thanks for joining us for a special edition of nbc4 news. >> let's get to our top story. wildfire smoke in the bay area and may be causing breathing problems for some people. some parts are worse than others, rob. >> walnut creek, that is smoke. another red to orange sunset on the way. an san francisco, it looks like fog. and with the push of sea air, you see as you head inland, the red and purple, that is unhealthy to downright hazardous. the sea breeze is helping things out.

inland county and down to san jose. it is an inland sea breeze. tomorrow morning as the breeze slows down we will see a little more smoke to start the day. another red or orange sunrise, but a stronger sea breeze may help our air quality. we will have a warming trend, coming up in about ten minutes. >> you can track the weather by downloading our free nbc bay area app. punch in your zip code and it will be tailored for your neighborhood. >> firefighters on the front lines of the dixie fire. this afternoon we are getting a look at some of the damage left behind in what was the town of greenville. most of that town is gone. businesses leveled, homes destroyed. the dixie fire is about 50 miles

north. it grew to almost four times the city of san jose. 184 structures have been destroyed. thousands more threatened. four people unaccounted for. containment has actually 21% contained this afternoon. >> many schools in oakland prepare to welcome back students. today a caravan of cars and students paraded calling for teacher vaccine mandates. they are calling for the district to expand distance learning programs. the distance is not requiring all teachers to be vaccinated. those who aren't will not have to be tested for covid unless they are exposed. advocates say children need to be protected. >> they should stay in distance

learning until there is a vaccine available. there need to be programs like there were. families are trying to keep their families safe. >> the district says out of 36,000 students in the district, 850 are still sticking to virtual learning. as kids get ready to head back to the classroom, two brand new schools are ready. they are on banker road in north san jose. the two schools can serve up to 1600 students. next year the mcdonald high school will open nearby. moving you forward. the great highway in san francisco is said to be reopening to traffic later this month. for the last year and a half, the road has only been open to walkers and cyclists. as tom jensen reports, some like

it better without the cars and trucks. >> this has become a 17-acre sanctuary for many in the area. and just days before it is to reopen, an effort to keep it open space is kicking into high gear. people who live along a two-mile stretch of san francisco's great highway talk about the plans to reopen the roadway to vehicle traffic on weekdays in less than two weeks. these two high schoolers join the effort this weekend. >> this is a perfect way for me to bike and walk safely, not worry about cars and stress that can bring. >> it's a great place to come out to and be outside and be around other people while still being safe. >> closed to vehicles since april of 2020, the great highway has been the most used open

space behind golden gate state park. families and visitors alike find solace during these trying times. >> it raises my spirits and hope for humanity. it gives us freedom. >> we responsibly. >> sf is spearheading an effort to make people aware. >> i think it's bad for the planet, our children and bad for politics. >> the mayor who supports the reopening said having the great highway open on weekends and holidays will ensure people can enjoy this great space while recognizing the needs of families and residents who need to get to work during the week. the number of people joining this grassroots effort seem committed to changing their

streets. police investigating two homicides about ten-minute drive away from each other. first police were called to san leandro street. they found a man shot and took him to the hospital. three hours later, officers were called to 35th avenue, a few blocks from the b.a.r.t. station. he had been shot. suspects or motives haves not been released. and a crash left a huge hold in the side of a store at 1:00 this morning. when the fire department arrived, the vehicle had gone into the side of the building. and in dublin, another car crash, this one right into the house. alameda fire department tweeted these pitchers.

this is on beachwood loop in dublin. the driver was taken to the hospital. the people in home were not hurt. the gop said they would not endorse one candidate in the upcoming recall election against gavin newsom. in a statement they say, quote -- before this morning's vote gop decided whether to endorse one of the candidates. the recall ballot includes 46 candidates. ballots are going out in the mail by august 16th. >> much more coming up for you including bay area deputies saying they are going to leave their jobs if they are forced to

continues. israeli defense forces released video of the targets saying the targets were hamas sites. this launch comes two months after an 11-day war. no reports of injuries on either side. >> getting closer to a deal on that massive infrastructure deal. during a second saturday session, the senate broke a filibuster. this is a big step towards striking a bipartisan agreement between everybody. the final vote is expected to happen next week. chuck schumer said they will stay? session until that is settled. it would help on things such as roads, bridges, airports, broad band and electric vehicle charging. the battle against asian hate crimes is not over. in san jose a prayer vigil was

held and rally against anti-asian violence. they are calling for a change in policing, redirecting funds from prison to education and health care and commitment to fighting white supremacy. they say hate crimes are still happening. >> we notice that anti-asian violence talk has faded from the news cycle, but it hasn't stopped. >> and a program to teach communities thousand deescalate violence. >> deputies say they are going to quit before getting a mandatory vaccine. we have more on the standoff as the deadline approaches. >> sheriffs deputies work at

courts, jails, hospitals andet vaccinated, they will lose their job. they said it was unfair and more than 150 deputies are willing to leave. into they are willing to retire early. we have a really bad staffing problem right now. >> deputies can get religious or medical exemptions, but with a september 15th deadline approaching, union leaders believe testing should also be an option. >> we would like to see san francisco in alignment with state guidelines. in a statement, the department of human resources says, in part --

the sheriffs deputy association says there are departures in a wide variety of departments. there are fears of a super spreader event as people gather for the annual sturgis motorcycle rally in sturgis, south dakota. more than 700,000 people are expected to attend. bikers from across the country and world are there. it looks under control there, but we saw so many bikes lined up earlier. last year there were 500,000 and spread covid, according to contact tracers.

and construction city is pushing for cleaner work. it wants the industry to use cleaner products and use solar powered trailers. they say sustainable projects will play a big role in the future and everybody needs to get on board. >> if you are not on the table, you are on the menu. >> and they are calling on a national strategy, with tax incentives including sustainability and more. >> a sea breeze is helping out san francisco and bay area, but out there you still have haze that will likely lead to a red

sunset in a few hours. there are moderate air levels around san jose. look at livermoore. late day run at the mid 90s. also seeing 90s around walnut creek. probably seeing some of the worst ofhe air quality as you head up into the hills where we have seen some of the warnings for unhealthy groups. thanks to the sea breeze, around the central bay, that is pushing a lot of the smoke inland towards the tri-valley. you will see a little more smoke settling in for the morning hours and by afternoon and evening, smoke getting pushed inland. that means places like sacramento valley will see smoke

again. tomorrow -- again, the worst of it is getting pushed to the east. through the morning what will be moving in is the drizzle and clouds along the coast. we will start your sunday morning off and highs of 90 around livermore. so the low clouds is going to keep the air conditioning running along the coast. healthy air all of the way down the central valley. look at the numbers in fresno. tomorrow more unhealthy air likely hangs out around the valley as the wind starts to push more smoke out of the bay area. one item to watch, could see

welcome back. baseball is back in levi stadium for the first time. the dwight clark event was held. more than 19,000 fans were on hand for today's practice. they were loud for just about every completion that guy through. and that guy. they all want to see jimmy garoppolo. fans raised the energy inside the place and the players noticed. >> we still had trouble hearing

each other and the coaches. me personally, i hadn't played in front of fans since 2018. it has been an extended period of time for me. it definitely felt good. >> also could be the loud music they played. 49ers will play their first preseason game next saturday against the chiefs. a's and rangers. 4-2. and then matt olson with a double to right. part of a seven-run inning for the green and gold and they go on to beat the rangers 12-3. and heck was up two with three holes to play. kentucky for the birdie. so heck must make it. she just lips it out. heck falls in 18 holes in the
