year and a breakout moment for some of these young ladies. >> thank you. i have mosquitos, forgive me as i swat away on live tv. good evening from tokyo. laura and marcus, a 12-year-old medal, wins a medal here in tokyo. i have a 12-year-old, know what he's doing, sleeping after a long night of video games. that's the difference here. but i love the kid. let's show you what happened in skateboarding. here in tokyo, everyone's loving the sport around the world to watch it and here's why. the kids are doing so well. here she is, 12-year-old kakona haraki of japan. look at her form. she becomes the youngest individual medalist since 1939. not just the 12-year-old, we have a 13-year-old on the podium as well. sky brown wins the bronze medal. she's from the uk. simone biles, the team usa gymnastics star has left tokyo on her way back home now to the united states.

everyone is still talking about that bronze medal. simone biles saying herself the bronze was better than any of other gold. we are schedule to see simone biles, she's scheduled to perform in a gymnastics exhibition event in san jose along with the other members of team usa september 26th at the sap center. we also spent time with suni lee, the 18-year-old from minnesota, but she's making such an impact across the country, she's coming home with three medals, including the al around individual gold. she told me she was actually shocked that she kept her balance. look at this. just keeps it on there. she also talked about the impact, though, and inspiration that she's made in the asian-american community. >> i have a lot of people messaging me and telling me i'm their inspiration and how much they look up to me. it means the world to me that i can inspire people because obviously i look up to like

simone and a lot of other people so it means the world to me when they come up to me and say that to me. >> very nice to chat with her. team usa baseball, watch the head's up defensive play. they get the runner at home. sharp thinking here by the americans and then a little offense, todd frazier, with the home run. usa beats the dominican republic, 3-1, they advance to the semifinals and play japan or south korea and on this team usa team, is joe ryan from ma -- marin county. a lot of people are extra special rooting for team usa baseball. when we come back a taste test of some of the flavors of kit kat in tokyo. green tea, chocolate, of course, and banana and soy sauce. see you in a few minutes. >> i'm intrigued. >> thank you very much. all right. time to get a look at the medal count this morning. team usa is in the lead with the

most overall medals at 77, china in second with 70, but when it comes to those gold medals and the roc with the top three with 53 medals. coming up this morning on "today," you can catch hoda's exclusive interview with simone biles on what she achieved in tokyo and what comes next, that's coming up at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." now to new covid concerns and this morning an outbreak in east contra costa county schools is expanding one week after students returned to the classroom. we have team coverage from the new numbers to new guidelines just handed down from the state. let's start out with bob redell live in brentwood this morning. parents are certainly watching the response here because classes are starting so soon in other districts. >> correct. schools here in brentwood and oakley are the first to start in person learning this fall and already in these areas, several student have contracted covid just in the liberty union high school district, which its main

office is behind me in brentwood. 30 students infected with covid-19. that's according to the east bay times. only 15 have stepped foot on campus. according to the brentwood union high school district, nine students in seven elementary and middle schools along with a member of the staff have contracted covid. last night the oakley union elementary school district announced three students in three schools who caught covid. this week we spoke with the brentwood union superintendent dana eaton who said that it does not appear their students with covid became infected on campus. he has no plans to halt in-person learning and says that protocols are being followed. the district's students, 9,000, must check in daily at their classroom. >> if somebody comes in and all of a sudden they have a runny nose they'll come up to the office and the office will call the parents after isolating them and have them picked up. we want to be open. this is where kids belong.

>> reporter: the superintendent is encouraging everyone to become vaccinated to keeps the rate of infection down. reporting live in brentwood, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. so right now we want to bring in kris sanchez. she's really been busy sifting through all of the latest school guidance from the state. >> so much to go through. >> yeah. i talked to that superintendent the week before his school went back to school and they were still waiting for the guidelines from the state that just came down earlier this week, so a lot of these districts are getting frustrated parents calling them and the fact is they don't have the guidance from the state or the cdc. it's constantly evolving. there is something now that is called modified quarantine and that's intended to help kids stay in school even if they are exposed to a positive covid case. let's walk through what that means. modified quarantine, is for unvaccinated students younger students who are exposed and allows in-person instruction to continue in the same classroom if they don't have symptoms. they're not sick. they have to continue masking.

they have to undergo at least twice weekly testing dur the ten-day modified quarantine, but students also will have to abstain from sports and other activity. if they develop symptoms like the superintendent said, they will be isolated and be asked to go home. >> how do kids get modified quarantine. >> for students who are exposed to a possible positive case. they are asymptomatic, though. it also applies to teachers and other school staff like bus drivers and cafeteria workers. anyone fully vaccinated is fully exempt from quarantine modified or otherwise. go ahead. >> i was going to say, if they know they were exposed though. >> they know they were exposed because the thought is that with proper masking, that transmission is very unlikely. not just in the school setting but out in the public. >> i know you were saying they have to get tested twice a week on the modified quarantine, but

what about if they have the lingering symptoms, have they talked about that. >> if they have symptoms they're going home, they're going home and their quarantine is different. the modified is for students like if laura is -- god forbid. >> exposed to someone but i was masked i can still be here. >> right. >> because my -- i guess the removal. >> so we won't -- wearing masks we're not going to be contagious to each other. if i had a fever. >> you're out. that's not modified or asymptomatic. >> when i had covid i still had that cough so i couldn't come back to work. >> which is why i missed you. >> why do i feel like distancing from everyone. >> so much, though. >> it is so much and they are doing all of this. this is also happening in all the schools too. they are really emphasizing the prevention part of it rather than the quarantining part of it. it is going to happen but hopefully the kids will be asymptomatic and be able to continue their instruction and not -- >> we're the changes and

adaptations we have to take. >> be flexible. >> we've all learned to be flexible. >> thanks, kris. >> berkeley's mayor may be considering requiring vaccinations for all city employees. on twitter jesse actually says that he supports the plan recently put in place for state workers. anyone who refuses to be subjected to regular covid test. berkeley city manager tells that a vaccine mandate would be too hard to enact. in sonoma county "the press democrat" reports that the petaluma health center is requiring all employees be vaccinated with some exceptions. santa rosa community health is considering something similar. in san francisco leaders are considering a proof of vaccination rule. the requirement would apply to anyone who wants entry into restaurants, gyms, or any kind of entertainment venues, similar to what begins next month in new york city. as we've reported it's already mandatory at hundreds of san francisco bars.

leaders in other areas are calling it a good way to protect workers and customers and argue it may encourage more people to get vaccinated. more details with more businesses starting to require proof of vaccination, many people are asking questions about their vaccination cards. here's a few things to keep in mind. officials do not recommend laminating them because they might need to be updated if boosters are required. if you lose it the location where you got the shot should have an electronic record of your vaccination to give you a new card. sad development in the long search for a missing runner in the east bay. a body has been found that authorities believe is him. an autopsy is scheduled to identify if it is philip kreycik, a volunteer found the body yesterday in a remote part of pleasanton ridge regional park, the same area where the search teams were looking. it was found more than a quarter mile off the public trail under

a tree. kreycik told his wife he was going for a run in the park on july 10th. that day, those temperatures were above 100 degrees. investigators say that it is possible he mistook a path as a trail he was actually supposed to run. governor newsom heading to the site of the largest wildfire in state history. the governor will go to glen county, one of the places hit hard by last year's august complex fire. he plans to talk about state and federal collaboration on managing fuels in that area. turning now to california's ongoing drought, this afternoon, state leaders are expected to talk about the dire situation in a virtual briefing. this comes as the state water board moves forward with sweeping cuts to thousands of farms from fresno to the oregon border. property owners with less sep orty must top withdrawing water from the watershed. let's take a peek outside

towards the bay bridge on this wednesday morning halfway through your workweek. mike has a look at the morning commute and see how folks are heading out the door if they are already. kari has a look at our forecast. >> the low water levels, i wanted to show you our state reservoirs and how they're doing. only at half of the capacity and so for some of those largest reservoirs we are seeing them really declining, so that's the reason they're starting out with water cuts for farmers. temperature here across the bay area, we have mid 60s along the coast and some upper 80s for the inland east bay. you're starting to see an issue through san jose. >> slowing north 101 and i mentioned it was slow up to alone rock and then appeared at alan rock. on the northbound side even though chp's report says southbound. look at the jam here only for the short section from story up to alum rock. i believe there's a crash blocking one lane. the rest of the bay shows a

was going to be. they've had problems with it but more problems on tuesday and it didn't leave the launch pad. boeing wants to compete with spacex to take astronauts to the space station. nasa will pay them to do it. spacex has been very successful and boeing not. shares in menlo park based robinhood gained 24% out of nowhere. that alone would be remarkable but the jump put the share price above its ipo price for the first time. robinhood went public with a thud last thursday. bloomberg reporting the british government may block nvidia's purchase of arm. nvidia based in santa clara and arm based in england both make chips. the report says the british may have national security concerns about the nvidia purchase. good news out of lyft, the san francisco company made a profit. i'll explain the air quotes in a second. it's the first quarterly profit the company has ever made and of

course it comes as we try to get ourselves out of a pandemic. just about a week ago, marcus and laura, i would have said as we were exiting the pandemic but things have change. it's difficult for lyft to get drivers on the road but the money is coming in. as we were talking earlier the profit thing, it's ebida, earnings before taxes, depreciation and amortization. all the things you can take out to make a profit. a lot of companies make profit with no air quotes. but it's a step. >> there you go. thank you. >> turning to the sky high prices at the airport, mainly at the bars and restaurants. this morning up with traveler at new york lagarde da's airport was shocked to find sam adams bear selling for $28, he tweeted a photo calling it insane. they're investigating the restaurant's pricing. the restaurant says the price of

antioch and 73 in hayward. nears the coast we're looking at some low 70s for redwood city, san francisco, in the mid 60s, and our north bay temperatures reaching 85 in napa and yeah, still hot, clearlake reaching 99 degrees. as we go through our seven-day forecast, our temperatures falling for a lot of our valleys so it's going to feel more comfortable compared to what we'll have on friday. temperatures spiking in the low 90s. some spots in the upper 90s. and that continues into next week while san francisco keeping it steady, more clouds and fog and some peeks of sunshine with highs in the upper 60s. mike, what's happening now in san jose. >> chp confirmed what we expected from the live camera we were showing north 101 jam from the 280 over crossing to alum rock. just a short tiny bit of slowing. it's there nonetheless you saw it on the camera. a crash in the sunol area but no slowing shows up. the bay bridge toll plaza now that does have slowing, but it's

good morning. before the pandemic charles in redwood city bought business class tickets from lufthansa. and he paid $10,434 to fly from sfo to italy. then the pandemic hit and he said lufthansa cut its schedule including his flights and he canceled his trip and responded to an e-mail offering a refund. he only got back what he paid in taxes, $276. after eight months of back and forth over the remaining $10,000 he called us. we reached out to lufthansa. a month later lufthansa credited the $10,158 to his credit card. in a statement, lufthansa hinted he jumped the gun essentially and canceled his reservation before lufthansa was

not received full authorization was a reason many folks decided not to get vaccinated but with the fda saying they're getting closer, this could sway more folks to get vaccinated according to some new reports, the fda says they have an unofficial target date of early september to give that full approval. the move could push more skeptics to get vaccinated and that full approval could have more businesses and entities issuing vaccine mandates when the full approval is granted. that second big story in the world of vaccines, san francisco general is getting national attention this morning after announcing they are offering a supplemental pfizer or moderna shot to anyone who received a johnson & johnson shot wants peace of mind. the deputy director of health at the san francisco department of public health, she says her department has received requests based on patients talking to their physicians and that's why they're allowing the accommodations. again the hospital is not calling this additional shot a

booster shot, rather a supplemental shot. so as it stand right now, san francisco's director of public health says there has been no policy changes. they continue, the city and county continue to follow the cdc's guidelines that prohibits booster shots. again, sf general calling the second shot of pfizer or moderna supplemental, not a booster shot. so a lot evolving in the world of vaccines. live in san francisco, cierra johnson, for "today in the bay." >> a lot of verbiage to keep clear too. >> many people now wondering when they can receive a booster shot for better protection. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is here with a look at where we stand on all this. >> outside of san francisco, right. a lot of public health departments like contra costa countys are starting to put out information because they're getting a lot of booster questions. at this point the cdc says there is not enough data to advise a booster, although there is research under way. there's no way to track third doses and consider there's not

enough global supply for other countries that have not vaccinated their populations yet. this could change. >> we have heard that there are people in other countries that will get booster shots. >> in fact, a new batch announced they are going to do that. the cdc not recommending them here in the u.s. but in september, folks in germany, france, and the uk will begin getting third shots. russia and israel have been doing this already. this is primarily for elderly and immunocompromised people and people who got the single dose johnson & johnson vaccines and the astrazeneca vaccine. the exception seems to be san francisco which you heard cierra mention the folks that got johnson & johnson vaccines in san francisco being allowed with their doctor's permission to get that secondary dose, not a booster shot, but a supplemental of moderna or pfizer to boost their immunity. >> wouldn't it be nice if it

could be over, all of this. >> yes. >> most businesses are complying with the mask mandate. one entertainment spot says the choice is yours. the danville bowling alley will not enforce the mandate. it says people have the freedom to choose to follow government restrictions and masks will be optional for customers. just in, unvaccinated americans believe vaccines are more dangerous. that's according to a kaiser family foundation poll. the survey says 37% of unvaccinated adults continue to mask up in public and 40% steer clear of crowds given the spread. those who are vaccinated tend to take more precautions. 62% continue to wear masks. new this morning, pleasant hill police are investigating the deadly shooting that happened as they responded to reports of a man trying to break into homes in the shadow mountain area, the shadow

mountain court area around 6:00 last night. officers heard gun feature as they arrived and the man was found shot on the living room floor inside one of the homes. he later died. in concord, police are looking for a gunman who shot three people including one who died. this happened around 10:00 p.m. on pine street. the conditions of the other two victims is not yet known. so far no arrests announced in either case. and happening today, organizers are planning a rally in san francisco where a man whose death touched a nerve when it happened last winter. we're talking about 84-year-old vicha. he was originally from thailand and known as grandpa vicha. he took his regular walk around his neighborhood. he died two days later. a 19-year-old suspect has pleaded not guilty. members of the aapi community believe it was a hate crime. they plan to gather today

outside of the hall of justice. developing now plumas, new evacuations from the dixie wildfire which is creating new problems for firefighters due to the high heat and strong winds. the latest evacuations are in an area near lake almanor east of redding. the fire is about 35% contained. new analysis of data by the chronicle finds some of the areas where people are migrating to most are also areas where wildfire risks are higher. this map shows where people are moving since the start of the pandemic. darker shaded areas are seeing more arrivals compared to traditional urban areas. some of the areas overlack with the gray shaded terrain indicating more wild land vegetation. many of the areas homeowners are also seeing their insurance prices spike. red flag warnings, something in effect in some parts. kari keeps tabs. >> that's concerning people are

moving out for lower housing prices but a higher risk of fires and we're seeing that today with the red flag warnings for parts of the sierra towards the north as well as nevada as the winds pick up and low humidity moves in. here we're looking at higher humidity, cooler temperatures, coastal areas in the 60s, upper 80s for the inland east bay. we'll get a look at more changes ahead in our forecast coming up. mike you're seeing unexpected patterns for a couple spots. >> we'll start with san jose where we had the crash causing slowing for north 101 that cleared all lanes just after my last report. everything was recovering nicely and then it started to slow down a bit again. remember, it's now 6:38 and that's when we tend to see that burst of traffic hit and stick for whatever happens for this morning commute. we've had a light are volume overall seen the pattern this week slow down here and then really kick in for that portion of san jose, for silicon valley's commute, about 7:30 there. keep that in mind. towards the bay bridge, the

palo alto, here's 101, a crash reported southbound with headlights around university where the camera is. recovery for 101 through san jose we'll watch the unexpected slowing you might find. at 6:42 we're getting an up close and tragic look at the moments following the condo collapse in surfside, florida. this video may be disturbing to some viewers. body camera video showing the massive emergency response june 24th. first responders were seen scrambling. the bodies of 98 people were recovered during the month-long recovery effort. new york governor andrew cuomo under new fire by new york's states attorney general indicating the governor sexually harassed at least 11 women. the report goes into graphic detail about how investigators say he engaged in unwanted groping, kissing and hugging and making inappropriate comments. the governor is once again strongly denying all allegations and it's possible he will face

just two states. look, we need leadership from everyone. >> president biden ordered the cdc to create a new rule barring evictions in areas with high infections. he did this after congress failed to extend the eviction moratorium. this is probably way beyond his powers. presidents test the outer edges of their powers all the time. president bush went to war in iraq using congressional authorization designed for afghanistan. president obama's daca program was questionable as far as whether a president could create his own immigration rules. president biden admitted out loud his order may not hold up in court and that he shopped around to find someone who says he can do it saying, quote, the bulk of the constitutional scholarship says it's not likely to pass constitutional muster, but there are several key scholars who say it may and it's worth the effort. that is an incredibly odd quote.

up soon and kids going back to school so football practices and all that stuff will be happening as we start out with a live look outside in san jose. it's cloudy right now and we are not able to see that sunrise, but it's also going to keep our temperatures from warming up so quickly. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen as we take a look at where we are headed. we have upper 50s and see the sky clearing around k and the rest of the day is sunny as we make it to the mid to upper 70s. one thing i'm concerned about our air quality. we're possibly going to see more smoke coming in. a near surface computer model that links in the fires as well as the wind direction and the wind speed. it does show where we see the green that there could be some more smoke moving into parts of the north bay as well as the tri-valley and down to the south bay as well. santa cruz mountains. it may be worse for tomorrow afternoon so we'll see the trend possibly continuing as we get more of the fires putting an extreme amount of smoke into the

atmosphere and a slight shift in the wind direction could bring that our way. as we look at our temperatures for today, actually coming down with some upper 70s for san jose, some upper 80s for the inland east bay and for oakland upper 60s. a high of 73 in redwood city and the mission district in the upper 60s, santa rosa today heading up to 81, hot farther to the north. our seven-day forecast shows more cooling for tomorrow but then warming up a few more degrees for friday. very warm weekend but not too bad and some mid to upper 80s next week. san francisco looking steady with highs in the upper 60s each day. mike, you're seeing headlines for san jose and san francisco. >> that's right. san jose's headline was the crash causing all the slowing early which lasted until about now right here. breaking up the traffic flow north 101 it's still a little slow from 280, that's lighter than we see. this week has been a lighter volume overall throughout the bay. the tri-valley starting to build, same for the east bay, hayward to union city for the

6:54. welcome back before you head out the door we are moving forward with our top stories. new covid concerns in contra costa county classrooms. >> want to go live to brentwood and "today in the bay's" bob redell. infected students now in several schools there in two cities. >> we have several students in three districts, marcus and laura. the liberty union high school district they have 30 students infected with covid-19, according to the east bay times, only 15 have stepped on campus. according to brentwood union school district, nine students in seven elementary students and member of the staff have contracted covid and the oakley union elementary school district announced three students in three schools who have become

infected. we spoke with a superintendent who says it does not appear the students with covid became infected on campus and has no plans to halt in-person learning and protocols are being met. the district's 9,000 students must do a daily symptom check at their classrooms. reporting live here in brentwood, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. full approval for pfizer's covid vaccine may come as soon as next month according to new reports. the agency has an unofficial target date of early september. some believe the move may push more skeptics to get vaccinated and could lead to more proof of vaccination rules once full approval is granted. san francisco leaders are considering a new proof of vaccination rule that requirement would apply to places like restaurants, gyms and entertainment venues. this is similar to what begins next month in new york city. san francisco bars recently approved their own rules, but it's not binding. and to the games in tokyo
