i saw that the air quality advisory got upgraded to a spare the air alert the smoke mixing closer to the surface level which impacts us, versus -- look at that -- higher in the atmosphere. no smoke in the studio. that was a moment i think. we have san francisco, half moon bay, scotts valley, los gatos, the orange glow and look what happens into saturday. we get a bit of a sea breeze that sort of pushes this east giving us relief from all of this smoke that's been blanketing the bay area. even then there could be times when we see the pockets of smoke through the afternoon just to give you an idea. we have the dixie fire, that's not the only one. we have a number of them burning up to our north and you can see just how that begins to trek east into the weekend. now as far as our temperatures go, we're in the 60s right now for most of the bay area, eventually climbing into the upper 70s, a couple of 80s and 90s even into the interior

valleys. full forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you. to track that air quality in your neighborhood go to nbcbayarea.com. you can click on the link in the trending bar at the top, enter your address on the map to check conditions where you live. >> we've been talking about this today, san francisco is entering a new phase in the pandemic, this morning the proof of vaccination required to enter some indoor businesses and large indoor events. >> cierra johnson joins us live to break down where you need to show that proof and how to do it. sierra. >> good morning. mayor london breed made the announcement last week. you need to be fully vaccinated and show the proof of vaccination and some other major cities you need to at least show you have that first vaccine but here things a little different and you need to show that you are, in fact, fully vaccinated for some specific types of establishments. take a look at your screen. this is a list of where you need to show that proof of insurance.

it's required at businesses in certain what the city considers high contact indoor sectors that serve food or drink like restaurants and bars, clubs, theaters, entertainment venues, indoor gyms and dance studios as well as large events at indoor venues. if you're heading out to any of those type of establishments it's important that you have the qr code that actual card or a picture of the card. for some of the business owners there's a sense of relief proof of vaccination is now a city mandate not just up to the individual business owners. for some other guests this mandate feels like an overreach. >> hopefully this will create more reason to get vaccinated. >> makes me feel safer and other people feel safer and we have to do what we can. >> we shouldn't do mandates because now small businesses who were already having trouble getting people in, and now you want to put another layer.

>> reporter: the city says the proof of vaccination requirement for staff at those same impacted establishments goes into effect october 13th. that's for employees. so the new rule does not include individuals ordering drinks or food to go. this is applicable to those eligible getting the vaccination 12 and up population. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you, cierra. new fallout over the refusal by some san francisco workers to disclose their vaccination status. "the chronicle" is reporting 20 police, sheriff and fire department workers are receiving a letter threatening with suspension that's for failing to report their vaccination status by the august 12th deadline. the city is recommending ten-day unpaid suspension. notifications and other city departments are still in the works. in what's believed to be a first for california one school district has now issued its own

vaccine mandate. schools in culver city will require all eligible students to receive the covid vaccine. remember that is students 12 and older. the district is issuing a deadline to provide vaccine status. teachers and staff are required to show proof of vaccination or do weekly testing. the push for the new covid booster shot is coming with a dose of controversy. anyone who has had either the moderna or pfizer vaccine will be eligible for a booster eight months after their second dose. the program starts september 20th. but the world health organization strongly opposes a third dose for all adults. it's concerned about the supply of medicine for under developed nations an the possibility of booster could lead to new, stronger variants. >> handing extra life jackets to people who already have life jackets while leaving other people to drown without a single life jacket. >> i do not accept the idea we have to choose between america and the world. we clearly see our

responsibility to both. >> this week president biden announced new initiatives in the fight against the virus requiring all nursing home employees to get vaccinated challenging the governors blocking mask mandates in schools. to the crisis in afghanistan, there are reports of afghans having trouble getting to the airport in kabul and now new video shows taliban gunman firing into air -- into the air outside the high wall surrounding the airport in kabul to disperse the crowd and the video could be disturbing to some viewers. >> the u.s. and british military are inside the airport maintaining security and making sure that flights can take off safely. outside the gate the taliban maintain be an armed presence. president joe biden is expected to speak at 10:00 a.m. our time and we will bring that to you in a special report. u.s. officials said up to 15,000 americans remain in afghanistan

after the taliban took control of the country. hundreds of refugees are expected to come here to the bay area and accredited agencies need howing, household items and cash donations to help them. to see how you can donate head to nbcbayarea.com and click on this story on the home page. the united states aid has landed in haiti following a major earthquake there. u.s. coast guard flew 20 injured people from a haitian village to port-au-prince. the quake killed more than 2,000 people injuring 12,000 others. more than 300 people are still missing. hurricane grace has now downgraded to a tropical storm set to make a second landfall soon in the gulf of mexico. the eye crossed yesterday just south on the yucatan peninsula. it's supposed to cross again tonight or tomorrow morning on the coast of vera cruz. the east coast on alert with a hurricane watch for tropical storm henri. henri may hit the northeast

expected to be a category 1 storm by the end of the weekend. >> that's interesting the same country being hit twice because it is a peninsula. that's a rough go. >> as of this morning early they still had winds of 70 plus miles per hour so that just gives you a perspective that we're not in the clear yet, but according to the national hurricane center they did expect for this as it continues to make landfall into the main land dissipate over the next 72 hours expecting to see those winds start to sort of diminish within the next couple hours. look at right now, i mean just in the atlantic basin, winds 85 miles per hour, traveling west at 15 miles per hour. again, still expecting to see some of the heavy rain bands out of this and the strong gusty conditions as they continues to push through and make landfall through the weekend. as far as bringing it closer to home, we're going to continue to deal with that lingering smoke this afternoon. the current temperatures are in the 60s but we're going to climb

into the 80s for the south bay interior valleys mid 80s. notice it's a little bit cooler just slight and as we're going to head into saturday it's going to cool off by a few degrees as well inland. oakland 70, palo alto 76, san francisco 67, i'll talk about when we could get a little bit of a better air quality chance coming up in a few minutes. let's check in with mike. >> we're looking for the better air quality, but also we're concerned about those folks with the fires over here. we're also looking at a known thing going on golden gate bridge sitting here for a little while. it will move the center divide. look at that, under the truck you see how that zipper moves the center divide. that's what goes on early morning before your commute gets into full effect and very easy drive right now to and from the north bay over on the east bay an easy slow of traffic as well. benicia as bell. an incident on the shoulder near moffat. no major problems. the south bay another issue that popped up around 101 at 268.

few minutes. >> again help from caltrans, flashing lights mid screen, the zipper truck making way for more folks in your commute direction coming into the city right now. no problems there. a smooth drive over the high rise in both directions for the san mateo bridge. >> good morning. very happy friday to you. the federal government has refiled its antitrust lawsuit against facebook, a lawsuit a judge originally threw out because he said it was too vague. the ftc had until yesterday to refile and they beat the deadline by a few hours. a company called castle which makes the door locks and card readers that lets people in and out of offices says its data shows people are still not going back to work in san francisco. just 19% of workers are back at the office in the city. the lowest rate in big cities across the united states. a memo sent to apple workers says the company does not expect them back now until 2022. originally they were supposed to come back next month and then

that got extended to october and now they're just forgetting about getting it done in 2021. when apple does go back to the office, it will be three days in, two days at home for most workers. jeff bezos and his company blue origin has successfully slowed the progress for nasa's back to the moon project. blue origin sued after nasa awarded a moon lander contract to spacex. spacex is way ahead of blue origin in space travel, but blue origin says it wants its lander considered too. you're seeing a mockup. that's not a real spaceship behind bezos. >> yeah. that's not a real robot either. you probably figured that out. somebody dressed as robot. it will do basic tasks like build cars on an assembly line. >> we think we will have a prototype some time next year

it is boosting capacity to prepandemic levels but there are hiccups because some operations are still unavailable that includes dining. some areas are not fully staffed or open and transportation is another issue. disney does plan to have its parks fully staffed by the end of the year but they're facing a staffing shortage like all other businesses. new this morning, a fried rice that went viral because of its price now being served up again at even higher prices. >> this time it's for a good cause. did you catch the story a couple weeks ago. san francisco vietnamese restaurant lily was offering a crab fried rice for $72. some of it was a little bit of a [ inaudible ] but there were patients who ordered it. produced by ingredients including caviar. the chef is offering it again at $500 a plate. all the proceeds are going to charity. good for you if you have $500 to

well as portions of palo alto and that air quality right now is moderate in some spots, but we get those pockets of unhealthy air and hopefully with the arrival of this sort of onshore sea breeze, it helps, you know, stop some of the smoke from mixing down to lower surface levels. let's talk about the surface smoke. here we go. you can see this is friday around noon around your lunch hour. by saturday morning we get a little bit more blue and blue on this picture is a good thing. you might still be a little bit hazy but we'll notice the smoke pushing east out of the region which will give us better conditions when it comes to saturday afternoon. hopefully getting better by sunday but the situation as always is constantly changing. that's why you want to tune in with us. 70 in oakland, san jose in those 80s, concord 84, livermore 85 and for the rest of the week, we're going to get a little bit of that cooling that's going to remain in through tomorrow and sunday and then we have high pressure building over the desert southwest heading into

monday and tuesday and what that's going to do is bump us up when it comes to the temperatures. tomorrow a little bit of that breeze going. you might be able to finally wash your car on sunday. i haven't been washing mine because we've got that hazy conditions there's like all the particulate matter that sticks to your windshield, right, or my excuse for not washing my car. >> the hazy conditions, mine because of my lazy conditions. we're looking towards the south bay, a couple new incidents, 87 and 85 moves to the shoulder but popped up. the early start coming out of south kind fine right now. this other issue a car off the roadway near moffat. another major drop into a ditch. no injuries but three people that need a ride and a tow truck can only take two so they are standing around. note folks will be standing around near that moffat off ramp. the bay moves smoothly, no problems for the dublin interchange, slowing out of the altamont. back to you. >> thanks, mike.

welcome back. organizers in minneapolis face a deadline today to finalize the language on a ballot measure that may shape the future of the police department there. this november voters will weigh a possible overhaul to the department that would include changing the city's charter and creating a department of public safety. the police department has experienced multiple setbacks. the largest of course being the death of george floyd. the judge recently ordered a ballot question to be rewritten. our response team just hit another one out of the park hoping to increase our slugging stats to an astounding $50 million. >> consumer investigator chris chmura has the money-save play by play. >> good morning. raconcern in fremont was striking out with his airline and travel agent due a $1200

right now at 5:30, wildfires raging across the state. more than 1 million acres burning here in california and new word this morning on what sparked the fire north of the bay area that reduced one mobile home park to rubble. >> we have issued a microclimate weather alert. the unhealthy air sticking around the bay this morning, things may change soon. an updated timeline of when the smoky skies may be clearing. this is "today in the bay." it is friday morning. always a good morning. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm laura garcia. we have team coverage for you this morning. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda in the east bay where some places are seeing the effects of all that smoke in the air. >> let's start with vianey arana tracking the unhealthy conditions that are kind of all over the bay area. >> northerly winds over the past

couple days pushing the smoke down. winds from the north will travel right to us and this is a shot from pg&e from a couple days ago. cupertino this is what we've been waking up to. the hazy conditions, look at the temperature trend in the 60s and the 70s by 11:00 a.m. as far as the air quality goes it's going to depend on where you are because of the change in the wind. we, of course, have the fog that's going to play a sort of role with the marine layer and the sensors picking up yellow which is moderate but there could be moments where we get pockets of unhealthy air. the onshore flow is going to help stop some of the smoke from mixing down to surface level and it's going to help push some of this out hopefully further east away from the area by saturday. full forecast in a few minutes. >> sounds good. we'll check back with you. bay area schools are closely watching the air quality this morning as, you know, that smoke really continues to hold steady over the east bay and there's another spare the air alert in

effect. >> sharon katsuda live in walnut creek, one place feeling the impact of that smoke. tough with the kids headed back outside and inside. >> that's right. good morning. i'm keeping the windows shut at home and i know schools are dealing with the same thing too. schools want to circulate fresh air especially now that kids are back in school, but it's tough to do that when there's smoke and bad air quality. after the fires in 2018 the state put out air safety guidelines. when the air quality index hits level 4 meaning the aqi is between 150 and 200 all activity should be moved indoors as much as reasonably possible. the pandemic protocols advise schools to circulate air as much as possible and maximize outdoor activity. so far schools have adapted this week and will have to adjust again today. >> i had a lot of kids messaging me, it's smoky outside and what are we going to do. we're going to listen to the

district. >> we have upgraded the air filtration system to across the district so we're comfortable having the windows closed even with covid. >> reporter: and at unhealthy air quality levels you're advised to wear an n-95 mask. now right now air quality here is moderate but, of course, that is expected to change later today. reporting live in walnut creek, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> thanks for following it for us. 5:33. also developing this morning a new milestone in the dixie wildfire we've been telling you about burning in plumas and lassen counties. the flames have burned nearly 700,000 acres. firefighters are making some progress on containment compared to this time yesterday. it's now at 35% containment. more than 1200 homes and buildings have been destroyed. a federal judge has ordered the pg&e worker who found damaged power equipment near the start of the fire to appear in court next month for questioning. take a moment and stop and

look at this. more than a dozen fires that are burning across california. most of them centered here in northern california. east of sacramento as well, firefighters still working to get any kind of containment they can on the caldor fire burning in al dorado county. it's burned nearly 70,000 acres since it started six days ago. at least 100 homes and buildings have been destroyed and thousands of others remain threatened. as for the fire burning closest to the bay area, we have now learned the cause. this is this week's cache fire in lake county. the flames there tore through one neighborhood near clearlake wednesday destroying more than three dozen mobile homes and burning about 75 acres. it was not big, but it was catastrophic. the fire chief now says it started as an oven fire. evacuation orders remain in place. the fire is 40% contained. stay with us for the latest on those fires and all of the smoke they're generating to track the air quality in your

neighborhood, go to nbcbayarea.com. just click on the link in the trending bar at the top enter your address on the map to find the conditions where you live. a live look at san francisco this morning where if you are headed out you're not going to just need a mask for the smoke you have to bring your proof of vaccination. a new vaccine mandate begins today. either you need your card, a photo of your card that qr code that you get from the state, if you want to go into a restaurant, bar or gym. some people actually say they feel safer inside knowing everyone around them is vaccinated. others criticizing the mandate saying it will be harder on struggling restaurants. health leaders hope the new rule will help keep the work force and customers healthy. our cierra johnson will be reporting live from san francisco in less than half an hour and we'll check in with her. marin county is holding a covid vaccine clinic tomorrow. third doses will be offered to anyone who is immunocompromised. this is happening at the marin exhibit hall in san raphael.

appointments are encouraged. cal osha standards board is reportedly debating changing covid regulations in the work place. according to "the chronicle" the changes could happen in december at the earliest. this week they're meeting to talk about possible revision. currently statewide rules allow fully vaccinated people to not wear masks inside the work place. not so for the unvaccinated. workers who say they are vaccinated do not have to show proof and there's no distancing or capacity restrictions in place. cal osha rules are separate than those required by state or local health departments. the red hot housing market in the bay area perhaps losing some of its sizzle for home buyers hoping to make it in the bay. at least that's what new numbers show for last month from the association of realtors. take a look president the bay area median home price is $1.3 million, which is slightly down from june. a little bit more than 3%. year over year the median is up

24%. also cooling is the number of sales which were down slightly compared to the same time one year ago. in an effort to boost air travel during the pandemic american airlines is bringing back its nonstop flights from san jose to chicago and offer four flights a week from mineta airport to o'hare international, from tuesday through friday. the flights will leave san jose ability 1:00 in the afternoon and they're just 4 1/2 hours. passengers must follow covid protocols on the plane. so there you go. you can get your deep dish. >> as you like the deep dish pizza. i don't know about leaving the bay area just yet. hoping it clears. >> if you head up north you want to be careful. i have a closer look at the forecast up north, the beach, further south. let's get right to the weekend weather and talk about it. south lake tahoe this is one of those spots that's going to be tricky and it's going to be nice when it comes to temperatures but dealing with the smoke and it is right near some of the spots of the unhealthy air quality. check the air quality forecast

from the bay area or quality management district website. they do it up to date before you head out there saturday and sunday. the reason i say before is because again, this could change in terms of the smoke depending on how, you know, how many fires are in the containment, the direction of the winds, nice onshore flow. yosemite national park is warmer this weekend. saturday, sunday and monday in those upper 80s. we get plenty of sunshine but again, that air quality is going to be of concern for areas to our north including sonoma. i mean friday, saturday, friday, today we're going to see some of the smoke hopefully helping clear out smoke by saturday night, sunday is probably your best day in terms of the air quality, but if you really want to get away from the smoke, head to the coastline. we're going to see the sort of effects of this onshore breeze a little bit sooner around the coast. santa cruz for friday, saturday, sunday. we're used to the metering lights in, you know, the coastline. for today and tomorrow, we get a

mix of clouds. further down south, l.a., my hometown where my family is, it's going to be comfortable for, you know, the most part, but again, mix of the metering light -- marine layer, but it's going to be a beautiful weekend to get away depending on where you go. a check of traffic with mike. >> that's right. l.a. has its own microclimates and also has its own commute. we're not dealing with that. we have enough around the bay area to deal with it right now. it's just great. look at these green sensors around the bay. good stuff coming into the north bay. although highway 37 just in the last five minutes we've started to see a little bit of slowing around mare island. friday has a lighter later commute. we'll track that and see if it develops. this has been overnight going on northbound 680. the change over here, eastbound highway 4 your alternate to avoid north 242. a little slowing there. we typically see a build for the volume, a slight build as they're ready to clear the crews

good morning. it is 5:43. great friday ahead when it comes to the weather but the smoky conditions are making it tough to spend a lot of time outside. we'll talk about that and what to expect this weekend coming up. >> while there's slowing from 101 to san jose which we expect we expect this view from palo alto. a nice easy drive. we'll check on crews heading towards san mateo county and no problems reported but the volume is about doubled on the southbound side. the push to woo voters in the recall election continues.

after the situation in kabul devolved over the weekend. this time last week the afghan government was in charge. that is no longer true. this video taken on a cell phone near the hamid karzai airport. the gunfire is from the taliban shooting in the air. an ngo says the tear gas near the wall is from american troops pushing the crowd back. so you have frightened people caught between two forces. as americans race to evacuate people before the president's deadline to remove all troops. >> there's been no decision to change the deadline and we are focused on doing everything we can inside that deadline to move as many people out as possible and if and when there's a decision to change that, then obviously that would require additional conversations with

the taliban. >> now remember, it is not just americans who helped america and those who helped america who need out. the war in afghanistan was a nato effort. at one point the dutch fought, the germans fought, the turks fought. the turks make up much of the remaining forces alongside the british. video of the royal marines providing security outside the airport in kabul. they, too, need to get their citizens out and they had translators and other help from afghans. america's decision to pull out unilaterally has left some of these countries feeling slighted. the british press says uk prime minister boris johnson called the white house looking for answers. his phone call was not returned for a day and a half. we have not been able to independently verify that. former prime minister theresa may delivering a blistering speech in the house of commons earlier this week. >> the withdraw when it came was due to be orderly planned and on the basis of conditions. it has been none of these. >> may has been named as one of

thinking when i check that, you know, sensor it shows green and yellow. why is there a spare the air alert. depending on how the wind reacts we could create pockets of unhealthy air at times. near surface smoke you can see by tomorrow saturday 5:30, that onshore wind is going to begin to push smoke east. good news for us, bad news for those who reside further east right. areas in vegas you can see the smoke traveling through salt lake city and the boise area. they're going to feel the impacts of the fires happening here in northern california. today's forecast what can we expect when it comes to the temperatures? it's going to be seasonable overall. 70s in oakland, 80 san jose, 84 warmer through concord, san francisco 67 and that smoke will linger for today but then as we head towards the weekend a couple changes to look out for. a little bit of cooling just a tad bit into the mid 80s still for the inland areas, no upper 90s which we did see earlier this week. we've got that fog that's going

good morning. i'm tom costello at a training center in chicago, behind me flight attendants are trained in self-defense as the instances of people behaving badly even getting physical on board planes as those instances continue to sky rocket. almost 3900 reports so far just this year. flight attendants have signed up for training themselves. they volunteered on their own time to learn how to defend themselves against a potential attacker, defend other

passengers and defend the plane. coming up on the "today" show inside to show you the techniques and what the air marshals are teaching these flight attendants about basic self-defense in the new age of flying. >> tom costello there. police in san diego on the hunt for a person who shot a doordash driver in the face. officers say it all happened while the driver was behind the wheel. the victim crashed into a pole but is expected to survive. no word on the suspect or what led up to the shooting. closer to home now, san jose police are asking for your help this morning in finding the driver in this deadly hit-and-run crash. they say that the car you see there struck a mother of five in a wheelchair using a crosswalk at monterey highway. this happened just before midnight april 1st. police believe the car is a white mercedes-benz that would have damage on the front and left side. amidst the pandemic when it
