sobering new numbers in the dixie wildfire which has already become the state's largest fire ever. about half of the believed to b. firefighters say this morning 30% of that fire is contained. about 14,000 homes are still threatened. >> taking a live look outside of the san francisco bay, we are expecting smoke from the dixie fire to make its way here. an air quality advisory has been issued. how is it looking so far? >> looks good this morning. we have a new fire burning not too far from the dixie fire, the glenn fire that started yesterday so we may see a little more of the smoke coming in. moderate air quality. there's an air quality advisory just below a spare the air alert, and as we look at our

near-surface computer model, we could see shades of blue and the worst air quality in parts of the north bay, but quite a few large fires burning to the north and it's going to be settling into some of our valleys as well as the north bay. we'll talk more about it in a couple minutes. 101 at capitol expressway, crash on the shoulder southbound 101. no injuries or slowing there. and we're looking at the altamont with typical slowing, and 84 with a closure and i will explain that coming up. most folks are familiar with it. nbc news learned the fda could approve a booster shot for the moderna and pfizer vaccines as early as today. >> but there's a catch. what we know about who will and

won't qualify for the third shot. >> booster shots are about to get the green light but only for people who they define as immuno compromised. >> that transplant, heart transplants, and people on heavy duty chemotherapy. >> she has been already fielding questions about the booster shot. she already knows people on the hunt for a booster. the expected fda approval would make it easier for those at greatest risk to get it. >> some of them are just doing it on their own by going to a different site that doesn't know of them and getting another dose. >> there are strict rules doctors have to follow regarding

its loose. it's likely the groups approved for the first dose, there are groups that say the approval needs to be widened to include seniors and the disabled. >> my guess is it will be restricted to patients with known imuno compromised. >> he said doctors will have much broader authority on dosage and use, and the fda will be making an announcement by thursday, and a cdc panel will fine off on a final approval and recommended use. california's latest covid case numbers shows just how much less at risk you are if you are fully vaccinated. here's the average case rates this week. for the unvaccinated, it's 51 per 100,000.

for fully vaccinated it's a little over 8 per 100,000. that's 6 1/2 times more cases for those unvaccinated. and then in the east bay contra costa health services has an incentive program that will give somebody $100 for every person they convince to be vaccinated. in san francisco the department of public health is using a campaign that will create a series showing how the vaccine works. supporters needed more than 51,000 verified signatures but came up short. supporters thought they had enough only to discover many were fake. this is one of two efforts to recall beau dean.

he argues that he is reforming the criminal justice system and described the recalls as politically motivated. one of the largest school districts is revisiting reapproving the memorandum with the understanding of the city allowing the district to hire off-duty san jose police officers as private security guards. in june the board voted to end the in-school officers program. the meeting begins at 6:00 and is open for public comment. a big chunk of the bay not reaching the mandate goals. the association of bay area government says four counties and 23 cities and towns filed appeals to try and lower their

goals. that includes santa clara, contra costa, marin and sonoma counties. more than one quarter of the bay area is included among the cities and counties filing the appeals. time to look at the forecast on little friday, as we call it. >> it's going to be hot for the inland areas and cool near the coast, and watching rain not too far from the bay area. let's look at the green creeping up the coast. it will stay off the coast, but it will start a lot more muggy out there as we are getting a surge of monsoon moisture coming in. we are starting out at 69 degrees already in brentwood this morning, and it's in the upper 60s for san francisco, and mid-60s for the south bay, and 65 as you head out the door in concord. no need for a jacket, and it's going to be hot this afternoon. reaching back in the upper 80s and low 90s, antioch heading to

good morning, san jose. taking a live look in downtown san jose this morning as we get started with this thursday morning. >> pretty, isn't it? >> great. beautiful sight. the question is -- >> what? >> are you thinking what it is temperature wise? >> yeah. >> you guys -- >> stop looking at my paper! >> let's get a look at all the humidity we are feeling and the source of it because we are seeing a lot of changes here as we are seeing rain close to the bay area. take a look at the radar. now it's not for the most part not going to move in, and we will see it move to the north and across parts of the central coast and staying off of our coast for the morning, but with it that close by it's creating clouds and kind of blocking our view of the meteor shower this

morning so you are having to compete with the passing clouds to get a look at the meteors passing by. we made it past the peak of what we could see, not up to 100 meteors an hour, and there's a chance you could see a little something going on if the meteor shower continues, and the best chance is tomorrow at 3:00 a.m. it's going to be reaching in the upper 80s in napa and mid-80s for martinez. antioch, instead of 100 degrees how about 92? still hot. morgan hill reaching 94 there, and 86 in san jose. palo alto up to 81 degrees. so we're still tracking the two tropical systems out there in the pacific. kevin continues to weaken and is now a tropical depression. linda is still a tropical storm but we have been watching this

because it could be drawn into all of the moisture we are seeing over the next couple of days enhancing the chance there could be showers over the sierra and look at what could be off the coast and maybe move into the coastal areas by tomorrow night we will be watching the showers because they are going to possibly increase the humidity and bringing in lightning as well. livermore, over the next several days, once again the heat continues and it will cool down gradually in the upper 80s. our temperatures still yo-yoing up and down into the upper 90s, low 90s, and for san francisco, we're steady here, no yo-yos but highs in the upper 60s. mike, how is it looking in san jose? >> i will take the no yo-yo comment and apply that to me as well.

this stretch right appeared the 680 and 280 interchange, and it's smooth here at 101, and there was a crash near center on capital expressway, and so far no closures but there's a lot of activity. keep that in mind as you travel over to the area to or from highway 101. peninsula, no problem. cooler toward the coast. an easy drive all over the place. now there's a new incident over in richmond, and no slowing shows up there or at the toll plaza. back to you. >> new this morning. scary moments for a driver in the central valley after a man hurled a hammer at the car during a road rage incident. it happened last month in king county. the driver of a jeep began honking. look at that. this is what happened. the driver was honking at the victim as he was trying to merge on the 5, and the victim took

the nearest effort to try and avoid the confrontation, but then the jeep blocked the roadway and a person inside of it threw a hammer at the windshield before driving off, and that driver was arrested for several felonies. developing for you right now a santa barbara man is suspected of murdering his two young children. >> matthew taylor coleman was arrested, and investigators reported the police found the bodies of the children 18 miles from the hotel. coleman stated qanon and other conspiracies in his confession, and he said it was the only action that would save the world. coleman and his wife run a popular surf school. neighbors say the family seemed normal and happy. >> it's actually shocking to

hear. i had no idea that there were any issues. a new health evaluation is in the works, jose garcia is still in federal custody on charges tied to the shooting. he has been unwilling follow legal advice to plead not guilty. pier 14 shooting became a flash point in the immigration debate. he had been deported five times to his native mexico and was awaiting another deportation. in court he claims he had no idea that he was holding a gun that he said he found was wrapped in a t-shirt under a bench. and then a state supreme court declined to consider

reducing or powers. two assemblymen petitioned for the court to review that, and the court concluded the governor is acting within his authority. oakland losing another team before hitting the field, and the oakland panthers held tryouts to start playing in the indoor football league in 2020, and then, of course, the pandemic hit. the panther's season also got wiped out. now say hello to the bay area panthers. the last time san jose had an indoor team was in 2015 when the sabre cats -- remember them -- after they folded after 20 years. yep. a family treasured heirloom returning after 30 years. >> we're going to tell you what it was, how it was lost and how it was returned three decades

family heirloom back in the hands of a new zealand woman after being stolen 30 years ago. >> it was her mother-in-law's ring and it was handed down to her, and she never stopped looking for it. >> police in new zealand say her home was burglarized 30 years ago and the suspect took off with the family ring, and she was recently browsing online for her sister's 70th birthday and she saw the ring she lost, and contacted police and they brought the ring back to her. >> a lot of my mom's stuff was stolen. maybe she could look online. lots of miracles out there. coming up next here, air quality concerns here at home as the dixie fire continues to burn up north. kari is tracking those conditions. >> yeah, temperatures heating up, especially in gilroy reaching 92. still oakland in the mid-70s and santa rosa reaching 83. a look at all our microclimates and the air quality coming up
