we turn things now to forecaster vianey arana keeping tabs on all of that for us. >> we'll get a little bit of a relief thanks to a sea breeze and the sea breeze is going to push out some of the smoke moving it further east which is good news for our region but, of course, those folks that are further east will start to notice the impacts as well. air quality right now, now these sensors pick up the current conditions so what happens in san francisco down to the south bay we're seeing moderate air quality but could see pockets of some unhealthy air. especially for the north bay and the east bay. so that smoke is expected to linger today which is why the spare the air alert remains in effect through the afternoon as well into the evening hours. san jose we're talking 80 degrees. morgan hill 82. concord will be a little bit warmer at about 84 degrees. and then by saturday, in addition to that onshore switch, we're going to get a little bit of cooling. i'll talk about your full forecast coming up in just a few minutes. sounds good.

we'll check back with you. san francisco is entering a phase in the pandemic starting today with a sweeping vaccine mandate. >> things are about to get interesting. proof of vaccination is required to enter some indoor businesses as well as all large indoor events. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live this morning breaking down where you have to whip out that proof. >> good morning. that's exactly right. mayor london breed made that announcement about a week ago, it made headlines not only here in the bay area but across the nation. there are some bigger cities where they are in fact requiring you to show proof of that first vaccination but here in san francisco, you just show that you are, in fact, fully vaccinated so that's what's going on here in sonoma. they've been collecting the records of the cards for a little bit of time now so when withes the folks do come to workout they can come in and show they are a member and their record of vaccination is already in the system. we do have a list of other places where you will need to show that proof of vaccination you'll need to show them at any

establishment that serves food or drinks like restaurants, bars and clubs. theaters as well as entertainment venues will require that vaccination and gyms like this one as well as dance studios also included those large events at those indoor venues. heading out to any of those type of establishments, it's important you have the qr code, the actual card or a picture of your card. for some of the business owners there's a sense of relief that that proof of vaccination is now a city mandate not just up to individual business owners. for some guests this mandate feels like an overreach. >> hopefully this will create more reason to get vaccinated. >> makes me feel safer and other people and i just think, again, we have to do what we can. >> we shouldn't do mandates because now small businesses who are already having trouble getting people in now you want to put another layer.

>> reporter: and the city says that proof of vaccination requirement for staff at those same impacted establishments that goes into effect october 13th for employees. this new role does not include the folks picking up to go orders or drinks at restaurants and it is really just focused on those already eligible to be vaccinated so that would be those in the 12 years or older population. kris and laura. >> so if you're not vaccinated, though, it's not like everything is off limits in san francisco under the mandate. >> reporter: correct. there are some places where you do not have to show the proof of vaccination that include a grocery stores, any of the clothing stores, hair salons, nail salons. if you're not vaccinated or you don't have your card at that moment you are still able to go into those facilities, but it's primarily some of those higher contact is what the city is calling them establishments like gyms, the restaurants, those sort of establishments.

>> thank you. another new normal. >> thank you. 6:04. new fallout over the refusal by some san francisco workers to disclose their vaccination status. the chronicle is reporting 20 police, sheriff and fire department workers are receiving a letter threatening them with suspension. that's for failing to report the vaccination status by the august 12th deadline. the city is recommending ten-day unpaid suspension. notifications in other departments are still in the works. >> what is believed to be a first for california one school district is now issuing it's own vaccine mandate. schools in southern california's culver city will require all eligible cities to receive the covid vaccine, as you know anyone 12 and older. the district is issuing a november 19th status. they are required to show proof of vaccination or undergo weekly testing. the booster shot facing a dose of controversy.

the program began september 20th and anyone who has had either the moderna or pfizer vaccine will be eligible eight months after their second dose. you don't have to be immunocompromised. the world health organization strongly opposes a third dose for all adults citing the supplies for under developed nations and the possibility that a booster could lead to stronger variants. >> having to hand those extra life jackets to people have life jackets while leaving other people to drown without a single life jacket. >> i do not accept the idea we have to choose between america and the world. we see our responsibility to both. >> along with the booster shot president biden announced new initiatives including requiring all nursing home employees to get vaccinated and challenging governors now blocking mask mandates in schools. u.s. aid has landed in haiti. the u.s. coast guard flew 20 injured people to

port-au-prince. the quake killed more than 2,000 people, injuring 12,000 others. more than 300 people are still missing. hurricane grace now downgraded to a tropical storm. set to make a second landfall soon in the gulf of mexico. the eye crossed yesterday just south of te human. it is supposed to cross again tonight or tomorrow morning on the coast of vera cruz. in the meantime the east coast is now on alert with a hurricane watch for tropical storm henri. henri may hit the northeast expected to be a category 1 storm by the end of this weekend. >> we say category 1 and that's a good thing that it's a smaller, lower category, but still a whopper. in that area with the winds and the rain as well could bring on some sudden flooding and as of this morning they had winds 80 plus miles per hour expected to dissipate within the next 72 hours according to the national hurricane center once it makes

fall on the mainland. closer to home that smoke is impacting us here yet again and we are expecting those hazy conditions. so let's take a look at your microclimate highs for the afternoon. how are we shaping up. san francisco 67 degrees. half moon bay 65. in through oakland 70 degrees and then, of course, through the interior valleys to the south bay we're still going to remain in the 80s. now if you're wondering when are we going to get a little bit of a break from the smoke, look what happens. heading into saturday we see some of that smoke begin to push east thanks to a nice onshore flow that's going to clear out the poor air quality. let's see how the roads are doing with mike. >> we expect a later commute. we did have a problem here there was clustering around here, towards treasure island. a disabled vehicle was reported. in the last few minutes i've seen the lights spread out here, easier drive. the sensors have cleared. the first may have cleared. may be a fender-bender closer to the toll plaza. i'll check and look at the.

good morning. 6:12, about to be 6:13. under a microclimate weather alert. smoky skies, spare the air alert is in place. our temperatures will be shaking out into the mid 70s for the bay, upper 80s for the interior valleys and low 80s for the south bay. a closer look at your air quality conditions coming up. i took this camera i was looking for an incident reported in the north bay side. traffic is moving smoothly with the taillights, but we did find the haze you're talking about. a new incident for the bay bridge. happy friday to you. the federal government has refiled its antitrust lawsuit against facebook. the lawsuit a judge originally threw out because he said it was too vague. the ftc had until yesterday to refile and they beat the deadline by a few hours.

castle which makes the door locks and card readers that let people in and out of offices says it's data show people are not going back to work in san francisco. 19% of workers are back at the office, the lowest rate in big cities across the united states. the cdc says 1846 americans died of covid yesterday. those are numbers similar to the middle of the pandemic. a memo sent to apple workers says the company now does not expect them back until 2022. originally they were supposed to come back next month and then that got extended to october and now they're just forgetting about getting it done in '21. when apple does go back to the office it will be three days in two days at home for most workers. jeff bezos and his company blue origin has been successful in their attempts to slow down nasa's back to the moon project. blue origin sued after nasa awarded a moon lander contract to spacex. spacex is ahead of blue origin

bag in the trash can. >> i see your hacks there. >> you know. i'm trying my best and hope you're trying your best to stay inside with the smoke. but head out tomorrow. it's going to be nicer. your microclimate forecast because we are under a microclimate weather alert. wondering why because of this unhealthy air quality. look at this fremont camera this is a live look as the sun begins to come up. we're going to start to see more of the haze. that is not san francisco it is, but it's not. the camera -- it's coming to light. where did it go. kind of see it there. the camera doesn't normally look like that. walnut creek, hazy conditions where we're getting that red/orange glow on there. how long is the smoke going to linger and what can we expect? let's get to your temperatures first and i'll go into more detail on that. as you head out the door temperatures in the 50s, really across the region there. no major changes. the air quality is going to depend on where you live, right. if you live around the coastline, that marine layer has

been helping with the onshore wind starting to move in and going to push a lot of smoke further into the interior valleys. looking at 1:00, this is why we're still under that spare the air alert. we get a lot of mixing through the afternoon of this orange and yellow glow. you can see the index right here creating unhealthy quality in terms of the smoke and the air. all right. saturday, 5:00 a.m., look at what happens. we start to notice a lot of orange drifting further east out of the region because of that onshore flow. so today's microclimate highs for the afternoon will be seasonable. 70s in palo alto, santa cruz will be in the 60s, through the south bay, the low 80s. concord 84 and then the changes up ahead just a couple of temperature differences for the interior valleys, the onshore breeze, though, that's going to be the most noticeable heading into tomorrow. then we get building high pressure from the desert southwest. here's a closer look at your seven-day forecast forecast for san francisco and also inland

areas cool down and heat back up. mike, how are the roads doing? >> the roads are doing all right. traditional friday. lighter volume of traffic. you have the issue the backup at the bay bridge starting to form. just past the metering lights, there is a crash. no injuries reported, should be able to clear that quickly. the bridge crews right here at the bridge stationed over at the parking lot. there's the backup that is forming in the last few minutes. minor slowing, no incline a smooth drive, highway 37 close to the speed limit off mare island. highway 4 no real delays through concord yet. south bay, no major problems. that's a great flow of traffic. no problems across the san mateo bridge. 7:00 we're seeing a lot of our bridges with our tolls peeking about 7:00 daily. back to you. >> thanks for keeping an eye on it. 6:21. coming up next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. i'm chris chmura. nbc bay area responds.

right now at 6:30, wildfires continue to rage across the state. more than a million acres are burning here in california and we have new word this morning on what sparked the fire north of the bay area that reduced one mobile home park to rubble. willing to pay the price for the weather, not the smog. >> yeah. it is tough out there. live look at the sunrise over foster city on the peninsula. you can see it, the haze sticking around this morning, can't see the sunrise. we have hope on the horizon as things may be changing soon and updated timeline on when some of the smoky skies over the bay area may clear. this is "today in the bay." >> at least that gentleman was still smiling even though complaining about the smog and it is a smoggy start. still good to have you with us. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm laura garcia. our team coverage is picking up

as the bay area continues to deal with the lingering unhealthy air quality conditions. sharon katsuda joins us live in the east bay. >> vianey arana is tracking unhealthy conditions and we're under microclimate weather alert. >> the reason for that, the spare the air alert. we want to make sure that folks are aware and know of the smoke if they're not seeing it. depending on where you live it's apparent as you head outside. let's talk about this smoke model so you can see here we have orange, a lot of it, a lot of yellow and this is around our current hour, but i'm going to fast forward this timeline so even through the afternoon, look at the north bay, major the north bay in through the east bay, the tri-valley area seeing some of the worst air quality in comparison to areas along the coast. we're going to get onshore flow. look at what happens into saturday. pushes some of the smoke east, full forecast in just a few minutes. >> thank you. so a live look across the bay area shows all of that haze that we're talking about.

bay area schools really watching that air quality closely this morning as smoke continues to hold steady over parts of the east bay. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live in contra costa county where the smoke is having an impact and we know from past experience when the air is bad, kids go inside but now with covid a lot of folks wondering what's going to happen next. >> reporter: you're right. a lot of people are staying indoors and want to shut their windows at home. take a look why. you can see the smoke is still lingering usually you see blue skies on a beautiful summer day but right now it's all gray. the schools are dealing with this challenge too. schools want to circulate fresh air especially now that kids are back in school, but it's tough to do that when there's smoke and bad air quality. after the fires in 2018, the state put out air safety guidelines. when the air quality index hits level 4, meaning the aqi is roughly between 150 and 200, all activities should be moved

indoors as much as reasonably possible. the pandemic protocols, advise schools to circulate air as much as possible and maximize outdoor activity. fortunately so far, schools have adapted and will have to adjust again today. >> i had a lot of kids messaging me, it's smoky outside and what are we going to do and listen to the district. >> from a covid stand point we've upgraded the infiltration system across the district so we're comfortable having the windows closed even with covid. >> reporter: at unhealthy air quality levels, you're also advised to wear an n-95 mask. right now, air quality here in walnut creek is moderate but, of course, as the day goes on, we expect that to worsen. reporting live in walnut creek, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> so we also have questions about whether or not kids are going to be wearing those masks. we know those regular surge klg

masks will not work, you might want to think about n-95s as you head outside. thank you, sharon. developing a new milestone in the dixie wildfire burning in plumas and lassen counties. the flames have burned 700,000 acres but firefighters are making some progress on containment compared to this time yesterday. it's now at 35% containment. more than 1200 homes and buildings have been destroyed. a federal judge has ordered the pg&e worker who found damaged power equipment near the start of the fire to appear in court next month for questioning. if you can for a moment take a look at this, more than a dozen fires are burning across northern california. you see most right here in the bay area why we're getting all the bad air. east of sacramento as well, firefighters still working to get any kind of containment on the caldor fire burning in el dorado county burning nearly 70,000 acres since it started six days ago. at least 100 homes and buildings have been destroyed.

thousands of others remain threatened. for the fire burning closest to the bay area, we now have learned the cause. this is the cache fire burning in lake county. flames tore through a neighborhood near clearlake on wednesday destroying more than three dozen mobile homes burning 75 acres. the fire chief now tells us it started as an oven fire. some evacuation orders are in place but the fire is 40% contained. stay with us for the latest on the fires and all of that smoke you can track the air quality in your neighborhood by going to nbcbayarea.com click on the link in the trending bar, enter your address on the map and see the conditions where you live. marin county is holding a special covid vaccine clinic tomorrow, third doses offered to anyone who is immunocompromised happening at the marin exhibit hall in san raphael and appointments are encouraged. cal osha standards board is debating changing covid

regulations in the work place. the changes would happen in december at the earliest. this week they're meeting to talk about possible revisions. statewide rules allow fully vaccinated people to not wear masks at the work place. not so for unvaccinated. workers say they are vaccinated do not have to show proof. also there's no distancing or capacity restrictions in place. cal osha rules are separate than those required by state or local health departments. the red hot housing market perhaps losing some of its sizzle for home buyers hoping to make it in the bay at least that's what new numbers show from last month from the association of realtors. the median home price is now at $1.3 million. dropped slightly from june. down a little more than 3%. but still, year over year the median is up 24%. also cooling down they're finding the number of sales which were down slightly compared to the same time a year ago. in an effort to boost air travel during the pandemic, american airlines is bringing

northbound side. we'll talk about what you may see and what the problem might be coming up. thanks so much. it's 6:42. a follow-up, man is in custody in connection with a bomb threat that caused tense moments yesterday near the u.s. capitol. authorities say the man claimed to have a bomb in a pickup truck that led to a standoff near the library of congress. authorities cleared the area when officers saw what appeared to be a detonator. he surrendered about five hours later and was said to be live streaming the entire thing on social media. trying to woo voters in the recall push, three candidates seeking to replace governor gavin newsom took to the debate stage last night. assemblyman kevin kiley, businessman john cox and former mayor kevin faulconer were the only three out of more than 20 republican candidates that showed up. now all their shots were aimed directly at newsom's handling of the pandemic. >> it would be hard to imagine a

president biden will speak once again about afghanistan later this morning. >> scott mcgrew, there's talk of a timeline to remove troops and it's slipping. >> it's possible. that would have serious implications for our relationship with the taliban and we do have a relationship. the trump administration negotiated with the taliban for years. our generals are talking to them now. the white house says president biden will speak about afghanistan today at 10:00 a.m. our time. we will carry that live as it happens. you'll recall he spoke monday after the situation in kabul devolved over the weekend. just think of it, this time last week, the afghan government was in charge in kabul. that is no longer true. video taken on cell phone near the hamid karzai airport those on the ground say the gunfire from the taliban shooting into the air and ngo on the ground says the tear gas that you can see near that big wall is from

american troops pushing the crowd back. so you have frightened people caught between two forces as americans race to evacuate people before the president's deadline to remove all troops. >> there has been no decision to change the deadline. and we are focused on doing everything we can to move as many out as possible and if and when there's a decision to change that, then obviously that would require additional conversations in the taliban. at one point the dutch fought, the germans fought, the turks fought, make up much of the remaining forces now alongside the british. video of the royal marines providing security outside the airport in kabul need to get citizens out. they had translators and other help from afghans.

america's decision to pull out left some of the countries feeling slighted. there is good news to tell. the pentagon evacuated 3,000 people in 16 flights in the past day. 350 of them were americans. that doesn't include 11 charter flights where we're not sure who was aboard. again, we have allies who are also trying to get people out. it's hard to show you the good news. we don't have cameras on the runways. instead everyone has a camera where things are going wrong. so perhaps some perspective this morning as america tries to untangle what has been a giant but preventable mess. you may have seen this picture the people crammed into a cargo jet. at the time the u.s. air force said 640 people were on the flight based on the seats the busses that brought them to the airport. this morning the air force has updated that number to 823 because nobody counted the children in. this is the most number of human

vaccination is required to enter some indoor businesses as well as all large indoor events. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live in san francisco to break down where you need to show that proof. good morning, cierra. >> good morning. we were entering another phase of this pandemic starting today as you mentioned, you will have to show that proof of vaccination. when mayor london breed made the announcement she turned some heads and only here in the bay area and across the nation. there's a few metropolitan cities you have to show that you have at least one portion of that vaccination, but here in san francisco, you will have to show that you're fully vaccinated in one of those locations will be the gym here in sonoma. they've started collecting proof of vaccinations so when folks come in they don't have to continuously show it. we have a list of other locations you have to show that proof of vaccination. that does include places where they serve food or drink that includes restaurants, bars,

clubs, theaters and event venues, proof there. as i mentioned indoor gyms, dance studios and large events at some of those indoor venues. if you're heading out today, any type of establishment that falls into that category, it's important you have that qr code, the actual card or the picture of your card for some of the business owners we spoke with there's a sense of relief that proof of vaccination is now a city mandate and not just up to those individual business owners. for some guests this mandate feels like an overreach. >> hopefully this will create nor reason to get vaccinated. >> makes me feel safer, makes other people feel safer and i think again, we got to do what we can to cut down the spread. >> we shouldn't do mandate because now small businesses who are already having trouble getting people in, now you want to put another layer. >> reporter: the city says the proof of vaccination requirement

limit your outdoor activities, go on like a one mile run. fremont we have the hazy conditions. you want to listen to the experts when they say the smoke can impact your health, they mean it. you know, if you can smell the smoke, see the smoke there's going to be your two best indicators of how the conditions are in your area aside from, you know, these sensors we have here. let's talk about the air quality right now. you can see we've got for the most part yellow sensors which indicates moderate air quality. you may be thinking i'm not smelling any smoke in my area. that's because it depends on the direction of the wind and where you live and what we're going to be seeing in the flow. let's talk about that. so we had those light northerly winds push a lot of the smoke down the past couple days which is what brought on those hazy conditions the past couple days. take a look at this, by 1:30, we start to see more of that mixing near our area. however, saturday morning into saturday afternoon, we get a nice onshore breeze that's going

to bring a sea breeze pushing the smoke further east out of our region but our temperatures are going to remain pretty seasonable in the 70s and in the 80s today. so keep that in mind. over the next couple days the rest of the weekend we've got cooling heading into saturday and then by next week, enjoy these sort of slightly cooler temperatures because we are -- i did not mean to do that graphic but we are under an exceptional drought. 49% of the state of california this week, another factor that plays into this poor air quality. let's get a check of the roads with mike. >> yeah. you have a lot of red on the drought monitor. orange over here i'm telling you about, north 101 as you're past closer to san antonio. a car took out a light pole on the shoulder, activity, distraction, it slows where folks see the rai and the other shops there. no major problems here. a little build for the bay but a nice easy drive and the bay

burning in el dorado county that's burned nearly 70,000 acres since starting just six days ago. at least 100 homes and buildings have been destroyed. and as we look live across the bay area, schools are watching the air quality very closely this morning as smoke continues to hold steady especially over the east bay. >> sharon katsuda joins us live where the smoke certainly has been having an impact on folks there. >> reporter: yeah, laura and kris and the photographer, in the past half hour we're starting to smell and taste the smoke so there's a definite difference within the past hour and you can take a look over here this is why. you can see this smoky sky today schools are definitely dealing with this challenge today too. schools want to circulate fresh air now that kids are back in school, but it's tough to do that when there's bad air quality after the fires in 2018. the state put out air safety guidelines when the air quality
