okay. more schools will go in session today. back to school this morning for oakland unified schools. mike is going to give a look at the commute. but we want to start out with the forecast. >> we were watching the air quality over the weekend got hazy at times and air quality is looking much better. we are starting out this morning with a mostly clear sky, fog near the coast. in oakland reaching 72 degrees. really nice and comfortable and for the coastline we're going to see at times fog and hazy sky, temperatures in the mid 60s and for the inland areas, you'll feel the heat crank back up. we'll talk about that coming up. mike, not clear in san francisco. >> i don't know about the cloud cover, we'll take a look at that, but i'm talking about van ness over at the closure since last week, it's not supposed to reopen until 6:00 a.m. keep that in mind. if you head out there right now you have the intersection closed

and crews in the area, getting off the bay bridge westbound around fremont a disabled vehicle which may be in lanes. no slowing showed up over the last 15 minutes. it's still there as far as chp is concerned. an easy drive for contra costa county and the rest of the bay. back to you. >> thanks, mike. dr. anthony fauci says he is hopeful the fda will give full approval of the covid vaccine by the end of this month. >> he predicted the move would spur a wave of vaccine mandates in the private sector. marianne favro has reaction from businesses in the south bay. >> reporter: so far the vaccines americans have received have only been granted emergency use approval by the fda. but today, the u.s. government's top infectious disease expert is hopeful the fda will soon grant full approval. >> i hope it will be within the next few weeks. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci predicts if the fda grants full approval of existing covid vaccines, you can soon expect to see private companies issue vaccine mandates for employees. >> if that's the case, you're

going to see the empowerment of local enterprises giving mandates that could be colleges, universities, places of business, a whole variety. i strongly support that. >> reporter: the owner of la pizzeria restaurant in campbell has already done, requiring her more than 20 employees to be vaccinated. >> it's good for the staff, the client, the customer that is safe. my staff has already been vaccinated since april, all of them. even though it's not mandatory. >> reporter: she says so far only one employee has had an issue with the request. as the delta variant continues to surge in the bay area and across the nation, president biden recently approved rules requiring federal workers to provide proof of vaccination or

face regular testing and mask mandates. the biden administration has stated that the federal government will not mandate vaccinations beyond the federal workforce. >> i think having a policy this morning a young girl died after losing control of her sa. police say she was riding downhill an valroy drive near la colina park and lost control of the bike and struck a raised curb and flew into the air, hit a concrete wall. she died at the hospital. she was not wearing a helmet. one man is dead and another in the hospital after a shooting at a house party in sunnyvale. it happened saturday night at 10:15 on navarro drive. neighbors describe the home as a short-term rental. investigators say the party was advertised on social media and around 200 teenagers attended. police say the second victim is recovering after surgery and is expected to be okay. to the recall effort of

governor gavin newsom. keep your eye out on your mail because the state is starting to send out those ballots for the recall election and in sonoma county, people will be voting on whether to recall two lawmakers. newsom and district attorney jill ravage. 26% of sonoma county voters would recall governor newsom and 58% are against recalling him. in that same poll, 26% say they would recall the current d.a. jill ravitch, 47% wants her to stay. the ballot needs to be postmarked by september 14th. happening today, bay area demonstrators will rally and march against nuclear weapons. 76 years to the day since the u.s. dropped the first atomic bomb. the bomb dropped on hiroshima. three days later a second bomb on nagasaki. the bombings killed 226,000 people. protesters along with nagasaki

bomb survivor plan to march at the lawrence livermore lab at 9:00 a.m. the dixie fire is now the second largest fire in state history. now it spans an area larger than the city of los angeles. so far those flames have scorched nearly 490,000 acres. at least 400 homes and other structures have burned down, including hundreds in greenville, a town destroyed by the fire last week. four people remain unaccounted for. containment is 21%. >> hard to look at those pictures knowing what so many people have been going through. smoke affecting a lot of people weather not helping. >> it has been windy but i want to take a look at how many acres have burned and compare this to this time has year. at this point in 2020, we know it was definitely a historic fire season. we had 273,000 acres burn but compare that to right now where we've had 876,000 acres burned.

we know the way that 2020 ended up with over 4.25 million acres burned and then we take a look at 2021 where we are once again right now at 876,000 and unfortunately we do have a lot more of our season to go. with climate change, we've seen increasing acreage as well as nearly two times the normal amount of acres burned each year. we're watching this and we'll talk about the weather conditions. so far right now, mike, looks like a light drive. >> a light drive. those numbers, hundreds of thousands of acres burned. the drive just fine. no problems here. drive south bay along the peninsula, east bay talking about oakland schools coming back in session today. you will watch those crosswalks and a little bit later surface street traffic. everything has to adjust when that happens. over here we are looking at a longer drive, a difference coming out of traci and

report. that is prompting talks that the federal reserve could start to pull back on its monetary support of the economy sooner rather than later. the dow and s&p 500 closing at record highs on friday, but the nasdaq tech companies largely rely on lower interest rates to help borrow money to expand their businesses. in focus we're going to be watching for signs of inflation. we'll get reports on both consumer and producer prices. meantime tesla has confirmed that it is pushing production and release of its electric pick-up the cyber truck to next year. electric reports it says on tesla's website, you will get to customize your truck when production, quote, nears in 2022. earlier this year ceo elon musk said there would be a few cyber trucks delivered this year, but during a live conference call he said not likely. the delay could pose a competitive challenge as gm's

hummer ev is set to be at the -- beat out cyber truck to the market and ford's f-150 lightning is still on track for next spring. meantime get used to eating off trays inside mcdonald's again. "the wall street journal" reports the fast food giant is facing tight supplies of some paper to go bags, to go orders accounted for 81% of all restaurant business in the year ending in june, that's up 18% from the previous year. at mcdonald's many customers are asking for their food in bags even when they dine inside. now mcdonald's says the impact from the tighter supplies should be minimal and customers should see no disruption. well, marcus and laura, one more place you bring your bag with you. >> i guess you could. >> tray. put the french fries right here. >> okay. >> don't need a bag for my fries. >> usually keep one in my purse. >> resourceful. >> thanks, bertha.

so our air quality is moderate tout and for the north bay and the bay and the coast as well as the east bay, down the santa clara valley we are above the threshold of 50 where we are looking at how much particulate matter and smoke is in the air. it will be locally unhealthy at times. if the kids are heading out to the park in concord, parts of the east bay as we start out the morning, temperatures are nice and comfortable but you'll notice that even with the sunshine, it won't be all clear once again because of that smoke and the hazy look to the sky. our temperatures reaching into the mid 80s by early in the afternoon headed towards 92 today. it's going to be a little bit hotter than it was yesterday. san raphael looking at a high of 83 degrees and 66 in san francisco, palo alto up to 79 degrees and 82 in san jose. so ahead, as we head towards the middle to the end of the week, we'll be watching warmer temperatures as well as a chance that we could see some thunder and lightning over parts of the sierra. there could be more of the monsoon moisture coming in

firing up some of those thunderstorms for the upcoming weekend. head's up about that if you will be traveling there as we're going to have warmer temperatures here. upper 80s for our warmest spots today and then going toward the end of the week, it just get as little bit warmer each day. heading up to 95 on friday and still in the 90s for the weekend. san francisco in the mid 60s and a little bit warmer for thursday and friday. by saturday and sunday we come down a few degrees as we get more of the clouds and fog. mike, you're watching san francisco. >> i am. because that's where the activity is, what little activity we have. a smooth, easy drive for most of the bay. south county into the silicon valley, peninsula also and even the tri-valley we saw a blip for 84, just a crew getting in place or out of place as they clear from 84. we'll track that. here we still have the report of a disabled vehicle west 80 off of the bridge around freemont and no slowing and no problems, but it's been there for quite some time. we're going to track that and

nudge chp to see if they have updates. the closure of van ness at mission been going on since last week not scheduled to clear until 6:00 a.m. crews typically clean up about now and start to move around. be advised that may be the case. no problems getting into the bay bridge. no problems getting in through the north bay. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >> happening now, devastation unfolding in greece. this is where there is a wildfire emergency under way right now with no sign of relief. there have been more than 100 fires in 24 hours across the country. three major ones with several of those villages now being evacuated. the biggest fire is on greece's second largest island, the tourist destination. the fire started after the longest heat wave the country has seen in three decades. the temperatures there could climb today to 111 degrees in some parts. one greek minister says quoting, we no longer are talking about climate change but about a

climate threat. canada's border reopened to fully vaccinated americans. this is what border looked like overnight, first time in over a year that people are able to cross the border for nonessential travel. canadian government will be enforcing a strict list of requirements that include being a fully vaccinated u.s. citizen or permanent resident carrying proof of vaccination, having a valid prearrival covid-19 test before crossing the border and registering and submitting all mandatory information on a new website called arrival can. norwegian requested to block a law banning cruise companies from asking passengers for proof of a coronavirus vaccination before they board the ship. this stems from a lawsuit challenging the state's passport ban. norwegian says vaccine proof is needed to safely resume its cruises. new details of the walls caving in now for new york governor andrew cuomo. a committee will discuss whether there are grounds to impeach the

governor as one of his top aides is resigning. melissa derosa announcing her decision saying the past two years have been emotionally and mentally trying. she was one of cuomo's top supporters. her departure after a report by the attorney general alleged the governor sexually harassed 11 women. derosa name comes up 187 times in the report. cuomo, who has not been charged with any crime, denies any wrongdoing and refuses to step down. r. kelly's new york trial will begin today two years after the trial was delayed in february due to issues related to the covid-19 pandemic. the disgraced singer is charged with racketeering, sexual exploitation of a child, kidnapping, bribery and forced labor. jury selection will start this morning. opening statements are expected next week. we've come to the end of an unprecedented olympic games in

trending this morning, a bear caught grocery shopping in southern california. i want you to take a look at these photos here. the residents of porter ranch got a surprise saturday morning when they saw this 120 -- look at this big fella, 125 pound male bear walking through the aisles of rafls ralph's. police say there were three bear sightings in the area. it was chased outside near the back of a walmart building where officers waited for the u.s. fish and wildlife service. once they arrived the bear was shot with a tranquilizer and
