so glad these folks are with us. >> man, i've got to tell you, sg, this crowd is pumped up. we are pumped. we've got some big wins for team usa. >> we are so ready to cheer a red, white, and blue. and gold, so much gold. beach volleyball's a-team, april ross and alix klineman, gold looks good on them. plus craig sat down with the stars of the u.s. women's soccer team after they took home the bronze, some calling this the end of an era. coming up, what they're saying about all of that. we're also covering two major stories here at home, including the coronavirus. delta variant is causing a major shift and it is in the wrong direction. and in northern california, the dixie fire is continuing to grow after completely destroying the historic town of greenville. we're going to have reports on both of those in just a moment. let's begin with the action over in tokyo. and for that, let's say good morning to craig.

klineman winning gold, sweeping australia. >> the a-team with an a plus performance. >> reporter: with their families cheering back home, ross and klineman doing it all. >> april ross. acer. >> reporter: playing through sweltering conditions, ross snagging her third career medal and first goal while klineman's olympic debut ends with a top prize. ross and klineman say their gold medal match was by far the hottest. the sun was beating down on them and the sand was like fire. at one point they checked and the thermometer showed it was well past 120 degrees. but in the end there was no stopping this dynamic duo. it's a big weekend on the court for usa basketball. the women's team back in the gold medal game after crushing serbia overnight. now just one win from their seventh consecutive gold. while the men's squad prepares to face france tonight for their

from tokyo after representing our country with pride. we are so proud of all of them. with that, let's take a look at the medal board ghrinot w. team usa is till on top with the most medals and doing really well. but when it comes to gold medals, china is still on top. but team usa is catching up, so that's the good news today. we also have an update just in. you may remember an athlete that hoda profiled earlier in the week. his name is jordan windel. he is a platform diver. he has an incredible story. he was adopted from a cambodian orphanage. he and his father overcame so much in their lives. he has qualified for the semi finals in platform diving. we are going to be rooting him and team usa on as they go for the gold. craig, back to you. >> yes, we are. tom llamas there. we will have much more in tokyo throughout the morning, but tonight in primetime, catch the stars of the u.s. men's basketball team going for gold

live against france, coverage starting at 8:00 p.m. eastern. hoda, we'll send it back to you. >> and another shout-out to jordan. so happy that he made it. let's turn now to the coronavirus. the cdc now reporting cases have soared 43% in the last week alone. and with the new school year on the way, health officials are warning the fall and winter months could bring even more trouble. nbc's kerry sanders is in florida. that's the state dealing with one of the country's biggest spikes. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. look, as hospitals are struggling to keep up, large scale events like the monster jam with these big trucks will go forward this weekend. we're at the bb&t center here in sunrise. an estimated 20,000 fans will come to attend. masks are not required but they are encouraged. and, of course, health officials and the organizers recognize that large gatherings like this is how the coronavirus spreads.

this morning, the highly contagious delta variant is leaving much of the country battling a late summer spike. new cases and hospitalizations are exploding across the south. >> if florida and louisiana were countries and not states, they would be number one and two in the world for the incidence of covid. >> reporter: the strength of the delta variant surprising even moderna president dr. stephen hogue. the cdc director warning of delta's spread. >> our vaccines are working exceptionally well. they continue to work well for delta. but what they can't do the any more is prevent transmission. >> reporter: some major companies, amazon, wells fargo and microsoft now delaying their plans for corporate employees to return to the office amid concerns over delta. the surgeon general and vaccine makers are hopeful that shots for those under 12 could be approved in the coming months, but not before kids return to the classroom.

>> there is no question we're going to see outbreaks in schools with this delta variant. the question is how many and how big will they get. >> in florida, republican governor ron desantis continues to defy cdc guidance for masking indoors. one school superintendent is pleading with the governor for a mask mandate writing in part, in the last ten days alone, before school has even opened, four school-aged children in leon county have been admitted to local hospitals. the issue has set off conflict between parents, officials and other parents in multiple states with anti-mask protesters taking over some school board meetings. all across the south, alarming outbreaks are wreaking havoc. in mississippi, there are only six open icu beds in the entire state. in louisiana, 50 hospitals say they cannot care for all the patients coming in. in austin, texas, doctors are

calling it the fourth wave. officials are noting that vaccination rates in many areas are going up as fears of the variant grow. pleading with the public to protect themselves and others before it's too late. >> most people know someone who is sick right now. how do you help families get that lesson without having to live through it themselves? >> reporter: in some southern states like oklahoma, alabama, mississippi, louisiana, they're actually seeing an impact by the rising numbers. more people are now showing up to get vaccines. in fact, in the last two weeks in tennessee, they've seen a 90% increase in people showing up to get their vaccines. and, of course, all of this is happening as the delta variant spreads and people are concerned how that might impact kids who are about to go back to school. hoda. >> it's on a lot of parents' minds. thank you. state lawmakers here in new york are accelerating their push to impeach embattled governor andrew cuomo after that report

accusing him of sexually harassing 11 women. now the governor has a new deadline to defend himself. gabe gutierrez has the latest. >> savannah, good morning. the state assembly's judiciary committee says it's wrapping up the impeachment investigation and the burning question in albany is what is cuomo's next move? >> reporter: this morning, governor cuomo is showing no signs of backing down. jake jacobs is the chairman of new york's democratic party, who spoke to cuomo. >> i was very clear and direct with the governor. i thought that his political decision was untenable. he was very clear that he had felt that his side of the story had not been fully aired and he wanted to do that. >> reporter: but calls for the governor to resign are mounting and the state assembly is moving swiftly to impeach him after new york's attorney general this week alleged cuomo sexually harassed 11 women, including a state trooper. cuomo, who has denied any

wrongdoing, has been holed up here inside the governor's executive mansion and hasn't spoken publicly since his prerecorded statement tuesday. >> and the facts are much different than what has been portrayed. >> reporter: the state assembly is giving him a week from friday to provide any additional evidence to defend himself. the governor appreciates the opportunity and will be cooperating. phil stick is on the judiciary committee which plans to meet monday. at this point, are there enough votes to impeach the governor? >> yes. >> reporter: the impeachment inquiry covers the sexual harassment allegations, accusations that his administration undercounted the number of nursing home deaths early in the pandemic as well as questions over whether he used state resources to help write a book. book. cuomo has denied those allegations. if you were to say something to the governor right now, what would you say? >> i would say put the best interests of the people of the

state of new york above yourself. >> reporter: and lawmakers say cuomo could be impeached by early september, but then the case would move to the state senate in order to formally remove him from office. that process could drag on for months which is why so many lawmakers are urging the governor to resign now. >> gabe, thank you very much. now moving to california where this morning one of the largest and most destructive wildfires in the state's history is growing. the dixie fire already wiping out an historic gold rush town in northern california as the flames spread. evacuation orders are widening. steve patterson joins us from what is left of greenville. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. it is eerie to be standing here. just hours ago, downtown greenville, california, officials say now about 75% of all the structures in town have burned to the ground, leaving

residents to worry and wonder whether or not they have a home to return to. this morning, a historic small town burned off the map. residents of greenville haunted by the thought of a home that stood proudly for generations reduced to rubble in mere minutes. >> there were a couple of towers of flame twice as tall as the trees. >> reporter: the dixie fire, the fifth largest in the state's history, causing powerful plumes of smoke affecting air quality out to the midwest that could continue to spread. in greenville, losing nothing but the ash of homes and businesses in its wake. >> we lost greenville tonight. >> it was scary. it was one of those apocalyptic movies you see. fire and wind and people going everywhere. >> reporter: david rudd has lived in greenville for 50 years. he vak waited with a truck full of belongings and precious cargo, 7-week-old kittens. >> the bank, the hotel, buildings that have been there

for over a hundred years. >> reporter: greenville, home to so many since the gold rush now just smoke and ash. but despite the danger, some residents initially refused to leave. >> we have firefighters getting guns pulled out on them because people don't want to evacuate. >> reporter: the blaze consumed more than 320,000 acres, the size of los angeles. >> there is no protection. it's going to sweep through there like a blow torch and take them out. >> reporter: and not far away, the river fire is primed to burn in areas that has been free of fires for centuries. prompting people to evacuate in a moment's notice. >> we finally get people back in there and it's either standing or it's a pile of ash. that's when it will hit us. >> reporter: setting the stakes for another tense and uncertain day against a relentless force. >> pretty humbling. mother nature is nothing to mess with. >> reporter: six of the ten largest wildfires in california history have burned over the course of the last year. officials in this area say the brush is so dry that it only takes one spark to start a new

one. guys, back to you. >> steve, thank you. >> al, i know you have your eye on the fires out west. >> in fact, most likely this will be by the end of the day a top five fire the way it's going right now. look at what's been happening. the potential for fire spread stretching from the northwest all the way into the western plains today. and so this is now the sixth largest fire in california's history. and in the last year, we've had six of the seven largest, but it's going to continue and the smoke is getting caught up by the jet stream and it's making its way east. we're looking smoke as far east as cincinnati, st. louis, chicago, wichita, minneapolis, air quality is going to be a real issue there. for the rest of the country, it feels like sumner the northeast, sunshine, higher humidity. heavy rain down in florida today. showers making their way along with this cold front into the upper midwest. hot and sunny through the southwest. that's the big problem. we may see some heat-based thunderstorms. those could trigger more

i'm cierra johnson in san francisco, i don't think many of us ever imagined a time where a five-day work week wasn't a thing but according to a new survey that is exactly what a lot of employers are leaning toward. they're leaning toward a shortened workweek. the group the bay area council surveyed more than 200 companies over three months and concluded a majority of offices plan to have workers in the office three days or less in the future. now it's time to get a look at that friday forecast. kari hall has a look at the numbers. >> we are starting out with the clouds and fog but as we go into today it's going to heat up headed towards the mid-90s for our inland areas. for tomorrow slightly cooler and that cooling trend continues sunday into early next week. looking pretty good with a lot of sunshine. we have to watch our air quality for san francisco, every day we're looking at highs in the upper 60s, clouds and fog with peeks of sunshine. once again we're continuing to watch that smoke that could be coming in from nearby fires. marcus. >> thanks.

played people go again. when you guys won the gold, they said the feel-like temperature was like 120 plus degrees. what was it like playing in the elements like that >> we -- i mean, it was really hot. i think today was the hottest day and we played later, kind of in the middle of the day so we just did everything we could. we have an amazing crew that gives us ice vests to cool down as we're going into the stadium. during warm-up, we have ice buckets, slushies. so it's just about managing it we trained in florida to get ready for it and i feel like we handled it pretty well >> well, obviously, because you've got the gold medal. but it seems like -- i mean, there's hot and surface of the sun. aren't your feet hot the sand >> they water down the sand, so it's okay on the court when we're actually playing but -- >> yeah, i feel like the sand today was the hottest day and we played in the middle of the day when we had been playing at 9:00

a.m. the other days. it was brutal, but it was so worth it >> april, you had a good luck charm with you and more than a gooduc lchk arm, you had someone who you know was watching over you as you were playing. you were having conversations with her tell us a little bit about your mom. >> yeah. i wear this necklace school, and she passed away when she gave it to me in high school, and she passed away when i was in college and i wear it for every olympics, only for special occasions and, yeah, i'm out there. i talk to her beforehand while i'm out there and ask her to help me get things to maybe go our way. i just feel like she's watching down and helping us every step of the way so, yeah, i have her with me >> she must be so proud. april, your story in particular, you had silver in london and then bronze in rio, and now you have the whole set, one to match every outfit that has to feel pretty darn good >> yeah. alix said it best.

of the most recognizable starts stars of the tokyo olympics. >> that's right. we're talking about the u.s. women's soccer team. after being upset in the semifinals, they bounced back to win those bronze medals. i had a chance to sit down with them this afternoon, the faces of that team -- carli lloyd, megan rapinoe and alex morgan. the expectation was coming in that you win gold. you win bronze. do you consider that a disappointment or are you satisfied? >> we're pretty happy. obviously we wanted to win gold. i don't think we say that's disappointment. >> you come, you play the game, you want to win. you want to win every game. >> i don't think we personally deserved to even win a gold medal the way we were playing. >> really? >> to have played so well in the last third-place match, to come away with the bronze, we earned that. and i think that's what makes it super special. >> alex morgan, megan rapinoe and carli lloyd helped raise the

profile of women's soccer, even using their platform to fight for equal pay for female athletes. some say the spotlight has attracted stiffer competition. is that a thought that's occurred to you at all? there's so many young girls who want to play and have gotten really good over the past 15 or 20 years that the rest of the world has finally just caught up. >> i mean, it starts with investment, you know? and equal opportunity. and when you have those building blocks and obviously it's -- you're going to have the rest of the world catching up with us, but i think we're still hanging out on top, you know? we still have that number one ranking. >> you know what they say. they say this is the end of an era. have you heard that? >> oh, gosh. sounds ominous. >> yeah. who is "they"? >> we have been very successful for a long time. but it's not like we just go out there and, like, kick back and just crush -- like this is hard. it's really hard.

soccer nine, ten months out of the year. >> yeah. fascinating conversation with those ladies. >> cool. >> that's cool. thank you, craig. let's get a check of the forecast. >> mr. roker. >> so we're about a third of the way through hurricane season. and the national hurricane center has updated their outlook. 15 to 21 named storms. 7 to 10 hurricanes, major hurricanes, 3 to 5. at the beginning of the season, you can see they upped it. 13 to 20, 6 to 10, still a number of major hurricanes. right now we have warmer than average temperatures, climate change, temperatures provide more energy for the hurricanes. plus weaker winds because of a northern jet stream. that creates less wind shear so it doesn't tear up the storms and a stormy african coast. the monsoon expecting to kick off more tropical waves. in fact, we've already got two now. invest area off the coast of africa, 60% chance of formation. 20% of this area around the leeward islands.

and you can see the invest has a great big development zone. we're looking at this development zone near puerto rico over the next several days. so we'll be watching that, as well. rest of the country, we are looking like a very summerlike day today in the northeast. on into e thiooh river valley. heavy rain down to northern florida. hot and sunny in the southwest, unfortunately. more showers and storms out west and those windy conditions may fan those wildfires out there. that's what's going on around the country. >> i'm meteorologist kari hall. for our inland valleys it will be hotter with the temperatures reaching into the mid 90s but that spike in temperatures will be very brief. we will see it cooling down by the end of the weekend into early next week. looking pretty good with highs in the mid to upper 80s. san francisco is looking at the same steady weather pattern. fog each morning. even some mist and drizzle. but some afternoon clearing with temperatures reaching into the upper 60s and that's what we'll see through at least the middle of next week.

the most decorated woman in olympic track and field history. it was a pretty big moment. i got to speak to allyson just before she left for tokyo. while tokyo marks her fifth olympics, she's a very different runner than in rio five years ago. she's faced life threatening and life changing events, challenges she says have only made her stronger. >> here comes allyson felix. allison is racing her way back into the top three! felix makes the team. >> at 35 years old, she's made the team five times at every summer olympics since athens in 2004. a jaw-dropping run, six gold medals, more than any other woman in track and field history. but at the olympic trials in june, it was a nail biter with

ters of a 400. >> it seems to me you were a veteran showing everyone how it's done. what goes through your mind in those seconds? >> everything just kind of hit me. i've been thinking about this for so long, but to actually make the team in that moment, it was pretty indescribable. >> a moment made more sweet because of one adorable super fan from the stands, 2-year-old daughter, cameron. >> she's so into cheering, go mama go, run, mama run. >> training for the olympics in a pandemic was not easy. a year delay. finding a place to run with local tracks shut down. she and her coach had to improvise. can you set that scene for me? allyson felix blazing through her neighborhood. >> i think my neighbors finally got what i did. seeing my coach yell at me through the streets. it was nice. i had some people come out and cheer me on. >> but allyson has dealt with greater diversity. after rio, she and her husband

decided to start a family. but she was stunned with the life threatening diagnosis of preeclampsia. forced to have an emergency c-section, eight weeks early. her tiny daughter fighting for her life. >> i remember being in the nicu every day and watching her fight for her life and how heavy that time period was and now to see how she's thriving. it makes me want to do more work in that space and bring more awareness to the issue. >> felix says being a mother has made her an advocate. she battled her longtime sponsor nike over postpartum pay of athletes, ultimately breaking her nondisclosure agreement with the company to take a stand. >> i want protection around maternity. i want that to change. >> it took a lot of courage to speak out. why did you feel that was the right time? what went into that decision? >> i was completely terrified to speak out. i didn't know what was going to come of it. but the one thing that really gave me the courage was being the mother of a little girl.

i didn't want her to have these same battles 20 years down the line that i was facing and that so many of my colleagues have faced, so many women before me. i just felt like it was time. and no matter how scared i was, i had to step forward and to share my own story. >> instead of that famous nike swoosh on her foot, at the olympic trials, felix wore her own name brand and clothing by athleta. they announced a ground beak breaking family to help other female olympians cover child care expenses while they compete. why is that so important to you? >> obviously, as a mom, i know firsthand those struggles that we are facing. and i didn't want competition, child care, to be a burden for other athletes. >> and felix was quick to support fellow runner sha'carri richardson, suspended over a marijuana violation. i wonder what you thought about
