right now at 4:30, wildfires raging across the state. more than a million acres burned in california and we're learning the cause of a fire that left nothing but rubble at a mobile home park north of the bay area. >> we've issued a microclimate weather alert. the bad air sticking around the bay this morning, but things may be changing soon. the updated timeline and when the smoke will move out of the way. >> hopefully making waves for our weekend. we're on the cusp this friday morning. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez. we have team coverage for you this morning starting with

vianey arana tracking these unhealthy conditions and as laura said, we're hoping we'll get some bit of the weekend. >> we had an air quality advisory yesterday that got upgraded because of the spare the aair alert because of the drifting smoke. let's get started with our surface smoke model because this gives you an idea of where that smoke might settle in through the afternoon. notice this is around 11:00 and you can see some of those orange and yellow hues starting to settle in scotts valley, the south bay san jose area. what's going to help us out this weekend we'll get an increase in an onshore flow. notice we see some of that orange start to get pushed further inland, more of the blue in the picture, and that's going to help push out some of that smoke hopefully providing some much needed relief into saturday night. full forecast in a few minutes. >> we're waking up to the thick blanket of haze lingering over

the bay area. the air quality remains a concern. >> cheryl hurd is in walnut creek one of the big trouble spots in terms of air quality. >> reporter: the orange moon is an eerie reminder that -- >> air quality is pretty bad. >> reporter: and that's coming from someone visiting from arizona. >> and my eyes have been so scratchy and just really irritated and i couldn't figure out why until i looked out and the sky is all gloomy and -- >> reporter: smoke has been pouring in from wildfires in the north, triggering a spare the air alert for the rest of the week across the bay area. >> i live in california because i'm here for the weather, the weather. i'm willing to pay the price for the weather. not the smog. >> reporter: or the smoke. >> the number one way to stay safe is to stay indoors. >> reporter: kaiser

pulmonologist tom daily says the smoke we are all breathing in is not good for us at all. >> if you are outdoors, you must wear an n-95 mask, a cloth mask, a paper mask, and we have all been using to protect ourselves from covid will not protect you from these tiny particulate matter from the wood smoke. >> reporter: outside activities should be limited. on wednesday, football practice at liberty union high school in brentwood was taken indoors. >> when i was at school, it was like hard for me to breathe a little bit with the smoke. >> we did walk through for the game tomorrow. we're ready for san ramon valley. >> players were allowed to practice outside. >> kids messaging me it's smoky outside. we're going to listen to the district, follow the policies. >> reporter: when the bay area quality index topped 200, schools are instructed to cancel, move or reschedule all outdoor activities.

air quality in the bay area has been in the unhealthy level and people are tired of it. >> i'm hoping this doesn't last any longer. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." well, we've been watching the fires to see if it's going to last any longer. developing, new milestone to tell you about in the dixie wildfire burning in plumas and lassen counties. the flames have burned 700,000 acres. firefighters are making some progress on containment compared to this time yesterday. it's now 35% contained. more than 1200 homes and buildings however have been destroyed. a federal judge has ordered the pg&e worker who found damaged power equipment near the start of the fire to appear in court next month for questioning. take a look here, more than a dozen fires we've been talking about, look at that, burning across our region and most of them right where we are in northern california. east of sacramento, firefighters still working to get a kind of containment on the caldor fire

burning in el dorado county. it's burned 70,000 acres since it started six days ago. at least 100 homes and buildings destroyed. thousand additional ones remained threatened. for the fire burning closest to the bay area, the cause of this week's cache fire in lake county. flames tore through one neighborhood near clearlake on wednesday destroying more than three dozen mobile homes and burning about 75 acres. the fire chief now says that fire started as an oven fire. some evacuation orders are still in place. it is now 40% contained. stay with us with the latest on those fires and all of the smoke to track the air quality where you live, go to nbcbayarea.com, click on the link in the trending bar at the top and enter your address on the map to check conditions where you live. a live look in san francisco this morning where if you are looking to go out in the city make sure you bring your proof of vaccination. that new vaccine mandate begins today. either you need your card as we have been reporting, photo of

it, maybe the state's qr code to get into restaurants, bars, even gyms this time around. some feel safer inside knowing that everyone is vaccinated. >> others criticizing the mandate saying it will be harder. health leaders hope the new rule will keep the workforce and customers healthy as well. cierra johnson will be reporting live from san francisco in less than half an hour on all of that. marin county is holding a special covid vaccine clinic tomorrow. third doses will be offered to anyone who is immunocompromised. this is happening at the marin center exhibit hall in san raphael. appointments are not necessary but encouraged. cal osha standards board, according to the chronicle the changes would happen in december at the earliest. this week they're meeting to talk about revisions. rules allow fully vaccinated people to not wear masks in the workplace. not so for the unvaccinated.

workers who say they're vaccinated do not have to show proof. there are no distancing or capacity restrictions in place. cal osha rules are separate than those required by state or local health departments. so the red hot housing market perhaps losing some of its sizzle for home buyers hoping to make it in the bay. that's what the numbers show from the association of realtors. the median home price is $1.3 million. it dropped slightly from june down a little bit more than 3%. still, year over year the median is up 24%. also, cooling down if we can call it that, the number of sales which were down slightly compared to the same time one year ago. in an effort to boost air travel during the pandemic, american airlines bringing back its nonstop flights from san jose to chicago. the airlines will offer four flights a week from min net to o'hare from tuesday to friday and leave san jose about 1:00 in

asia where markets slumped after china passed a data privacy law and part of it is part of this ongoing crackdown on tech companies. apple is reportedly delaying its return to office plans until at least january due to the surge in covid cases. in an internal memo the company will give employees a month's notice before they have to come back. in june ceo tim cook said apple will test a hybrid model with people working in the office three days a week in september but that date was moved to october and now the new year. elon musk showcased tesla's artificial intelligence technology at the a.i. day yesterday giving a preview of the tesla bot, 5'8" robot with a screen for a face weighing about 125 pounds and moving about five miles per hour. musk says a proto keep is expected next year and building a humanoids robot is the next logical step since tesla is a

it's nice and clearish in this picture. you can see it. we've had all that smoke that's been lingering and hovering over so much of the bay area. the shift in the winds will be where it's going to go. >> here's to hoping. >> the moon. >> really orange. >> reminiscent of last year and september. >> we haven't seen it that long and hopefully we won't see it for that long. >> what i like to tell people just to sort of give them an idea of how this is still constantly changing this can change depending on how the fire acts. >> right. >> the winds as you mentioned or if a new fire starts. even if the winds begin to die down because there's so much dry brush out there, we've seen how quickly fires can start and spread. you know, we're hoping for this push from the onshore flow to help clear out some of the smoke and i'm going to go through this for you in a second. live look right now in san francisco, now the cameras are dark right now because the sun is not up, but we are expecting another hazy day in walnut creek right now, i was using the camera yesterday because you can

see that orange glow. early on in the morning. let's get to your forecast. what can we expect in terms of that air quality. well this is the air quality right now. you can see the sensors are picking up for the most part moderate air quality, this is some of the fog that's moving in to the north bay and portions through the inland east bay as well. the near surface smoke notice the time stamp, 11:30, the pockets of orange and yellow, those are the unhealthy zones, right. even the hazy conditions in through blue and green, and then look what happens early saturday morning. so we start to see the blue roll in and what this is from is from the wind. so that's going to start to push in further the smoke in to the inland areas away from our region here and just a perspective, this is where that dixie fire is and look at this. look at how far this smoke is traveling. what's going to happen, as the onshore winds push in the smoke it will travel through salt lake city, see up through here las

vegas might get the impact of some of that smoke as well. it will push out of our region but going to begin to impact some other areas as well. as far as the air quality north bay to the east bay remains unhealthy. coast, bay and east bay moderate at times. use your eyes and nose. if you see the smoke if it looks hazy close the windows, smell the lingering smoke as well take your time and head indoors. san jose, livermore, concord, morgan hill are going to be in the low to mid 80s. oakland 70s and san francisco in through the upper 60s for this afternoon. near seasonable. what's going to happen the rest of the week. well, as we get the system that passes to our north, we get that sea breeze coming in, it's going to help cool us off by a couple degrees into saturday and sunday and again, hopefully those winds push out majority of that smoke, but as we head in towards next week we're going to see high pressure begin to rebuild heading into tuesday and wednesday and that's going to bump us right back up into the upper 90s in some spots.
