7:04 am
but first, kerry sanders is in naples, florida, with the latest good morning >> reporter: good morning. i'm here in napersville. yes, today is the first day of school seven states, including florida, have banned mask mandates. so school administrators here won't know until the end of the day how many of the 47,000 students that are going to school here, how many parents decided to keep their kids back because there is no mask requirement. all of this coming as health officials say nationwide fewer than half of all kids between the ages of 12 and 18 are vaccinated which puts those children in the cross hairs of this crisis this morning with cases rising in every state, the u.s. is seeing the highest number of infections since february. hospitals in many southern states pushed to the brink >> we're at an emergency situation here, no doubt about it >> arkansas's governor regretting his previous ban on

masks. >> it was an error to sign that law. i admit that >> the pentagon now mandating vaccinations for nearly 2 million service members by mid-september. and with major school districts opening soon across the country, there's growing concern about keeping kids safe. last week, there were nearly 94,000 new infections in children an increase of nearly 80% in a month. hospital rates among kids have tri tripled. but the debate over masks in schools is only intensifying >> let the parents make the decisions. let the kids breathe >> reporter: in florida, governor ron desantis is banning districts from requiring masks, even threatening to cut the salary of any superintendent who defies him in a terse letter, florida's chapter of the american academy of pediatrics called his rhetoric dangerous and pushed for universal masking in schools. fifth grade teacher alyssa tate says none of her student complained about wearing masks last year. >> we want our students to feel

n95 masks, of course, are the most effective these masks, the ones that we've gotten from, like, hospitals, they're about 40% effective. and the cloth masks, well, they're the least effective, about 20% protection but they point out, even this is better than nothing. savannah >> kerry, thank you. joining us now, dr. richard besser, former acting director of the cdc, now president of the robert wood johnson foundation as well as a practicing pediatrician dr. besser, it's good to see you as always. >> good morning, savannah. it's nice to be here >> let's talk about the explosive growth in the number of kids infected with covid. a four-fold increase since the start of last month, july, and a 20% week over week increase in kids being hospitalized. what do you attribute that to? is there any evidence that the delta variant is more dangerous, more virulent with kids? >> i haven't seen convincing evidence that it's more severe i think the jury is out on that.
7:08 am
but just the fact that so many more children are being infected with this strain means that there will be more children who have severe disease. there will be more children who are hospitalized and, unfortunately, there will be more children who die from covid. and that is not something we should allow to happen >> once again, this issue of masks is being very hotly debated, especially as kids are returning to the classroom we've got some governors banning mask mandates. now we have school districts overruling them. but the governor's position is let parents choose, let parents exercise personal responsibility so let's follow that logic from a public health perspective. if you go to a school and some kids are wearing masks and some aren't, what happens >> well, it increases the risk for everyone you know, what schools are using this year to get children into classrooms safely is a layered approach they're improving ventilation, some are doing testing, they're separating desks and they're having people wear masks.
7:09 am
and if you ease up on any of those, it provides more of an opportunity for covid to spread. i think this fall is going to be really challenging for schools i think children belong in the classroom. but what we're going to see is little outbreaks, clusters in different schools, schools shutting down, reopening the more we can do to reduce the number of times that happens, the better and wearing masks for everyone will help to accomplish that >> i was going to ask you that because if there is an outbreak at school because, you know, some kids are wearing masks, some aren't, there's the potential that the school then shuts down >> yeah. so last year, we did an approach called cohorting where you try to keep each class together. and i think schools will do that, as well. but when you have a strain that is this contagious, i expect it's going to jump around different classrooms and schools will be forced to shut down more than they did back last year so all the steps we can take right now, the biggest one is if you're a parent and you care about your child's health, get
