worse to live through. countries will make large scale changes with only months to keep that from happening. extreme weather is becoming more common all over the world including in greece. over the last week large fires have been raging across the country forcing thousands of people to abandon their homes. nbc's claudio levanga joins us with the latest. greece's prime minister has been vocal blaming climate change for the devastation there. >> reporter: good morning, phillip. greece, as it has happened anywhere else in the world, greece is also experiencing recently a record-breaking heat wave now 117 fahrenheit have been reported in some parts of greece in the last few days which in turn this heat wave is fueling these raging wildfires it has been fueling the wildfire in greece for the past week, especially on the island of evia which is the second largest

island and some of the lush forest have been destroyed also destroyed, houses, businesses, entire villages. more than 3,000 people, mostly residents and holiday makers, were forced to evacuate overnight. firefighters are finding it very difficult to contain the fire because the fire is now so big the billowing clouds of ash and smoke have completely enveloped the northern part of the island. some help came from egypt, france, spain and firefighters came to help what would really help would be rain which is not forecasted in the near future. more countries which of course makes this an ongoing situation. >> it's a global problem they're all going to be dealing with for the rest of our lives. thank you. in the united states over 100 large wildfires continue to rage across 15 states. the largest in the nation is the dixie fire which is now the second largest fire in

california's history nbc has this report. >> reporter: the dixie fire exploding to almost half a million acres. over twice the size of new york city driving more than 30,000 people out of their homes inferno has destroyed nearly 600 structures, threatening another 13,000 four firefighters injured during a desperate firefight. the flames only 21% contained. california's governor surveying the remnants of the town of greenville >> people are displaced and many will never return. you're seeing here not just a loss of homes and housing, you're seeing entire communities wiped off the map. >> reporter: the myers family opened their doors to many fleeing the flames. >> he comes and hangs out. >> reporter: sheltering displaced neighbors. >> we're lucky so far because we're still here. >> reporter: bob johns is one of

cases. here's nbc's kathy park. >> reporter: cities across the country sounding the alarm as covid cases explode to dangerous levels austin activating its emergency alert system warning residents the situation is dire. just 6 icu beds available and for the third time, florida broke a record for daily covid cases as doctors say more kids are getting sick >> there's more children in the hospital today than we've had at any point in the past 18 months. >> reporter: in just four days, more than 3,000 kids in louisiana tested positive for the virus and due to the ongoing health emergency, jazz fest in new orleans is canceled for the second year in a row this weekend hospitalizations in the u.s. topped more than 66,000 a grim milestone crossed twice in just six months to keep the pandemic under control, indoor mask mandates are coming back from baltimore -- >> baltimore's new case count has risen 374%.

senate paved the way for a final vote on a bipartisan infrastructure bill. after spending the day hammering out the amendments, they voted to end the filibuster. tracie potts joins us with the latest final passage could come in just a matter of hours. >> reporter: they will convene at noon eastern time, frances, to continue debating this legislation and then we could see a final vote sometime tomorrow or perhaps early wednesday morning in the senate. the house would have to still consider this. this is the bill that focuses on traditional infrastructure, transportation, roads, bridge projects sending billions towards the public works projects across the country potentially creating lots of jobs as well that legislation has brought support on both sides of the aisle, but democrats are also separately going it alone on a $3.5 trillion proposal to revamp the education system and expand

health care. >> the two-track process is moving along it's been a process that has been a very good process it's taken a while, but it's going to be worth it as hopefully we pass both bills very, very soon. the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the budget resolution with reconciliation. >> pelosi has said all along she will not allow this bill to go through the house unless they get their $5.5 trillion reckless tax and spending bill done at the same time. if you help get this done, you're helping get the $5.5 trillion bill done >> reporter: you heard the senate majority leader talking about reconciliation that is the process that allows democrats to dodge the filibuster and passion that with only 50 votes in the senate. there is stiff opposition from republicans. it will be a tight rope act for democrats requiring virtually
