minutes. we begin with the pandemic. we deal with another covid surge companies are making adjustments once again. a new study found two-thirds of bay area companies now say they expect workers won't be in the office more than three days a week. even when the pandemic ends. we're in dublin this afternoon with the latest on what this means for workers and traffic. >> the daily saga for decades bay area work commutes have been the stuff of nightmares. that all ended with the pandemic for many. many were told to work from home. what happens when the pandemic ends? >> we're looking at a two day a week return to work. >> she like so many working parents discovering a new work life balance during the pandemic. >> i prefer to work from home full-time if i could. i feel productive that way. >> not a surprising statement. studying pandemic workplace and

traffic trends since april. >> 40% of employers said that the three day a week would be the new norm. >> surveying 200 employers in july. across nine counties. before the pandemic, 93% of employers required employees to spend four to fife days in the office each week. the latest numbers show 19% plan to keep five di workweeks and 13% will have employees come into the workplace four days weekly. >> it's a cross industry. it's confirming that regardless of your size or industry, location, people are looking to have a few day workweek in the workplace. >> more people work from home, there's concern over traffic patterns in the latest findings. >> if you look at the bay bridge traffic level, those for the last two months have been nearly at prepandemic traffic levels. >> counsel has been tracking the delta variant effect on getting people back to work. >> we have 21 million fully

vaccinated. >> fears of a breakthrough infection maybe fuelling a reluctance for many to return to mass transit. >> while traffic levels remain high, researchers say that the bay area will likely see 1 million fewer commuters daily on a permanent basis once the pandemic is truly over. >> after months of zoom calls and virtual classes, most public schools in oakland are returning full-time to the classroom. that long awaited fers day of school is monday. out of 36,000 students only 850 opted to stick with virtual. the district is not requiring all teachers to get vaccinated but everyone must wear a mask inside. schools will have rapid covid-19 test kits on site in case students or staff show symptoms

online learning during a pandemic created new challenges that they would not have faced in a classroom. >> i have been getting straight a's. and i this whole covid situation learn at home situation, which she can turn her less than desirable grade into a simple pass on her transcript. thanks to a new state law approved in july. high school students across california can replace one or several grades from last school year to a pass, no pass. >> she introduced it to help students struggling during the pandemic. >> this wasn't the doing of kids. of a high school jr. who has a stellar academic record and could not learn spanish online. let's help them out and relieve

them of the stress. of maybe a lower grade. and let them compete like everybody else. in a normal year. >> the goal is protect students gpa as they prepare for college. including berkeley say they will accept the pass, no pass option in their admission. some private schools also say they will do the same. the law is so new, many universities have not announced their policy. so what should families do? >> my rule of thumb if you have an a or b in a class. keep that. if you have a d in a class, those are potentially a good option for choosing the pass, no pass option. c depends on the situation. i recommend reaching out to the school counsellor. >> she doesn't think the law will lead to students changing many courses to pass no pass in

it will implement a vaccine mandate. united airlines one of the larger employers in the area will require all employees to be vaccinated for covid-19. the rule will take effect five weeks after the fda fully approves the vaccine. or five weeks after september 20. which ever comes first. >> so, tokyo isn't the only place where people are earning medals. >> awarding a few locally to viewers like you. >> when we invut you to share

we have been telling you about this all week long. because the fires to the north just continue to grow in size. and just really rage way off into northern california. we had a small wind shift today. that is bringing in this smoke. from walnut creek. also concord into the distance. visibility is three quarters of a mile. you need to watch out for not only the visibility. also the smoke level. it's the most unhealthy in the north bay. and also for the east bay. coast not that bad. because we have some fog. the good air quality. the north bay and east bay at you have to limit out door exposure. especially with respiratory problems. bekeep this in place through 5:30 tonight. in the red and orange color. but as we head into later on the tonight and tomorrow morning the fog will pick up at the coastline. you'll see that smoke at least the thickest moving off to the

east. we'll stay with that trend as we head through tomorrow morning. we have the blue and green color. that's the haze that will be with us. through tomorrow morning. also into tomorrow afternoon. not a totally sunny blue sky. some of the thick smoke will be passing out. we'll stay with the same situation sunday. and the lingering haze from the fires. at the same time we're getting that haze tomorrow morning, we'll see fog at the coast. kind of just an odd, gross looking morning. even see the low clouds and fog right here at the immediate coastline. to the north bay and patchy clouds for the east bay. temperatures in the morning start off in the 50s. through the south bay and peninsula. plenty cool 50s for the east bay. san francisco. highs tomorrow cooling off a few degrees. that will make it enjoyable. livermore 92 degrees.
