news. >> the olympics games are coming to a close soon. the ceremony is tomorrow. before we say good-bye to the olympics, we have some spoiler alerts. we are going to be talking about competition results before it airs on primetime. so if you don't want to know, go somewhere else for about a minute then come back. >> liz has the highlights. >> it's hard to believe we are in at the final day of the games. team usa is racking up those medals. the closing ceremony is a few hours away. i had to break out the closing ceremony early, the jacket coming in handy in the rain. the past few weeks have been full of ups and downs. team usa looking to add more

medals in these final events. >> kevin durant leads the united states to the fourth straight gold medal. >> the men's basketball team avenged its early loss to franct to and found a way to get domin women's relay. allyson felix is now the most decorated female athlete of all time. previously that record was held by carl lewis. nelly korda edged out japan for a gold medal. but in the baseball game, the u.s. fell to the host country with a 3-2 finish. on the mat, a silver from sarah

hildebrand. in the equestrian team event, jessica springsteen made her olympic debut with a silver. team usa water polo, those women came out with a big win, a gold. and seeing our hometown hero continue her scoring streak. there are more gold medals up for grabs. women's basketball, and women's volleyball. they will be taking on brazil hoping to get their first gold medal. >> liz, before we let you go, one more day. any more uniforms to show? you have a different outfit on every single day. >> i am wearing the close

uniform jacket, but we never got to show you some weightlifting swag we have. a pair of medals went home with weightlifters. and katie nye broke a record, three of them actually. and this belt, gives you abdominal support while you are crunching. >> nice, liz. team usa has chosen track and field star kara as the closing ceremony flag bearer. winger is one of two captains for the track and field team. she placed 17th in the javelin, her second best performance ever. you can catch it tomorrow night starting at 5:00 p.m.

bring your family to watch an adorable program. you have two chances. one is held at noon and the other at 3:00 p.m. this was just about two weeks ago. the opening ceremony also held in japan town, we hope you will join us tomorrow afternoon. >> moving you forward. three san francisco supervisors say they are going to reopen the great highway on the city's southern border to traffic in just nine days. in the past year and a half, it has only been open to walkers and cyclists. and it is reported there is a growing grassroots effort to put the brakes on the reopening. >> it's all about raising awareness.

people who live along a two-mile stretch of san francisco's great highway, planning to reopen to traffic on weekdays in less than two weeks. these two high schoolers join the effort. >> this is a perfect way for me to bike, walk safely, not worry about cars and the stress that can bring. >> it has been a great place to come out to and be outside and be around other people. >> closed since april, 2020, the great highway has been san francisco's second most used open space second behind san francisco park. families and visitors alike find solace during these trying times. >> it raises my spirits and hope for humanity. it gives us freedom. >> we need open space the for everyone to be able to recreate responsibly. >> and there is a group

spearheading the effort. >> for them to take it away from people -- it's bad for the planet, for the c and bad for politics. having the great highway closed on weekends and holidays will make sure that residents and visitors can still enjoy this incredible space while recognizing the needs of our families and residents who need to get to school during the week. they will keep the pressure on to get them to change their mind before august 16. kids going back to school this month all over the bay area. and two brand new schools in south bay are ready for students. the two schools can serve up to 1600 students in the santa clara unified school district.

next year a high school will open nearby. our firefighters on the front lines of the dixie fire burning northwest of reno. a look at some of the damage left behind the town of grownville. -- greenville. you can see most of the town is gone. homes destroyed. the fire grew to more than 446,000 acres, almost four times the size of the city of san jose to give you perspective. 184 structures have been destroyed, thousands more threatened. people are unaccounted for. fires from up north moving over the bay area. a look at walnut creek. smoggy, hazy and causing breathing problems for some

people. >> we are seeing those changes. the sea breeze is helping out the coast, but as you head inland, you can see some of the haze outside with moderate air quality. you see the fog in san francisco, the sea breeze helping us out. in the green here good air quality, but as you move a few miles inland into the tri-valley, that's where you see the moderate air quality. it's an hour by hour forecast. you can see the sea breeze. as the winds back off you will probably see more of a red to orange sunrise and a stronger sea breeze could bring better air quality as we head towards sunday evening. hazy skies, but the worst of it

to the east in northern a chance of thunderstorms to our local mountains. forecast in ab minutes. >> thanks. just in, a violent night on oakland streets, only about a ten-minute drive from each other. officers were first called to the coliseum about 3:30 this morning. a man had been shot, taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. and then officers were called to 35th avenue. they found another man shot. he also died. neither has been identified. police are row lease -- releasing nothing about suspects or motive. and at 1:00 this morning, when a fire department arrived, the vehicle had gone right into the side of the building.

the driver died. investigation is under way. and this is what the alameda fire department tweeted, car slammed into the house. the driver was taken to the hospital. people inside the home were not hurt. after removing the car, police had to build a temporary structure to stabilize the home. and the republican party said they would not endorse one candidate. delegates feel endorsing one person could divide the party and decrease gop turnout. in a state they say -- before this morning's votes, leaders decided they should endorse one of the four top

a reminder for one south bay group that the battle against hate crimes against asians isn't over. a prayer vigil was held today. they marched to city hall where they heard from several different speakers. they call for a change in policing, and funds for health

care. they say the message against hate needs to be ongoing because hate crimes are still happening. >> we talk about anti-asian violence has phased from the news cycle, but the impact to the opportunity is ongoing, hasn't stopped. >> and they look to teach how to deescalate violence. union leaders for the san francisco sheriff's department tell them they are going to quit before getting a vaccine. we have more on the standoff as the deadline approaches. >> san francisco sheriffs deputies work at jails, courts, halls. if they don't get vaccinated, they will lose their job. it is said the mandate is unfair and 150 deputies are willing to

leave. >> they are willing to retire early, seek employment elsewhere and quit. we have a bad staffing problem. >> deputies can get religious or medical exemptions, but with a september 15th deadline looming, they think testing should be an option. >> it is said -- in a statement, the department of human resources says in part -- >> the sheriffs deputy association says it's a position that will lead to employee departures in a wide range of

city departments. covid cases among young children are rising in texas pushing hospitals to the limit. they say when you add respiratory illnesses, it is putting hospitals at or near capacity. in kids underage 10 in travis county there has been a jump in covid cases to early july when the county was averaging about 3 cases a day. now it's 60. >> the portion of the kids getting severely kids is the same, but the number is higher because more kids are stick. >> the cdc recommends kids 12 and older get the vaccine and recommendation that kids 2 to 12 wear masks.

during a second saturday session the senators broke a filibuster easily getting 60 votes. the final vote is expected next week. chuck schumer says the senate will stay in session until this bill is done. it would get spending on things like roads, trains, charging plants and more. and pushing for construction of cleaner projects. they are calling on contractors to chews equipment environmentally friendly and asking for them to use more recycled products. they say sustainable projects will play a part for everyone in

the future. >> if you are not at the table, you are on the menu. >> the agency is calling for a national strategy to invest in physical structure. >> the picture behind us makes it look like the air is fairly clear but you can still smell the smoke. >> around the bay, we have the benefit of the sea breeze. but inland we have a lot of up level smoke and you can see it when you look at the upper part of the bay to downtown. 82 degrees. moderate air quality closer to san jose. out toward the tri-valley, in and out of the moderate air quality and it is pretty warm. not quite as hot but still hazy

skies at walnut creek. you see the skies closer to downtown san francisco, you have sunshine, but a different story across the golden gate bridge. you see the wind out of the west at 15 miles per hour. it is the wedge of marine air pushed inland that is helping with the air quality. as the breeze comes through we will see clear, but just like tomorrow the sea breeze will pick up and the coast and bay should see moderate air quality levels, but as you head above 2,000 feet you may see locally healthy levels. now for the morning you will find drizzle and mist along the coastline, temperatures mid to upper 50s with highs tomorrow similar to today.

close to 80 in san jose. 70 in oakland and 70s to upper 80s around north bay. look how the smoke is bringing numbers up to 200, even down to fresno. the sea breeze is helping out the bay area. unhealthy at times. not much thunderstorms right now around the sierra, but wednesday and thursday stay tuned. futurecast tries to bring another surge of moisture. we know it as a monsoon surge. might see something like it trying to come up wednesday and thursday as we head to the middle part of the week. right now the better thunderstorm chances will likely be toward the sierra. we will be watching that closely with high fire danger around the state.

country. nearly half a million attended last year's event undeterred by covid, spreading itide. this is the first time fans were allowed back in levi stadium since january of 2020. today was the annual dwight clark day in honor of the great receiver who died of lou gehrig's disease. you can see no selfies, keeping a 20-foot buffer between team and fans. last year fans were not allowed at training camp or any games. one man drove 2 1/2 hours to see the team in action today. >> i really need to see the fans come together. the players can hear the roar of
