turn the metering lights on and likely what happened the last couple days. despite the fact that east shore freeway, the maze move smoothly. contra costa county has no slowing, antioch through concord for highway 4 or coming across the carquinez and benicia bridges. the south bay does show the slowing, north 101, still the cluster of lights 680 to elm rock mike. happening now, san francis lead more street closures permanent after the success of the slow streets program. those are lake street in the

on duty the day chauvin murdered floyd. all are charged with violating floyd's civil rights while acting under government authority. the former officers are schedule to be arraigned in september and the trial date has not been set. chauvin was sentenced in june to 22.5 years in prison. developing new, new revelations about the man who stabbed and killed a pentagon police officer near a metro station. the pentagon was placed on lockdown yesterday as it unfolded. responding officers shot and killed the attackers. authorities are now saying that he was arrested in georgia in april and charged for battery against police and then released after a judge ordered a mental health hearing. new details on a sailor accused of starting the fires that destroyed the "uss bonhomme richard" docked in san diego. a newell unsealed warrant indicated that suspect had dropped out of the s.e.a.l. program and reassigned to the ship. the fire burned five days.

the ship couldn't be salvaged. the warrant indicates other sailors saw the suspect in that area prior to the fire starting and fire equipment was sabotaged. his attorney denies the allegations. new this morning, more wildfire protection maybe on the way for california farmers. governor newsom signed a bill into law expanding a state-created insurance pool to cover damaged farm buildings. the new rules still exclude coverage for vehicles, equipment, crops and livestock. a strange new twist to a story we told you about last week. a bear cub rescued in the tamarack wildfire is on the loose after being rescued by wildfire teams in alpine county. his paws were burned. he has been recovering at the facility in south lake tahoe but yesterday managed to escape his enclosure by tunnelling under a fence. they're telling people to be on alert but say the cub is not a

threat. air travelers are facing another day of cancellations creating travel chaos for a fourth straight day. according to flight wire, spirit airlines has canceled nearly 300 flights today. the airline blames the cancellations on weather and operational issues. passengers say they're being bumped from flights and the airline is changing reservations without asking. one woman has spent two days just trying to get her 15-year-old son stranded in florida back home to florida. >> he's traveling alone. i didn't want him left at the airport. >> it's not just spirit. delta airlines struggling to meet post covid demand juggling planes and crews and it does not have enough customer service reps right now. now at 6:00, stoked for gold. young olympians winning big in skateboarding's debut.
