waiting for the debate to come to a conclusion. >> it may seem a little confusing as moderna is saying that the covid vaccines are 90% effective six months after they are administered, but also recommending the booster shots within the next six months. the cdc is saying that the booster not needed yet, so who should the people listen to? ucf infectious disease expect dr. peter hong helps to cut through the clutter. >> they should listen to cdc, because what they are looking at is the impact of the disease and hospitalizations and death. >> reporter: he says that while they are powerful and the invention is great, the ability to prevent serious cases is the key. >> if it were up to me, preventing someone from getting seriously ill is really the outcome that we need to care most about. >> reporter: but this group of the east bay locals are done

vaccinated if you not done so already. nbc 4. >> thank you, ginger. and now, the rise has been issue ug the first mandate to require health care workers in work settings to be vaccinated or receive the second dose by the end of september otherwise, they must get weekly covid tests and otherwise medical facilities and other facilities will have to be tested 72 hours before an indoor visit. and in the bay area, every employee has to be vaccinated or face weekly testing. this morning the city of san jose made that announcement which impacts 8,000 employees including the police and fire. the mandate takes effect august 23rd, and the mayor says that at some point he expects the order to become a full vaccination mandate meaning get a shot or get another job.

for those who are choosing not to vaccinate or take the weekly test will be put on unpaid administrative leave. >> we need to do everything that we possibly can to ensure that we can safely serve our community and the only way we can do that is to ensure that everybody is vaccinated. >> the new stats from the city show that 81% of all of the eligible city employees are fully vaccinated. we have breaking news to report of a major announcement involving a legendary athlete and broadcaster with the oakland a's. ray fosse is going to step away from the broadcasting booth while he is battling cancer. they made the announcement an hour ago. he says he has been silently battling for 16 years. he has been working as a broadcaster for the a's with nbc california, and in a statement he says given my current medical condition, i am away from the a's and nbc sports

we are looking at some breaking news out of oakland. the police are investigating a suspicious package apt jack london square. the police have closed off the area and nearby businesses are being evacuate and the buses are being rerouted and the trainses are being rerouted. we will bring the latest to you when we learn something. a family is calling for an end to gun violence. a 6-year-old girl was shot, and the gunman is on the loose. >> we are losing a young 6-year-old girl, and lord, we ask for your comforting spirit -- >> reporter: the supporters of a 16-year-old girl in the district today -- >> my daughter was a loving girl who embraced whoever she came across with a smile.

tomorrow. yes, we have been lucky with the temperatures, and at least for the couple of temperatures, and we are tracking the wildfire smoke as well, and we will bring you to the microclimate forecast and you probably noticed if you were out commuting or doing the driving out toward the distance and you can see the haze. it is coming from wildfires off to north. you see it in our san jose camera, and the sky is not nearly as blue. the air quality is good. and the most harmful particles are in the upper atmosphere, and we could see the change the way that the wind pattern is set up, and we will take you into the smoke forecast and all of the fires burning to the north. we have the river complex, and the monument fire and mcfarland fire, and the dixie fire and river fire and tremendous amount of smoke here. as we move through tonight, you can see the blue to yellow color and the haze. you can see it right there in the legend, but watch as we advance this into tomorro speci commute time.

you will see this red color right there developing in the north bay, and morin and napa valley, so you might start so smell it, and limit the outdoor exposure a little. by again, the most unhealthy smoke is expected to stay away and it could be noticeable again tomorrow morning and you could see the bay through parts of the south bay tomorrow afternoon, and you are looking at the window from morning to the afternoon with the smoke coming down, but then it could push out of here and with the way that the fog patterns are building on the coastline by tomorrow night, it should push out to east, and see a similar situation through saturday, and haze, but any harmful smoke would stay away, and we will keep on top of it, and of course, through 11:00, and tomorrow, and see the changes on this, we will be the first to let you know. as we head through tomorrow morning we will start on the cool side with the smog and

smoke, and the temperatures in the 50s and the east bay of 56, and san francisco 57, and north bay 55, and talk about a hotter day, out here on the inland valleys from 70s to low 80s today, back up to 96 in concord and 93 in morgan hillsh and 86 in san jose, and we will keep the cool 60s at the coast. on the forecast for san francisco, we are steady with the 60s over the next seven days. and going to the inland seven-day forecast, we go to 90s tomorrow and saturday and more 80s rolling in as we are heading through next week. >> ooh, saturday is going to be 90. wow. >> cool day. >> it is, but i have olivia's bread party and it is going to be sizzling. >> that is wonder. congrats. >> yes. >> and now, we have san jose's football team has a star player at least for a day. anthony flores is going to explain next.

humboldt state university. >> check it out. how can it not be good, amongst the redwoods. >> last year the covid restrictions forced the spartans to make the trek up 101, and this year, the team decided to leave san jose to avoid interfering with the tennis tournament that is held on campus. >> it gives us a great opportunity to get the best of both worlds to host a first class tournament, and get the work done and form a brotherhood. >> reporter: the spartans will be there for a week and hold a scrimmage saturday. the team did notice a team watching practice with his family and then they started to play catch with him. it was fun. they lined up evan in the back field and gave him the rock, and he finds hole, and makes the defender miss, and he is off to the race, and he is going to
