good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that commute coming up in just a bit. first, want to have a look at that forecast for you. >> yeah. starting out pretty good although we're watching our air quality temperature wise we're mostly in the 50s in pittsburgh for your morning commute, it is all clear and temperatures right around 64 degrees, dropping down to 62 by 7:00 and then warming up. it will be a hotter day. take a look at these temperatures that we'll see across the bay area. yesterday we were in the upper 80s in concord but today we're headed back to the mid to upper 90s. in the tri-valley, some upper 90s as well as low 90s for santa rosa and 86, about seven or eight degrees warmer than in san jose. mike, getting out the door it looks busy. >> the freeway almost always busy but these flashing lights on east shore highway the

frontage road alongside the of reportedly went off the roadway in the eastbound direction on to the frontage road. there's no slowing or distraction and the frontage road seems to be all right although we'll track the reports. cans see much going on in the map there. that's away from the bay bridge. you saw heavier volume and closure for 37 eastbound. governor newsom ordering anyone working in a health care setting to get vaccinated. this is to better get a handle on the delta covid variant. >> it comes as santa clara county requires all their employees be vaccinated or face consequences. serge why quintana explains. >> reporter: under the order everyone working in a health care facility must show proof of full vaccination by september 30th. within hours of the mandate two of the state's most prominent health care unions said they're supporting the move. the california nurses

association agrees that vaccination is a critically important part of a comprehensive public health program for infection control. norma is with seiu and they represent all hospital workers except doctors and nurses. >> i think it's a great thing that we have the option now to or not the option, but that mandate now, you know, that everybody needs to be vaccinated. >> reporter: the order requires health care facilities verify all visitors are vaccinated or have a recent negative covid test. kaiser permanente and sutter health systems have mandated their employees get vaccinated. she works at kaiser hospital and says the last couple weeks have been like a terrible flashback of the early days of the pandemic. >> why are we going back? i don't want to feel like this anymore, you know. being scared every day already santa clara county issuing a memo for everyone to be vaccinated by september 30th. if it's rejected and the

employee doesn't get their shots within two weeks, they could be fired. the city of san jose is also taking action. 81% of its workforce is fully vaccinated and now the remaining 19% are being ordered to get their shots. >> we need to do everything we possibly can to ensure that we can safely serve our community is to ensure everybody gets vaccinated. >> reporter: any city employee who doesn't begin getting shots by august 23rd or refuses to get weekly testing will be put on unpaid leave and could be dismissed. sergio quintana, "today in the bay." happening today kaiser and oakland technical high school are hosting a vaccination clinic for students ahead of the upcoming school year. young people will be able to receive the johnson & johnson or pfizer vaccine. that clinic starts at 3:30 this afternoon at oakland technical high school. new this morning a photo shared by san francisco police now going viral leading to an investigation. here it is.

take a look. here's a woman hanging from a car holding what appears to be an automatic assault rifle. police believe it's an ak-47. they say the photo is from some kind of illegal driving gathering on july 11th in the bayview district. police also say they've since tracked down the car and impounded it. so far they're not commenting anymore on the case. today marks five years since an unsolved deadly shooting. this is fisherman's wharf. calvin was playing pokeyman go when a gunman opened fire. he played baseball in stockton after graduating from high school in san mateo. eventually the reward surpassed $100,000 to find his killer. friends and family tonight will hold a vigil at san mateo church. ray came to the a's 50 years

ago before becoming a veteran in well loved sports analyst and now stepping away battling cancer. he has been fighting cancer for the past 16 years and been the a's commentator since 1986 working recently for nbc sports bay area. in a statement fosse said my wife carol and i extend our gratitude to the baseball community and community at large for your thoughts and prayers. as drought levels climb from our climate in crisis wonderful largest hydro electric plants is shut down due to a lack of water. there's not enough water in the oroville reservoir to power the plant. this is the first time the plant was closed. it can normally produce enough power for 80,000 homes. the shutdown has been in the works for a while. other sources will be tapped to try to make up for all that lost power. all right. it's time to get a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that friday forecast. something that a lot of people

>> thanks very much. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. what's going to be driving the day today, the jobs report. it's jobs friday. we're expecting to hears the numbers for just how many jobs were created in july. you know, despite an increase in covid cases and shortage of workers, economists are expecting that economy saw more job growth last month. the forecast, the consensus, is for 845,000 new jobs to have been added in july with unemployment dropping from 5.9% to 5.7%. but there is a wide range of system, some economists are only looking for 350,000 at the top end, 1.2 million jobs. so usually not quite that broad. it really reflects the uncertainty we're seeing across the country with this covid variant surge that's happening. stocks yesterday closing higher. the s&p 500, in fact, high.

meantime lyft is launching an annual tier for its lyft pink milpitas program. the new plan costs $199 a year. that's a $40 discount over paying month to month. the biggest perk is a 15% discount on all car rides. you also get an unlimited number of 45 minute bike share rides on classic or nonelectric bikes as well as a discounted rate on ebikes. and virgin galactic is reopening ticket sales for its space flights. the cheapest ticket will set you back $450,000. although it's also offering multiseat and a full flight buyout deal. oh, yeah. just for all of your billionaire friends who can afford to do that. the news follows richard branson's flight last month which carried the billionaire and five others to suborbital

>> which is great. hasn't it been fun to watch? >> it h at this. >> it's been pretty nice this week and also been a little bit cooler the past couple days. if you were out there yesterday afternoon, he were like okay, wait, is this still august? because those temperatures will be heating up. taking a live look outside in san jose, as we are starting out with a few clouds, all of that clears out a little bit sooner and in terms of the air quality, still looking good this morning as we look at our near ground sensors. some of our models have been showing a lot more smoke coming in late this morning. where we see all of these dark colors it indicates unhealthy air quality but it may just be just above the surface in some areas. it could expect the air quality or what you feel as you're breathing it in, if you're sensitive to that smoke, looks to improve tomorrow where we go from dark reds and purples to blue, which indicates an

improvement in air quality due to a stronger westerly wind. there is just so much smoke in the atmosphere with all of these fires burning nearby. temperature wise, still in the upper 60s near the coast. upper 70s in oakland. heading towards martinez expect a high of 91 degrees. 97 in livermore. and it could be as hot as 100 degrees in brentwood today. we're also going to see 90s in much of the north bay. let me show you livermore because our temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90s but then we start a downward trend with our temperatures feeling nicer by sunday and warming up a little bit more by the middle to end of next week. still not too bad. we are not seeing any major spikes in temperatures, just up and down a few degrees here and there. we'll also see a lot more sunshine. improved air quality tomorrow but for san francisco, may smell a little bit of that smoke mixed in with the low clouds and fog. we'll continue to monitor that. mike, you are watching a crash in oakland. >> that just popped up on the

chp report. now look at the map. you see green sensors abound here. it's a light drive. even out of the altamont pass, a crash in oakland is southbound 880 around the coliseum. reports that actually a couple vehicles that were involved one pulled over to help, a truck, another truck which may be an issue just near slowing. tracking that but no slowing on the sensors. important closure in san francisco, mission at vanness continues through monday. including the weekend. watch that area. east bay 37 closed as well as you're getting over out of novato into vallejo. we have activity off of the freeway, east shore highway, east bay 80 is clear. there's the westbound commute. happening today, governor newsom will make a stop in southern california. this is to highlight the safe reopening of schools. he'll visit an elementary school in san bernardino county. the governor expected to lay out the effort to fund money for resources and support schools need to safely reopen. his visit is supposed to start

around 11:00 a.m. for families trying to make it in the bay, proof the financial costs tied to raising children, a study by united way of california finds marin county is the most expensive in the region when it comes to child care. a family of four averages spending near $24,000 a year. it's almost $1,000 more than the next county on the list, san mateo, the yearly cost for the bay area, nearly $20,000 per year. >> to our 2020 olympic coverage and a bay area runner, luis grijalva is a dreamer in more ways than one. as a daca recipient he had to jump through hoops to travel through japan but he made is. here's "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd. 123450 knowing luis i know he's nervous. >> reporter: abdihamid nur should know. he's his college roommate at northern arizona. >> i'm sure he's proud of himself. >> reporter: it was hard work, determination, and talent that helped make grijalva's olympic dream come true.
