and on nbcbayarea.com. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get to traffic in a bit, but back to school for san ramon unified in san jose as well. you know what it's going to be a hot one in the inland areas. >> san ramon is going to feel that today as the kids get ready to head out. we're starting out with a live look in dublin and temperatures in the upper 50s, the early hours, definitely the time to get out there and enjoy those outdoor activities. as we go into late morning into the afternoon it heat up. take a look at these high temperatures, 96 in livermore and concord. we'll see mid 80s for napa and san jose and mid 70s for oakland, san francisco headed towards 71 degrees. we are going to have hotter temperatures in the forecast. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike, do you have any good news for the north bay commuters? >> i do. highway 37 was closed. now we've been alternating closures, westbound, your commute direction was closed overnight but it reopened a few

minutes ago, scheduled at 4:00 a.m. the island off ramp may be closed. starting at 10:00, a closure for the east bay direction from 121 toward vallejo. 29, that's your alternate like last week. tomorrow that will last until 6:00 a.m. because that's counter commute to hold on to that longer for the morning commute. 84 typical closure there as well. coming up, back to you. san francisco employee vaccination mandate is generating controversy and the pushback is really growing. this morning, nearly 200 city workers say they won't get the vaccine unless their demands are the met, including proving that vaccine won't give them covid-19. >> as "today in the bay's" jean elle reports, many are first responders. >> i think we're already at a disadvantage with all the toxins we're exposed to in fires.

there's a huge cancer number among firefighters. >> reporter: a san francisco firefighter who wants to remain anonymous, says he will not get the covid-19 vaccine and believes the cities's mandate requirresources department says it reived this conditional acceptance letter from nearly 200 employees demanding the city prove 41 items including the vaccine won't give them covid and city leaders aren't practicing medicine without a license. human resources says 103 of the letters came from employees at the fire department. in a statement, human resources says we will continue our robust outreach to every employee to ensure that they know that infections and deaths from covid-19 are preventable and that vaccines are readily available, safe, effective, and the only way to end the pandemic. union leaders for the sheriff's department say they have over

150 members prepared to leave because of the mandate. some firefighters are expected to join them. >> there's been no talk of any compromise that you do this or you're gone. that's very unfortunate. and it saddens me to leave the job but i will. >> reporter: we reached out but did not hear back. in san francisco, jean elle, nbc bay area news. contra costa county supervisors will debate an 18 month temporary road closure of south broadway avenue. this would be between the city limits of pittsburgh and extending north to maynard street. good samaritan is still recovering this morning. this is after coming to the aid of two people in oakland's chinatown. >> the asian community is

demanding more protection. cheryl hurd sat down and talked to the police chief about crime surging in oakland. >> everything ath always changed when the gun was pulled out. >> reporter: mr. li walked us through what happened on saturday when he intervened during a robbery attempt in oakland's chinatown. >> the guy was bringing the gun up to the girl's head. her boyfriend took action and charged the guy you know, moving the gun away from her head. >> reporter: that's when mr. li says he jumped in. >> that's when the gun was discharged. >> hitting him in his left shoulder and right thigh barely missing the main artery. >> the trigger could be pulled at any moment so that was a tense situation. >> reporter: luckily he is here to tell his story, a story police chief armstrong has heard too many times in the city of

oakland. >> it saddens me we continue to see videos of community members in our community being victimized. >> reporter: it's dangerous when people put their lives on the line to help others and he sat down with us exclusively one day after his six-month anniversary on the job. >> we've done a lot of positive things and i think by creating new positions like community liaison officer to chinatown, a community liaison officer to the fruitvale violence crime operation center. >> reporter: he says crime is a big problem in the asian community and many other parts of oakland as well. and officers are leaving at an alarming rate. >> what concerns me the most is we continue to see hundreds of calls in the city of oakland that go unanswered. >> reporter: the other huge challenge, violent crime. two people were killed this past weekend. add that to these disturbing t numbers taken from an 8-month

period show a rapid rise in killings, 49 in 2019 from january to august to 78 the same time this year. >> new covid guidelines around keeping people in cuszero bail, getting arrested for firearm charges and released with zero bail, that is no incentive to not carry a gun. >> reporter: some say he doesn't have the support of the rank and file. >> as the chief it's my job to continue to try to increase morale and ensure that people know that i appreciate them. >> reporter: meanwhile, mr. li says he appreciates and sees more officers presence in the asian community and he wants more. >> these attacks are getting much more audacious and aggressive. yeah, i'm hoping that, you know, they will do something about it. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." developing in miami hundreds of residents forced to evacuate after their condo building was

deemed unsafe by the city. it's located near the airport. city officials posted this notice on the building forcing residents last night to scramble. thecondo has 137 units. city officials are helping to relocate the residents six weeks after the deadly surfside collapse that claimed the lives of 98 people. the cause remains under investigation. south bay water customers get an update today on the efforts to battle the ongoing drought. valley water directors will give an update on the response and current water supply. that meeting starts at 1:00 p.m. as of today, a popular lake berryessa boat launch is closing. the launch will not be available until further notice. people will still be allowed to launch canoes and kayaks and other launch points are open. if you plan to go check the website aheadore when we talk

about the weather that we have and the conditions right now. >> so dry out there and then we've seen the water levels continue to drop around the bay area and our reservoirs as well as a lot of those hiking spots that you may be headed out to today. it's going to be hot. take a look at these temperatures reaching into the mid 90s today. this is a look at the forecast up around clearlake. this is farther to the north in some of the hills and it's going to be definitely too hot for an afternoon hike, so get out there early as we'll see our temperatures heating up quickly. around the bay area take a look at the highs reaching into the low 70s in san francisco, mid 70s for oakland, martinez reaching 89 degrees and mid 90s and the temperatures will continue to crank up for our inland valleys. they're going to feel that in livermore. you have a note for people driving out of livermore. >> closure for highway 84 through miles canyon, moving around and getting different sections over the last few weeks and looking at 680 and mission

oakland moving smoothly. never at a loss for cars. that's the nimitz freeway. let's check in with our friend bertha. >> thank you very much, mike. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. wall street looks to open flat after the dow and s&p 500 pulled back from record highs yesterday on concerns about the resurgence in covid cases. energy stocks really led the decline as oil prices dropped 4% amid fears covid cases could lead to a global slow down. recovery related stocks like norwegian cruise line and united airlines were down. this morning we're going to be watching for a report on worker productivity and labor costs, both of which have been rising. meantime amazon is going to be paying customers who suffer injuries or property damage from defective goods that others sell on its website in a new policy they hope will reduce lawsuits.

for years consumers have sued amazon claiming it's liable when a merchant sells a bad product on the site. amazon maintains the sellers are the ones responsible and most courts have sided with the retail giant, but starting september 1st in an effort to try to pair down these lawsuits they're going to pay valid claims up to $1,000 which make up more than 80% of the injury and damage cases. it may also step in with more help if sellers don't respond to claims. instagram is now testing ads in the shop tab. the social media site tells tech crunch the ads will involve a single image or carousel and users will click and shop for the items shown. only certain advertisers will have access, but there are plans to expand the product in the future. the initial partners will include rihanna's beauty and clear paint. instagram rolled out ads in

here we go, tuesday morning as we take a live look at richmond this morning. a few cars on the road getting started with the day. we're already up and ready to move you forward. >> we're up and not ready. we're getting ready. i am. >> kind of like that double dutch we were talking about. >> here we go. here we go. >> all right. a lot of kids going back to school. they've got to be ready.

>> they have to be ready. still sleeping now. let them sleep a little bit longer. >> right. >> and then it will be go time for the first day of school. let's talk about what's going on in weather. it's going to be hotter for our inland areas. they'll feel it near the coast. a live look outside in san jose, you're waking up and heading out to temperatures in the low 60s right now, and it's going to be nice throughout the morning hours, mainly clear and then heating up quickly once we get to late morning into the afternoon. take a look at these highs reaching up to 85 today in san jose and 92 in morgan hill, milpitas reaching 85 degrees. we'll see some mid 90s for walnut creek, antioch reaching 98 degrees, oakland today second day of school headed towards 74 degrees and we'll see some upper 70s in san mateo, palo alto reaching 82 and for downtown san francisco, little bit warmer, 71 degrees. it continues to heat up farther to the north in ukiah reaching

102, and 90 in napa today, a high of 86. we've got a lot going on, i know, we've had a lot of fires but let's turn our attention to the tropics where we can see there is a tropical system kevin that is just to the west of baja, california, and this is possibly something that could affect our weather heading towards the end of the week. we're going to get a surge of some monsoonal moisture and kevin may get drawn into that monsoonal moisture and bring a chance of some thunderstorms. best chance over the sierra, but we may also feel that humidity and there may be the chance that we could see some dry lightning once again. something we're concerned about into the weekend with the increasing humidity and temperatures it's going to feel very hot. then going into the weekend, also the potential that dry lightning may spark some new fires and we're watching out for that chance once again mainly over the sierra and here we're going to see our temperatures making it into the low 70s in

san francisco, but some mid to upper 90s in the inland valleys. mike, you've been watching the roads. >> calm as we expected, 4:51 right now, almost 4:52. light drive peninsula along the coast, south bay, showing up, a smooth flow of traffic. i believe they cleared highway 84 which is great news, nothing unexpected there. a little slowing again nothing unexpected out of the altamont pass and off the merge with 205. vasco road just fine. byron, brentwood, discovery bay, towards 580 the main commute through the area. smooth drive through contra costa county as you're coming out of antioch and over towards richmond. no problem for the east shore freeway, no backups and no delays for the richmond bay bridge westbound. back to you. >> live look at sfo, this mornings the cdc is adding seven places on its highest risk category for travel due to covid-19. the agency says people should avoid traveling to these destinations because of a rising number of cases.

the warning includes aruba, france, iceland, israel, and thailand. these nations have had more than 500 covid cases per 100,000 people in the past four weeks. the cdc also recommends against all international travel until you're fully vaccinate actress t revealed she has been diagnosed with multiple scler rosie. the actress tweeted out a few months ago i was diagnosed with ms. it's been a strange journey but i have been supportive by people i know who has this condition. it's been a tough road but as we all know the road keeps going. the multiple sclerosis causes the immune system to eat away at nerves. she battled breast cancer a couple years ago. how about getting an emotional police escort for your first day back to school. >> i like that. >> thank you.
