"early today" starts right now good morning, i'm phillip mena >> glad you could join us. i'm frances rivera breaking news. it is official, the fda has authorized a third covid vaccine for some vulnerable americans. late last night the agency okayed the additional doses as part of the emergency use authorizations for the moderna and pfizer vaccines. jay gray, tell us more about what this decision means >> reporter: what it means, frances, is there's one more step before people actually get shots in arms and that's the cdc. some of those who need this booster dose the most could get

it by this weekend who is that? well, it's about 3% of americans who are highly immunodeficient we're talking about cancer patients, transplant recipients, people who are struggling with their immune system right now. and doctors say it's vital that their first round of doses of this vaccine didn't really do a lot to boost their immune system, so they need more. and that's why they will get the third shot here. doctors also saying that while this is limited right now very much in scope that if the variant, delta variant, continues to spread, we may see the rest of us getting a booster shot before it's all said and done a lot of that obviously contingent on how many people get their first dose we now know as many as 93 million americans haven't had a single dose of vaccine against the coronavirus. >> yeah, in talking about that third j while the others are refusing to even get that first. nbc's lester holt spoke with

dr. anthony fauci about those booster shots. >> the immunocompromised people never had an adequate response to begin with. when you're talking about the classic concept of a booster for everyone else, you're talking about the durability of what you assumed was a good response. so they really are two different categories and two different concepts >> right now you still don't see a need for a booster for those who had the original response? >> at this point right now we are not having boosters for those individuals. but one thing people need to understand, we're following this extremely carefully. we will immediately be prepared, and we are prepared right now, to implement the booster program very quickly >> i'm going to ask you to put into perspective what we're seeing right now with this explosion of new cases around the country. doctor, if we don't get this under control in some way, do we risk the possibility of the

vaccines becoming ineffective? in other words, taking us back to square one? >> that is a real possibility, lester we don't want to frighten the public, but we want to make sure they understand that we have 93 million people in this country who are eligible to be vaccinated who are not vaccinated if you allow the virus to freely essentially roam through the vulnerable population and infect people, you give it ample opportunity to mutate, which means a person who's unvaccinated is not only putting themselves at risk and their family, but really are putting the community at risk. >> are either history or president on our side in terms of how all this ends, how this virus ends >> there is history and precedent on our side. if you look back at the history of devastating diseases and epidemics, smallpox, polio,
