vaccination cards ready. >> san francisco cracking down, the new restrictions if you're unvaccinated. and when they start. also, the haze isn't going anywhere just yet. here's a live look outside this. this is "today in the bay." this is friday morning. 6:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. first we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall with a look at our weekend forecast ahead. >> we're still monitoring the air quality as you make plans to get outside and we're starting out with a live look outside in dublin before you head out the core. we've seen the hazy conditions and moderate air quality. if you're sensitive to the wildfire smoke you may need to limit your time outside and wear an n-95 mask and in the north bay where we will see the most unhealthy air quality. these numbers measure the particulate matter and how unhealthy it is.
6:01 am
once you get above 50 we're going from good to moderate. seeing some of the worst in the north bay today and still looking a little hazy. we'll talk about temperatures that's coming up in the forecast in a few minutes. >> looking forward to that. thank you. nbc bay area is your back-to-school station and this morning a large school district in the bay area is reporting its first case of covid just days after returning to in-person instruction. "today in the bay's" bob redell live for us in san ramon sifting through the numbers this morning. bob, talk about what you've learned. >> well good morning to you, marcus. san ramon valley unified as you mentioned just returned to in-person instruction this past tuesday, is now reporting seven cases of covid among its schools. one of those cases taking place behind me here at california high school in san ramon. take a look at your tv screen, two more cases at san ramon valley high school. one at los cerrso and three at vista grand. find the information on-line at

the covid dash board. it's not clear if the seven cases are among the staff or 30,000 students who attend the schools in this district. regardless statistically speaking, seven cases among 30,000 students and hundreds of staff is low. those who have been infected will be required to stay home for ten days and can return after not showing symptoms after that time period. what about the others who have been exposed to one of these cases. if those people are vaccinated and asymptomatic, they will not have to quarantine. as kris sanchez reported, teachers and students who have been exposed but haven't received shots will have to do a modified quarantine for ten days. this is at any school here in the state of california. so those people in the modified quarantine can continue in-person instruction in the same classroom if they are asymptomatic. they must continue to mask and submit to at least two covid tests per week during the ten-day time period. students also must abstain from

extra curricular activities like sports and other activities. if they develop symptoms during that time, or any time for that matter they would have to isolate at home. reporting live here in san ramon, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. 6:02 right now. happening today, parents can expect to learn more about the reopening of schools during the pandemic. at 10:30 the state superintendent will hold a conference on the importance of getting a vaccine. then the san francisco superintendent will hold an event on what parents and students can expect as kids return to. >> 90% of u.s. coins are experiencing high transmission rates. florida and texas accounting for 40% of new hospitalizations nationwide. flor has seen more n service inside. san francisco city leaders announced that new mandate to

6:05 am
>> yeah. we've seen a lot of our bay area public health officers kind of ban together and go with the same guidelines. we're seeing san francisco go first but we could end up seeing some of those restrictions beyond san francisco and around the bay area. you're going to want to have your vaccine card when you travel and be on the safe side as well leaving the bay area. you can carry your paper card that you got wherever you got your shots. a photo will also do the trick. i got mine at levi stadium and have a photo in my picture roll, my camera roll. digital one with the qr code might be more convenient. you can get that one through the california public health department site. if you are trying to verify someone's vaccination you will need more than the qr code reader on your phone because there are privacy measures built in. you need the smart health verifier. it is free. and the download is pretty quick. once you have that app this is what it looks like. you hit that scan vaccination
6:06 am
record box, place it over the vaccine qr code i did at my desk and it shows green for verified, along with the name of the person you're checking, what vaccine they got, when they got it where they got it, this will make it pretty straightforward even for small businesses to verify that vaccine proof because you don't have to buy anything, you can just download the app. >> right. >> you asked if this is going to work when you take your buddy trip to new orleans. and i had to check. according to the big travel guide, experts in this, this is what they say, they say for now, the digital copy of your vaccine record with the qr code is issued state by state. california, new york, and 300 other entities are using the same smart health cards we showed you but they're not universal yet. >> okay. >> some airlines are using travel pass and veri fly. if you're spending money on a
